Longest-Lasting Vehicles: New Data Reveals 14 of Them A study from iSeeCars on the longest-lasting vehicles to reach 200,000-miles is an eye-opener for potential car buyers. If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, this study might be of huge help. It not only covers SUVs, sedans, and pickups, but also offers insight on the longest-lasting luxury vehicles and sports cars. The study ultimately shows that while vehicles today benefit from modern advances in technology and manufacturing, some are simply better than others.
SUVs, for example, are among the most reliable vehicles today.
“A few patterns stood out when we completed this study,” explained Julie Blackley, iSeeCars Communications Manager. “The first is the dominance of full-size SUVs with body-on-frame or truck-based platforms. Also, American vehicles have a strong showing on the overall list, with six full-size SUVs earning the distinction of the longest-lasting vehicles.”
And if you think squeezing 200,000 miles out of your car is absurd, the study also includes the highest percentage of vehicles likely to reach 300,000 miles. Yes, these cars do exist. They are out there somewhere, churning more miles than Forrest Gump on a depression-fueled running binge. Let’s take a closer look.
Combing Through The Data
The study involved over 13.8 million cars sold last year. Using that data, iSeeCars found 14 vehicles most likely to eclipse the 200,000-mile mark. The average nameplate has .8% of its vehicles achieving 200,00 miles or more, but car shoppers can increase their odds by considering one of the 14 entries on the list.
“This is a very important topic, because regardless of if you plan on keeping your car for 200,000 miles, most car shoppers want a reliable and durable vehicle,” Blackley said. “It’s important for consumers to have unbiased information to help them make an informed purchasing decision, which is why we analyzed over 13 million listings to develop this study.”
Big SUVs Stand Out
Earning the top spot is, unsurprisingly, the Toyota Sequoia full-size SUV. The study shows 7.4 percent of Sequoias have logged 200,000 or more miles on the odometer. Tied in second and third place respectively are the Chevy Suburban and Ford Expedition. Next is the GMC Yukon XL (4.0%), Toyota 4Runner (3.9%), Chevy Tahoe (3.8%), and Toyota Highlander Hybrid (3.1%).
Further down the list we see the Honda Ridgeline (3.0%), GMC Yukon (2.8%), Toyota Tacoma (2.6%), and Tundra (2.6%). Also included are the Toyota Avalon, Honda Odyssey, and Lincoln Navigator.
iSeeCars analyzed over 13.8 million vehicles sold in 2018 to find which ones are most likely to hit 200,000 miles. The top 14 have at least 2.2 percent (almost three times the overall average) of their vehicles reaching 200,000 miles. According to the data, SUVs are among the longest-lasting vehicles.
Longest-Lasting Vehicles: Pickup Trucks
According to the study, the top five trucks are the Honda Ridgeline (3.0%), Toyota Tacoma and Tundra (2.6%), Chevy Silverado 1500 (1.9%), and Ford F-150 (1.8%). The Nissan Titan, GMC Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Chevy Colorado, and Nissan Frontier each bring up the rear. The Silverado ranks higher than the Sierra, something we find odd since both come from the same Fort Wayne, Indiana assembly line. Suffice to say, both trucks are mechanically identical, albeit targeted at different buyers.
“We were surprised by this too,” Blackley said. “The Chevrolet Silverado is more of a working truck, while the GMC Sierra markets itself as more luxurious. As such, the Silverado may log more miles since it’s more likely to be used for work purposes.”
A Steel Horse
On this particular list of tough workhorses, the Honda Ridgeline sticks out like a sore thumb. It is the only one with a unibody (unit-body in Honda speak), or a car-like platform. And yet, it manages to be the study’s top truck, besting its more rugged body-on-frame competitors.
“While we weren’t surprised to see this vehicle on the list as Honda has a strong reputation for reliability, we found it interesting that the unibody Ridgeline was the longest-lasting pickup,” Blackley said.
The Honda Ridgeline utilizes six different grades of steel, including high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel in the unit-body. An aluminum hood and front bumper-reinforcement beam combines with a cast-magnesium steering hanger beam. These materials and their placement were determined by strength, safety, and overall performance, according to Honda. Versus the prior generation, the new Ridgeline has 28 percent greater torsional rigidity, meaning it’s more rugged than it looks.
“The success of the Ridgeline has paved the way for other automakers to develop similar pickup trucks,” Blackley added. “These vehicles fill a void by attracting a consumer who wants the function of a pickup truck with the comfortable handling of a crossover.”

Truth In Toyota’s Pudding
Six of the 14 vehicles in this longevity study carry a Toyota badge. The results mirror a similar study conducted by iSeeCars that focused on ownership; specifically cars that original owners were most likely to keep for 15 years or more. After analyzing over 750,000 vehicles sold last year, iSeeCars found that Toyota owners went the distance in terms of ownership. Although revealing, these findings are not exclusive to research conducted by iSeeCars either. Toyota vehicles remain the creme of the crop in other similar studies.
“Toyota performs well in most of our studies related to longevity and reliability,” Blackley said. “These rankings are consistent with other vehicle reliability rankings from other companies like J.D. Power and Consumer Reports.”
“Honestly, I think this is about resale value as much as it is anything else; reliable cars have a higher resale value with all things being equal,” added Tom Blackman, Parts Director at Olathe Toyota Parts Center in Olathe, Kansas. “I also think a lot of older Toyotas are on the road because people have more invested in them.”
Toyota was named for a third year as the Best Brand in Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Awards. Kelley Blue Book said of the award that Toyota has a reputation for building high-quality vehicles. On KBB’s list, the Tacoma received top honors for resale.
“You don’t scrap an old Tacoma that needs work. The same can’t be said for an old Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado,” Blackman explained. “If you buy an old Ford Taurus for $1,200, and it needs a $1,000 repair, you probably just scrap the car; but if you buy an old Toyota Camry for $3,500 and it needs a $1,000 repair, you fix it.”

Engineering Innovations & Customer Commitments
Perhaps one reason why Toyota tops this study from iSeeCars (and other similar ones) is the company’s commitment to quality and innovation. In 2017, for example, Toyota opened their $80 million, 235,000 square-foot Production Engineering and Manufacturing Center (PEMC) in Georgetown, Kentucky.
The facility serves as a home base for more than 600 Toyota production engineers with a 50/50 split between desk and collaboration space. All desks are sit-to-stand and engineers regularly meet with other teams. The goal? All 600 boffins are there to brainstorm and solve problems before a potential issue becomes a huge headache to the consumer.
“Our production engineers are at the top of their game and help shape the future of Toyota,” said Jim Lentz, Chief Executive Officer of Toyota Motor North America. “They push the limits every day on what’s possible in manufacturing to produce ever-better vehicles.”
Blackman believes Toyota “sweats the little stuff” and will always go the extra mile.
“I’ve worked in this business for 30 years, and Toyota is the only automaker I know of that sends engineers out into the field to ask questions,” he said. “If a Toyota vehicle or part has a problem, Toyota sends engineers out to see for themselves. They ask questions and listen to the response. Most of the other brands I’ve worked with are too cheap or too arrogant to send engineers out to look at something.”
“This not only speaks to the quality of Toyota vehicles, but also to the consumers who buy them,” Blackley added.

Longest-Lasting Vehicles: Sedans, Hybrids & Minivans
iSeeCars examined passenger cars, green vehicles, and minivans, where Toyota again held most of the list. The Toyota Avalon is first, then the Honda Odyssey, Accord, Toyota Sienna, and Prius. Rounding out the top ten are the Chevy Impala, Ford Taurus, Toyota Camry and Hybrid, and the Honda Civic. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Lexus RX 450h, and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid also made the list of longest-lasting vehicles.
We’re not surprised to see the Impala and Taurus here. Both are common fleet/rental cars and are more likely to pile up the miles. With regard to everyday family vehicles, Honda takes the gold.
“The Honda Odyssey represents the vehicle segment most commonly associated with family hauling,” Blackley said. “If they do choose to keep a minivan for the long haul, it is most likely to be the Odyssey.”

Tips & Advice: Keep It Simple
There’s a general consensus that – compared to older ones – newer vehicles are less prone to breaking down. But whether old or new, every vehicle has the potential to reach 200,000 miles with proper care and diligent maintenance. While the iSeeCars study points overwhelmingly to Toyota, there are things you can do to keep your vehicle running like clockwork, regardless of make and model. Basic things like regular oil, fluid, and filter changes, and checking the tire pressures and tread depths will benefit your vehicle in the long haul.
“Regardless of whether or not they appeared on this list, every vehicle made today has the potential to reach 200,000 miles with the proper maintenance and care,” Blackley said. “Routine oil changes and following the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance schedule are behaviors that can help a car last longer.”
Tips & Advice: Seasonal Factors & The Power of DIY
Varying weather conditions also affect the longevity of your vehicle. As the seasons change, certain parts in your vehicle can wear faster than others. It’s important to be aware of these top seasonal car repairs to help you cope with the unexpected. The more you know about car maintenance, the more likely your car will stay running for 200,000 miles and beyond.
“My advice is always the same: do the scheduled maintenance, drive it like you want it to last forever, and do as much work as you can yourself,” Blackman said. “It can be a hassle to change your own oil or replace your spark plugs, but it helps you stay on top of things.”
“Don’t forget regular car washes either,” Blackley added.

2017 Los Angeles: The 755-hp 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 zooms into LA Chevrolet landed the most powerful, road-going Corvette yet for the first time in America at the 2017 Los Angeles International Auto Show.
What’s going on?
The 2017 Los Angeles International Auto Show is what’s going on! And Chevrolet just unveiled history’s most powerful production Corvette ever for the first time on American soil. Meet the all-new, completely bonkers 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Originally unveiled in Dubai earlier in the month, the new ZR1 is based on the current generation C7 Corvette and is essentially a successor to the previous C6 generation’s ZR1 form 2009, a car that already boasted ridiculous performance back then.
Now, just imagine that car, except with 755 horsepower and 715 pound-feet of twist and wrapped in the C7’s latest body.



















































 
Yup, you read correctly. 
The C7 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 bests the C6 ZR1’s performance by 117 horses and 111 torques. The new ZR1 is propelled by Chevrolet Performance’s latest LT5 motor, the company’s most powerful production engine yet. It is based off of the Z06’s 6.2-liter LT4 V8. But now, it features an all-new supercharger that’s more efficient with airflow. It continues to be intercooled, offering a total 52 percent more air displacement volume than the Z06 LT4’s setup. General Motors also fitted its first duel-injector fuel delivery system, offering both port and direct injection for optimal fuel atomization.
The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 could be equipped with either a seven-speed manual or an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic, making it the first ZR1 to offer such. Chevrolet didn’t reveal official performance figures just yet, except that they were able to crack a top speed of 210 mph. But to put things in perspective, the last-generation Corvette ZR1 took only 3.3 seconds to hit 60 from a standstill with a top sprint of around the 200 mph mark.
So figure since the new ZR1 has a heck of a ton more power, the new car should be considerably faster in getting to the top.

There’s a wind-tunnel-designed bodykit that can provide up to 950 pounds of downforce at speed.
Being a performance benchmark for not just Corvette lineup, but Chevrolet in general, the ZR1 also boasts even more impressive speed numbers all around than the outgoing model. This comes thanks to significant reengineering of the ZR1’s bodykit, designed specifically for boosting grip with the help of downforce at speed. But the improved aerodynamics aren’t just for downforce, but air-cooling efficiency as well.
For example, the front bumper’s design is specifically shaped to channel air into the engine bay for the intercooler and better overall cooling of the whopping 13 heat exchangers in total in the ZR1. You read correctly. There’s a total of 13 different individual types of radiators for keeping various parts of the car cool. There’s also an signature air duct on the hood, giving the ZR1 a very unique look when compared to other Corvettes, while also being functional.
The extra airflow also contributes to the ZR1’s on-track reliability–by keeping things cool, the ZR1 is able to sustain higher speeds and more aggressive driving for greater extended periods of time.
Laying the power to the ground is a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 supper tires (part of the ZTK Performance Package) while the Magnetic Ride Control gains specific tuning bespoke to the ZR1.
And rounding it all off is a new available Sebring Orange Package–a special exterior color and interior trim arrangement tailored just for the ZR1. It comes with, as you guessed, many items colored in Sebring Orange. Ranging from leather-trimmed seats with orange sueded microfiber inserts, to a Napa leather-trimmed steering wheel.
Chevrolet didn’t announce pricing just yet. But when the last Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 ended production after 2013, it last started at $113,595. Expect the new C7 ZR1 to cost around, if not slightly more, than that figure.

What’s going on?
The Mercedes-Benz CLS was revolutionary from a design aspect. Although it didn’t invent it, the CLS is strongly associated with leading the resurgence of the concept of the “four-door coupe,” dating back to the original car in 2003. Based on the E-Class sedan, but with a much sleeker, low-slung, and stretched out roofline, mimicking that of a coupe, the CLS-Class proved that practicality didn’t have to come at the expense of good looks.
Now, Mercedes-Benz upped their own ante by revealing the all-new, third-generation CLS at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.

It’s beautiful. What’s new about it?
I know, we think so as well. Like previous iterations of the CLS, the latest model remains based off of the E-Class sedan. It features a new design as well, one that’s much cleaner with less curves, folds, and creases, as the outgoing model. It also resembles some of the latest design cues we’ve seen on existing greats like the S-Class and E-Class Coupe. For instance, the new CLS incorporates Merc’s latest corporate “diamond” grille, a feature bespoke only to Mercedes-Benz’s coupe offerings. The frameless doors also remain, as does the high-arched waste line.
“The new CLS is a design icon as the archetype of the four-door coupe. In line with our hot & cool design philosophy, we have reduced its DNA to an extremely puristic level while emotionally charging its beauty,” said Gorden Wagener, Daimler AG’s Chief Design Officer.
On the inside, the CLS now employs the same digital, 12.3-inch LCD displays in place of traditional gauges, similarly to the latest E-Class sedan and coupe, and S-Class sedan and coupe. Also carrying over are other fancy bits found on the aforementioned cars, such as the 64-color adjustable ambient lighting, and a dashboard that offers enough timber to build a house.
Returning to the inline-six
What’s a huge party piece for the CLS however is its engine. For the first time in almost 20 years, Mercedes-Benz is making an all-new gasoline inline-six, which made its debut on the latest CLS. displacing 3.0-liters, it’s rated at 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of twist, with a special electric “boost” function that offers an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of twist.
The CLS 450 comes with the choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz didn’t publish any official performance numbers as of yet, but we imagine the CLS 450 won’t be a slouch by any means.
New suspension too
Also aiding the CLS 450’s introduction as a new car is a revised suspension setup, consisting a four-way multilink arrangement at the front, and a signature Mercedes five-way multilink rear setup. AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension is optional to help balance out body control and handling, but the CLS 450 already promises to be wonderful to drive.
Pricing isn’t yet available, though we can expect that information to surface closer to the CLS’s launch date in Fall of 2018.

GMC showcased the 2018 Yukon Denali Ultimate Black Edition ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show. The new Yukon Denali offers black-painted 22-inch wheels with chrome inserts, polished exhaust tips, chrome mirror caps, carpeted floormats, and a unique Onyx Black exterior paint. GM’s “special editions” are a reoccurring theme throughout the company, especially for Chevrolet, where the popular trims extend beyond SUVs and to the 1500 series and HD trucks.
“The Yukon Denali has always made a bold and powerful statement, and the Ultimate Black Edition takes that expression to a new level,” explained Stu Pierce, Senior Marketing Manager, GMC Trucks and Full-Size SUVs.
Essential Equipment
Buyers automatically get the Open Road Package, which consists of a nine-month trial of Sirius XM and NavTraffic, power sunroof, rear-seat entertainment system, and the Enhanced Security Package. The latter includes door and liftgate lock shields, glass breakage sensors, interior motion detectors, a self-powered horn, and vertical movement sensors. Power-Retractable Assist Steps and Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Automatic Braking finish off the package.
Inside, the Yukon Denali Ultimate Black Edition is trimmed in Mastique Ash for added richness and luxury. Under the hood resides a 6.2-liter V8 mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

GMC In LA
GMC partnered with Little Damage, a Los Angeles ice cream shop, to celebrate the debut of the new Yukon. During the course of the Los Angeles Auto Show, attendees can enjoy a special “Ultimate Black” flavor with Denali chrome chocolate chips in the charcoal cones Little Damage is famous for.
If they move this unique ice cream flavor like GM moves SUVs, expect the employees at Little Damage to be busy. 2017 has been GMC’s strongest year of Denali sales ever. Although GMC offers the trim on other vehicles, the Yukon and Yukon XL dominate the portfolio at 50.7 percent and 61.2 percent respectively. Earlier this year, the one millionth Denali sold since the premium trim was first introduced for the 1999 Yukon.

Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant Responds To Growing Luxury Vehicle Demand The Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator are selling like hotcakes! Lincoln dealers say they cannot order new Navigators fast enough; the luxury SUVs are on the lot an average of just seven days before being sold. It’s a similar story for the Expedition, with an increased transaction price of $7,800 and retail sales up nearly 57 percent last month. Like the Navigator, the new Expedition is lucky to spend a week on dealer lots, with the high-level Platinum trim accounting for nearly 30 percent of total sales.
“The response from customers regarding our new full-size SUVs has been exceptional,” said Joe Hinrichs, President, Global Operations, Ford Motor Company.
Demanding The Finest
It’s worth noting how the higher trim levels continue to be the most desired in Ford’s lineup. With regard to the Navigator, nearly 85 percent of all buyers are opting for the higher-end Black Label and Reserve models. In fact, demand for the Black Label and Reserve series contributed to an average transaction price increase of more than $21,000 in January versus a year ago. Add to that how Navigator retail sales were up triple digits in every region of the country last month, and the growing interest from younger buyers, and it’s easy to see the demand is there.
In order to meet this seemingly insatiable appetite for large, luxurious SUVs, Ford is doubling down on their manufacturing strategies at the Kentucky Truck Plant, home of the Navigator and Expedition. The magic number in Louisville is 25: Production targets were increased approximately 25 percent and an additional $25 million is coming to increase overall “operational fitness.”

Factory Fit
The investment covers more than 400 new robots at the Kentucky Truck Plant, many of which were utilized during a remodeling of the body shop last year. The robots inevitably increase line speed but also keep employees safe from repetitive-motion injuries. A special “robot lab” was added, where software is tested and potential issues undergo troubleshooting away from the factory floor.
Also onsite in Louisville is a new 3D printer so parts and tools can be made quickly and economically. In most cases, manufacturing a prototype part with traditional methods can take eight to 16 weeks at a cost of more than $250,000 in tooling. Producing that same part with 3D printing can take days – or maybe just hours – and can be done for a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

Analytics & Vending Machines
Finally, the investment includes an overhaul to the data analytics system so the assembly line moves as efficiently as possible. These systems are as interesting as they are complex but in short, they help plant officials address thousands of concerns in near-real time. The “data analytics hub” at the Kentucky Truck Plant includes seven big-screen TVs with minute-by-minute updates showing whether production is on schedule or not. Any potential concerns are flagged and can be addressed accordingly.
The system also notifies workers as parts are running low so they can have a new batch delivered to their area before they run out. And like in the break room, a spare parts “vending machine” allows workers to easily locate any part.
“Using a combination of Ford’s advanced manufacturing and American hard work and ingenuity, we’ll deliver more high-quality Lincoln Navigators and Ford Expeditions to customers than originally planned,” Hinrichs said.

Kentucky Truck
The Kentucky Truck Plant opened in 1969 and employs more than 8,400 people, about 8,100 of which are hourly. The plant builds the Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Super Duty. Like the two former, the latter has a higher-end trim level Ford says is directly proportional to what buyers are looking for today, i.e. luxury and premium features. In fact, the demand for all three is so strong, workers are taking overtime, voluntary, and weekend shifts in Louisville.

The 2019 QX50 will be powered by the world’s first production variable compression ratio engine. Infiniti announced the engines in the summer of 2016 after working on the technology for 20 years. The QX50’s 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine adjusts its compression ratio to maximize performance and efficiency. The mindset behind the design is that it combines turbo power with diesel efficiency. Infiniti says this “challenges the notion that only hybrid and diesel powertrains can deliver high torque and efficiency.”
Solid Foundation
An entirely new front-wheel drive platform supports the 2019 QX50, and although Infiniti didn’t say specifically, we imagine this architecture is instrumental for the VC-Turbo engine’s capability. The platform was designed with an emphasis on refinement, rigidity, and interior room. Infiniti did not immediately provide dimensions, only saying the interior space is unmatched in the segment.

Exterior & Interior Design
The 2019 QX50 strikes a balance between aerodynamic efficiency and Infiniti’s “Powerful Elegance” design language. The body lines are noticeable and sleek; the vehicle does have quite a bit of character. Inside, the automaker promises top grade materials and craftsmanship, a calm, connected ambiance, and driver-focused technologies, including a complete ADAS suite. Infiniti notes the importance of having a human element in the details and says the new QX50 is designed accordingly.

Infiniti did not include either in their press materials.

Letter From The UK: The Meaning of Crossover


Initially, my idea was to discuss and update Britain’s exit from the European Union (or Brexit as it has come to be known) and its affect on the UK car industry. Unfortunately nothing much has happened. Car manufacturers wait in exasperated anticipation while UK and EU politicians and their bully boy un-elected flunkies argue, throw their toys about, and run home crying. So instead, this week we have advertising, something else that sets my teeth on edge like fingernails scrapping down an old school blackboard.
Black Friday. We have it here too and, America, it’s your fault. Being British of course we do not fight over goods; we do not battle for that last LCD flat screen, no: We queue nicely and wait our turn to buy stuff that was probably to be found cheaper, somewhere else, prior to Black Friday. The fault lies firmly at the feet of advertising executives. In their increasing desperation to come up with new and inventive ways to sell things, advertising is getting more and more silly. Take the “crossover” car.
Cross Over
That’s what the chicken did. It’s what artistes do when they cravenly change music genres to achieve commercial success, much to the disapprobation of their fellows who failed to think of it first. It also now identifies a type of vehicle but I have no idea why.
It is frankly, daft. In British terms, a crossover is just a tall hatchback or a small SUV, depending upon who you listen to. It is in fact just a small car, inflated. Initially, I suppose, the idea was to give the impression that these motors were somehow more rugged. It patently was not true then and it is not true now. They don’t have any more ability or power and can maybe only boast a little more space than the regular small hatchback upon which they are mostly based. It is a case of style over substance.
In days gone by, car advertising was straightforward. One knew where one stood. It described the virtues of the vehicle. It told us by way of the magic of moving pictures how a particular car could improve our lives by dint of its automotive features, performance, sexiness, service intervals, and economy. Everyone was happy. The auto facts were presented. Motoring journalists plied their trade in the large halls and small bars of the world, supporting a generally robust industry.
This vintage Packard advertisement explains how the new models for 1953 have higher compression V8 engines and power steering. Packard says the new Clipper provides “big-car value at medium-car cost” because of the engineering within. As all Packard ads did at the time, it concludes with “ask the man who owns one,” meaning the brand’s reputation is best communicated by those who drive them every day.
The Influencers
Times have changed and with it, the scope of the car ad. Dusty old journalists with pipes and leather patches on their threadbare tweed jackets have given way to bright young things referred to as influencers and vloggers because every car maker in the world wants to sell to the youth of today. Even the new Aston Martin Vantage (which does not look anywhere near as elegant as its predecessor) is, by the company’s own words, aimed at younger buyers.
Young people, with no discernible creative ability other than being able to walk and talk at the same time, shoot video on a bog-standard DSLR and upload it to YouTube and are now actively being employed and paid to shoot cars in moodily visual locations without explaining how they work. And that it seems is enough. We do indeed live in a transient internet world.
TV advertising now shows us beautiful, blemish-free youth cavorting merrily in these very average “crossover” cars as if the vehicle could really make your life better in any way that matters. The message comes through the TV screen with all the subtlety of a one-ton anvil in a Roadrunner cartoon. It is obvious, it is blatant, and it seems to work. The crossover is now the most popular automotive sector in the UK. There is no longer any need to describe the engineering virtues of the vehicle, just the nebulous lifestyle connotations.
This writer is probably as guilty as the rest. Like everyone who works in today’s motor industry, I too am an influencer but only in that I help to promote products and businesses. Mind you, you don’t want me on video; that would be like getting Gabby Hayes to sell your wagon. Car advertising is changing and we change with it, at least for now, because who knows what the future holds.
Millennials are seen enjoying a late model Fiat 500X. A 2013 Adweek feature penned by David Gianatasio explains that Fiat, in an attempt to gain traction in the United States, targeted younger consumers via social media. However, Gianatasio notes many U.S. Fiat dealers felt that strategy lacked a “broad-based” approach and cites Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne telling Automotive News in 2012 the initial advertising campaign was a “poorly executed plan.” Adweek ultimately concluded that Fiat “excelled at peripheral marketing programs while ignoring the bigger brand-building picture.” Photo: FCA US LLC.
Cross Over To Common Sense


At the time of this writing, a small neighbouring country is threatening to block the progress of vital trade talks in the next round of Brexit negotiations because of some local issue. That’s the thing about “communities.” When push comes to shove, we revert to the defence of our realm. Never mind the big picture; never mind the European car industry is all at sea with huge sums of money and very many jobs hanging in the balance. We await an outcome whilst third rate apparatchiks haggle over political trivialities. That’s why the whole thing has stalled.
If these people do not get off their collective euro-butt, stop scoring points, and being devious and disingenuous, and decide instead to “cross over” the line of common sense about the things that really matter, then all the advertising and all the influencing in the world won’t save the car industry. Or Europe.

These Special Lexus Models Will Be Rare Did you know Lexus has been making “F” cars for ten years? Wait, did you know that Lexus was even making F cars? I did but I didn’t know that. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew Lexus had this F designation, but I never knew what it designated. So here we are, ten years on, and we get to celebrate, what, exactly?
According to Lexus, that F badge means the car has “the purest expression of Lexus performance.” Sure, whatever. Essentially F is to Lexus what M is to BMW and S is to Audi. F is the performance sub-brand within Lexus itself. And, to say the least, Lexus is pretty durned happy about making these things for ten years.
Windy City Showcase
They are so happy in fact, that at this year’s Chicago Auto Show, the Japanese luxo-brand rolled out not one but two commemorative rides: The 2018 Lexus GS F and RC F 10th Anniversary. The GS F and RC F special editions are set to arrive at Lexus dealers this summer and, unsurprisingly, will come with exclusive features befitting of limited-edition models.
Starting with the outside, both cars come in a matte finish Nebula Gray paint scheme. This is a fond return to matte finishes for Lexus, since the last time they used it was on their LFA supercar. And while we’re here: Hey Lexus, when are we going to get a follow-on to the LFA? Anyhoo, Lexus says this new Nebula Gray has been toughened up for “the rigors of everyday use, including the ability to withstand the average mechanized car wash.” That’s nice of them.
Polished black multispoke 19-inch wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires come standard, and contrast nicely with the dark gray paint. Beneath these fancy wheels are blue brake calipers to add a splash of color.

Deep Blue Something
On the inside, that theme continues with blue carbon fiber trim for the panels and dash with blue leather accents throughout. Further cool anniversary stuff to be found in the RC F coupe are the sport seats outlined in blue leather with white accents, and a blue shift knob. Same goes for the steering wheel and instrument panel. For the GS F, there’s additional blue carbon trim on the center console, a blue suede dash, and blue seatbelt straps.
Blue, blue, blue. Everywhere blue!

Power & Performance
Powertrain-wise, both the coupe and sedan work with the same 467 horsepower 5.0-liter V8, but there are differences and tweaks here and there. The plant in the RC F coupe sends the grunt to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic box. Lexus says this is good enough to scoot to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. Nice! There’s also a Torsen limited-slip diff as standard, along with variable dampers (shocks) and multiple drive modes. If you want to take up the option, there’s a torque vectoring differential available. Take it.
Like I said, the GS F sedan has the same mill and also works with the same eight-speed automatic to put power to the rears. The torque vectoring diff, however, comes standard. Even though the GS F is a sedan, it is only a tic slower than the RC F coupe, clocking 4.5 seconds from a stop to 60 mph. Oh, and it gets up to 24 mpg on the highway. Not bad! Variable dampers? Check. A selection of drive modes? Also check, but there’s a full custom setting allowing you to adjust different parameters. Slick.

Pricing & Availability
Finally, there is the nearly compulsory engraved plaque bragging about the car’s limited-edition status. And by limited, Lexus means only 240 10th Anniversary RC Fs will be seen on the streets. That works out to one anniversary RC F per U.S. dealer. So get line now. If your tastes run more toward the GS F, you really got to hustle, since there will be only 100 of them.
Lexus says there will be additional packages for both, but cryptically notes they “will be required.” What on Earth that means, I do not know. There’s no word on pricing either.

Range Rover Sport Climbs To Heaven’s Gate The Range Rover Sport has just completed the Dragon Challenge, climbing up to the arch of Heaven’s Gate, one of China’s most famous landmarks. The Range Rover Sport is the first vehicle in history to accomplish such a feat, covering nearly a thousand steps after it started at the bottom of the seven-mile Tianmen Mountain Road, also known as the Dragon Road.
“This was the hardest Range Rover Sport challenge I’ve ever been involved with because, until we reached the top, we couldn’t categorically say we would succeed,” explained Phil Jones, Land Rover Experience Expert.

Stairway to Heaven
The Range Rover Sport was fitted with special, reinforced tires for Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Ho-Pin Tung, who piloted the SUV for the endeavor. The Range Rover Sport was equipped with the Terrain Response system and placed in “Dynamic” mode. At the summit of the road, Ho-Pin Tung optimized the Terrain Response system for the second part of the challenge, allowing him to climb the 45-degree staircase consisting of 99 turns and 999 steps, ultimately leading him to Heaven’s Gate.
“I’ve experienced Formula E, Formula 1, and won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans but this was without doubt one of the most demanding driving challenges I’ve ever faced,” he said.
“By making it to the summit, we’ve proven the phenomenal capability of the Range Rover Sport like never before – with a genuine world first,” Jones added.





Endurance Marathons
The Dragon Challenge is the latest in a series of events completed by the Range Rover Sport, which received a host of technology and design updates for 2018. The vehicle made its debut in a race against two-time open-water swimming world champion Keri-anne Payne and endurance athlete Ross Edgley in Devon, UK. Previous accomplishments include a record-setting hill-climb at Pikes Peak, a record-crossing of the “Empty Quarter” desert in the Arabian Peninsula, and a 7,119 foot descent of the Inferno downhill course in Mürren, Switzerland.
