Supercar Superbuild Features Mercedes-AMG, Rolls Royce, Jaguar & Others In Season Two Supercar Superbuild kicks off its second season this Sunday (January 22nd) on the Smithsonian Channel. The cameras go behind the scenes, revealing the high-stakes gambles, engineering challenges, impossible deadlines, clandestine meetings, and years of sacrifice designers and craftspeople face to bring the world’s most incredible vehicles to life. Those who enjoy cars and appreciate history will definitely be fascinated by Supercar Superbuild.
In-Depth Look
The second season will expose viewers to Alfa Romeo, Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Porsche, and Audi, among others. This season, those and other individual automakers and their cars are examined thoroughly. From the mechanical specifications and design concepts, to the manufacturing and technology aspects, nothing is left untouched. Cars like the Rolls Royce Wraith, a near $300,000 luxury machine, are featured in full detail. Unique vehicle assembly characteristics are revealed, like how it takes nearly a football field worth of aluminum welds for an Audi R8’s frame.
The archival footage and historical information is one of the most enjoyable parts of the show, and viewers will see plenty of both this season. Another highlight is how the cameras go inside the assembly plants to see firsthand where the action happens. Viewers meet the executives, artisans, designers, and engineers responsible for getting these unique cars from dream to reality.

Great Eight
The first of eight episodes this season details how Mercedes-AMG is taking on their rivals in the performance arena. Viewers see the brand’s extensive history, hear from Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG Chairman, and go inside the Sindelfingen factory in Germany, the largest Mercedes-Benz facility in the world. Later in the season, the cameras head to the Motor City, where the Chevy Camaro is a beloved fixture among American muscle cars; the final episode of the season tells the story of the world’s first “blue-collar sports car.”
Supercar Superbuild premieres Sunday, January 21st at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the Smithsonian Channel. Below is a preview of Sunday’s episode. The snippet shows how Mercedes-AMG technicians build each engine by hand.

Hyundai Velostar Models Headed To Forza Motorsport 7 Hyundai revealed its all-new 2019 Veloster Turbo and the Veloster’s high performance counterpart, the Veloster N, at the North American International Auto Show. As part of that debut, Hyundai also announced both cars will join the list of vehicles in Forza Motorsport 7 for Xbox and Windows 10. This is a rather interesting choice for Forza. They have done stuff like this is the past, including “First in Forza” debuts like the McLaren P1, Ferrari La Ferrari, Ford GT, Lamborghini Centenario, and Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
Extensive History
Okay, full disclosure here: I actually worked for Microsoft Game Studios, the parent company of Turn 10 Motorsports, designers of Forza Motorsports. I worked primarily as a content expert but also as a test driver due to my experience with a variety of cars, and the fact I had experience with real simulators (in my case, full motion, six-axis flight simulators custom built by the likes of Raytheon and Rediffusion). I will gleefully admit my biases up front: When it comes to game consoles, Forza Motorsports is the driving sim to get, everything else is a hacked up arcade game.
Coming To Fruition
But what makes Hyundai’s Veloster Turbo and Veloster N worthy of being “First in Forza?” I bet it was money more than anything else. I bet Hyundai and Microsoft sat down, and Hyundai said, “please put the Veloster Turbo and Veloster N in your upcoming version of Forza. Oh and we’ll give you a bajillion dollars.”
Not that the Veloster Turbo and Veloster N aren’t worth discussing, it’s just best not to confuse them with rides like La Ferraris and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Curiously, the Veloster Turbo and Veloster N will not arrive in showrooms until later this year, but they are already available as free downloadable content for players to virtually thrash around.

Up Close & Personal
Forza players will be able to realize the unique design of the 2019 Veloster Turbo and Veloster N thanks to the Forzavista feature. This, I’m assuming, is 7’s version of the old AutoVista feature, where you could get up close and personal with a given car, open the hood, the doors, and virtually sit down in the driver’s seat – stuff like that. Hyundai says each car is rendered in exacting detail, and users can explore those details, from the odd asymmetric body style, to the cockpit layout and engine bay. And I know this is not marketing department hyperbole.
Sweating The Small Stuff
The Forza team goes into excruciating levels of production specificity with this stuff. For run of the mill cars such as the Veloster Turbo and Veloster N, we would routinely shoot hundreds of pictures of everything; door handles, doors closed, doors one-third open, doors two-thirds open, doors all the way open, door hinges, door seals, door strike plates, and that was just the doors. That same thing happened for stuff like hoods, engine details, and buttons on the dash in various positions. We’d even put newer cars up on racks to get shots of the underside: the exhaust system, suspension bits, and braking components. That way the cars would look very accurate when you barrel roll them into a sand trap. For instance.
And even though that amount of detail work was most likely put into the digital versions of the Veloster Turbo and Veloster N, they weren’t even in the same ball park as the amount of detail we’d have to go into when photographing and documenting stuff like ’57 Ferrari Testa Rosas and ’59 Aston Martin DBR1s.

Fun Times
And of course, since the Veloster twins are in the digital world, you can have fun by deeply personalizing them; you can even play with options to make your 2019 Velosters fire-breathing beasts. New wheels, heavy powertrain and suspension upgrades, unique paint schemes and racing liveries; all there for your digital driving pleasure. This will be fun to play around with . . . once I get a new Xbox One X and driving sim set up.
That should be happening as soon as I convince management here to give me some time off.

New Rewards Reservation Program To Include 2019 Infiniti QX50 The 2019 Infiniti QX50, sure to be a hit with the soccer-mom brigades across suburbia, is now part of a new program that gives customers a chance to reserve the vehicle before it officially lands. In addition to reserving your QX50 for the not at all unreasonable starting sum of $36,550, the program offers luxury gifts. This reservation system must be working, since more than 4,000 people have already signed up?
So besides tech, audio, and home tchotchkes that Inifniti calls “luxury rewards,” what does your 36 large get you? Well, about all the things people demand these days.
Platform & Styling
The 2019 QX50 is built on an all-new platform that sets standards for refinement, rigidity, and interior space in the premium crossover segment. According to Infiniti that is. Of course, that term “rigidity” tells any serious off-roader the QX50 is not to be taken to Moab or anything like that. The QX50 is built for shopping mall parking lots, private school parking lots, beauty salon parking lots, and well, you get the idea.
The exterior styling is said to be “bold” and convey Infiniti’s “Powerful Elegance” design language to the crossover segment. Okay, sure, whatever. For that market segment though, the QX50 does bring lots of interior space, quality materials, and high levels of craftsmanship to the party.

Power & Performance
The QX50 is motivated through the suburbs via a VC-Turbo engine. VC in this case stands for variable compression, and indeed this is the world’s first production-ready variable compression ratio engine, transforming on demand just how hard your air/fuel mixture is squished. The 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine adjusts its compression ratio so power and efficiency is optimized. The 2.0-liter VC-Turbo combines the power of a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with the torque and efficiency of a 3.5-liter V6. Nice! But let’s take it out of this “crossover” and put it in a sports car, shall we Nissan?
And oh yeah, of course, the 2019 QX50 offers a buffet of technologies to make your driving experience all the easier. This raft of high-tech stuff includes the available ProPILOT Assist and the first front-wheel drive application of Direct Adaptive Steering, now in its fourth-generation. Both of these techno-goodies are key components in Infiniti’s vision for driver assistance tech that allows you, as the driver, to retain ultimate control over your vehicle.

Aston Martin Valkyrie Engine: Your Greatest Dream Or Worst Nightmare The new Aston Martin Valkyrie engine is a work of scientific art. 
The redline is through the roof and the horsepower ratings are off the charts.
Developed in conjunction with Cosworth using proven F1 materials and methods.
Look, I don’t know what kind of drugs the engine department at Aston Martin is on, but I think they’re close to overdosing in the most positive way possible. Here we have the new V12 for the upcoming, Adrian Newey-designed Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar, and it’s just mind-boggling.
The specs are stratospheric as is the redline.
And it sounds like Eddie Van Halen playing around with a chainsaw.
Fully-Stressed & Completely Insane
We still don’t know much about the chassis or aero specs for the Valkyrie, but you could probably put this plant in an AMC Pacer and wax a Porsche 911. Well, you’d have to stuff it into the “trunk,” since this Valkyrie V12 engine (mid-engine by the way) is a “fully stressed” member of the chassis. This has been standard racing practice since the first Cosworth DFV, but rarely has it been seen in a road-going car. The only one that springs to mind is the V12 Ferrari put into the F50.
Like the F50, the Valkyrie will have its V12 bolted directly to the carbon fiber tub. This makes perfect sense from a packaging and performance standpoint. From an everyday usability standpoint, it’s kinda iffy. All the vibrations, buzzes, shudders, and such are transmitted directly to the part of the car you’re sitting on and, therefore, right into your spine.
For a lot of people, this was seen as a huge flaw. For people like me (and I’m guessing people like Adrian Newey and the nut-jobs that made the F50) this is an added bonus. But I’ll keep any further discussions on this between me and my team of therapists.

If Looks Could Kill
Anyway, that’s why this V12 looks rather strange. The cam covers, for example, have these odd buttresses and such, because that’s how the front of the engine bolts to the tub. The rear also has lots of odd features, but here we have an incomplete story. This is where the Valkyrie’s mill connects to the hybrid drive system/transaxle.
Yes, it’s a hybrid.
Yes, we can makes some jokes here about Toyota’s Prius.
Even though the engine is a fully-stressed chassis member, that means adding more weight to support the loads. The whole thing weighs just 206kg, or around 420 lbs. Kinda heavy, but not all that bad. It’s a narrow angle engine too, with a 65 degree angle between the banks. Since Newey is supremely aero-oriented, that leaves a designer with much more room under the car and around the engine so the ground effects tunnels can be that much larger.

Power Figures: Off The Charts
Even though the thing is naturally-aspirated, the 6.5-liter V12 still cranks out a spectacular 1,000 bhp according to Aston Martin. That’s a very high and specific output: 153.8 bhp-per-liter. Also 6.5-liters is a pretty big displacement, which means its redline of 11,100 rpm is very notable. The pistons on a 6.5-liter plant are the size of your fist, so getting them moving in one direction, stopping them, then having them move in the opposite direction at high engine speeds is not easy.
Peak torque is just as inspiring with 546 lb-ft. being the mark you’re going to be concerned with. And keep in mind, these are the horsepower and torque specs for the engine by itself. The engine is just part of the entire powertrain. Added to that will be the power and torque (lots and lots of tasty, tasty torque) of the electric motors and quick-discharge batteries from the hybrid package.
Put another way, these horsepower and torque ratings are just the start for the Valkyrie.

Alexa? Find Me More Steel!
As I mentioned, this was not done all in-house at Gaydon. Cosworth had their say, adding in things like titanium conrods and F1-spec pistons hogged out from solid billet stock. The crankshaft is another fine example of Cosworth’s wizardry. It starts out as a big chunk of solid steel bar stock, then it’s roughed out, then heat treated, finish machined, heat treated again, gear ground, final ground, then superfinished.
Over the course of this process, 80 percent of the original bar stock is reduced to little metal shavings on the shop floor.
And like I said, this is just the engine part of the Valkyrie. Odin only knows what the rest of this beast will be like, but I bet it’ll be a killer.
“To anyone with a drop of petrol in their blood, a high-revving naturally aspirated V12 is the absolute pinnacle,” said Dr. Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group Chief Executive Officer. “Nothing sounds better or encapsulates the emotion and excitement of the internal combustion engine more completely.”

2020 Toyota Corolla Sedan: Still A Corolla, But Better The 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan represents the 12th-generation of Toyota’s small car namesake.
Overall performance and efficiency increases with Toyota’s optional Dynamic Force engine.  
Since its introduction in 1966, over 46 million Toyota Corollas have been sold globally.
The Toyota Corolla is the Coca-Cola of the automotive industry; it is easily recognizable around the globe. The Corolla was able to achieve all this not by being fast or sporty, but by being practical, solidly reliable, and relatively cheap to maintain.
Hot on the heels of the Corolla hatchback is the new 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan. Needless to say, if the Corolla hatchback is a bit too youthful and exuberant for your refined taste, your ride has arrived in the form of the 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan.
Is It True? The Corolla Is Finally Sportier?
The Corolla is a solid and dependable vehicle. It always was and always will be. But chief among my biggest complaints is the sanitized driving experience. Yes, Corollas have learned to be more refined over the years, but Toyota did little to address the tepid driving experience.
Until now.
The 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan is based on the same TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform as the hatchback. This means the new sedan is wider and sits lower to the ground. But if you still think the new car looks eerily similar to the outgoing model, that’s because the new sedan is riding on the same 106.3-inch wheelbase.
Toyota shaved off the hood height by 1.3 inches and lowered the overall body height by 0.8 inches. This also means the new engine sits lower to reduce the center of gravity by 0.39 inches. The new Corolla sedan also benefits from a wider front and rear track, which explains the wider overall stance.
In order to make the 2020 Corolla sedan more engaging and nimble, Toyota shortened the front overhang by 1.3 inches while extending the rear overhang by more than half an inch. All of these changes are necessary to give the 2020 Corolla sedan a sportier and more engaging driving experience. Think of it as a new Corolla hatchback with more room (and a trunk) and you won’t be far off.

Feel The Rush: Dynamic Force Engines
I must admit, “Dynamic Force” is a weird name for an engine. But with D4-S fuel injection (combining direct and secondary port injectors), electronically-controlled VVT-iE (intelligent variable-valve timing), and a 13:1 compression ratio, Toyota’s new 2.0-liter motor churns out 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft. of torque.
However, this engine (known in Toyota-speak as “Dynamic Force M20A-FKS”) is only available in the XSE and SE trim.
The base L, LE, and mid-level XLE is powered by the familiar 1.8-liter 2ZR-FAE four-cylinder, with 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft. of torque. In truth, the smaller displacement motor is enough for conventional urban driving. But it’s hard to resist the allure of the bigger Dynamic Force engine, right?

Transmission Tech: Two Options, One Additional Gear
Both are connected to a 10-speed continuously-variable transmission with a sport mode. Unlike older CVT units, this one is equipped with a physical first gear. You know what this means right? Having a physical gear improves acceleration and response. From this alone, Toyota is serious about injecting some much-needed athleticism into the new 2020 Corolla sedan.
Also worth mentioning is the optional six-speed iMT or intelligent manual transmission as Toyota calls it. The new transmission features an automatic rev-matching downshift control feature that allows you to manually shift gears like pro.

New Legs For A New Ride
Lower, wider, and sportier platform? Check. New 2.0-liter Dynamic Force motor? Check. New CVT with a physical first gear? Check. In order to further improve handling and stability, the 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan is also fitted with (rejoice!) a new multi-link independent rear suspension.
The old torsion beam rear suspension is getting a bit long in the tooth. It may provide better comfort (albeit floaty at times), but it doesn’t respond well to abrupt changes in speed and direction. Toyota addressed this by installing multi-links in the rear for sharper handling without ruining the ride quality. Bravo, Toyota!

I’m not a fan of the Hoover-inspired front air dam on the new 2020 Corolla sedan, but it does give the car a more menacing vibe. The Toyota badge is now affixed in the lower hood opening to differentiate it from the hatchback. Higher trim models also receive a body-color chin spoiler and aero stabilizing fins to further emphasize the gawking front end.
Also new are J-shaped Bi-beam LED headlamps that wrap deeply into the front fenders. The SE and XSE trim receive triple J-shaped LED clearance lamps and LED turn signals as well. The rear features narrow combination taillights and a diffuser.
Combined with newly-sculpted fender tops, more powerful fender flares, and the available 18-inch alloy wheels, the 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan definitely looks more purposeful than the outgoing model.

Better Ergonomics & Interior Comfort
The 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan’s dashboard layout looks familiar. If you think it resembles the larger and more luxurious Toyota Avalon, you’re right. The base L trim gets a seven-inch touchscreen while higher trims receive a bigger eight-inch center touchscreen with the Entune 3.0 multimedia system.
It also comes standard with a 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display in the instrument console. Optional is a seven-inch display that sits between the speedometer and tachometer. If you tick the box for the larger display, you can choose between a traditional analog or modern digital display.
Toyota is also emphasizing how quiet the new Corolla is, since it now contains a one-piece floor silencer pad and additional sound deadening material in the dash and powertrain. The result is a Corolla with luxury car levels of comfort and refinement.

Toyota Safety Sense Comes Standard
The 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan will come with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 as standard. This includes lane departure alert with steer assist, a pre-collision radar system, radar cruise control, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. CVT models also get a lane tracing assist system that helps keep the car in the center of the lane at all times.
Pricing & Availability
The 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan will arrive at dealerships this coming spring. Toyota has not announced pricing as of this writing.

2020 Porsche 911: An Engineering Marvel Considering . . . The 2020 Porsche 911 represents the 8th generation of the automaker’s iconic nameplate.
It’s wider and more aggressive looking with a new version of Porsche’s flat-six engine. 
Expect a multitude of driver assist systems when the new 911 hits the market next year.
The 2020 Porsche 911 just rolled out at the L.A. auto show, and it further cements, and further dilutes what the quintessential Porsche is. It’s bigger, heavier, more complex; it cranks out more power and gives you more performance. That Porsche can keep doing this, despite ever rising levels of weight and complexity, is an engineering miracle.
However, that they have to do it this way is a disaster.
Simple & Effective
The 911 started out as a brilliant response to a simple question: “How can we make the 356 better?” The 356, for all its fun and capability was, at it’s heart, a hot-rodded VW Beetle in better clothing. The first 911, for all its flaws (they had to weld pig iron to the front bumpers, the chassis tuning was so far off) answered that question in so comprehensive a manner that the 911 “worked” for decades.
Then, right about 1998, Porsche realized you can only push air and oil cooling so far, and the 911 changed. Then changed some more. And it changed even more from there.

Which leads us to this, the 2020 Porsche 911; bigger, longer, wider, heavier, bloated and, thanks to the dedicated application of Engineering, the “best” 911 ever. The 2020 911 is loaded with everything the modern “sports” car shopper demands (and Porsche shamelessly kowtows to). And yet, it still delivers sparkling performance.
What do we get for 2020 (besides that smug satisfaction)? Lots of everything!

Styling & Design: Some History, Some Necessity
The new body design is bigger all around, with wider fenders over staggered wheels (20-inch at the front and 21-inch at the back). The flared fenders of the sportier 911s are now seen on all models. New LED headlights flow into the fenders and aim for that round shape of the original 911. The door handles are now flush and the outside mirrors are meant to reduce wind noise.
The rear has that same “light bar” as found across the Porsche range.
Of course, there’s a big honking spoiler that’s appreciably wider with variable positions. Best of all, apart from the front and rear fasciae, the entire outer skin of the car is now made of aluminum. A nice, classic touch but also an engineering necessity because 911s are getting fat.

Interior Treatments: The Wild West
The interior has undergone a thorough redesign, but still manages to be an ergonomic nightmare. I can only chalk this up to “tradition” and the fact that Porsche people actually like when button placement and such comes across as a total afterthought. The tach is still front and center (thank you) but now we have the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system front and center in the middle console.
The seats are a complete redesign, with significantly improved lateral support at the shoulder.
However, Porsche really trumpets the new assistance systems, said to increase safety and comfort.

Assistance Systems: Tech Nannies & Babysitters
Those of us that are cynical enough to say it will mention that, yeah, you’re going to need all the “assistance systems” you can find to overcome the physics of having all that weight waaaay back there. Porsche now how the “Wet Mode” as standard equipment for the 2020 Porsche 911. Wet Mode detects water on the road, preconditions the stability control and anti-lock brake systems accordingly, and warns the driver.
You can call up vehicle settings particularly suited for wet roads via a button, or by means of the mode switch on the steering wheel. You know, so that way you don’t spin your brand new 911 off into the weeds like overconfident 911 owners since time immemorial.
There’s also a camera-based warning and brake assist system, standard, and Night Vision Assist with a thermal imaging camera. The Adaptive Cruise Control comes with automatic distance control, stop-and-go functionality, and an Emergency Assist function.

Power & Performance: No Worries Here
Yes, yes, I hear you shriek: what about the engine? Here, we have no worries or concerns. The next gen turbocharged flat-six engine has a primary focus on performance. New, larger turbochargers with electrically-controlled wastegate valves, a completely redesigned charge air intercooler, and piezo fuel injectors all help this 911 engine be the best engine it can be.
Everything is better with the 2020 Porsche 911: responsiveness, power, torque characteristics, the whole enchilada. Bottom line: 443 horsepower at 6,500 rpm (23 horsepower more than the previous model), 390 lb-ft. of torque (22 lb-ft. up from the previous model), and a comfortably-wide powerband from 2,300 to 5,000 rpm.
Meaning you should be able to work this thing all day and night.
Pricing & Availability
The 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S starts at $113,200, which is not unreasonable. You can order yours now but the new 911 should be in U.S. dealers by this summer.

Automoblog In-Depth: The Science of Pet Safety

When I visit my family, nothing tops the welcome I receive from our beloved German Shepherd. When I walk through the door, Jack greets me warmly and vigorously. He pushes past my mom and brother, rushing up as to say “about time you came back.” And not far behind is Turbo, our family cat for the last 15 years.
I will spend the duration of my time back home with those two glued to me.
Man’s Best Friend
A study last year found a dog’s heart will actually beat in sync with its owner. According to WebMD, those with pets often have lower blood pressure, stronger immune systems, and even a more vibrant dating life. Our pets being safe at home is one thing, but what about when traveling? How do we keep them safe? What if we are in an accident with our pets? Is there anything we can do?
Critical Moments
In 2004, Lindsey Wolko learned not all pet safety products deliver on their promises. After rescuing her dog Maggie from an abusive situation, Wolko found it challenging to travel with her. Thinking it was the right thing, she picked up a seat harness for Maggie at a pet store. A few months later with Maggie strapped in, Wolko had to hit the brakes to avoid an accident on Interstate 66 in Virginia.
“All I remember was Maggie screaming,” Wolko recalled. “The safety harness did nothing to protect her.”
The sudden braking caused the harness tether to wrap around Maggie’s back legs. Worse yet, she was launched forward, striking the back of the front seat. The harness effectively failed to restrain her. In time, Maggie recovered but the experience inspired Wolko to launch the Center for Pet Safety, a research and advocacy organization dedicated to the science of pet safety. As the organization grew, she found most pet products didn’t meet any sort of performance criteria.
“I learned a lot about how unregulated it is,” Wolko said. “One of the consistent themes among pet owners today is wondering if the products they buy are really going to save their pets in a crash.”

Uniform Standards
In 2011, the Center for Pet Safety began crash testing pet safety products, with additional tests in 2013 and 2015. A certification program was determined for harnesses, crates, and carriers; a pet seat pilot study followed in 2015. The certification and crash testing programs, carried out by MGA Research Corporation, are voluntary for pet safety product manufacturers. A rating is assigned accordingly and passing products are given a special seal for packaging.
“We want manufactures who understand our mission and what we are trying to do on behalf of the consumer,” Wolko said. “Ideally, once we are fully funded, we will offer something like what the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does and test in mass.”
The Center for Pet Safety published the results of their controlled testing, complete with videos and an analysis of the data. The 2013 Harness Study Testing concluded the Sleepypod Clickit Utility was consistent with its claims. The Sleepypod Clickit Utility kept the test dog restrained and on the seat during every controlled launch. Other products didn’t fare so well. One video shows a test dog being launched off the seat, then rapidly snapped back by the harness. The slow motion video shows the test dog striking the back of its head on the seat. Another harness fails so badly during the controlled launch, the test dog actually disappears from the camera frame it’s propelled so far. One harness even breaks apart entirely.
“We have had products fall apart right in front of the manufacturer’s eyes,” Wolko said. “I’ve counseled hundreds of brands and if they don’t test their products to a uniform standard, there is no way to know if they are actually going to work.”

Care & Concern
Addison Edmonds got his dog Gunner when he was still in college. Although he looked forward to their hunting expeditions together, Edmonds was always bothered when traveling with his best friend.
“I was never comfortable with him in the crates that were available on the market,” Edmonds recalled. “The best out there was a injection molded plastic crate that was, for lack of a better word, junk.”
The final straw for Edmonds was when the crate actually rolled over in his truck with Gunner inside.
“He’s an incredible dog and I told myself that somebody needs to make the best dog crate available,” Edmonds continued. “Part of being the best is also being the safest, so I started thinking about it for a while.”
Edmonds sold the advertising company he was running and moved back home to Nashville, Tennessee. He put everything into Gunner Kennels, a company today that produces kennels and accessories for pet safety. Edmonds will hear testimonials from customers about how a Gunner product saved their dog’s life, but getting there wasn’t easy.
“As soon as we got the first one made, I thought it was ready to go, but I wanted to run some crash tests,” Edmonds said. “I searched online to see if anybody ever did crash testing with dummy dogs and how it played out.”

Trial & Error
Edmonds eventually found the Center for Pet Safety and met with Wolko and MGA Research Corporation in Virginia. The initial tests showed the original design was prone to failure: the door opened up on impact and the tie down ends, used for strapping the kennel, bent out of place.
“To my surprise, the design was not perfect so I had to go back to the drawing board and get a couple of engineers involved,” Edmonds said.
The second round of testing was a bit more successful, with the tie down points holding. The door, however, still proved problematic, despite a new frame design. The crash tests repeatedly showed the dummy dog flying toward the kennel door and striking it, which is where the failure was happening. This was, to an already dismayed Edmonds, unacceptable.
“The door would just bust open,” he recalled. “I had to think of a way to keep that door shut so it was back to the drawing board again.”
After reassurance from friends and family, Edmonds was determined to get his kennel perfect. More engineering work ensued, with new safety latches being designed and the hinges reinforced. Stainless steel replaced aluminum and each rivet given special attention. The modifications worked and the final tests confirmed as much, with the door holding in place. Edmonds even had MGA Research Corporation perform crush testing on a machine with a 4,000 lbs. threshold.
“We actually broke their machine,” Edmonds said.
“That thing is rock solid,” Wolko added. “The tooling just to manufacture the Gunner kennels astounds me.”
Today, the Gunner Kennels’ G1 Intermediate is the only travel crate with a 5 Star Crash Test Rating from the Center For Pet Safety. Gunner branded kennels house mainly sporting dogs, but lately the company is getting requests for smaller kennels. Even military branches and law enforcement entities have reached out to Edmonds.
“I knew that was a potential market but I didn’t know it would come so quickly,” he said. “These are the most highly trained dogs in the world and until now, they were being carried around in inexpensive crates.”

Tips & Advice
Lauren Witt is an automotive product specialist based in metro Detroit. She represents automakers at a variety of events and shows across the country. Heavy travel is common for Witt who also has two dogs; Capone, a six-and-a-half-year-old Pug and Karma, a two-and-a-half-year-old Labrador mix. She advises pet owners determine the most comfortable option for their companions, be it a harness, crate, or special seat.
“Every pet is different in the car so you need to find out which method works best for them,” Witt said.
Little things, like bringing along a favorite blanket to place inside a crate, will help pets adjust to traveling. Patience is also key, according to Witt.
“Pets are sensitive to your emotions and the last thing they need is something else to stress them out on their trip,” she said.
The Center for Pet Safety offers general tips for those traveling with pets. Making sure vaccinations are current, packing a first aid kit, and bringing extra food and water are among the top recommendations. When selecting a harness, consumers should find one that does not have a tether or zipline-style feature to prevent distractions. Limiting distractions is another point both animal and automotive experts agree on.
“Pets in a vehicle can be a huge distraction if not secured properly, and we all know the dangers of distracted driving,” Witt said, “Not only are you putting yourself and other people on the road at risk, but you are also putting your pets at risk.”
Wolko recommends using a new pet safety device on a series of shorter trips first, then gradually increasing the duration of the car ride. This will allow time for pets to adjust to the new safety device, be it a harness, crate, or seat. Other points of advice include using a happy, reassuring voice and to always place pets in the back seat.

Discerning Eyes
Digesting this information might be a bit much for pet owners, especially ones worried about safety. Based on the testing conducted by the Center for Pet Safety, buying the average harness or crate doesn’t guarantee protection for pets in the event of an accident. Wolko hopes the work she is doing will garner more public awareness and encourage pet safety product manufacturers to further examine and ultimately test their designs.
“That’s one of the reasons the research and knowledge sharing is so important,” she said.
The pet safety products on the market today are sold with little to no oversight, so it’s vital consumers do their research. The Center for Pet Safety notes that just because a certain product says it is crash tested does not mean it actually passed crash testing. The organization cautions consumers, saying a pet safety product cannot pass even the best crash test if it is measured against something developed for humans. It’s important consumers understand, according to the Center for Pet Safety, that many pet safety product manufacturers do not publish their test evidence. Above all, pet owners are advised to maintain a keen eye when choosing a particular product.
“Do your research,” Edmonds said. “Our pets are also our family members and need to be restrained properly in a vehicle just like our children.”
“I read a quote once and I don’t know who said it: ‘whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend, never owned a dog’ and I couldn’t agree more,” Witt added.

For 2018 the Range Rover Sport is getting a thorough going over. It’s not a full blown remake, but it’s much more then a mid-cycle refresh. New engines, more tech – lots of new tech – and lots of nips, tucks, and styling re-dos here and there. Range Rover uses the word “transformation” a lot in their press materials, and even though that’s an ever so British way to put things, it’s not far off from what’s actually happening with the 2018 Range Rover Sport.
The Joneses
I’ll get to all the new goodies, tech, powertrain, and otherwise in just a bit, but let me get the bottom line out of the way first. The 2018 Range Rover Sport goes for . . . are you kidding me? Sheesh! I mean, I know these things are expensive, but I had to read the specs twice to make sure I wasn’t having a stroke. The 2018 Range Rover Sport starts at a little less than 67-thousand dollars and tops out at a little under 114-thousand. That’s like Porsche Carrera territory. And yes, yes, I know. Range Rovers can go places and do things that Porsches etc. cannot do, but that is a lot of money to pay for a fancy jeep. But I get it. One of the fun things about being rich is letting other people know how rich you are, or so they tell me.

Power & Performance
So what do you get for the cost of a nice tract home in Dearborn, Michigan? Honestly, you do get a lot, and it’s pretty nice stuff. The company says the upcoming 2018 Range Rover Sport (it should be arriving at U.S. dealers by early 2018) is “transformed by new technology.” It will feature an updated interior and exterior, along with enhancements to the powertrain, greater powertrain choices, and a buffet of tech goodies throughout. The upcoming Range Rover Sport lineup will consist of V6 and V8 gasoline models, a V6 diesel variant and, topping out the range, is the fastest Range Rover Sport to date, the 575 horsepower Sport SVR. Now, why you’d want a particularly fast truck/jeep/thing is a little beyond me at the moment, but, given that the SVR is capable of hitting 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, no one is going to call it underpowered or slow.
A plug-in hybrid electric powertrain is planned for 2019.
Vehicle Treatments
The revamp of the new Range Rover’s exterior aims to modernize the design and make the Sport look more dynamic, without changing its character. In other words, it still looks like a big box The Queen would drive around, only better. The front end has been reworked with a new LED headlight design alongside a redesigned grille. The lights and the grill are also better integrated with the new bumper and there’s a more aggressive profile overall.
The inside is like James Bond’s flat in Kensington or Eggsy’s place from The Kinsgmen: It’s veddy, veddy British with acres of leather and grove’s worth of fine wood hither and yon and tech, tech, tech! The new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system is said to be the most advanced ever created by Jaguar Land Rover. It features two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens, which form the centerpiece of a cabin Range Rover describes as “minimalist.”
I’m not sure what Rem Koolhaas or Walter Gropius would call it, but I’d bet you it wouldn’t be minimalist.

Outdoor Pursuits & Gesture Controls
There are 14 power points (power outlets of one variety or another) provided in your 2018 Range Rover Sport, all the better to enhance your in-car connectivity. There’s even a “domestic” (domestic as in it’s a plug like you use at home) socket to keep laptops and other devices charged without the use of an inverter.
Thanks to the Jaguar Land Rover Activity Key, you can lock and unlock your Range Rover Sport without the need to carry a fob. The Ragney PR people say this is “ideal for outdoor pursuits,” which made me smile; “What, fox hunting?”
And the tech goodies don’t stop there, not even close. The new Range Rover Sport comes with this thing called the “Gesture Sunblind.” And it, get this, opens and closes the sunblind using a gesture control system that senses your hand movement. Swipe “rearward” in front of the rearview mirror and the blind opens, swipe “forward” and it closes. And I bet the entertainment value of watching someone flail around in front of their rearview mirror trying to get this thing to work will be priceless.

2018 Chevrolet Express 2500 Van: GM Aims To Please

I know, I know. This seems dull as dishwater but, believe it or not, fleet sales of full-size vans are A. Big. Deal. Yes, like any other gearhead out there, I would be much more interested if this was about a Chevrolet Express 2500 Van with a Corvette C7.R drivetrain, but, alas, no. This is about new packages and features for the Chevrolet Express 2500 Van that will be sold by the tens-of-thousands over the coming months.
Many Uses
Yes, Corvettes are fun and interesting, but they’re not what you would call a “profit center” for Chevrolet. Nope, stuff like the Chevrolet Express 2500 Vans are bread and butter on wheels. Old Louis’ outfit cranks these things out like doughnuts on a Monday morning and sells them just as fast. And, the more stuff like Express 2500 Vans Chevy can sell, the more Vettes they can make.
The mindset here is really easy to understand: Make a full-size van that is stripped of everything, because our buyers are going to modify them to suit. Okay, okay, not really stripped of everything (although there is a variation on that), but stripped down to only the most useful features. Fleet vans are bought, usually a few or a dozen or more at a time by outfits like city municipalities, large companies, shoot, fleet vans are even bought by TV stations and made into rolling production facilities.
Value Feedback
So what a full-size van manufacturer, Chevy in this case, wants to do is not include stuff that’s just going to get taken out and thrown away. However, they will definitely include stuff like towing packages or spray on cargo liners in place of carpet. Chevy, being the clever young sparks they are, decided the right approach was to sit down and talk with and listen to customers and dealers and see what they wanted. They came up with five main priorities: Enhance productivity and driver satisfaction, positively impact driver safety, reduce downtime, simplify ordering, and reduce operating costs.

New Packages
Chevrolet came up with four new packages for 2018 as well. There’s the Communications Package which includes Sirius XM Satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, an enhanced audio system, and a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel with vehicle controls. The Safety Package gets you Rear Park Assist and Side Blind Zone Alert, heated mirrors, a tilt steering wheel, and cruise control.
If you opt for the Enhanced Convenience Package, your Chevy van will come with remote keyless entry, remote vehicle start, tilt-wheel, cruise control, heated mirrors, and beefed-up trailering equipment, including a trailering hitch platform and dual 4-pin/7-pin sealed connectors. Finally, the Cargo Package comes with an easy to clean spray-on cargo liner. Drivers can haul materials without a second thought to scratches and scrapes, and can do an easy clean up when the day is done.
Power & Performance
Regardless of the package, your van is motivated by Chevy’s 341 horsepower, Vortec 6.0L V8 engine. The Vortec plant, which is flex-fuel capable if your fleet is running on E85, allows for a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 9,600 lbs. and a maximum trailering capacity of a whopping 10,000 lbs. Also included is the Commercial Link telematics system with a one year subscription. Commercial Link uses the built-in OnStar connectivity stuff to provide useful vehicle data back to the home office; nifty little helpers like maintenance notifications and vehicle location, so owners can manage their business vehicles more effectively.
Keep On Truckin’
You’ll be seeing a lot of these around, even if you aren’t in the potential customer pool. Delivery vans, plumbers, home contractors, and the like. City motor pools will be snapping these up by the batch so you’ll see them wending their nondescript flavors this way and that. Usually painted white or some shade of gray, fleet vans are a big part of what keeps society moving.
