2018 Ford Expedition FX4: For The Great Unknown (Or Getting Groceries)

2018 Ford Expedition FX4: For The Great Unknown (Or Getting Groceries)

Okay, so Ford says their all-new, 2018 Expedition with the FX4 Off-Road Package is the most “off-road-capable Expedition ever,” to which I say so what? If you think about it, that’s not saying much, given how little your average SUV is driven off-road, let alone in extreme off-road conditions. Ford more or less admits this by saying, “for the more than 20 percent of Expedition owners that use their SUV for off-road adventure, Ford introduces the all-new 2018 Expedition FX4 Off-Road Package, making this the most off-road-capable Expedition ever.”
Too Much Or Just Right?
In other words, only one out of five Expedition owners actually drive off the pavement. That’s like Craftsman saying, “hey, did you know that 20 percent of people who buy our tools actually use them to turn screws with?” That’s really nothing much to crow about, Ford.
So the all-new, 2018 Expedition with the FX4 Off-Road Package is better at going off-road. Good, I applaud that. I really do. But as it sits on the showroom floor, don’t expect any of these guys to be turning up at King Of The Hammers or the just run Mint 400. It’s better at running off-road no doubt, but it sure ain’t going to be running in this year’s Dakar Rally. Mostly, it will excel doing what most prospective owners want it to do: commute, haul groceries, get the kids to school and back, or soccer practice and back, and, two or three times a year, maybe do some camping. That’s the truly ironic thing here. Ford has done all these rather impressive upgrades and yet a majority of owners will never use it for that.

Lightweight & Intelligent Tech
It all starts with the Expedition’s high-strength, aluminum-alloy body, which is new this year, and the redesigned high-strength steel frame. Going this route cut 300 pounds, which is a lot. It’s like carrying a dirt bike for free, weight-wise. Anyway, that’s just the starting point for Ford. From there on out, they hang on lots of genuine off-road goodies that are pretty interesting.
For starters, there’s the patented electronic limited-slip rear differential. This helps improve off-road performance in low-traction situations, obviously, by automatically varying power side-to-side – that’s what limited slip diffs do. The thing is geared at 3.73:1 and is electronically limited, rather than the old fashioned sorcery of mechanical diffs (which I still don’t understand, to be honest). The Expedition’s new electronic diff also enhances towing performance and capability, which is a good thing.
There are off-road-tuned shocks, which are more stiff and designed to keep the wheels planted terra firma, whether that’s the road, the dirt or the etc. And of course the FX4 package comes with better all-terrain tires. These off road meats come with thicker sidewalls to preserve a smooth ride while bringing the traction needed over bad terrain.

Proper Protection
Did you say skid plates? Oh my yes the 2018 Ford Expedition FX4 has skid plates. This thing has seven skid plates. The seven deadly skids, if you will. There’s a new sand shield to protect the turbocharger intercoolers from getting clogged when driving through tall berms and sand dunes, plus steel plates to protect the steering gear, the engine, the transmission, and transfer case, plus a full-length guard for the fuel tank. Also, the chin spoiler beneath the front bumper has been shortened to improve approach angles.
In the non-technical category, there’s a slew of bits and pieces and parts to make your 2018 Ford Expedition FX4 look good. There are 18-inch Magnetic Metallic-painted cast-aluminum wheels unique to the FX4, chrome running boards, and FX4 badging on the liftgate and front fender. And there is also the handy little goody of new rubber floor liners that feature deep side sills. Think of these as factory versions of WeatherTech floor liners. They can be removed and cleaned of any mud, sand, water or what have you without all that gunk making it into your much harder to clean carpet.
Photo: Ford Motor Company.
Terrain Management
The FX4 Expedition also comes with Ford’s new Terrain Management System. The TMS lets you select from seven drive modes that automatically adapt to different road conditions. There’s normal mode for around town driving; sport for “more spirited trips;” tow/haul for improved towing and hauling performance, obviously; eco for better fuel economy; grass/gravel/snow for loose terrain; sand for even lower traction situations and, at the far end of the scale, mud/rut for traveling over uneven surfaces. You can manually select either 2WD or 4WD in any mode.
Power & Performance
The all-new Expedition has tons of interior space, the-now-ubiquitous connectivity and smart technology features everyone expects, and the much-loved EcoBoost engine. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost cranks out 375 ponies and 470 lb-ft. of torque. It also comes standard with Auto Start-Stop and a new 10-speed transmission. Towing? How about 9,300 pounds? Not bad.
The 2018 Ford Expedition FX4 goes on sale this fall. So sure, 80 percent won’t notice what all that stuff is there for, but for the other 20 percent of you, enjoy.

The Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is the most powerful road-going Jaguar ever

The Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is the most powerful road-going Jaguar ever Thanks to upgrades from Jaguar-Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 cracks 200 mph.

What’s going on?
The Jaguar XE is a compelling alternative to the compact luxury sports sedan perennials from Germany. But ever since the XE came out, there hasn’t been a competitor to the high-performance variants of the Germans such as the BMW M3, Audi S4, and Mercedes-AMG C-Class…until now.
Meet the all-new Jaguar XE SV Project 8, the most powerful and agile road-going Jaguar ever made.
As the first hand-assembled model by SVO, the new Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is the culmination of Jaguar-Land Rover’s $25 million investment into the SVO Technical Center in Warwickshire, UK. Basically, the it’s the performance branch to Jaguar, like Mercedes-AMG is to Mercedes-Benz, and BMW M Division to BMW.
“SVO’s raison d’être is to produce halo vehicles that push the boundaries in terms of luxury, performance and all-terrain capability. Project 8 is a great example of what happens when enthusiastic designers, engineers and manufacturing specialists are given the opportunity to create an extreme performance sports car without compromise,” said John Edwards in the car’s launch statement, the managing director for J-LR Special Operations. “Project 8 will be assembled by hand in the new SVO Technical Center, and we’re confident that our enthusiastic and demanding clients will love driving Project 8 as much we do!”
What’s cool about it?
The first thing you’ll notice about the Jaguar XE SV Project 8, besides its radiant orange hue, is the bonkers boy-racer performance kit. The front lower fascia gains a new look with odd-looking vents meant to gobble up massive volumes of air for cooling and aerodynamics. But more so, the entire kit reduces the weight of the XE, thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber for both front and rear bumpers, the adjustable rear wing, and the rear diffuser.
Under the hood sits the latest and greatest iteration of Jaguar’s ubiquitous AJ-V8, displacing 5.0-liters and with support from a supercharger, producing 592 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Those 592 horses go through a ZF-sourced eight-speed Quickshift automatic and all-wheel traction to help put the power down. Jaguar claims a top speed of over 200 mph and a 0-60 time of 3.3 seconds.

Though carbon-based materials don’t just find themselves in body parts. The Jaguar XE SV Project 8 also comes standard with Jaguar’s latest Carbon Ceramic Brake system, making it the first Jaguar to feature the system. The CCB system also works in tandem with the stability and traction control and the Electronic Active Differential with Torque Vectoring by Braking to counter understeer. In simplified terms, the XE SV Project 8 basically utilizes braking power to simulate what a typical, mechanical limited-slip differential and stability control would do under aggressive cornering. But now, the systems work more with each other and are optimized for increased performance.
While you can get into the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 and just go anywhere like a bat out of hell, Jaguar equipped the vehicle with fully adjustable Continuously Variable Dampers in the suspension. Owners can adjust the ride height and shock stiffness, making it the most track-biased SVO car to date. Additionally, other details include a swap out of various bushings and bits for more expensive more capable ones to help reduce mass and improve handling response and precision.
On the inside, the Project 8 features four seats only, versus the standard XE’s five. Up front sit magnesium-framed Performance seats with contrast stitching and Premium Jet leather, complemented by Miko suedecloth trim. Alcantara festoons surfaces such as the dashboard, door panels, and steering wheel. And although the Project 8 is performance oriented, there’s still plenty of Jaguar swag to keep things luxurious.
A 10.2-inch tablet-like touchscreen comes standard for the Jaguar InControl Touch Pro infotainment system. For those keeping tabs on track times, there’s even an integrated stopwatch and telemetry application to help bolster track-day bets with friends. Above it all, the Project 8 is also one fast 4G WiFi hotspot.
When can I get one?
Jaguar-Land Rover SVO claims only 300 of these Project 8s will hit production worldwide and only in left-hand drive. Prices aren’t available just yet, but that should surface closer to the car’s launch, following its debut at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed. And expect to be high.

Aston Martin Confirms First All-Electric Vehicle With RapidE

Aston Martin Confirms First All-Electric Vehicle With RapidE

A concept vehicle no more says Aston Martin, confirming the RapidE will come to fruition. The forthcoming all-electric RapidE underscores Aston Martin’s commitment to low- and zero-emission vehicles, a critical component of the automaker’s Second Century Plan as directed by President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Andy Palmer.
The vehicle was developed alongside Williams Advanced Engineering in Grove, Oxfordshire, England.
Concept Rooted
The RapidE is based upon the Rapide AMR concept and will look similar to the Rapide S, although an all-electric powertain will replace the V12 of the Rapide S. Aston Martin promises “instantaneous delivery characteristics,” meaning the RapidE will probably be a blast to drive. The RapidE Concept first appeared in October 2015 and according to Aston Martin, was a significant milestone toward an electrified portfolio.
“RapidE represents a sustainable future in which Aston Martin’s values of seductive style and supreme performance don’t merely co-exist alongside a new zero-emission powertrain, but are enhanced by it,” Dr. Palmer said. “RapidE will showcase Aston Martin’s vision, desire, and capability to successfully embrace radical change, delivering a new breed of car that stays true to our ethos and delights our customers.”
Photo: Aston Martin The Americas.

Valuable Partnerships
The aforementioned Williams Advanced Engineering has played, and will continue to play, an important role in bringing the RapidE to market. The company feels honored to be apart of the vehicle’s development.
“This project with Aston Martin will draw on the extensive battery and EV experience we have accumulated, and we are extremely pleased to be supporting this prestigious British company with their future electrification strategy,” explained Paul McNamara, Technical Director, Williams Advanced Engineering.
McNamara also touched on the importance of working together when it comes to developing more energy efficient automobiles.
“Williams Advanced Engineering has always endeavored to work collaboratively with its customers to meet their sustainability challenges and find energy efficient solutions,” he said. “For today’s car manufacturers, this is particularly important as legislation demands more energy efficient vehicles.”
Supply & Production
The Aston Martin RapidE will have a limited build run of 155 units; expect production to get underway in 2019. Those who enjoy more traditional powertrains from the British marquee need not worry.
“The internal combustion engine has been at the heart of Aston Martin for more than a century, and will continue to be for years to come,” Dr. Palmer added.

2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6 Review

2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6 Review

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” is a motto credited to an old Georgia farmer who was talking about the government. Toyota has a habit of fixing things that aren’t broken but it has worked well for them. The Toyota Camry midsize sedan has been America’s best-selling car it seems like forever, and it’s still the best-selling model, thanks to Toyota engineers who keep fixing it. Simply put, it keeps getting better with age.
It stands in a super-competitive segment with the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Hyundai Sonata. This week, we drove the 2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6.
What’s New For 2017
Toyota is taking a breather from fixing the Camry and the sedan has changed little for 2017. Even then, Toyota has tweaked the Camry’s top trim levels for more standard features, including an upgraded infotainment system and a wireless charging pad.
Features & Options
The 2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6 ($31,370) comes with 18-inch wheels, LED running lights, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather and simulated-suede upholstery, the aforementioned charging pad, an upgraded Entune system with 7-inch display, a smartphone app-based navigation system, and a 10-speaker premium audio system with satellite and HD radio. V6 models also get LED headlights, a sunroof, a noise-reducing windshield, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Camry XSE adds a universal garage-door opener, auto-dimming mirror, and dual exhaust outlets.
Our XSE tester came with the optional Blind Spot Monitor ($500), Navigation ($710), and the Technology package ($750) that added adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and mitigation, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. Total MSRP as tested including destination: $35,903.

Interior Highlights
The cabin of the 2017 Camry XSE hasn’t been changed much either since the 2015 remodel. The XSE has door sills that light up, comfortable, heated sport leather seats, and ultrasuede inserts with extra side bolstering. The interior features contemporary styling that’s simple yet with an elegant feel. There’s an abundance of contrasting stitching on the seats, doors, dash, center console, shifter boot, and steering wheel adding to the ambiance.
The climate control and premium audio with simple and easy to use controls is refreshing compared to some models. That’s not always the case in the cabins of some other automaker’s upper trim levels.
The 2017 Toyota Camry features one of the most comfortable and spacious cabins in the midsize sedan segment. The backseat offers plenty of room for taller adults and a rear-facing child seat can be installed. It will fit easily in the back. There’s also lots of storage and cubby holes up front to place things. Space in the trunk, at 15.4 cubic feet, is average for a midsize sedan.

Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs

Our Camry XSE tester came powered by the optional 3.5-liter V6 that produces 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft. of torque. The sedan features a front-wheel drive configuration and a six-speed automatic, with Eco/Sport modes and steering wheel paddle shifters. With the V6, the Camry XSE gets an EPA-estimated 21/30 city/highway and 24 combined mpg. The mpg rating puts it on par with the competition.
Driving Dynamics
As is our practice, we took the Toyota Camry XSE into the mountains, west of Denver, to see how the V6 handles the altitude and the elevation change. Between Denver, which is 5,280 ft. above sea level and Evergreen, which is 8,500 ft. above sea level, is where I live. The 3.5-liter V6 engine delivered above average acceleration for a family sedan. Transmission upshifts are responsive, which is noteworthy, given that some competitor’s automatic transmissions are lethargic for the sake of fuel economy.
We kept the 6-speed automatic in Eco for a relaxed driving experience but dropped it into Sport mode later on. We used the steering wheel shifters for extra engagement while passing trucks on I-70. The sport-tuned suspension is responsive to driver inputs and fairly composed when going around tight mountain curves. The XSE dials up driver engagement if you have an itch to push the Camry a bit harder. It’s not as sporty as other rivals like the Mazda 6, but it’s not a rolling couch potato either.
Toyota’s V6 will sprint from 0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds, making it one of the quickest cars in the class. Fuel mileage suffers if you use that available power, however. The XSE’s 225/45R18 tires do provide a bit more grip than the standard Camry’s smaller meats; an advantage that’s intangible to the average driver. The sport suspension, however, delivers pleasant ride quality. It’s deliberate in quick maneuvers, but the electric power steering conveys very little of that tactile information to the driver.
Conclusion
The seventh-generation of Toyota’s Camry is still a good value for sedan shoppers because of Toyota’s traditional strengths of build quality, reliability, and resale value at trade-in. Camry is number one for a reason and delivers with a competent, quiet, and comfortable ride. For the average family, the XSE will deliver a satisfying commute. For a local business, the new Camry would be a good company car. The XSE trim does dial up excitement for those seeking a ride that’s a little higher on the fun-to-drive meter than the other Camry trim levels.

Letter From The UK: Headed For The Rocks

Letter From The UK: Headed For The Rocks

Is The Great British Car Industry Heading For The Rocks?
A few weeks ago, the Conservative Government of the UK called a General Election in the belief they would gain a strong majority in the UK Parliament ahead of the Brexit negotiations. At the time this seemed very likely. The trouble is, they went on to run the most disastrous election campaign this country has ever seen. Overall, they are now in a much worse position to govern than before and that includes their dealings with the EU machine.
Now, with a much weaker hand to play, the British Prime Minister, Teresa May, has flown off to Brussels to give a speech to European Union leaders about one of the consequences of Britain leaving the EU. In this case, it is about EU citizens who live and work in the UK and their British counterparts who do the same in Europe.
All At Sea
It is a storm in a teacup. No reasonable government would kick out working citizens at a stroke but it does highlight something else. British agriculture has become use to a steady flow of migrant or itinerant workers from abroad who seasonally pick produce that can’t be garnered by automation.
The result of this is that the stream of such workers is starting to dry up because they don’t know where they stand. The thing is neither does anyone else. This has repercussions for our motor industry. With the possible exception (so I hear) of the current American administration, our leaders here don’t seem to have a clue what to do. Their solution so far is to keep bailing out the sinking ship of State in the hope that someone will bring along a bigger bucket.
A recent BBC News article reads: “David Cameron, his Chancellor George Osborne and many other senior figures who wanted to stay in the EU predicted an immediate economic crisis if the UK voted to leave. House prices would fall, there would be a recession with a big rise in unemployment – and an emergency Budget would be needed to bring in the large cuts in spending that would be needed.”
The Car Industry
The car sales industry in the UK and Europe is huge and Britain imports many cars from Europe and similarly exports out our brands. As the UK car industry is almost entirely foreign owned the worry is that the owners, come Brexit time in 2019, will jump ship fearing trade tariffs will make their UK production uneconomic. That would be a disaster for Great Britain. Further, UK car plants also depend heavily on the free movement of components to and from the continent.
The British Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders are on record as saying that any new relationship with the EU would need to address tariff and non-tariff barriers, plus regulatory and labor issues, all of which “will take time to negotiate.” In short, they don’t think a deal can be sorted out in the next two years and that some form of interim arrangement must be implemented. This could mean, for example, that the UK stay in the single market and customs union until a new, overarching relationship between the two sides is brokered.
McLaren employees celebrate the 10,000th car from the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, England in December 2016. Photo: McLaren Automotive Limited.

Live In Hope Not Expectation
When asked, the SMMT’s chief executive said it was time to be pragmatic. He went on: “we accept that we are leaving the European Union and we share the desire for that departure to be a success. But our biggest fear is that, in two year’s time, we fall off a cliff edge – no deal outside the single market and customs union and trading on inferior World Trade Organization terms. This would undermine our competitiveness and our ability to attract the investment that is critical to future growth.”
In the typically aggressive manner the British have come to expect from EU negotiators over Brexit, their chief negotiator has said there can be no concessions. This is unhelpful. In general, the attitude of the big cheeses who run the European Union is like that of a child who can’t have its own way. They throw their toys out of the pram. This is not conducive to good business and the car makers, being intelligent and sentient beings and not politicians, know this. And they are worried.
The damage to the British car industry could be immense. There must be a solution and, because the car makers have to think long-term, there has to be one soon. Fortunately living in hope is a British trait. We don’t have any other choice.

2018 Dodge Durango: SRT Flavor With Every Bite

2018 Dodge Durango: SRT Flavor With Every Bite

Earlier this year, at the Chicago Auto Show, Dodge revealed the 2018 Durango SRT, effectively saying their answer to the world’s problems is to throw more horsepower at the situation. Waxing poetics aside, the strategy seems effective enough with Dodge taking the crown for the most powerful three-row SUV on the market today.
Dodge recently revealed the 2018 Durango R/T which has similar characteristics as its older brother.
Striking DNA
The Durango SRT is easily noticeable by its aggressive, yet functional hood which features a center air inlet duct flanked by heat extractors. The front lower valence houses a new cold-air duct system and LED fog lamps – these things are done in the name of style and performance, and R/T buyers will have this exact same setup on their Durango.
Engine choices include the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 rated at 295 horsepower, the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 rated at 360 horsepower, and the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 rated at 475 horsepower. Regardless of which trim level buyers opt for in the Durango, Dodge is singing the hymns of power and performance. The automaker is keen to point out how buyers can get “SRT attitude” in every Durango powertrain.
“Performance is more than stats,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “At Dodge performance is an attitude that permeates through everything we do.”
Photo: FCA US LLC.
Special Treatments
The Durango R/T is one of only two models available in a B5 Blue exterior color (late availability); Durango SRT being the other. Additional standard goodies for the R/T include Front Park Assist and a BeatsAudio system complete with a subwoofer and 506-watt amplifier. All 2018 Durango models come with a backup camera, a new sport steering wheel, and electronic T-shifter with an Auto Stick selector gate. Customers can also opt for the available hand wrapped instrument panel with accent stitching.
“We are strengthening the brand’s promise to deliver performance vehicles with world-class power, technology, and standout styling our customers have come to expect,” Kuniskis added.
Dealers are taking orders for the 2018 Durango with an anticipated arrival sometime in the third quarter. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicles arriving at dealers. For the current model year, Durango trim levels include the SXT, SXT Plus, GT, Citadel, and R/T.

The 2018 BMW X3 builds on previous successes

The 2018 BMW X3 builds on previous successes The ’18 BMW X3 is a high-volume crossover that aims to please a wider range of buyers

It’s easy to think of the BMW X3 as a vehicle for those desiring the practicality of a Subaru Forester, but want on-road performance and a splash of character on the inside. They may be cross-shopping the Audi’s Q5 or Merc’s GLC, or the best offered by the Japanese—it gets hard for BMW at this point. Why? The market is flooded, and automakers are struggling to find groundbreaking improvements. The headliners here are that it comes with a 2-inch trailer hitch and 60 happens in 4.6 seconds.
Driving enthusiasts want wagons, but enthusiasts don’t drive X3s
The take rate on the X3 is huge compared to the similarly equipped 3 series touring. Why is this? BMW is reacting strongly to the demand for their compact Sports Activity Vehicles. And as demand has grown, so has the options list and range of powertrains. The 3er wagon, which enjoyed its heyday in the US as the E46 (1998-2006) now enjoys sales figures similar to those of the unconventional and the grotesque 3er GranTurismo.
An automatic is the only transmission offered in the 3er wagon due to the cost of designing a federalized low-volume wagon with a stick. This has become the death knell for the 3er touring. Manufacturers are interested in using crossovers to fund halo cars with manual transmissions like the Audi R8, but it’s clear that Instagram isn’t a fan of practical cars with a low center of gravity, so wagons are out across the board.
The internally-named G01 BMW X3 is a clear sign of progression and now offers X-drive as standard
The BMW X3 was first sold stateside as a lifted box riding on a modified 3 series platform—only 10% smaller than the X5, the X3 should have been the premium crossover that thousands were looking for, but it wasn’t. BMW jumped the gun so hard on the first round of entry-level SUVs that the cars were slammed by the motoring press for resembling a cold stick of butter. There’s potential for fun, but the car came with a dour interior, a diesel that was suspected of cheating emissions, and the struggle of being in the X5’s shadow, size-wise. The interior of the 2018 can be had with leather seats, SensaTec where there might have been gray plastic beforehand, and a large suite of tech–including accident prediction. the options list has grown, NVH is tamed, the car is safer and faster. What’s not to like?
The second-generation sold so well, BMW hands out a trailer hitch and 19″ of fording capability, oh and more power.
The changes are relatively conservative (aesthetic refresh, a standard 8-speed auto, more power, silver colored cladding/faux skidplates), but BMW is now offering a couple of accessories to entice its market, but offers no details on towing capacities or pricing for this socially acceptable tiny van, which is due to show up at BMW’s floodgates this November. All of this is fine, because the top-of-the-range M40i BMW X3 gets to 60 in 4.6 seconds and comes with the following features that are particularly relevant to those needing a bit of extra clearance for their active lifestyles:
4-pot calipers up front
available 21-inch wheels
launch control
For the rest of us, the 2-liter will have to do. For more information, check out the press release below.
Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 26, 2017 10:00 am EDT / 7:00 am PDT… The all-new 2018 BMW X3 was unveiled today at BMW Plant Spartanburg, SC, where it will be produced alongside the BMW X4, BMW X5, and BMW X6. BMW is at home in Spartanburg, SC producing 411,171 BMW X models last year, making it the largest BMW Group’s global production facility with approximately 70 percent of the vehicles exported to 140 markets worldwide, thereby making BMW the largest vehicle exporter in the U.S. by value. BMW Plant Spartanburg has a deep level of localization, and provides and supports nearly 70,000 jobs in the U.S. In 2003, the BMW X3 was the car that launched the premium compact SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) segment. Since then, BMW has recorded more than 1.5 million vehicles worldwide and 378,803 in the US alone. Today, the all-new BMW X3 is set to write the next chapter in this success story with a more striking, dynamic design language, powerful yet efficient drive systems with a luxurious appeal. Like all members of the successful X family, it blends standout-driving qualities on any terrain with unrestricted everyday usability.
The all-new 2018 BMW X3 will be available at certified BMW Centers this November with pricing to be announced closer to market launch.
The exterior design with new distinctive looks. The all-new BMW X3 elevates the already boldly dynamic design language of its predecessor. The third generation of the pioneering premium compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) treads a familiar BMW X family path in combining rugged off-road looks with generous presence. The exterior dimensions of the all-new BMW X3 may be largely unchanged, however, the wheelbase has been extended by 2.2-inches and its long hood, extremely short front overhang with finely balanced proportions, emphasize the perfect 50:50 weight distribution between the front and rear axle.
For the first time on a BMW X model, the front fascia features a muscular “three-dimensional” kidney grille and fog lights featuring a hexagonal design, underlining the confident character of the all-new BMW X3. Moving to the rear, the tail light housings whose three-dimensional look with the optional Adaptive LED and Icon Adaptive Full LED Headlights, give them considerable visual impact. A downward-sloping roof spoiler and twin exhaust tailpipes add to the muscular appearance.
First ever factory-installed trailer hitch available in a BMW SAV.The all-new BMW X3 will be the first BMW SAV in the US to feature a factory-installed trailer hitch. The new 2” receiver will enable customers to use a broad range of BMW Accessories including tongues, drop tongues, towing balls, a step to help access roof mounted accessories and several varieties of bike racks.
Standard xLine design, available Luxury Package. The standard xLine design emphasizes the robustness of the Sports Activity Vehicle and stands out with numerous trim elements in Satin aluminum, Silver matte, and 18-inch Y-Spoke wheels with All-season Run Flat Tires (19-inch V-Spoke wheels with All-season Run Flat Tires are available as an upgrade option). On the interior, the driver and front passenger are welcomed by standard Sport Seats with power adjustable side bolsters, and an Anthracite headliner.
The optional Luxury Package, available for the first time in the X3 model range, emphasizes the SAV’s elegant character with features such as chrome kidney grille bars and two-tone front & rear bumper trim finishers on the exterior and a SensaTec upholstered dashboard on the interior.
M Sport Package. The M Sport Package focuses its attentions on the dynamic prowess of the all-new BMW X3 with the M Aerodynamic kit (front apron with larger air intakes, side skirt trim, and a diffusor-style rear apron). Also included are Shadowline exterior trim and 19-inch M Double-Spoke Wheels with All-season Run Flat Tires or Performance Run Flat Tires. For customers seeking the most dynamic BMW X3, M Double-Spoke 20-inch Wheels with Mixed Performance Run Flat Tires are available as an upgrade option. The interior includes a new M Sport leather steering wheel, M door sill finishers and a SensaTec upholstered dashboard.
Interior and equipment: improved material quality and ergonomics. The interior of the all-new BMW X3 follows BMW tradition with its driver-focused and ergonomically optimized cockpit layout and carries over many aspects of the car’s exterior design. For instance, hexagonal forms and precise, sloping edges also play a central role in the interior. The interior as a whole displays exceptional material quality, fit, and finish, with carefully thought ergonomics. One example here is the storage concept, which offers more storage space than ever before and ensures it is easier to access.
The all-new BMW X3 comes standard with several new, comfort enhancing features not offered on its predecessor. These include 3-zone automatic climate control, which adds separate temperature controls for the rear compartment to those for the driver and front passenger. To enhance rear compartment comfort, the angle of the standard 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat backrests can be adjusted individually and through various stages thanks to the standard cargo function. This feature also allows the backrests to be released remotely from the load compartment, which expands the standard load capacity of 28.7 ft3 to 62.7 ft3. Newly available convenient functions include front ventilated seats for driver and front passenger to maximize comfort on warm days. Customers can also give the interior a roomier feel with the 9.8-inch longer panoramic glass moonroof.
Contour lighting above the trim strip in the instrument panel is included with the available Extended Ambient Lighting, which directs a soft stream of light downwards from below the accent strip, lights the interior in a distinctive and relaxing ambience. At night, the iDrive display appears to be floating above the instrument panel. Customers can choose from six color tones.
Enhanced active prowess and improved comfort over all terrain. The dynamic handling qualities of the all-new BMW X3 are directly linked to its ideal 50:50 weight distribution, its meticulously honed chassis and xDrive, BMW’s Intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which made its debut in 2003 when the first generation of the BMW X3 originally launched. Not only has the system been offering superior grip on slippery surfaces ever since, it has had a beneficial effect on driving dynamics too. This system is networked with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) allowing the power split between all four wheels to be constantly varied, providing the handling characteristics for which BMW is renowned.
The new Driving Dynamics Control toggle switch now also offers Adaptive Mode when the vehicle is equipped with Dynamic Damper Control in addition to configurations such as, ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ (M40i model only) modes.
Chassis dynamics: reduced mass and improved axle kinematics. The 3rd generation of the BMW X3 continues to rely on its winning formula of a double-joint spring strut front axle and a five-link rear set-up at the rear. At the same time, this refreshingly engaging Sports Activity Vehicle delivers an even sportier driving experience than its predecessor without compromising on ride comfort. The engineers have succeeded in reducing a considerable amount in unsprung mass by fitting aluminum swivel bearings and lighter tubular anti-roll bars as well as optimizing wheel location at the front. Handling dynamics, straight-line stability and steering feel have all benefited from the improved axle kinematics and the Electric Power Steering system with Servotronic.
In an effort to improve handling dynamics, the rear bias of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system has been increased. Intelligent AWD management constantly adjusts the torque bias as the driving situation demands ensuring optimum driving dynamics.
In its basic specification, the all-new BMW X3 comes with 18-inch light-alloy wheels while wheels up to 21 inches in diameter are available depending on the equipment and engine variant. The powerful braking system features lightweight brakes offering optimized performance as well as an Electric Parking Brake. A broad array of electronic control systems help the driver maximize safety at all times. These systems include: Driving Stability Control (DSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Start-Off Assistant, Performance Control, and Hill Descent Control (HDC).

Customers can use the Amazon Echo’s Alexa voice service to check the fuel level of their new X3, for instance, lock the vehicle or activate the ventilation function, all by voice control from the comfort of their home.
With BMW Connected, being on-time has never been simpler. Machine learning made possible by the Open Mobility Cloud allows BMW Connected to learn your routines and suggest the optimal time to leave for an appointment. Location based services and real time traffic information help optimize your journey even before entering the vehicle. When equipped with Navigation Professional, the Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information can continue to optimize your routing options. Car-to-car communication is now also employed within the inter-connected BMW fleet to provide advance warning of hazardous traffic situations. Information on any detected hazards presented by an accident, a broken-down vehicle, dense fog, heavy rain or black ice, for example, is also relayed to the BMW backend from where it is imported into the navigation system of both the driver’s car and other vehicles BMWs in the vicinity .
Intelligent Emergency Call with extended functionality. The standard built-in SIM card also allows drivers of the all-new BMW X3 to use Intelligent Emergency Call with automatic locating and accident severity detection. With the new BMW Teleservice Accident Assistance, the vehicle now also detects low-speed collisions below the threshold for airbag deployment. The driver receives a message in the iDrive display offering to contact the BMW Accident Assistance service directly. A push of a button is all it takes to obtain professional support from the BMW Accident Assistance team, who can also put the customer in touch with a BMW Service Partner if necessary.
Detecting accidents before they happen. The standard pre-crash accident detection system Active Protection enhances passive safety by detecting potential accident situations as they arise. If a collision risk is detected, the system automatically triggers a variety of occupant protection measures. The driver’s and front passenger’s belt tensioners are activated, and the windows and Panoramic moonroof are closed. Following a collision, Active Protection automatically brings the vehicle to a standstill. The Frontal Collision Warning function detects an imminent risk of collision with preceding vehicles, and prepares the vehicle systems for a possible impact from vehicles behind.
Parking with ease: ParkNow and On-Street Parking Information. The ParkNow service, available in iDrive, allows parking spaces at the roadside and in parking garages to be easily located, booked and paid for without the need for cash. This can greatly shorten the time taken to find a free space. In-car integration of ParkNow is initially available in select cities nationwide. Visit www.park-now.com for details.
First launched with the BMW 5 Series, the new On-Street Parking Information (OSPI) service available in select cities helps alleviate the problem of vehicles searching for parking spaces – which accounts for a large part of traffic congestion in city centers. OSPI works in a similar way to the Advanced Real Time Traffic Information System, using historical and current data to draw conclusions regarding the availability of on-street parking spaces in specific zones or in a particular part of town. The probability of on street parking availability is shown on the Navigation Professional map, allowing the driver to minimize the need to continually circle the block in search of a spot.
The options list likewise includes a WiFi hotspot offering a high-speed internet connection (LTE) for up to ten mobile devices. Apple CarPlay is also available and can be used wirelessly in the all-new BMW X3. The driver can seamlessly switch between BMW and Apple CarPlay via the iDrive controller or touchscreen interface if equipped.

Automotive Research Firm Leveraging Anti-Theft Background For Safer Autonomous Cars

Automotive Research Firm Leveraging Anti-Theft Background For Safer Autonomous Cars

Last month, we were part of AutoSens Detroit at the M1 Concourse, a conference dedicated to vehicle perception technology and autonomous driving. It’s one of the best resources on automated vehicles from a design, technology, legal, and consumer standpoint. Through AutoSens, it’s easy to network with any number of figures in the world of autonomous driving, all of whom are trying to bring this promising world to light.
Evaluation Strategy
While attending the events at the M1 Concourse, we were intrigued during Tim Dawkins’ presentation about the importance of autonomous vehicle testing and how the parameters for those tests need to be defined. Dawkins, an Autonomous Car Specialist with SBD Automotive, was speaking about the company’s perspective regarding the challenges of testing a fully autonomous vehicle.
“Conventional safety systems – everything from ABS to emergency braking – are currently validated using a structured testing program,” he explained. “There are design verification procedures where the car is subjected to a number of test cases, and if it passes those test cases, it is generally deemed good enough to go on the road.”
The tests are, as the name suggests, structured, with emphasis on one feature in a specific set of conditions. With autonomous driving, however, validation testing to that degree might not be the most ideal approach. Dawkins believes the industry will need to constantly evaluate the current testing strategy to ensure autonomous technology can deliver its promised benefits.
“It is very difficult to develop a test case that would encompass every variable and scenario,” he said. “Leaders in the field are going to have to rethink their testing strategy.”
Innovation In Tow
The AutoSens environment allows for concerns like these to be raised without fear or restriction. After a presentation, a question and answer session transpires so if necessary, a particular point or topic can be clarified or expanded upon. Through AutoSens, we were introduced to many forward-thinking companies working on automated driving, SBD Automotive among them.
SBD is best described as an independent research and consulting firm, with a particular interest in automated vehicles and vehicle security. The company works with the likes of OEMs, top suppliers, and even entities from adjacent industries like finance or insurance. Core areas of focus include market and competitive intelligence, strategic support such as M&A due diligence, and a range of technical consulting like penetration testing, consumer focus groups, and benchmarking. Dawkins shares how he has spent countless hours doing the latter, tearing apart vehicles to examine how they are constructed. SBD even meets with figures from other industries looking at getting into autonomous driving, helping them identify key opportunities and objectives.
“We do a lot of bespoke consulting,” Dawkins said. “It’s quite varied.”
SBD automotive provides technical and strategic support to businesses across the automotive industry.
Proactive Protection
In 1997, Secured By Design (SBD) Automotive was formed by David Bell, David McClure, and Gareth Jones. The transition to autonomous driving and its need for increased security seems natural, given SBD’s history and area of expertise. It was twenty years ago, well before our conversations at AutoSens about cars that drive themselves, where SDB Automotive made an impact.
“Back in the late 1990s in Europe, there was a huge problem with vehicle theft, enabled in part by the lack of security devices being fitted to vehicles at the time,” Dawkins explained. “SBD – back then Secured by Design – started out helping some of the worst affected OEMs secure their new vehicle platforms against car theft.”
After interviewing convicted car thieves and analyzing recovered vehicles, SBD developed advanced security measures that now protect everyday drivers. In 1999, SBD partnered with Lexus to develop and implement a series of class-leading anti-theft features on the new IS 200. The project proved so successful, the new Lexus was deemed the “Most Secure Car in the UK” and earned high marks from WhatCar?, an automotive advice publication operated by the Haymarket Media Group. That same year, SBD formed a telematics division to help manufacturers navigate an increasingly mobile world, and by 2005, the company was addressing electronic threats and engineering appropriate countermeasures.
“We’ve continued to innovate and work with our clients to secure vehicles against increasingly advanced theft methods,” Dawkins said. “We work closely with law enforcement to understand the latest threats from organized criminal groups and help OEMs implement effective countermeasures.”

One Eye Open
With the world of autonomous driving comes a range of connected systems and entities. Cars are talking to each other, communicating with infrastructure, and mobile devices, and dozens of other things in the name of efficiency and safety. To the average consumer, this might be a little unnerving. Sure, there is always a fear of the technology not working or breaking down, but another underlying fear is what happens if someone tries to get in? Could a hacker potentially access my car and gain all my information? Or worse, could they gain control with me inside, leaving me completely helpless? Dawkins, who first started with SBD’s Secure Car team and worked on a number of anti-theft technologies, understands the concern.
“The autonomous car presents the potential for a range of new attack vectors, with potentially grave consequences if not addressed,” he said. “Whether through connectivity or tampering with the vehicle’s sensors, we believe cybersecurity is a vital consideration of autonomy, especially if OEMs are to ensure their vehicles are safe from those with malicious intent.”
SBD will leverage their twenty years of experience protecting consumers as the autonomous world gradually becomes a reality. Another unique advantage is the incremental and calculated nature at which SBD views autonomous driving, despite the rapid advancement in technology. It is rather refreshing, especially if consumers have concerns about hacking and security. SBD is very clear that while there are many promising things about automated driving, more work is needed. The company’s initiatives have evolved into a global team focused on active safety lead by Dr. Alain Dunoyer, and any recommendations are based upon a thorough knowledge of the technology.
“This ensures our recommendations are actionable and relate to the products or strategic goals of our clients,” Dawkins said.
2020 seems a critical time frame for the automotive industry. 30 million cars are expected to be sold with embedded connectivity by then and more than twenty manufacturers have pinned 2020 as a target to offer vehicles with higher levels of automation. SDB notes that by 2020, cyber-attacks are expected to expose the automotive industry to $70 billion of liability.

Concern & Collaboration
As an authority figure for this publication, I want us to cover as much about autonomous driving as possible. There are times I readily embrace driverless cars; other times I am not so sure. There are challenges waiting to be addressed; there will be bugs and kinks in the system to work out. Our encouragement to readers and people we meet is to keep an open mind – it’s okay to be hopeful – the individuals working on this technology are brilliant. That does not mean, however, we suggest giving a driverless car blind faith. It’s a fine line between being diligent about researching the facts and remaining cautiously optimistic.
“I am personally very conservative in my estimates for automated driving,” Dawkins said. “Many of the leaders in this space have made a range of headline commitments to autonomous driving, but the industry still has a tremendous number of hurdles to overcome if those deadlines are to be met. While the technologies are progressing rapidly, there are plenty of questions around liability, regulation, type approval, and infrastructure which are a long way from being resolved.”
For SDB and the numerous other engineers, researchers, and companies at AutoSens, open dialogue is the best solution. When it comes to addressing the challenges of automated driving and easing the concerns of the public, it may indeed be the best tool in the box.
“Collaboration between stakeholders and other industries will be essential to overcoming many of these roadblocks – and we like to think of ourselves as well placed to enable this progression and provide independent and holistic insights as OEMs try to navigate the challenges,” Dawkins added.

2018 Extended-Length Lincoln Navigator: When Huge Isn’t Big Enough

2018 Extended-Length Lincoln Navigator: When Huge Isn’t Big Enough

In the neo-Edwardian age we are all descending into, Daisy Buchanan 2.0 will probably be driving a 2018 Extended-Length Lincoln Navigator when she runs over a poor person. Calling this thing “big” is like calling the USS Shenandoah “big.” It greatly downplays its magnitude.
Even though Lincoln touts the size of their new Extended-Length Lincoln Navigator (ELLN? EL2N?) they have yet to give out any specs on the thing. They do mention it is nearly a foot longer than the regular model, which is already 207 inches – more than 17 feet – long.
Spacious & Accommodating
The Extended-Length features increased cargo capacity (which kind of follows) with a specially designed below-floor storage compartment behind the third row. And yes, all that is very nice and handy, but Lincoln really let’s you know what this luxo-barge is all about: It separates you from “the little people.”
When they say it’s “Lincoln’s longest, most luxurious and spacious SUV,” they ain’t kidding. The second-row door is larger, so you can get in and out with greater ease. There’s an extra 15 cubic feet of storage behind the third row of seats, so that way, and Lincoln actually says this: “every passenger enjoys a comfortable ride, bags still fit, and bulky cargo isn’t a hassle.” See? No need to interact with your abundant luggage, that’s for the servants. You can just get in, sit down, and enjoy the ride.
Lincoln also mentions the new big boy comes standard with signature personalized customer service, including Pickup and Delivery. In other words, when it comes time to service the beast, no need to worry sir, oh no. A Lincoln Service Valet comes and picks up your Lincoln, sir, for any service needed, at any location. In the meantime, you are provided a complimentary Lincoln loaner vehicle, and when the service is completed, your ELLN returns to you freshly washed. Very good sir.

Suburban Safari
From there on out, Lincoln just shovels on the luxury add-ons. With this model, Lincoln has unveiled Destination, “a new Black Label interior theme that celebrates the art of travel.” Now, they didn’t clarify exactly, but I’m pretty safe in saying that their Black Label has no affiliation with the low-cost beer that was once so popular with the Seattle punk rock crowd.
Check this out: “Destination takes its inspiration from vintage luggage, hearkening back to a time when travel was rich with excitement and intrigue.” What? Are you going to drive this through The Veldt on the way to shoot a rhino? Probably not, but the interior makes you think you could, I guess. The Extended-Length also features Mahogany Red Venetian leather with a diamond weave on the seats, and khaya wood laser-etched appliqués that echo the diamond weave pattern.
Desirable Objects
Still not convinced this thing is going all full-on neo-Edwardian? Then check this: The new, enormous Navigator comes in two other Lincoln Black Label interior themes, Chalet and Yacht Club. Chalet and Yacht Club! Insert appropriate Nikolai Bukharin quote here.
But just a moment Ivanovich, there are even more profligate indicators of the bourgeoisie nature of the 2018 Lincoln Extended-Length Navigator. The big Lincoln comes with Perfect Position Seats and Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. Note that is Pedestrian Detection and not Pedestrian Avoidance. Lincoln says the system uses radar and cameras to provide a collision warning to the driver, which is pretty standard these days. If you do not respond in time, the big Lincoln can automatically apply the brakes for you. Further, the system is designed to reduce the severity of and, potentially, eliminate frontal collisions, including those involving pedestrians. There is no word if there’s a secret Myrtle Wilson detection system, but there could be.

More Everything Please
If you are a Lincoln Black Label member, you receive lifetime complimentary car washes, and a “complimentary culinary experience – with enhancements such as a champagne or wine toast, appetizers, and a personalized menu.” Seriously. Lincoln just throws that in there. No mention on when or where or what’s on the menu. I guess it’s just one of those things that one knows, ya’know?
That Black Label membership also qualifies you for the Avis President’s Club, which is an exclusive, invitation-only program, of course, that includes such perks as complimentary rentals in select locations and premiere savings. Use of a Dogs-Body is also included . . . okay, okay, I’m kidding about that last part, but you know it’s probably just around the corner.
And so, there it is: The 2018 Extended-Length Lincoln Navigator. Probably the biggest, heaviest, most ostentatious, and brazen beast on wheels you can get without commissioning something from the ghosts of Figoni et Falaschi. So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
Tony Borroz has spent his entire life racing antique and sports cars. He means well, even if he has a bias towards lighter, agile cars rather than big engine muscle cars or family sedans.
