Automoblog Book Garage: Meeting Marty Schorr
Marty Schorr was destined to be a car guy. His teachers might have showed us his notebooks, which contained more car sketches than coursework. His hot rod club buddies in the 1950s in Westchester County, New York would likely agree. Schorr was always a true car guy. He admits to drawing pictures of cars in school, but the second point requires a little clarification.
“I was really not that good with mechanical stuff as far as working on the cars, so they had to find a job for me in the club,” Schorr said with a chuckle. “So they made me the public relations or publicity director.”
Right Hand Man
As a journalist and editor, Schorr has over five decades of experience with the world’s most amazing machines. He rode with Carroll Shelby and was at the press conference for the debut of the Lola-built Ford GT that became the GT40. He drove the GT40 on the streets of New York City and accompanied Mickey Thompson to Bonneville in 1969 to set a book full of records. And books are Schorr’s thing. His latest, Day One, was featured at the end of December in our Book Garage series. But before all that was just another young man trying to make his way.
“I would take some pictures of the cars and the guys, and go to the track where they put on some shows,” Schorr recalled. “I had a regular job. I was working for an insurance company and I was going to college at night but I was able to meet people at the magazines.”
Schorr would write the club’s press releases and drop them off at Custom Rodder and Car, Speed and Style, two Manhattan-based magazines run by Magnum Royal Publications.
“After doing this for a while, I realized the editor of the magazine didn’t have a driver’s license and he lived in New York City,” Schorr said, pointing out the irony of how one does such a thing. “And while he went to one of the best schools for journalism and he was a good editor, he really didn’t know a lot about cars. He would call me up and ask me questions all the time and that got me started doing freelance work.”

Chance Encounter
Shorr’s weekends filled up quickly for the next couple of years as he hit the area’s racetracks and hot rod shops. His work landed him anywhere from $35.00 to $50.00 per feature, good money considering the time, but not enough to stake a future on.
“I was getting a byline and the magazines were cool, but as I talk about in Day One, I was in a position where I was out of a job – a real job,” Schorr explained. “I was getting married in probably 4 to 5 months and my wife, my future wife, was going to college and she didn’t have a job either. We were not in great financial shape.”
Late one morning, Schorr was delivering his features per the usual. As the elevator opened to take him upstairs, the publisher exits.
“I had only seen him once or twice before but he recognized me,” Schorr recalled. “He said ‘umm, I’m going for a quick lunch; why don’t you hang around and I’ll come back because I want to talk to you.’ So, I went upstairs and talked with the editor, gave him my stuff, and waited until the publisher came back.”
The First Day One
What transpired next is something Shorr refers to as life-changing. Turns out, the editor, Larry T. Shaw, was devoting all his time to CARS, another magazine at Magnum Royal Publications. Custom Rodder and Car, Speed and Style were in need of an editor and the publisher, Irwin Stein, had found his man.
“The publisher comes back, walks into the office, and says ‘how would you like a job?’ So I said ‘what job?’ And he said ‘editor of these magazines.’ I was tongue tied, I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t have a college degree, I was going to school at night, I had never edited anything except my own copy. All I did was nod because I couldn’t get the words out.”
Schorr, then 24 years old, was now making $100.00 a week, with two raises three months apart at $10.00 each. In the span of a few minutes, he had moved from contributor to editor, with a significant pay increase and the responsibility of producing two magazines. By 1965, Schorr had Magnum Royal’s flagship CARS and was made Editorial Director. In the early 1970s, when the company went public, he was named Vice President of Editorial. Schorr would later venture out to produce his own magazines, but that day and Stein’s words still resonate. It was, in so many respects, Schorr’s first “Day One.”

Bill Mitchell launches the Cars Magazine-sponsored Baldwin-Motion 427 Camaro circa 1968. “Mitchell was the first to put a A/MP Camaro into the tens and in a two-year period filled a wall with NHRA records,” Schorr writes in Day One.
The Hook
During his years with Magnum Royal Publications, Schorr regularly drove and evaluated what would become history’s most coveted performance cars. These experiences are recounted in Day One, where we see Pontiac’s 1962 and 1963 lightweight Super-Duty 421 street and Swiss Cheese models, Chevrolet’s 1963 big block 427 Mystery Motor, and Ford’s 1963 Galaxie fastback. There is the Cotton-Owens Hemi Coronet, Plymouth’s original 1968 Hemi Road Runner, Boss 429 Mustangs and so many others.
“It was really a wonderful time to go out and see the engineers, drive the cars, and get up close and personal with the guys that made all this happen,” Schorr said. “Back then, it was just a day’s work and they were just cars. And the following year, they’d be cheaper and they’d be faster, and so we treated them as such.”
Two years ago, while attending the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago, Illinois, the inspiration for Day One arrived. At the time, Schorr’s book Ford Total Performance was being launched by Motorbooks, our esteemed partner for this Book Garage series. It was in Chicago that a candid exchange with publisher Zack Miller took place. Schorr addressed a common misconception about muscle cars, and how mainstream books, car shows, and other media only perpetuate that notion. Miller asked for a hook.
“I said, well I drove those cars when they were new and I know what it’s all about – they weren’t like this. They didn’t look this good, they didn’t have paint jobs like this, and the fit and finish was pretty mundane. We drove these cars and they got dirty when we took them to the track, and they weren’t perfect. Young people coming to these shows walk away thinking that’s what a GTO looked like in 1965, and it was only three thousand and it looked that good. They don’t realize the paint job on the car now is worth more than three grand. I want a book that says this is the way it was, and it’s not exactly the way you see it today.”
Miller broke the brief moment of silence.
“He said to me ‘Marty that’s the hook now write the book.'”

Braking For Vettes
Later in his career, Schorr handled Buick’s East Coast public relations and was extensively involved in the GNX program in 1987, one he credits to changing his mind about the brand. Schorr had a 427 Corvette but the Grand National was a rising star.
“I had driven the prototypes and the car was pretty damn fast – it was quicker and faster than the stock Corvette, and General Motors didn’t like that; Chevrolet didn’t like that,” Schorr recalled. “We did tests at Popular Mechanics with one of our GNXs versus a Callaway, and we mopped up the track with the GNX. We blew the Callaway into the weeds and that was a twin turbo Corvette! We really started a whole little revolution within General Motors with that car.”
A bumper sticker later surfaced with the phrase “We Brake for Corvettes.”

Living The Dream
After conversing with Schorr, I understand why this business – call it automotive journalism – needs such an ambassador. During our interview, on several occasions, he expressed how grateful he was for my time. Should one compare our careers, it’s like the CEO acknowledging the intern. But man, do I ever hold my head higher now. Friends of mine in the profession, Ray Guarino and Joe D., hosts of MotorMouth Radio on WHPC 90.3 FM, refer to Schorr as an “elder in the business” and have the same respect for him I now do.
I have them to thank for the introduction.
Perhaps most inspiring was how I found an instant parallel between myself and Schorr, when he admitted CARS Magazine couldn’t match the larger, California-based publications at the time.
“We didn’t sell as many copies, we didn’t make as much money,” he said. “We didn’t have the advertising but we had an abundance of New York attitude.”
It’s similar here at this publication, minus the signature New York attitude of course. Likewise, we cannot match our larger contemporaries in the business, they simply have more resources. We admire and respect them certinately, but our goal is to be different; to be honest; to be real. It’s why we run features like Book Garage, to which Motorbooks has been instrumental. When we showcase books like Day One, it reminds me of the importance of such things. For me personally, it goes beyond the deadlines and even the cars. It requires me to ask if I am going to live in a “one day” or “Day One” mindset.
“Don’t postpone joy, always try to have fun, and do what you really enjoy doing,” Schorr advised. “I have spent the bulk of my adult life living by those mantras.”

Carbon 65 Corvette To Be Auctioned To Benefit Veterans

General Motors is putting the first retail production Carbon 65 Edition Corvette up for auction to benefit veterans and their families. GM has partnered with the George W. Bush Presidential Center to benefit the Military Service Initiative, which helps post-9/11 veterans and their families adjust to civilian life.
“GM and Chevrolet are teaming up with the George W. Bush Presidential Center to honor and support those who have served and sacrificed to protect the security and freedom of all Americans,” reads a statement from General Motors.
Invisible Wounds
The Military Service Initiative works with communities, non-profit organizations, businesses, academia, and other outlets to provide for the health of post-9/11 veterans and their families. The focus is on helping veterans make a successful transition back to normal life, no matter what that may entail. Some veterans face feelings of isolation, others struggle finding meaningful employment, and all carry the invisible wounds of war. The Military Service Initiative works to address these issues and concerns for veterans and their families.
What’s polarizing is the increasing military-civilian divide. The George W. Bush Presidential Center cites research where 70 percent of Americans say they have little to no understanding of what post-9/11 veterans must overcome. Veterans and their families second that with 84 percent saying the public has “little awareness” of the issues and challenges they face.
GM says about 6,000 veterans work for the automaker currently with another 50,000 retirees having already served.

Carbon 65 Features
The Carbon 65 celebrates 65 years of the Corvette; the first one rolled off the line on June 30th 1953. The package is offered on Grand Sport 3LT and Z06 3LZ trims (order code Z30) but limited to just 650 units. The package marries carbon fiber elements with a new Ceramic Matrix Gray exterior color and a blue top, if it’s a convertible. Carbon fiber treatments include the ground effects, hood section, spoiler, roof (coupe), or tonneau inserts (convertible). The blue Brembo brake calipers compliment either the Cup-style wheels for the Grand Sport or the Blade-style wheels for the Z06.
Inside, drivers will find a Jet Black interior theme with blue stitching and competition seats. The carbon fiber treatments continue throughout the interior, most notably on the steering wheel. Each Carbon 65 Edition Corvette comes with a special identification number.

Kia Hits Value & Performance Sweet Spot With Stinger Pricing

The Kia Stinger arrives next month as the automaker’s highest-performing production vehicle. In a fastback segment typically dominated by European marquees, Kia will stand with the likes of Audi, BMW, and Porsche. We recently dove deep into car’s specifications and they are impressive to say the least. Pricing was recently announced for the Stinger which will come in five different trim levels.
Power & Performance
The entry level Stinger rides on a passive but balanced suspension for comfort and handling. The GT is available with Dynamic Stability Damping Control (a Kia first) and Brembo brakes. On offer are two turbocharged engines: the base Stinger and the Premium feature a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder Theta II plant, producing 255 horsepower (6,200 rpm) and 260 lb-ft. of torque. Torque is available from 1,400 to 4,000 rpm, giving the Stinger a reasonable 0 to 60 time of 5.9 seconds with this engine.
The 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 Lambda II engine packs 365 horsepower (6,000 rpm) and 376 lb-ft. of torque, available from 1,350 to 4,500 rpm. With this engine, the Stinger enters the segment with more power than the Audi S5 Sportback, BMW 440i Gran Coupe, and Infiniti Q50. With the V6 Lambda II engine, the Stinger GT hits 60 in 4.7 seconds, which is quicker than the six-cylinder Porsche Panamera.
The Audi S5 Sportback with its 3.0-liter turbocharged engine hits 60 in 4.5 seconds, just an ounce faster than the Stinger. However, given Kia has never competed in this segment but are coming in with something as strong as the Stinger,  we are inclined to give them a pass.
“The Stinger is a prime example of Kia’s commitment to surpassing consumers’ expectations in everything we do,” commented Orth Hedrick, Vice President of Product Planning, Kia Motors America.
Both engines are matched to a second-generation, eight-speed rear-drive automatic transmission Kia developed in-house. All-wheel drive is available across the Stinger lineup.





Interior Appointments
All Stingers come standard with a leather-appointed cabin, although ultra-soft Nappa leather is available. Air-cell bladders and width-adjusting bolsters are available for the driver’s seat for additional comfort. A thick, hand-stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters is standard, but GT buyers receive a flat-bottom steering wheel.The Stinger also comes with a generous array of connectivity, infotainment, and entertainment features, including an available Harman Kardon 720 watt audio system.
Pricing Comparison
The 2018 Kia Stinger provides solid performance for the dollar, regardless of which trim buyers opt for. The entry level Singer starts at $31,900; the Premium at $37,100, and the GT at $38,350. The GT1 comes in at $43,250 with the GT2 ringing the cash register at $49,200. All-wheel drive runs an additional $2,200; the destination charge is $900.
“Although the Stinger is unlike any other Kia that has come before it in terms of pure driving enjoyment, it is still very much a traditional Kia,” Hedrick explained. “It offers consumers a very compelling value proposition, providing excellent performance and handling, premium features, and functionality when compared to its much higher-priced competitors.”
By comparison, the 2018 Infiniti Q50 starts at $34,200 for the Pure RWD trim with a 2.0-liter turbo engine, and goes as high $53,000 (starting MSRP) in its top variant, the Red Sport 400 AWD. The Q50 also has a hybrid option which starts at $50,600 – tack on $2,000 to make the hybrid all-wheel drive. Conversely, the 2018 Audi S5 Sportback starts at $54,400 for the Premium Plus grade and goes as high as $59,000 (starting MSRP) for the 2018 S5 Coupe Prestige.
Pricing can vary on today’s vehicles – sometimes greatly – especially when considering each different package or individual options. Still, it is our belief the Stinger is priced correctly for the segment and will provide strong performance for the money.

Kia Launches Nationwide Stinger Drive Experience Kia is launching the “Stinger Experience,” an interactive drive program that gives participants a personalized, hands-on experience with the car. Participants will run through several thrilling exercises, including a zero to 60 mile per hour sprint and an autocross-inspired driving course. Consumers in nine different cities can have a go with the new Kia Stinger, as they compare it to other top sport sedans on the market.
Head To Head
Accompanied by professional driving instructors, Stinger Experience participants will take on several dynamic challenges in the Stinger GT, as well as in the Audi A5, BMW 640i Gran Coupe, and Porsche Panamera. Exercises include the aforementioned zero to 60 sprint, a series of cornering tests, and a trip through a slalom course. While there are no direct sales opportunities, on-site specialists will refer those interested in purchasing a Stinger to one of Kia’s nearly 800 dealerships nationwide.
Power & Performance
The foundation for Kia’s Gran Turismo car is comprised of 55 percent advanced high-strength steel. The MacPherson front suspension features large diameter shock absorbers, high-strength wheel bearings, and an aluminum strut brace; the reinforced five-link rear suspension is mounted to a stiffened rear subframe.
On offer are two turbocharged engines: the base Stinger and the Premium feature a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder Theta II plant, producing 255 horsepower (6,200 rpm) and 260 lb-ft. of torque. The second engine, the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 Lambda II, packs 365 horsepower (6,000 rpm) and 376 lb-ft. of torque, available from 1,350 to 4,500 rpm.
“With a faster top speed and zero to 60 time than a six-cylinder Porsche Panamera, the Stinger GT is like nothing anyone has ever seen from Kia before and must be driven to be fully appreciated and understood,” explained Saad Chehab, Vice President, Marketing Communications, Kia Motors America.

In Person
Additional details are available through Kia’s official website for the Stinger Experience. The tour schedule includes stops in Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. During development, the Kia Stinger was subjected to rigorous performance testing on the Nürburgring in Germany, and cuts its teeth on the famed track.
“The Stinger Experience gives people an opportunity to see and feel for themselves just how far Kia has come,” Chehab added.

Groupe Renault Demonstrates Autonomous Technology


Groupe Renault recently revealed their latest autonomous control systems, designed to handle a number of challenging and differing scenarios. The system’s obstacle avoidance capabilities are of particular note as Groupe Renault modeled professional test drivers during development at the Renault Open Innovation Lab in Silicon Valley. This latest initiative by Renault expands their ADAS and vehicle safety programs and is an important next step for the automaker in utilizing automated technology.
“At Groupe Renault, we are focused on being an innovation leader in products, technology, and design,” said Simon Hougard, Director of Renault Open Innovation Lab – Silicon Valley. “Our innovation efforts aim at developing advanced autonomous driving technologies that consumers can trust will create a safer, more comfortable journey.”
Key Locations
The Renault Open Innovation Lab is critical for Renault as they look to establish themselves as a leader in safety and autonomy. The automaker is seeking to becoming one of the first brands to offer “Mind Off” technology for mainstream vehicles, while also having the capability to deploy fleets of robot cars. It’s expected that 15 Renault models will offer different levels of autonomous capability by 2022.
Demonstration Video
The video below shows Callie, Renault’s autonomous car, demonstrating the obstacle avoidance feature. Not only was the system inspired by and modeled after professional drivers, but it was actually tested against them. Callie does a pretty good job maneuvering in and out of the cones. Using professional drivers to develop autonomous vehicles is interesting, especially since Renault has returned to Formula One and has a strong commitment to Formula E. Renault has said they view such ventures as “vectors of innovation.” It’s very well possible those “vectors of innovation” have influenced their latest automated driving initiatives.

2018 Honda Accord 2.0T Arrives, Most Powerful Accord Yet

Expect to see the new Honda Accord 2.0T on dealer showrooms very soon. Honda says this Accord variant is “more powerful and engaging” with a new 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo under the hood. The Accord lineup continues its diversity with the 2.0T, which follows on the heels of the 1.5T released just a month ago. Early next year, the pair will be joined by the Accord Hybrid, featuring the 3rd generation of Honda’s two-motor hybrid technology.
Power & Performance
The Accord 2.0T is powered by a VTEC Turbo inline-four with direct injection and a dual overhead cam setup. With 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft. of torque, the engine is related to the one in the Civic Type R; both share similar design principles. The Civic Type R may be the most powerful Honda in production at the moment, but believe it or not, the Accord 2.0T actually employs a smaller, low-inertia turbocharger for improved low-end response.
Overall, the Honda Accord lineup features two new i-VTEC Turbo engines, a more rigid, lightweight sealed body, and an entirely new chassis. The latter was benchmarked against luxury-class D-segment competitors during development.
Safety & Security
The Accord 2.0T features the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety technologies, including Traffic Sign Recognition. Likewise, Honda is expecting high safety marks from the New Car Assessment Program, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Interior Treatments
Inside, Honda goes for simple connectivity and functionality. The Accord 2.0T includes wireless charging, a 6-inch heads-up display, 12-way power adjustable driver’s seat, and the next generation of HondaLink Assist, the automaker’s connected-car technology. An 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface with sharper graphics and more user-friendly features, like hard buttons for frequently used functions, is also available.
Pricing & Availability
Expect to see the 2018 Honda Accord 2.0T on dealer lots on Monday, November 22nd. We have included a handy pricing and fuel economy chart below. All 2018 Accords for the U.S. market are manufactured at Honda’s Marysville, Ohio plant. Its three new engines are produced at the nearby Anna, Ohio facility, the automaker’s largest engine plant in the world.

2019 Subaru Ascent: Versatile, Performance-Oriented & Lots of Cupholders Subaru has announced the pricing for their highly anticipated three-row SUV, the 2019 Ascent. The Ascent provides an enjoyable driving experience, according to Subaru, and gives SUV buyers a spacious interior, flexible seating options, and a bunch of new safety and in-vehicle technologies. For those wishing for me to cut to the chase, here it is: The 2019 Ascent starts around $33,000 and will go all the way up to $46,000 if you throw the option book at it.
In other words, right in the middle of what SUV buyers are expecting to pay.
To The Rescue
Subaru calls the Ascent “the family-focused SUV” and I can see where they’re going with this. You can only cram one mom, one dad, one baby, and the staggering amount of baby support gear (BSG) into an Outback or Forester. And heaven help you when the second kid comes along. Ergo, you’re going to need a bigger and more SUV-like vehicle, and Subaru is here to help.
You can fit nine people into the Ascent and the last two rows are 60/40 split flat-folding. If you go with the Premium or Limited, you can ditch the second row bench for captain’s chairs at no additional charge. Not only is this swankier, but it also makes for easier access to the third row. There are standard roof rails that fit a number of accessories for carrying your cargo and outdoor gear like bicycles and kayaks and surfboards.
The Ascent is the largest Subaru ever built, riding on a 113.8-inch wheelbase with 8.7 inches of ground clearance. There is up to 153.5 cubic feet of passenger volume and up to a whopping 86.5 cubic feet of cargo space. If that’s not enough for you, I dunno what to say. Other family-oriented features include rear doors that open 75 degrees, making access to the third-row seats easier and/or cramming kids in much more efficient. You want more? How about 19 standard cup holders. Nineteen! America! Right there! Rock, flag, and eagle baby nineteen!

Power & Performance
As with all Subarus since time immemorial, the 2019 Ascent rides on the company’s standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. Also in the drivetrain and chassis department are the Active Torque Vectoring system and four-wheel independent suspension, both to increase traction. Power is produced by Subaru’s evergreen 2.4-liter Boxer engine that uses a combination of direct fuel injection, a 10.6:1 high compression ratio, and a Dual Active Valve Control System. There is a twin-scroll turbocharger and an intercooler to achieve higher performance and efficiency. This all adds up to 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft. o’torque. Say, could I drop that engine into a BR-Z?
Anyway, all Ascents come with a Lineartronic CVT with an 8-speed manual mode function with flappy paddles on the steering wheel. There’s also this thing called X-Mode with Hill Descent Control, just in case. The towing capacity is up to 5,000 lbs., the most of any Subaru. And speaking of towing, there is also Trailer Stability Assist to help maintain vehicle stability while towing.

Connectivity & Infotainment
The available Wi-Fi provides internet access via a 4G LTE communications network that “broadens the range of entertainment options available to occupants using smart devices.” In other words, you can keep the little nippers entertained and quiet. Other tech gizmos include remote engine start from a cell phone (handy in winter), a concierge service, anti-theft vehicle immobilizer, and a child safety function called “geofencing.” Not sure what that is, but it sounds Orwellian and handy for a parent. You can even get firmware updates over the air.
Safety & Security
There’s the standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package that includes Automatic Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, and Pre-Collision Throttle Management. There’s Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert too. And inside, the Ascent is covered with airbags, including side curtain airbags that offer front and rear outboard seat coverage.

Trim Levels & Availability
The 2019 Subaru Ascent, manufactured in Lafayette, Indiana, is offered in four trim levels: Base, Premium, Limited, and Touring. The further up the food chain you go, the more luxury and comfort and convenience stuff you get. Tesla Roadster Revealed (And It’s Powerful)

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold up, hold up . . . Tesla just rolled out a new version of the Roadster out of nowhere. They were just supposed to debut a new, all-electric semi truck, then boom, here’s this gorgeous, new, completely unexpected electric sports car. Sure, sure, the truck is interesting, but at this point, who cares? I don’t. Although the information I have is rather thin, the performance specs are shocking. I mean jet fighter going up against a prop plane shocking.
Ground Rules
Before I dive in here, let’s get a few “minor” quibbles out of the way. First off, this is not really a roadster and it stretches the definition of “sports car.” What the new Tesla Roadster is, form-factor-wise, is a targa. There’s a large-ish removable roof panel – made of glass, which is kind of trick – that stores in the trunk (nice!). Tesla says this gives you “an open-air, convertible driving experience.” No, it won’t. I like targas, but don’t confuse them with convertibles. In a convertible there’s nothing behind your head but beautiful wind turbulence, a sonorous exhaust note, the tarmac you were just on, and the sighs of those jealous souls you just passed. And, more to the point, roadsters are not even convertibles. Roadsters don’t convert. Roadsters have no tops at all. Roadsters are four-wheeled motorcycles. You are out there in the elements, come rain or come shine. Ah, roadsters.
Also, like I said, Tesla is stretching the definition of “sports car” here because their new Roadster has four seats. It’s also unclear just how much room those two chairs in back offer. This could, effectively, be a 2 + 2. That would be tolerable, since some bonafide sports cars are 2 + 2s (Porsche 911s, for example), but if that back seat is actually usable for full grown adults (including fat, lazy American adults) rather than a coupe with dwarf-sized rear seating, then I’ll probably cringe a little bit more at the use of the term “sports car.”
But who cares about that stuff? Check out these specs!

Power & Performance
Zero to 60 in 1.9 seconds! Zero to 100 comes up in 4.2! The quarter mile evaporates in 8.8! Top speed of “over” 250 miles an hour. The torque is 10,000 Nm . . . which is way, way more than seven-thousand foot pounds of torque. I mean, no wonder this thing runs a quarter almost a full second faster than a Kawasaki Ninja; I’ve seen bazooka rounds move slower. Shoot, I’ve seen pro-stock drag cars run slower than that. And this thing comes with a warranty.
Range? 620 miles. That is Detroit to Indianapolis and back with juice left over. Yeah, I know. Range numbers can be finicky, and yeah, I know, you won’t get 600 plus miles out of the thing if you’re blasting off a couple dozen quarter mile runs. But even taking that kind of stuff into consideration, “range anxiety” turns into “range reassurance” pretty quickly.
Oh, and the new Tesla Roadster is all-wheel drive. There’s no details on the drivetrain layout – or for that matter the batteries, where they’re located, weight distribution (shoot, all up weight either), controller specs, cooling needs, and the like – but Tesla has been motivating via all four wheels with both the Model S and the Model X, so my money is on some version of that drivetrain layout.

Comparing & Contrasting
The Roadster has a curious resemblance to Porsche’s upcoming Mission E all-electric car. It has that same sinusoidal roof line and plunging roll-off from the front fenders and hood to the, uh, grill. There is a grill of some sort, low down and much smaller than a car with an internal combustion engine, and is most likely there to cool the controller and its subsystems, which can run hot.
The whole front end is much more aesthetically pleasing than the Porsche. Tesla’s Roadster doesn’t have the dubious headlights that the Mission E has, and although the Roadster’s lights are small and focused and downturned, they don’t come across nearly as squinty and angry as a lot of other modern cars that are dying to say, “look at me, I am a mean and purposeful performance car! Fear me!”
The rear of the Roadster has a very large central venturi tunnel, flanked by two smaller versions. This, undoubtedly, produces lots of downforce, but Tesla doesn’t give us any figures. Also undoubtedly, the underbody of the roadster is probably as smooth as a dolphin since there’s no stuff like drivelines and mufflers and all that. Going full EV must be such a joy to packaging engineers.

Critical Questions
And now, a few inconsequential nit-pickings about those specs. Actually, I have only two. The first is that range number, which is honestly great. But we have to see how that will hold up in the real world, under real-world driving conditions. The other is that terminal velocity of “over 250 mph.” I’m not saying a road vehicle can’t do that, I just have some questions. Like, what kind of tires are you running? How many runs “over 250” can you do before you wear those factory tires down to the chords? How long can you sustain 250 mph before the batteries run dry? I’m not saying the Tesla Roadster can’t hit this speed, I just want to know a bunch about what goes along with that sort of V Max.
Elon Musk, head Tesla dude, personal friend of Tony Stark, very wealthy fiddler of rockets and maglev trains, implied during the roll out that one day, driving a gasoline car will be much less thrilling when compared to its electric counterparts. The crowd seemed very pleased by this. And I am too. The performance potential here, due in large part to the Roadster producing torque like an ocean-going tug, is the rolling definition of thrilling.

Pricing & Availability
Expect to see the Tesla Roadster in 2020. Nothing further than that, but whatever debut date Tesla eventually gives will probably be short by 10 months or so. There is, however, an answer to the question of “how much?” Simple: $200,000, starting. Oh, I do agree. That is a lot of money. Even if this thing can blow you so far off the road that Rui Faleiro couldn’t find you, 200 large is, well, 200 large.
And that’s just the base price. It will cost you $50,000 up front to get the base reservation so you can wait in line for your Tesla Roadster to show up. If you want it quicker, and want to be ushered to the very front of the line, then you need to pay $250,000 for the Founders Series Price. And, if you’d like, you can pay it right now. Tesla is already taking reservations.
When you think about it, $250,000 is what big bore Aston Martins and Porsches and even Ferraris cost. And the Tesla Roadster is not “within range” of those mighty offerings, it surpasses them. Easily. The upcoming Tesla Roadster just moved the performance envelope up and to the right, and it moved it a lot.

Nissan says for 2018, a portion of their lineup proves “black is the new black.” The phrase “the new black” originates from the fashion industry, meaning a given thing is suddenly all the rage. And saying black is the new back in the automotive industry is certifiably true, especially for Nissan. The automaker has moved 50,000 Midnight Edition themed vehicles this year alone.
Given the popularity, Nissan is expanding the Midnight Edition lineup to include Frontier, Titan, and Titan XD. Below is a breakdown of each Nissan Midnight edition by model.
“For 2018, we’ve developed a complete portfolio of the popular, blacked-out Midnight Edition look among nine of our most popular Nissan sedans, SUVs, and now pickups,” explained said Dan Mohnke, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing and Operations, Nissan Division U.S., Nissan North America, Inc. “These dramatic appearing Midnight Edition models reflect the popular aftermarket trend of blackout wheels and trim, but are ready to drive off the dealer lots with full factory quality and warranty coverage.”

Sentra Midnight Edition
Nissan’s small sedan gets rowdy with 17-inch black aluminum alloy wheels, black outside heated mirrors, black rear spoiler, black license plate finisher, and the black V-Motion grille. Available on Sentra SR.
Altima Midnight Edition
Available on the 2.5 SR, this Altima includes black 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, black mirror caps, black spoiler, black Altima and SR rear emblems, and a black rear license plate holder. Up font, Nissan’s signature V-Motion grille sets the stage for the Altima’s overall design. Inside, Prima-Tex heated seats and a navigation system are included.
Maxima Midnight Edition
One of our favorite Nissan cars, the Maxima in this variant (SR) receives a black sport spoiler, 19-inch gloss black aluminum alloy wheels with center caps, black Maxima and SR rear emblems, and a black V-Motion grille with lower surround. Other tech niceties include the Intelligent Around View Monitor and Intelligent Driver Alertness.

Rogue Midnight Edition
The Nissan Rogue Midnight Edition is like many of its SUV stablemates, sharing the signature black V-Motion grille, black roof rails, black rear license plate finisher, black cross bars, splash guards, and illuminated kickplates. Available on Rogue SV.
Murano Midnight Edition
Family-hauling won’t be boring here with 20-inch black aluminum alloy wheels, black outside mirrors, black roof rails, black license plate finisher, and black front and rear lower bumper accents. The V-Motion grille is front and center while black side body moldings, black splash guards, and illuminated kickplates finish off the appointments. Available on Murano SL.
Pathfinder Midnight Edition
Available on Pathfinder SL, this SUV features 20-inch black aluminum alloy wheels, black outside mirrors, black roof rails, black license plate finisher, and the black V-Motion grille. Further exterior appointments include black front and rear lower bumper accents, black rear spoiler, black splash guards, illuminated kickplates, and exterior approach lighting.

Frontier Midnight Edition
The Frontier may be showing its age when compared to offerings from General Motors, Honda, and Toyota, but the Midnight Edtion treatments do dress the truck up. Expect to see a gloss-black grille, 18-inch gloss black aluminum alloy wheels, semi-gloss-black step rails, body-color front and rear bumpers, black outside rearview mirrors and door handles, and special floor mats.
The Midnight Edition Frontier is available in Crew Cab SV, 4×2 or 4×4, with an automatic transmission.
Titan & Titan XD Midnight Editions
The big rigs join the party with a special front grille, darker headlights, black fog light finishers, black outside rearview mirrors and door handles, step rails, and black exterior badging. There are 20-inch black aluminum alloy wheels, body-color front and rear bumpers, and charcoal interior trim. For the Titan, the Midnight Edition is available on Crew Cab SV and SL trims in either a 4×2 or 4×4 configuration. For the XD, it’s Crew Cab SV and SL grades, 4×4 only, and only with the available Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel.
Pricing & Availability
