2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax 1794 Edition Review
In a very competitive environment with the top-selling Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Nissan Titan, and Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra makes headway in catching the competition. Introduced for 2007, the current generation Tundra was revised for 2014, and gets some refreshing for 2018. While it needs a major overhaul, the Tundra still offers plenty of grunt and the luxury many truck buyers are looking for.
This week we drove the top-of-the-line, 2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax 1794 Edition.
What’s New For 2018
The 2018 Tundra gets refreshed styling and Toyota’s Safety Sense driver assist package. The safety technology includes forward collision warning and mitigation, lane departure warning, auto high-beam control, and adaptive cruise control.
Features & Options
The 2018 Toyota Tundra Crewmax 1794 Edition ($50,130) comes loaded with standard features like foglights, variable intermittent windshield wipers, and an upgraded tech interface that includes a 7-inch touchscreen, HD and satellite radio, traffic information, and navigation. The CrewMax adds a power-opening rear window and an overhead console.
Up front it gets bucket seats, leather upholstery, an upgraded power driver’s seat, a power-adjustable passenger seat, a center console (with storage and console shifter), and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Our tester came with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, 20-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, movable tie-down cleats, and dual-zone climate control.
1794 Edition Features
At the top of the heap, the 1794 Edition comes with distinctive styling elements, LED daytime running lights, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, heated and ventilated front seats, driver-seat memory functions, and a 12-speaker JBL sound system.
Our 1794 Edition tester came with the optional TRD Off-Road package adding 18-inch TRD wheels, off-road tires, trail-tuned shock absorbers, skid plates, and tow hooks (included with 1794 Edition). Other features included the power moonroof ($850), TRD performance exhaust ($1,100), and TRD rear sway bar ($299). Total MSRP including destination: $54,892.





Interior Highlights
Tundra’s seats are big and roomy, but we thought they could use a bit more cushioning. Controls are large, logically arranged, and easy to figure out. We could even change the radio station without the owner’s manual. The center console is huge and perfect for working in the field because it can easily hold a laptop. A laptop computer will fit perfectly on the console as well. 
This 1794 Edition came with brown leather seats with cream-colored stitching, and wood trim on the dash, door panels, steering wheel, and gear shifter. It also featured special 1794 floor mats front and back.
The big CrewMax offers seating for five with leg space for taller riders in every seat. The backseats fold up easily with one pull of the handle, opening up to a large cargo area that’s ready to carry those bigger work items. Toyota listened and opted for the folding seats over the tilt and recline feature. Now you can carry tools or other valuable items you’d prefer to have inside and not leave exposed in the open bed.





Engine, Towing, & Fuel Mileage Specs
A 5.7-liter V8 engine developing 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft. of torque is standard on the Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro trims. All Tundras equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 come with a standard tow package and a larger 38-gallon gas tank. It was more than ready to tow up to its rated 10,500 lbs. This tester also came equipped with a 4:30 axle ratio, engine and transmission coolers, and an HD battery and alternator.
EPA fuel economy estimates are 13/17 city/highway and 14 combined with 4WD.
Driving Dynamics
The first thing we noticed after getting behind the wheel was the throaty exhaust note. The optional TRD performance dual exhaust system brings the 5.7-liter V8 to life. We found ourselves jumping hard on the accelerator this week just to hear the sound inside the cabin. The 5.7-liter V8 impresses, thanks its generous torque output and smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission.
We had a snow storm hit the mountains this week and shifted from 2H to 4H with the knob on the Tundra’s dash. The 4W Demand 4WD system instantly shifted into action and we never lost traction as we moved from dry pavement to a snow-covered highway in less than a few miles. On the open road, Tundra gives the driver a feeling of confidence and security in the extreme elements with its size, commanding view of the road, and all-terrain winter tires. We had no problem passing slower traffic that was having more difficulty with the slick roads.
Ride quality is reasonably comfortable, though rough pavement and the dirt roads leading to our house produced impacts beyond the normal range. During our urban driving, the Tundra handled well in heavy city traffic. The rear backup camera came in handy as we parked the long CrewMax in a tight parking space.
Conclusion
The 2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax is a capable full-size pickup, and when equipped with the TRD Off-Road package, can deliver in a big way for those using it for hunting, camping, and boating trips. The 1794 Edition adds an extra level of comfort beyond the ordinary and the new safety tech gives greater security on the road.

Letter From The UK: Winning Over The Electric Car Skeptics
The citizens of Great Britain are, to say the least, a skeptical lot. Tell them white is white and they will question how many shades of gray that includes. Tell them their borders are safe from invasion and watch the barricades appear in the streets like scenes from Les Miserables. Offer them a fair choice and they will ask what the catch is. Not that they’re all like that of course; some of them are true cynics.
Slow & Steady
Thus, when they are told electric vehicles are The New Big Automotive Thing, the best reaction you will get from them is “we’ll see,” possibly with an added snort of derision. In short, the take up of electric cars has been slow for all the reasons we now know, including range anxiety and the lack of fast-charging.
It is a fact, however, that the rate of purchase for electric cars is increasing, albeit slowly. Some of the cars are very good indeed and really quite fun, but unless your driving is confined to a local area or short journeys generally, they just don’t measure up. Under no circumstances will we Brits undertake a long trip and be content to sit in a car park for an hour or more just to get a battery boost.
Sales of EVs are not helped by the charging issue. They simply do not top up quickly enough even if you are lucky to find an unoccupied charger or one not broken down, and there’s a lot of those. This really is a scenario where the cart has been put before the horse and it has had a detrimental effect on sales, no matter how otherwise excellent the cars are.
Powering The Future
So that problem continues to be ongoing. It does appear there is a slow improvement although the vacillations of politicians continually hold the entrepreneurial go-getting spirit back. They want us in electric cars and then fail to aid the process. Where have we heard that before?
Fortunately, the automotive industry persists. 2018 is likely to bring many new automotive innovations to the fore along with some striking new electric and hybrid cars (thankfully, for the old school road warrior, also a couple of V8 road monsters like the new Bentley Bentayga V8. Boom! Get this dust in your batteries Mr. Electric).
At the recent global CES (Consumer Technology Association) conference, some technological advances were presented by car makers. Hyundai is introducing a fuel cell vehicle with autonomous features, for example, and Kia was featuring a new, all-electric concept that demonstrated the brand’s future. There is, however, one new development, years in the planning, that is likely to change the electric car market, and also possibly change the mind of UK car buyers, even cynics like me.

In-Wheel Power
Electric hub motors within the wheels are really here. It’s the coming thing and it seems rightly inevitable this is the way forward for pure electric drive. It is entirely true the concept is not new, but that it is now proven to work is the point. A British-based company (Hurrah! Ain’t dead yet World!) has spent the last eight years designing and developing a unique and very versatile in-wheel electric drive system for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric light-duty vehicles. The system can, they say, improve vehicle fuel economy, add torque, increase power, and improve the handling of both new and, crucially, existing vehicles. This indicates no absolute need to necessarily develop brand new models to fit the technology.

I’ll Let Jennifer Aniston Take Over (Joke for TV addicts)
Here’s the science bit: This fully-integrated, direct-drive solution combines in-wheel motors with an integrated inverter, control electronics, and software – no separate large, heavy, and costly inverter is required. Each motor fits easily in the unused space behind a conventional 18 to 24-inch wheel that can, cleverly, use the original equipment wheel bearing. The system, I have learned, reduces part count, complexity, and cost. There is no need to integrate traditional drivetrain components such as external gearing, transmissions, driveshafts, axles, and differentials.
The developer says each motor can produce 81kW, equivalent to 109 bhp, and thus presumably, a basic two-wheel-drive electric car could conceivably produce peak power of 218 bhp and a huge woosh of torque. Put that in your toy city car millennials!

But Does It really Work?
Yes, is the short answer. It has been tested successfully in a Volkswagen Golf although not without issues it has to be said. With the extra weight in the wheels, the vehicle’s drive dynamics change. To counter this, the suspension of the test car was tuned by an independent vehicle dynamics expert. This was shown to work and the additional unsprung weight was handled successfully. The test car was made to handle as well as a standard model. The effect on tire wear was not mentioned and I do wonder about that.
As with any automotive advance, I have doubts it will be plain sailing, but this does seem, to me, to be a worthwhile new development in the advancement of the electric car. The potential for simplified drivetrains and some real enthusiast levels of performance, with both two and four-wheel drive vehicles, is clear.
Sure, it’s expensive right now, but once rolling as it were, further development and economies of scale will solve that problem. With the much-vaunted advances from Ernst Stavro Blofeld and his henchmen at Tesla, and elsewhere in battery and charging technology, it may well mean the electric car will soon make sense for all drivers. If that’s the case you can count me in.

2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo: Product & Performance Overview

Look, the only reason I pay attention to Porsche Cayennes is because they are the profit centers that allow the Zuffenhausen company to make sports cars. I largely look upon them as necessary evils, so, what . . . am I supposed to get all excited over the new 2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo?
Let’s see here . . . the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 puts out 550 horsepower, 567 lb-ft. of torque; that’s nice. They say it’s quicker and faster than the previous gen, okay, duh! And, um, it’s got a top speed of 177 mph and does 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds? Holy sh-!
Man, that is one fast truck. Yeah, I know, “fast” is kind of what Porsche is famous for, but still, that’s pretty impressive for something that weighs – huh, that’s funny, they don’t mention weight. Probably a couple of tons, at least, which is both understandable and sad, but also impressive that Porsche can make this thing haul that fast.
Performance Tech
The 2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo is the third-generation of the Cayenne range and, in addition to that twin-turbo four-liter V8 engine that dispenses 550 horsepower, there’s a host of other goodies. There’s a 3-chamber air suspension, staggered tire sizes, and this new, high-performance Porsche Surface Coated Brake technology. The ’19 Cayenne Turbo also features rear-axle steering and electric roll stabilization.
The front and rear wheel sizes fall into the “frickin huge” arena with 285/40 at the front and 315/35 out back.

Design Language
Design-wise – both exterior and interior – it’s more a case of refinement and sharpening, than heading in any new directions. The front end shows off the LED main headlights of the Porsche Dynamic Light System, and the new Turbo further sets itself apart from lesser Cayennes with double-row front light modules. The wheel arches have been widened and feature painted trim to house the special 21-inch wheels. The twin tailpipes differentiate the Cayenne Turbo from its six-cylinder brethren.
On the inside, you’ll find interior design elements like center-mounted grab handles (a Cayenne motif), a high-definition 12.3-inch dashboard mounted screen, and an analog tachometer bracketed by two 7-inch HD screens. There’s a standard 710 watt Bose system, which is probably capable of seriously damaging your Organ of Corti. There are also 18-way sport seats, integrated headrests, and standard heating functions for all outboard seats and the steering wheel.
Engine Bay
Now, about that 4.0-liter V8! As I said, it puts out 550 horsepower and 567 lb-ft. of torque, which works out to be an additional 30 ponies and 14 lb-ft. on the previous Cayenne Turbo. Porsche Traction Management is, thankfully, standard, and the all-wheel drive system is hooked to a new, 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. The plant’s turbochargers are nestled inside the V of the cylinders, which sounds like a thermodynamic and maintenance nightmare to me, but I ain’t a German engineer, so what do I know? Yes, this arrangement gets you lots of benefits, like shortened exhaust paths to the turbochargers and improved handling characteristics thanks to a lower center of gravity. But still, that’s an awful lot of heat generators wadded into a small space!

Suspension & Aerodynamics
The new 3-chamber air suspension is combined with the Porsche Active Suspension Management system. The active shock absorbers allow for a wider range of spring rates when compared to the previous setup, so the ride and handling is improved in both the comfort and performance settings. There are six selectable ride heights and the ground clearance can be manually adjusted to suit the off-road terrain.
There are also five new driving programs to fit a variety of conditions, the default being the on-road program; the four other modes are Mud, Gravel, Sand, or Rocks. All of the power delivery stuff, the drive modes, chassis settings, and differential locks can be selected and adjusted accordingly.
And even though the new Cayenne Turbo is relatively box-like, Porsche has seen to aerodynamics with things like the adaptive roof spoiler that actually helps shorten braking distances. The aforementioned Porsche Surface Coated Brake technology helps too. The design has a tungsten carbide layer applied to the otherwise-normal cast-iron discs for better braking performance and wear resistance.
The new 2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo will be up for orders come December, with dealer deliveries happening in the Fall of 2018. Cost? That would be $124,600, which, let’s face it, is really, really expensive.

Infiniti Showcases SUVs & New Engine Tech In Houston Infiniti will showcase their refreshed SUV lineup at the Huston Auto Show in Houston, Texas through the end of the week. Attendees will be able to see, sit in, and receive more information on Infiniti’s entire line of SUVs and crossovers, although it’s likely the 2019 QX50 and 2018 QX80 will be the most popular. Both feature entirely new designs and technologies for their respective model years.
2019 QX50
The 2019 QX50 was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November with the first production-ready variable compression ratio engine. Named the “Infiniti VC-Turbo,” the 2.0-liter engine can adjust its compression ratio for better power and efficiency. The compression ratio is altered through an advanced multi-link system, continuously raising or lowering the reach of the pistons. Infiniti says this technology offers the power of a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, and the torque and efficiency of a four-cylinder diesel.
Infiniti spent about 20 years perfecting variable compression; expect the 2019 QX50 in showrooms later this year.

2018 QX80
Those who require a larger machine can opt for the QX80, Infiniti’s flagship SUV. The vehicle made its global debut during the 2017 Dubai International Motor Show in November. Infiniti says it was built to meet the needs of today’s luxury buyers, and introduces a more modern interpretation of upscale luxury to the full-size SUV segment. Such luxury features include handcrafted interior surfaces, numerous ergonomic improvements, perforated and quilted leather for the armrests, door panels and seats, and the extensive use of soundproofing materials.
The 5.6-liter V8 creates 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft. of torque, and powers either the rear or both axles, the latter being known as “All-Mode 4WD.” Drivers can customize the four-wheel drive system via a dial on the center console. Infiniti says this provides four-wheel traction when conditions require and off-road capability when the driver demands. The 2018 QX50 is available now.

In Person
The 2018 Houston Auto Show runs January 24 through the 28th at the NRG Center, One NRG Park, Houston, Texas. Or right next to the old Astrodome. The Houston Auto Show is the largest of its kind in the southern United States and spans over 800,000 square feet of the NRG Center. Over 30 different automakers are expected in the house, with some offering free test drives just outside the doors of the event.

Turf & Terrain: SUVs & Footballs Have Something In Common The Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots will square off in Super Bowl LII on Sunday, February 4th. At first glance, it may not seem like SUVs and game day balls have much in common, but believe it or not, there is an aerodynamic science to both. In advance of the big game, GMC and Wilson Sporting Goods gave us some insight into how SUVs and footballs are both influenced by aerodynamic design.
In The Tunnel
When it comes to the 2018 GMC Terrain, engineers spend more than 300 hours in the wind tunnel to refine the vehicle’s exterior. The process is extensive and involves balancing aerodynamics, functionality, and the brand’s specific design language. For example, the Terrain’s lifted stance exhibits the automaker’s said design language, but it also means more air will flow under the vehicle. This additional, unwanted air will pressurize the chassis components, increasing aerodynamic drag and lowering efficiency.
GMC’s engineers use testing and simulation to craft features that effectively guide air to the back of the vehicle. In the case of the 2018 GMC Terrain, aerodynamic modifications give the vehicle an EPA-estimated 26 combined mpg for AWD models, an increase of three mpg when compared to the previous generation.
“Reducing the aerodynamic drag of an SUV is always a challenge,” said Alicia Bidwell, GMC Aerodynamic Engineer. “The styling that you can see – and the mechanical components that you can’t – work together in perfect aerodynamic harmony.”

On The Field
In a similar sense, aerodynamics are an essential part of game day footballs. Although the typical football is quite different from the average SUV, the Wilson team uses computational fluid dynamics, similar to how vehicle engineers do, when designing the perfect football.
“Many look at our NFL football and see it as a simple object, however, the amount of engineering, particularly in the area of aerodynamics, that has gone into the ball is pretty extraordinary,” said Daniel Hare, Aerodynamics Research Engineer, Advanced Innovation, Wilson Sporting Goods.
Wilson’s researchers have enhanced the shape of NFL footballs to match today’s more passing-centered game. Aerodynamic properties like velocity, direction of motion, and spin rate are analyzed and studied, meaning when your favorite quarterback let’s it loose on Sunday, the ball flies through the air in a more streamlined fashion. The leather pattern and height of the laces are designed to increase laminar airflow, otherwise known as airflow that is smooth and consistent with as little turbulence as possible.
“Every millimeter of the football has been designed to maximize the airflow around it,” Hare explained. “We can extend its flight, reduce drag, and help maintain stability as much as possible.”

10 Best 1980s Era Collectible Cars

When you think of a classic car, which vehicle pops into your mind? Is it your grandfather’s 1940 Ford? Perhaps a turquoise ’57 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible? How about a ’69 Hemi Road Runner? Or maybe your idea of a classic is the infamous Back to the Future DeLorean? Whatever your answer, it is most likely driven by the generation in which you grew up.
In the old car hobby, it’s an accepted fact the cars of our youth are the ones we desire to collect. At present, Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are riding the collector car wave, snatching up vehicles from the 1950s, ‘60s, and early ‘70s.
In 2017, Boomers are between 53 and 71 years old. With access to funds for discretionary spending, many are buying the cars from their teenage years. The other side of that equation is that Boomers are also reaching the end of their life spans and the next generation (Generation X, born between 1965 and 1976) is entering the hobby. It should be no surprise Gen-Xers, who were teens through the 1980s, are seeking to collect the cars whose posters adorned their bedroom walls. Baby Boomers didn’t think they would live to see the day these so-called “malaise era” cars would be desired by anyone, but history is proving otherwise.
As Generation X matures and gains the means to purchase their four-wheeled dreams, what are they looking for? Here are ten ‘80s era vehicles we’re seeing at classic car auctions and shows.
Alfa Romeo Spider
The movie studio that made The Graduate should charge Alfa Romeo an annual commission. The movie, released in 1967, made such an impression that, to this day, people remember the little red convertible driven by Dustin Hoffman. Part of what makes the Alfa Romeo Spider memorable is how this car, introduced in 1966, kept its basic styling through end of production in 1994. Adding to the car’s appeal is that, by 1981, there were almost no affordable convertibles available in the market. For collectors who want the romance of an Italian convertible, this charming two-seater has lots going for it. We witnessed one sell at auction earlier this year for $15,000.
COLLECTOR’S HINT: Look for a 1982 or later car with Bosch fuel injection for improved drivability.

American Pickup Trucks
Look around you as you drive down the highway: 50 percent or more of the vehicles on the road today are classified as light trucks. While SUVs and minivans fit that definition, it’s the good ol’ pickup that most people still think of when you say “truck.” Their popularity has not been lost on the Big Three, who will happily charge you $50,000 or more for a fully loaded model. If you long for simpler times for your pickup, look into the Chevys, Fords, and Dodges of the ‘80s. While ‘50s and ‘60s era trucks have soared in value, collectors are just starting to pay attention to the newer ones. Watch out for trucks that have lived a hard life; there are some out there which have been pampered. We saw several clean ‘80s Chevrolet pickups sell recently for around $15,000.
COLLECTOR’S HINT: Skip the frills. Collectors want regular cab, short bed, two-wheel drive trucks. Get that and you’ll have an easier time when you’re ready to sell.
Buick Grand National
To the Baby Boomers, the muscle car era started with the ’64 GTO, and ended in the early ‘70s when insurance premiums drove buyers away. But big engine, hot shot cars never go out of style. Buick decided to show the world they still had it with the Grand National. This was no multi-carb V8; instead, a turbo V6 put down the power in a very high-tech 1980s way. For teens in the ‘80s who may have lusted for their dad’s Buick Grand Sport, the Grand National was a perfect, and reasonably-priced substitute. A popular online auction site sold several earlier this year for less than a loaded Honda Civic: around $17,000.
COLLECTOR’S HINT: Find a one-owner car, as you’ll almost be guaranteed it was taken care of.

BMW M3
Bavarian Motor Works (better known as BMW) built THE yuppie-mobiles of the 1980s. Yuppies (Young Urban Professionals) rejected their parent’s Cadillacs, Lincolns, and Imperials, but these German sport-luxury vehicles fulfilled their automotive lust. The BMW 3 Series was a sales success all through the 1980s. Its ultimate configuration, the M3, had it all: higher horsepower, better handling, aero add-ons, and fancier interiors. While the M3 model continues today, the original came out in 1985.
Those who were youngsters at that time may be driving a new Bimmer now, but their collector interest brings them back to the M3s they wanted as teenagers. Prices have jumped, with good late ‘80s M3s selling for $60,000 and it’s predicted prices will continue to climb.

Chevrolet Z28 / Pontiac Trans Am
GM tried to stay in the muscle car game in the 1980s but was fighting a losing battle with more stringent fuel economy and emission standards in effect. Their pony cars, the Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, soldiered on. Their performance submodels, the Z28 and Trans Am, stayed in the marketplace, even if it was stripes and spoilers that set them apart more than underhood grunt. For those who reminisced about the muscle car glory days, these malaise-era cars were poor substitutes. But given how little competition was in the marketplace, sales remained respectable. Today, there is strong nostalgia for both. The Camaro, which returned in 2010, and the Firebird, which died when GM pulled the plug on Pontiac, still have lots of fans for whom any version of a Z28 or Trans Am is a desirable car. Recent auction sales put their prices squarely in the mid-teens.
COLLECTOR’S HINT: Make sure the Z28/Trans Am is not a fake, and that it left the factory as represented.

Datsun / Nissan 280ZX
With today’s success of the Japanese auto manufacturers, it’s difficult to remember a time when “Japanese car” was shorthand for cheap throwaway transportation. Datsun (made by Nissan) changed the game big time with its introduction of the 240Z sports car in 1970. For the first time ever, people lusted for an Asian car. The Z-car continued throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, but got bigger, heavier, and slower. As we’ve seen with some of our other examples, the original cars (in this case, the 1970 to 1973 240Z) have soared in popularity and value. Young adults who bought the revamped 280ZX in the 1980s might want to buy a 240Z, but don’t want to spend the money. The 280ZX they had (or wanted) becomes the default collectible.
Prices have been low, but are starting to climb: a nice one sold recently for $16,500.
COLLECTOR’S HINT: The T-tops were prone to leak; check the floorboards for rust.
DeLorean DMC-12
What can be said about the DeLorean? That one of Detroit’s most successful executives labored tirelessly in an all-out effort to produce a world-class sports car? Or that gross mismanagement, poor business decisions, and drug-infused intrigue doomed the venture? Perhaps both statements are true. But similar to Benjamin Braddock and his Alfa, it’s Marty McFly and Doc Brown who fatefully cast their DeLorean into movie immortality in Back to the Future. Folks who can’t tell a Chevy Corvette from a Chevy Chevette squeal and point when they see a DeLorean.
Values for used ones languished for years; but fans of all things 1980s (the movie was released in 1985) have driven up demand. Recent prices have averaged in the mid-$20s, but one sold this summer for $39,000. You’ll have to travel back in time if you want a cheap one.
COLLECTOR’S HINT: Be sure that everything works and that it’s all there, as spare part availability may be sketchy.

Ferrari 308 GTB/GTS
To Baby Boomers who prefer their vehicles from the land of pasta, pizza, and prosciutto, nothing sings the aria like a Ferrari. The classic Ferraris of the 1950s and 1960s had V-12 engines mounted in front, driving the rear wheels through a car-length driveshaft. When Ferrari switched to (gasp!) mid-mounted V6 and V8 engines, the traditionalists said “no thanks.” For years, the market agreed: values of the 308 GTB (Berlinetta or hardtop) and GTS (Spider or convertible) stayed below $20,000.
Then a funny thing happened: prices for all Ferraris skyrocketed. 60s era Ferraris, which wouldn’t sell at $100,000 were now trading hands for $700,000. The 308 GTS (made famous on the TV show Magnum, P.I.) was still the affordable Ferrari, but prices rose to $75,000 or more. The market has cooled a little bit; several recent sales for nice 308s were around $50,000.
COLLECTOR’S HINT: On any Ferrari, up-to-date maintenance is key. Ask for records to show when the timing belt was last replaced.
Ford Mustang GT
Ford Mustang sales have always been rather steady. Sure, there was that Mustang II from the ‘70s that most Blue Oval fans prefer to forget. The introduction of the Fox Body Mustang in 1979 was a success for Ford, which continued through the end of this generation in 1993. What really rang the bell for enthusiasts was the launch of the 1982 GT and its 5.0 engine. Performance fans had a car they considered a world-class competitor in an affordable, American-made package. The truth is, desire for these V8 1980s Mustangs has never waned. What has changed is that teens who wanted one before getting their licenses are looking for them now in their adult years and driving the demand. Clean ones are out there, but expect to pay a minimum of $10,000.
COLLECTOR’S HINT: Too many were modded and rodded almost beyond recognition. Only buy an unmodified car that has been maintained.

Mercedes-Benz 450/380/560 SL
The Mercedes-Benz SL models (“Sportlich Leight” in German, translated as “Sport Light”) were introduced in 1954 and have been in continuous production since, so there is a long history with these two-seaters. The R107 version was introduced in 1972 and stayed in production through 1989. It was one of the most popular high-end European models of the ‘80s, sold as the 450SL, 380SL and 560SL, depending on the displacement of its V8 engine. They were all convertibles, all had automatic transmissions in the U.S., and came with a folding soft-top, a removable hard-top, or both.
The complexities of the modern SLs have some collectors yearning for the simpler cars, and nice ones are starting to creep up in price. Supply is good because many were bought as 3rd or 4th cars and German craftsmanship has kept many on the road. A 450SL sold at auction this summer for $15,000. Beware of higher mileage cars which may sell for as little as $5,000, but they are no bargain in the long run.
COLLECTOR’S HINT: Both soft and hard convertible tops are a plus, but make sure they’re in good shape. If over 100,000 miles, ask about the engine’s timing chains.

Memory Lane: Love At First Flight
I became fascinated with helicopters when I did my military service. Like Radar of M*A*S*H* I was a company clerk, except my outfit was a mechanized infantry battalion, not a medical unit. We would go on exercise and sometimes it involved planes and helicopters. As part of the country’s obligation to NATO, we were shipped for a few weeks to Norway where we took part in war games with other member nations. It was in the middle of winter and cold. I remember waking up in the morning and the five-gallon jerrycan of fresh water was frozen solid.
And it was inside the tent.
Winds of Change
We were in the northernmost part of Norway, near the Swedish and Finnish border. For some reason or other, they needed me to do some clerical work at another location. So, I was flown by helicopter, along with other personnel. It was a Bell 212, or more commonly known as a Twin Huey. It had two engines. Flying through the fjords of Norway, the wind was particularly virulent that day, so much so the pilot considered turning back. The sun was shining and the scenery was spectacular. Even though we bounced quite a bit getting there, I was hooked.
When I left my sales representative job with a major oil company, I attended flight school for my commercial pilot’s license. The training copters were Hughes 300C. Only one had a governor, which meant that when flying the other helicopters, you had to control the flow of fuel manually. The throttle was in the handle of the collective. That’s the stick on the side that allows you to change the pitch of the rotary blades in order to go up and down. The greatest advantage I found with the C version was that it had fuel injection. This meant you didn’t have to play with the carburetor heat all the time.
The course went well and I did my first solo around a dozen hours of flight time. I failed my first written exam, passed the second, and passed my first flight exam. To help us build flight times, the owner of the school would allow us to take a helicopter to fairs or mall parking lots to offer helicopter tours. After obtaining permissions and necessary permits, we were good to go. A section would be cordoned off and one of us would take care of loading and unloading the passengers in a safe manner, which included helping them with their seatbelts. You never wanted anyone to walk toward the tail rotor to be turned into ground meat.

Emergency Procedures
I remember one sightseeing flight in particular. This couple is loaded up in the helicopter. The woman was tiny and I don’t think she weighed a hundred pounds. She sat in the middle. The Hughes 300 could fit three people, but the middle seat was small, more suited to a child. Her husband was big and tall. I gave them headsets so we could talk, and I always tried to reassure people about flying in a helicopter, especially if it was their first time. The wife was quiet and not too sure about this since she had never flown in a helicopter. Her husband on the other hand boasted that he had flown many times in Jet Rangers. Those are Bell 206 helicopters with a single engine.
After obtaining permission from air traffic control to take off, I started the tour. Not far from the mall area, there were high tension wires going to a hydro station in the distance. The towers holding the lines were fairly tall, and we had to be at an altitude of 300 feet in order to fly over them. The flight was going well, the day was clear, and the woman was starting to relax. As soon as we flew past the hydro lines, I heard a bang coming from the engine and experienced a sudden yaw of the ship.
The greatest emphasis of learning how to fly is placed on emergency procedures. In the case of helicopters, autorotation is practiced quite a bit. Autorotation is achieved by lowering the collective which disengages the transmission, essentially putting it in neutral. This way, the rotor can spin freely and you control the speed as you descend and flare at the last minute, bring the ship level and land. In this particular case, I could not really autorotate.

Scouting For Locations
There was a four-lane highway ahead. I could not turn around because I was losing altitude and would have had to deal with the hydro lines. There was tall grass all along the side of the highway. And in the distance, there was the hydro station. After I quickly looked at the dials, and realizing the engine was still running, I cranked up the throttle. The needles went into the red, but I didn’t care. It gave me more power and time to find a better place to land a ship that was still going down. Not far from the hydro station was a Toyota dealership. I briefly talked to the passengers in a reassuring manner.
I steered the helicopter toward the parking lot where I could see space on the closest side to us, near a number of new cars parked there. At the edge of the pavement, tall grass was growing. I managed to stretch the flight and land the skids on the pavement. The tail of the helicopter was over the grass. The machine could have flipped over if I had landed in the tall grass since there could have been a depression in the terrain. That’s why I didn’t try to land in the tall grass adjacent to the highway.
The couple had been accompanied by another couple who were going to take the tour next. They saw we had gone down, so they made their way to the Toyota dealership. We hadn’t even landed and the husband was clawing his way out, scrambling to find the door handle. I think he was halfway to his friend’s car by the time the main rotor had stopped turning. The wife was still sitting beside me. She turned to me and said, “that’s what a helicopter engine failure is like?” I replied “yes” without wanting to go into other details. Then she smiled and said, “I’ll fly again.” We reimbursed their fare and I explained to the dealership owner what had happened. He was mowing the lawn in front of the sales office, wondering why a helicopter had landed on his car lot.
Safe & Sound
I called the office to explain the situation and the mechanic showed up at about the same time as a flat bed truck. They removed the blades and loaded up the helicopter. It had not suffered a scratch, nor was a Toyota dinged, but more importantly, nobody was hurt. Every 1,200 hours, the Franklin engines on those helicopters have to be overhauled. This particular engine had 1,165 hours. Because I was fresh out of flight school, I was able to put my training to good use. It turned out that one of the valves got stuck in the cylinder and was smashed by the piston. With the loss of compression, the engine was running on only 3 cylinders, not enough to keep the helicopter aloft with three people onboard.
I flew a few more times professionally. Things like marine survey, taking Santa Claus to the mall, and flying over parks with a ranger to catch poachers. Returning from a park gig one time I got lost, even with a map on my lap. It was dusk. Nearing a small town, I flew low knowing there would be a sign at the entrance to tell folks where they were. Sure enough, the name of the town was on a sign and I was able to get back to my map and make it to base. That was in the early 1980s. They said it was a recession, but it was more like a depression, for those who recall. A lot of companies cut on expenses, such as hiring helicopters. I had to find another source of employment; that of chauffeur to government officials.

Common Ground
Helicopters and automobiles do have one thing in common: gasoline engines. Same thing with my 40-year-old snowblower. It has an 8 horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine. I finally treated it to an electronic ignition coil to replace the points and condenser. The Hughes 300 helicopters were powered by Franklin horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engines developing 190 horsepower. Franklin engines have been around since 1902 and still power a lot of small helicopters. It even powered the Tucker 48 until, it is rumored, other car manufacturers and a certain Senator ganged up on the Tucker Corporation and they were forced to stop production.
Briggs & Stratton have been around since 1908. Steven Briggs and Harold Stratton wanted to build a gas-powered vehicle and ended up manufacturing small engines for all sorts of applications. They are the world’s largest producer of small gasoline engines. It is certain that you or one of your neighbors have a machine that is powered by a Briggs and Stratton engine.
I simply find engines interesting. I once flew a Rotorway Scorpion II home-built helicopter. It had an Evinrude engine in it. It came with the kit. From gasoline engines for cars, trucks, and tractors, to gasoline engines for your generators, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, Sea-Doos, lawn mowers, and snow blowers; to engines for boats, planes, and helicopters, I for one, am very grateful for gasoline engines.

2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4 Review  

Adventure seekers will want to take a look at the 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk. It’s a less expensive way to get something with the more expensive looks of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, plus it comes trail-ready with lots of off-road capability. Jeep says the Compass Trailhawk has 30-degree approach, 24-degree breaker, and 34-degree departure angles. It even has the ability to ford up to 19 inches of water without drowning.
This week, we drove the 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4.
What’s New For 2017 & 2018
The Jeep Compass was all-new for 2017. The vehicle’s redesign included new powertrains and transmissions, updates to the Uconnect system, and the use of FCA’s “small wide 4×4 architecture.” 2018 Jeep Compass Limited models now offer a 4×2 driveline configuration.
Features & Options
The 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4 ($28,595) comes standard with foglights, 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks, a tilt/telscoping steering wheel, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, USB port and auxiliary audio jack. It also comes with push button start, rear backup camera, and power outside mirrors. It comes fitted with an off-road suspension, rear tow hooks, Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system, and front and rear skid plates for better off-road performance.
This tester came with options like the Cold Weather Group ($645), complete with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel; Lighting Group ($895), Safety Group ($795), Navigation ($895), power 8-way driver’s seat ($645), and power liftgate ($495). Total MSRP including destination: $34,060.





Interior Highlights
The front seats are comfortable and adequately supportive for longer drives into the high country for weekend excursions. The contrasting back/red leather interior combo looked good on our Compass tester. There’s enough room up front for taller adults, but rear legroom is tight for this class, although perfect for kids. In terms of infotainment, the 8.4-inch Uconnect interface found in most Jeep and other FCA models is user-friendly.
This Compass Trailhawk came with cold-weather extras like heated seats, heated steering wheel, and windshield de-icer to keep things clear for those winter trips. With the sloped cabin design, visibility is fairly good in all directions and the rear park assist feature, rear view camera, and blind spot alerts are definitely helpful.
You’ll find enough cargo space in the back for carrying a big cooler, sleeping bags, and other camping gear with the rear seats up. The 27.2 cubic feet of cargo room is more horizontal, so you won’t block the rear window. It’s dog-friendly too, if you want to take your four-legged friends along. 





Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs
The Jeep Compass Trailhawk is powered by a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder Tigershark engine that pumps out 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. of torque. This off-road model comes with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It works in concert with the vehicle’s Active Drive Low 4X4 system (20:1 crawl ratio) and Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system. The Selec-Terrain modes include Snow, Sand, Mud, and exclusive to the Trailhawk, a Rock mode. The Compass Trailhawk has an EPA-estimated fuel mileage rating of 22/30 city/highway and 25 combined mpg.
Driving Dynamics
All of our driving in the Jeep Compass Trailhawk was done at altitude, so factor that in if you live below 5,280 feet. In fact, most our driving was done between 6,500 and 8,500 feet. The Trailhawk is good for commuting in nasty weather and has the ability to get you out of sticky situations when winter strikes. The Trailhawk also comes with Hill-Descent Control and 17-inch Falken all-terrain tires.
In the city, the shorter wheelbase makes for easy maneuvering on tight streets and when parking. The safety aids helped keep us from any mishaps. Even with the Trailhawak’s off-road suspension, it offers a relatively smooth ride on the highway, thanks to its more aerodynamic shape.
We took it up a twisting canyon road west of Denver and felt confident in the vehicle’s ability to remain fairly composed at the posted speed limit. There seemed to be enough power, but we were not carrying cargo or gear. Coming up I-70, we found the 2.4-liter powerplant lacking as we tried to pass slower traffic. We pushed hard on the gas and it took time to build up speed. 
Conclusion
The 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4 is designed for adventure seekers who want to get away and enjoy the outdoors. And if you don’t load up on all the available options, it’s a less expensive way to have your cake and eat it too. Overall, the Trailhawk’s best attributes are used off-road where it will take you just about anywhere you want to go.

Chevrolet Introduces Centennial Edition Trucks, Kicks Off 100-Day Celebration

This week at the State Fair of Texas, Chevrolet commemorated a century of truck production by announcing a 100-day commeration, two new special editions, and the Truck Legends customer loyalty program.
“The Chevy Trucks Centennial is a huge milestone for us, and is equally important to our customers,” said Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet Trucks Advertising and Marketing Director. “That’s why we will be celebrating 100 years of Chevy Trucks over the course of the next 100 days.”
Along with the special edition trucks and customer loyalty program, Chevy is also releasing new, branded merchandise through ChevyGearUSA.com and planning a Centennial Celebration on December 16th.
2018 Centennial Editions
The 2018 Silverado and Colorado Centennial Editions feature design elements from Chevy trucks of yesteryear, in particular the Centennial Blue paint, vintage bowtie emblems, and throwback badges.
“The Silverado and Colorado Centennial Editions were a collaboration between Chevrolet Design, Engineering, and Marketing, to commemorate the history of Chevy trucks,” said Rich Scheer, Chevrolet Trucks Director of Exterior Design. “Both vehicles offer our most enthusiastic fans a way to demonstrate their love for Chevy trucks and celebrate the Chevy Trucks Centennial with us.”
The Silverado Centennial Edition is available on the LTZ Z71 crew cab. The Colorado Centennial Edition is offered on Z71 crew and extended cab variants. Silverado Centennial Editions will arrive in October, with Colorado Centennial Editions following in November. A special 1967 C-10 show vehicle commemorating the 100-year milestone will be displayed during the State Fair of Texas through October 22nd; it will then head to SEMA in late October.

Truck Legends Nationwide
The Truck Legends program recognizes customers who own a Chevy truck with more than 100,000 miles, or who have purchased or leased more than one new Chevy truck in their lifetime. Chevy Truck Legends was launched as a Texas-only pilot in September 2016, but has grown to a community of more than 5,400 Chevy truck enthusiasts. Truck Legends members have opportunities to receive front row seats at concerts, passes to Major League Baseball events, and previews of new Chevy models.
Superb Celebration
The 100-day Centennial Celebration will conclude with an official Chevy Trucks Centennial Celebration event on Saturday, December 16th at Texas Motor Speedway. Attendees can meet celebrities like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and experience the latest Chevy vehicles. The event is free but space is limited to invitation only. Truck Legends members will be the first to receive more information on the celebration and invitations.
“It’s important that we share this celebration with our loyal customers who have helped us achieve this accomplishment,” Piszar added.

Performance Milestones
The first Chevy trucks – the half-ton Light Delivery and the One-Ton – hit the market in 1918. Both featured an open chassis behind the windshield. This allowed customers the option to build a specialized body to better match their profession. The 1918 Chevrolet One-Ton truck featured a four-cylinder engine rated at 36 horsepower with a top speed of 25 mph. By contrast, the current Silverado 1500 offers three different engines: a 4.3 V6, 5.3 V8, and a 6.2 V8. The latter creates 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. of torque.
Prior to 1918, Chevy built specialized trucks but only to serve their factories. To date, General Motors has sold over 85 million trucks with a bowtie.
