McLaren 600LT: One Rare Bird The new McLaren 600LT is here. The LT stands for “Longtail” and McLaren is making a bit of a fetish of what it means. What it all comes down to though is that the new 600LT is the fastest, most powerful and most track-focused, but still road legal, Sports Series McLaren yet.
Still road legal?
Music to my ears.
Longer & Lighter
This longtail stuff (one word in the preferred nomenclature) all started with the F1 GTR Longtail, a racing permutation of the fantastic F1 three-seater. It later showed up in a variant of the 675, the McLaren 675LT, and now the McLaren 600LT. From the outside, the most notable features of the 600LT are the extra, 2.9 inches added to the back end, the extended front splitter, lengthened rear diffuser (of course), and fixed rear wing.
You can’t see all the weight saving they did on this beast, but Woking was able to trim a substantial 211.6 lbs. off the 570S Coupé and its base measurements. The chassis is a lightweight carbon fiber “monocoque” (of course) and there’s also new carbon fiber bodywork to lower weight and optimize aero performance.
McLaren has also added top-exit exhausts for the new LT model, and I’m sure there’s sound engineering reasons for that – in the 600LT’s case, that would be a “substantial weight savings” – but it also seems like these top-exit exhausts are turning into some sort of fashion statement since Porsche first used them on their sublime 918 Spyder.

Less Is More
The interior of the track-focused but still road legal 600LT is pretty minimalist. There are carbon fiber racing seats that were first seen on the McLaren P1 and lightweight Alcantara trim throughout. If the P1-sourced seats aren’t enough, you can opt for super-lightweight carbon fiber seats developed for the McLaren Senna. And if you want even more, other weight saving options include a carbon fiber roof and cantrails and vented carbon fiber front fenders.
If you tick every lightweight option box, the lightest dry weight of the new McLaren 600LT is as low as 2,749.2 lbs.
Power & Performance
Motive force for the 600LT is supplied by a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter V8 with an uprated cooling system for 592 horsepower and a maximum torque output of 457 lb-ft. The power-to-weight ratio of the McLaren 600LT is an inspiring 474 horsepower per ton.
The McLaren 600LT rides on the forged aluminum double-wishbone suspension and the braking system from the second-generation McLaren Super Series. The tires are (what else?) Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires; the steering is quicker, and the throttle and brake pedal responses have been sharpened. And along with mounting the exhausts virtually behind the driver’s shoulder, the significantly firmer engine mounts should bring incredible sounds from the powertrain into the cabin.

Manufacturing & Availability
Production of the hand-assembled 600LT Coupé will begin this October at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, Surrey and should last a year, but no word on the total number McLaren will make. The company only says that volume will be “strictly limited.”
You might want to head down to your McLaren dealer and check, however, since the 600LT is still available to order. Sadly, no word on price, but whatever it turns out to be, purchasing your new 600LT Coupé also includes the tuition for the Pure McLaren Road Owner Track Day.

Volvo Launches Stand-Alone Personal Mobility Service Volvo Cars has launched a new, stand-alone brand simply titled “M” that will provide on-demand access to cars and other mobility services through an app. M will also learn the preferences and habits of each individual user in an effort to create a more personalized experience.
“Volvo Cars is becoming more than just a car company,” explained Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars President and Chief Executive. “We recognize that urban consumers are rethinking traditional car ownership. M is part of our answer.”
Personalized Service
M will go beyond merely informing users where they can pick up their car. A proprietary learning technology, currently under development, can ask users what their needs are.
“We are evolving to become a direct-to-consumer services provider under our new mission ‘Freedom to Move’,” Samuelsson continued. “The launch of M creates new sources of revenue for Volvo Cars and will be integral to the company’s ambition to build more than 5 million direct consumer relationships by the middle of the next decade.”
“The services currently available mainly offer alternatives to a taxi or public transit,” said Bodil Eriksson, CEO of Volvo Car Mobility. “We’re focused on the way people use the cars they own, which sets us apart. We aim to provide a real alternative to that experience. It should enable us to live life on our terms, getting things done and maximizing precious time.”
Markets & Locations
Volvo Car Group has also partnered with Sunfleet, a top car sharing company in Sweden where M will first be put into service. The company will be fully integrated into M next year, making the service available to all existing Sunfleet members. Further information will be released later this year, although M is slated to debut in the United States next spring.
“Stockholm, Sweden, will serve as M’s base of development and where we already conduct extensive testing,” Eriksson added. “A broader Beta test will take place this autumn.”

1. Driving Versus Shipping: Which Is Better?
Here’s everyone’s favorite answer: It depends. There are many things that determine the costs of shipping a car from state to state, so let’s take a look at some of the many factors involved. If you bought a car from another state and you are planning to drive the vehicle home, you might want to consider the following expenses, which could drive (pun intended) up costs unexpectedly:
Plane tickets, cab fares, and fuel cost to fly to the next city, pick up the car, and drive the vehicle home.
Wear and tear. Driving for long distances might negatively affect the longevity of the engine, transmission, brakes, and tires. This holds especially true for vintage or classic automobiles. There is also a risk of breaking down along the way and the necessary repair costs (and time) needed to get the car running again.
Hotel or lodging expenses. Unless you’re He-Man and fortified with the powers of Castle Grayskull, it is dangerous to drive for more than eight hours a day. Studies have shown that 20 percent of accidents on major roads can be attributed to driving fatigue and tiredness. Sleeping in a cramped car will only make you feel cranky in the morning.
But if you decide to ship the car, you can get an express delivery at a fully competitive rate. Considering the fact current gas prices are hovering around $3.60 to $3.80 per gallon, and replacing a flat tire may cost upwards of $100.00 (or more), shipping a car might save you more money than you can imagine, not to mention saving you time and the potential headaches associated with driving a vehicle over long distances.

2. Consider The Variables
In order to determine the cost of shipping a car, you also need to ponder on four main variables:
Shipping distance. Fuel costs and labor expenses will rise in relation to the total distance of the shipment. This is the main factor that will determine the final shipping price of your vehicle.
Size, weight, and condition. It will be less expensive to ship a VW Golf or Ford Fiesta from New York to Miami compared to shipping a Cadillac Escalade or GMC Yukon over the same distance. The vehicle will be classified as a sedan, truck, SUV, or van and will be further categorized as small, medium, or large prior to shipping. It is also less expensive to ship a working car versus one that doesn’t run at all. The car shipping company takes longer to ship an inoperable vehicle. It will also require a special truck with a winch to safely load the vehicle.
The destination and route. It is more affordable to ship a vehicle close to interstates and highways. You can expect to pay more if the shipping address is located hundreds of miles from the nearest town or interstate. If you belong to the latter, you can arrange to pick-up the vehicle or meet the driver at the nearest exit to save on shipping costs. Although distance will primarily determine the cost, don’t be surprised to pay less money on long-distance “hot routes.”
Time frame and season. It is better to ship a car in the spring and winter than in the summer and fall. Shipping activity in the south will rise during the fall while people up north prefer to do most of their shipping in the spring. If you live in California, for example, the cost of shipping a car to Los Angeles is better in the winter since fewer clients are shipping cars to this particular area during that time.

3. Type & Means of Transport
Door-to-door transport is the most common and least expensive way to ship a car. What this simply means is the driver will load the vehicle and drop it off as close to your home as possible. Transport trucks may be prohibited to roam on certain residential areas and are restricted by the presence of speed bumps, tight turns, narrow streets, and even low-hanging tree branches along the way.
The simplest way to save money on door-to-door car shipping is to meet the driver at the most convenient location with a large parking lot.
Another consideration is “open air versus enclosed” transport. Open car shipping is the cheapest way to ship a car and is the most common method. However, the car will be exposed to harmful elements such as sun, sand, rain, dust, or snow. If you choose open car shipping, make sure to tick the Top Load option to prevent paint damage caused by road debris if the car is placed in the lower section of the hauler.
If you are dealing with a high-priced customized sports car, supercar, hyper car, or vintage automobile, it is best to choose enclosed transport, albeit at a higher price. Enclosed transport will ensure the vehicle is protected against the elements.

Hyundai Motor, Autotalks Begin Partnership Centered On V2X Technology Hyundai Motor has begun a strategic partnership with Autotalks, a technology company that specializes in the manufacturing of Vehicle to Everything – sometimes stylized as “V2X” – communication chipsets. V2X technology allows vehicles to communicate with each other, as well as road users and infrastructure.
Officials say the strategic partnership comes as a result of a direct investment from Hyundai to accelerate the development and eventual deployment of V2X technology for autonomous cars.
Connected Approach
In human-operated vehicles, V2X systems relay important information in the form of alerts and notifications, and can also actuate the vehicle in dangerous situations. In self-driving vehicles, V2X complements existing sensors, allowing them to make more informed decisions on busy roads.
“Connectivity is one of the core technologies that can be applied to smart city business models, as well as autonomous driving and infotainment,” explained Yunseong Hwang, director of open innovation business group at Hyundai Motor Company.
“Having a top global car manufacturer such as Hyundai invest directly in Autotalks is not only a vote of confidence in the company, but a testament to the growing V2X market,” added Hagai Zyss, Autotalks CEO. “Hyundai’s pursuit of cutting-edge communication and safety technologies is a perfect match with Autotalks’ leading V2X capabilities.”
Existing Platforms
Earlier this year, Hyundai announced a strategic partnership with Aurora to bring self-driving vehicles to the market by 2021. The automaker was already granted a licence in Nevada in 2015 to test automated vehicles on the state’s public roads, and last year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Hyundai publicly demonstrated their autonomous technology.
“Hyundai Motor will continue to invest in disruptive technologies that are in line with Hyundai’s current and future strategic pillars,” Hwang said.

What’s Hot, What’s Not
This is a refreshing alternative to other sites that focus mainly on click-bait articles about automobiles rather than relaying facts and figures from an actual car lover’s point of view. Riley and his team work hard to also provide accurate technical information and vehicle specs.
“In our early days we received a lot of traffic from social networks. When we started doing the list articles we would get destroyed by our readers when we didn’t give more facts and specs,” he recalled. “We learned how to pack in all the info that our readers are looking for and not waste their time with the stuff they didn’t want to see.”
What really makes AutoWise.com stand out are the what’s hot and what’s not articles on every model from a particular manufacturer. Dream Cars
What better way to talk to a car enthusiast than by asking questions about their favorite cars? So we asked Riley what he likes to drive, and there’s no doubt on what he loves the most.
“The Lexus GS was always a favorite of mine and I’ve owned a few of them. I think because I loved the 2JZ engine so much but couldn’t afford the Supra,” Riley joked. “I spend a lot of time traveling, so some of my favorites are not available in the USA market such as the Toyota Hilux and the Land Cruiser 70 series.”
“My first American car ever was a 4-door Ford Lariat. That truck changed my opinion on American cars for the better,” he continued. “It’s almost cliché these days but there is no way I could leave off the R34 Nissan Skyline. It was an instant classic and there’s no refuting that.”

Changing Landscapes
Before parting ways, we asked Riley about what he feels are the most interesting trends in the automotive industry along with his future plans for AutoWise.com.
“As much as we love internal combustion engines and the sound and feel of gasoline-powered cars at AutoWise, the most interesting shift right now would have to be the industry’s move towards the electrification of their lineups alongside the addition of driverless technology,” Riley answered.

An Afternoon Shine With Mothers Polish

An Afternoon Shine With Mothers Polish Living in Michigan is a challenge, especially during the winter, but summer isn’t any better. The weather lately in Detroit has been unpredictable, warm and sunny one day, then rainy and cool the next. Many of the roads I frequent here in the Detroit metro – Woodward Avenue, Southfield Freeway, Interstate 94, M10, and Fort Street – are loaded with traffic, and my daily drives take me through industrial areas and patches of road construction.
You can wash a vehicle here, and by the time you get home, there is a layer of dust on the paint.
Recently, the team at Mothers asked if I would evaluate a few of their most popular products. I obliged, putting them through the paces during my latest wash outing. Mothers has over 70 car care products in their portfolio but the ones below will work regardless of what type of vehicle you own.

Polishing Cloths & Quick Detail Towel
Mothers sent me one of each and both are very specific in their uses. The polishing cloth is “edgeless” and lighter, and is best suited for removing leftover glazes and waxes. The cloth is soft, lint free, and glides nicely across the paint. By contrast, the Quick Detail Towel is more robust and acted like a vacuum when I used it, removing any leftover particles, dirt, and grime following the initial wash.
The Mothers Quick Detail Towel has two “naps”: the long one is best for wiping down the vehicle immediately after washing it, whereas the shorter nap will help with that final buff and polish.
I really liked the longer nap. I always wipe down my vehicles after washing and before applying any other products. The long nap gave me that ability.
After a few minutes of use, I would shake out both cloths.
The Mothers Polishing Cloths and Quick Detail Towels are perfect for those “finishing touches.” I kept them in my pocket so I could easily grab them when I noticed any leftover dirt or grime.
Instant Detailer
This was my favorite in the Mothers package because my wash jobs are not complete until I apply something like this. It comes from my early years in the automotive business when I sold cars at a dealership. When you put a car on the showfloor, a good shine is essential. The nasty pink stuff we had in our desks was referred to as “showroom shine,” and we would wipe down the vehicles when we had spare time.
Nice thing is, the Mothers Instant Detailer gave me the shine without the terrible smell (it actually smells pleasant).
Spray it on, spread evenly with a soft cloth, and then wipe away/buff the excess with another towel, like the short nap of the Quick Detail Towel.
If you don’t have a lot of time, a bottle of this will do the trick. It took me ten minutes using the two towels Mothers provided. The Instant Detailer comes from the Mothers “Speed” line, a series of products designed to work quicker than their counterparts.
Word of caution: don’t apply it when it’s too hot out because it evaporates quickly.
The Mothers Instant Detailer gave the Venezia Blue Metallic paint of my 500X a laser-like look in the sunlight. With the rain in Michigan lately, this was a welcome treat.
Carnauba Wash & Wax
This was quite useful on my lower quarter panels where grime, especially from these recent rainstorms, builds up. Hitting it with a high pressure hose is not enough to remove it either. You can opt for the scrub brush at the car wash, but I understand if you are hesitant – they are often dirty from frequent prior use and I’ve known them to cause a scratch or two.
The Mothers Carnauba Wash & Wax can be a good substitute. Add a little to a bucket of water and “shampoo” accordingly with a sponge or mitt. You can use this between your regular waxing too – in this case, I applied it to the “problem areas” on my vehicle, but it can be used on the entire exterior.
Carnauba, native to Brazil, is known for its heat tolerance.
The photos below are of the three biggest “problem areas” on my 500X – areas that, no matter what, always collect dirt and grime. They include the rear window, lower quarter panels, and the section behind my rear wheels. A normal spray gun won’t get these areas clean, neither will an automatic wash. It always takes me giving these areas some extra attention and care, and the Mothers Carnauba Wash & Wax was a huge help.





PowerBall
I award Mothers some serious cool points here. Attach this little guy to the end of any variable speed drill and you have a built-in polisher. Mothers says it can be used on just about everything, from taillight lenses and wheels, to tile and marble.
Consensus
These items were given to me by Mothers to raise awareness for their #PristinePolish campaign. Still, I enjoyed using them considering I made a New Year’s resolution to wash my vehicle more. And up until they sent me this package, I didn’t have any nice cleaning supplies to really act on that resolution.
Mothers has products for those that detail vehicles for a living, but these “ordinary” ones are still professional grade. Prior to this, I had never used a Mothers product. I always assumed they were for the higher-end types of cars you see at auto shows, or again, for those making a living as a detailer.
I was, however, glad to have this misconception corrected, especially by things like the Instant Detailer. Mothers is still ideal for that dream exotic or ultra-powerful muscle car, but for those of us who drive ordinary everyday cars, trucks, and crossovers, Mothers will work nicely.
For those of us who live in colder climates, it takes some extra work when it comes to keeping a vehicle clean, but I will be excited to try these items Mothers sent me when winter hits.
True to form, we had another rain storm overnight, but the Mothers treatments from the prior afternoon held up.

It’s a calm summer day in Holland, Michigan, a thirty some thousand people city in the state’s western region. A near 200 miles from Detroit, Holland is not a traditional automotive headquarters. Driving through town, past the tulip beds or one of the many churches, there are few if any clues Holland is really at the epicenter of the automotive industry. Holland might generate a reaction not unlike many quiet American communities: that it’s a good place to settle down and raise a family.
Core Platforms
Many of the most influential ideas regarding the future of mobility will emerge from Holland. It’s part of the reason why Faurecia, one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers, has set up shop here. The company operates in 35 countries, employs nearly 99,000, and has over 630 programs in development at any given time. Their largest customers include VW, Ford, Renault-Nissan, and PSA. In North America, Faurecia recorded over 5 billion in value-added sales last year, with a workforce 21,000 strong.
“We were a bit more European focused historically and that is why the brand is less known here in North America but that is changing,” said Jim Hotary, Director of Innovation, Faurecia Automotive Seating.
Faurecia is comprised of three business groups related to the modern automobile: seating, interiors, and clean mobility. Across these platforms, the company helps automakers accomplish a range of goals, from weight and emissions reduction, to increasing comfort and safety for the driver. In North America, vehicles like the Chrysler Pacifica, Audi Q5, and Lincoln Continental uniquely benefit from Faurecia’s designs and products.
“For every customer in every program, we have a different mix of products, and there are different technologies involved,” Hotary explained. “We like to make sure we understand the customers of our customers; how they are unique and how their use cases differ.”

Strategic Distance
Globally, Faurecia has 300 sites and 30 R&D centers. So why the need for Holland? Why the need for this small community on the heels of Lake Michigan? It doesn’t make sense until the understanding is had that Faurecia considers themselves a “make tank” not a “think tank.” Their quaint upstairs office in a Holland plaza, once inhabited by a furniture manufacturer, is the embodiment of that philosophy.
“We call it strategic distance; we are like a secret outpost but we think that is an important tool to have,” Hotary said. “We are close enough that we can be in Detroit to have customer meetings and work with the team there, but far enough away so we can have the focus and, in some ways, the permission to experiment with things that are a little crazy.”
The automotive industry is a bustling metropolis unto itself, a 24-hour affair that rarely, if ever, concedes. It’s a vast machine generating a lot of noise but this Faurecia team is away from the sound waves, thriving in their Holland office space which resembles more a promising startup than a multinational corporation. The team is diverse in their backgrounds, from engineering and business, to marketing and consumer research. The mix of competencies allows the team to rigorously vet and examine the next batch of innovative ideas or disruptive solutions that await our future automobiles.
“Because of the cross-functional nature of the team here, we are able to think more holistically about what the products will be,” Hotary said. “We are trying to understand what will matter to end consumers and how mobility needs are shifting.”

Learn Fast Approach
The Holland space easily allows for mock-ups based on certain in-vehicle situations. The goal is to get an idea of what is feasible or possible before money and time is spent developing something that, for whatever reason, doesn’t work. The mock-ups allow the team to see potential pitfalls with a product or design well ahead of time.
“If you look at how a lot of organizations develop ideas compared to a learn fast approach: I mean, I have seen companies spend 6 months, 12 months, even 2 years building a product, and going into CAD to develop something before they have even tired to experience it,” said Matthew Benson, Innovation Manager, Faurecia Ventures.
Hotary and Benson lead us through an experience mock-up that proved rather eye-opening, showing how one could invest a lot of resources into the next “big automotive idea,” but completely miss the mark. Our simulation, or mock-up, was an autonomous vehicle. We wanted it so the occupants could face each other for more quality time when the car was in automation. At that point, Benson took two chairs from around the table and set them directly across from each other. I sat in one, Benson in the other. Granted, we were not in an actual vehicle, but it quickly showed how awkward and intrusive it would be if we were resolved to this position for the entire drive.
“With these experience mock-ups, our goal is to in 30 seconds, 30 minutes, one day, or one week, get to a point where we can have some kind of experience to know whether or not something is worth pursuing,” Benson said.
“You gain tremendous insight and you realize what the issues are immediately when you mock-up a given situation,” Hotary added. “We know how to make seats rotate, that’s not rocket science, but what we are trying to answer is do people actually want to be in those positions, and if they do, how do we manage that in the vehicle.”

Inspiring Mobility
Faurecia’s Holland space is purpose-built for the learn fast approach. Once an idea or in-vehicle simulation is conceived, the team will pull out the hot glue gun and plywood from the small workshop in the corner. On the opposite wall, they tinker in the electronics and software area, eventually combining the two to create the appropriate experience model for an endless amount of in-vehicle scenarios. The focus is to determine what will be meaningful for car owners as mobility trends evolve.
“You have to build things and experiment with them and get people around them,” Hotary explained. “If you don’t, then you are not able to see the problem correctly and really get to the core of the issue.”
The future of mobility is changing and with it, our expectations and desires about how vehicles should perform and function. The possibilities are limitless, especially when things like ride sharing, alternative powertrains, or fully automated vehicles are introduced. There are new business models and innovation ideas popping up in the automotive universe constantly, like the little creatures in a whack-a-mole machine at the local fair. Yet Faurecia believes such ideas are cheap and the real emphasis should be placed on how these now uncharted territories will one day (if they don’t already) affect how we purchase, own, and even perceive vehicles.
For example, with automated vehicles, elderly and disabled people may want to utilize one. A percentage of the population now has access to mobility where they didn’t before, so how does that affect things? Hence ingress and egress and comfort become very important. What about an executive who wants to conference call his corporate team in the vehicle? Suddenly acoustics and connected systems become a focal point. How about the couple who buys an automated car looking to rekindle their romance on an anniversary getaway? Now the mock-up we did – where we discovered the seats facing each other were uncomfortable – carries significant relevance.
“We call our team the Cockpit of the Future but it’s not actually cockpit, it’s cockpits,” Benson said. “There may be different situational needs that emerge but we are trying to provide solutions we can leverage across many things – what we would call a technical brick – that we can use to solve multiple needs across different types of vehicles, situations, and users.”

Open Innovation
The Cockpit of the Future sits in the middle of Faurecia’s Holland office, a vehicle exoskeleton of wood and metal known as “the buck.” The structure can be molded and maneuvered to resemble many of today’s automotive and architectural setups. The buck has an artificial steering wheel, center console, dashboard, seats, and many of the same things we see in cars today. Yet in the buck, they can be moved, interchanged, and even removed depending on the situation. Consider the aforementioned executive who needs to manage the corporate team from the road. Let’s imagine the vehicle they want is a hybrid luxury sedan with an advanced level of automation. And let’s say one of their desires is that the environment inside allows for family interaction becasue when they are not working, their grandchildren will be with them.
The buck can then be configured to show how that particular vehicle, in that particular scenario, might need to look.
“Today’s trends are driving thousands of different combinations, especially since we are going to see more connected vehicles,” Benson explained. “Our role is to enable the future of mobility, and in the buck, we can start thinking about how a vehicle is setup in a particular manner. We understand how much value is in these different scenarios by using predictive cabin data and analytics to ultimately personalize these experiences for the end user.”

Purpose Driven
On the trip back to Detroit, I envisioned how my own vehicle might look a few years down the road with some of the things I had seen at Faurecia. I would play them out in my head: “okay, so we have an SUV, the customer is a baby boomer, and they need to get work done on their commute, but want a sense of performance in the vehicle, etc. etc.” The combinations came one after another, with no shortage of available scenarios, but I sensed what some consumers may feel when confronted with today’s vast curve of automotive trends. Is there a space for yours truly? Is there a future automobile – in the midst of this looming yet unknown world of autonomy, and all this talk of mobility trends – is there something that will still fit me and my family?
Faurecia believes there is.
“This is what we focus on,” Hotary said. “This is what we get up every day to do.”

Restomods: Best of Both Worlds

It’s an age-old car question – are you a classic or a modern car lover? In recent years, we’ve seen people ask “why not both” through a new trend: resto-modding. While there is no clear-cut definition, a restomod vehicle is one that has been externally restored to original, or close to the original appearance, yet has its mechanical components updated to include modern automotive offerings. This allows car enthusiasts to have the best of both worlds – a car which maintains its classic, identifiable look while also having performance aspects that match today’s sports cars.
Where it Began
To understand where the trend of restomod vehicles came from, we need to look back at the history of the classic car hobby. In the 1950s, when the pastime was still young, there were two very distinct segments of hobbyists: those who collected old cars, which at the time included Ford Model Ts and 1930s luxury brands such as Packard, Dusenberg, and Lincoln; and those who built their own hot rods – heavily modified classic cars with newer engines, made for linear speed with custom sheet metal.
Collectors prided themselves on authenticity and keeping their cars in line with the original factory specs. This group was more interested in showing their cars at events than driving them, so the lower horsepower engines and inferior brakes included in these early models were not an issue for many enthusiasts. This side of the hobby is still very popular today, with many collectors transporting their authentic models to car shows across the country rather than driving them.
Modern Overhaul
“Hot rodders” on the other hand wanted to change everything about the car, inside and out, for an overall better driving experience. This meant bigger motors and better brakes as well as custom paint, headlights, and lots of chrome accents to give the car a unique and modernized look.
As time went by, the car hobby matured and the baby boomer generation became interested in the cars of their youth: classics of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, otherwise known as the muscle car era. This is when the concept of the restomod was truly born. Many owners of classic cars from these decades preserved the external appearance of the vehicle while taking advantage of the latest engine, brake, and steering technology to allow for improved safety, performance, and driving dynamics.

Trends Today
One of the most popular cars for resto-modding is the Ford Mustang, particularly models from the 1960s. Hundreds of thousands were built so replacement and restoration parts are readily available, allowing hobbyists to keep the original look alive. However, these Mustangs can also be equipped with newer Ford drivetrains, allowing for modern upgrades to be made internally.
The Chevy Camaro is a close second to the Mustang for resto-modding. Restomod Camaros are often upgraded with big wheels, matte paint, hood scoops, and spoilers to give them a more modern look. Similar to the Mustang, classic Camaros can be equipped with V8 Corvette engines and newer drivetrains, allowing for a sleek look with some unsuspecting punch under the hood.
The restomod side of the car hobby continues to grow, especially as younger generations become interested in classic cars. These individuals want the classic look of an old car without compromising on the performance and safety features available today, so resto-modding is perfect for them. It’s easy for people who are new to the hobby, as well as those who have been collecting for years, to inject their own creativity when restoring these cars. We expect to see resto-modding continue and gain momentum as drivers seek out modern safety and performance features while also taking pride in maintaining the unique aesthetics of a classic car from decades ago.

2018 McLaren 570S Spider: A Convertible But Not Really

McLaren calls their new 570S Spider “a convertible without compromise.” And sure, that’s just what you’d expect them to say, but convertibles inherently have many engineering compromises. That’s not to say the 570S is not a good car. It is. It is a very good car indeed.
Besides a drop top, what does the McLaren 570S Spider bring to the table?
Waxing Poetics
For starters, the 570S Spider is, to my eyes, not really a convertible. It’s sort of more than a targa, but also less than a full on convertible. It has those headrest/roll-over/buttress structures you see on a lot of hard top convertibles these days. Obviously, due more to concerns of the legal department than the design gurus. I understand why they are there, from the perspective of you don’t want a person rich enough to buy one of your cars potentially getting injured; if they can drop this kind of cash on a car, just think of the legal team they must have.
But for me, it sort of ruins the look and I would be fine if those structures were not there.
So, you get a much more open air feel than a targa set up, but not as much as you would on, say, an old Austin-Healey. Such is the state of things. The 570S Spider is hand-assembled in the unfortunate town of Woking, England, home of McLaren. It’s mainly made of carbon fiber, has a mid-engined layout, and boasts extreme performance. McLaren says the 570S Spider is the third body style in the Sports Series portfolio, lining up alongside the 570S Coupe and the 570GT, but I thought there was also a 570LT out there? I could be mistaken?

Structured Performance
The two-piece retractable roof on the Spider is constructed of lightweight composite panels, just like the rest of the bodywork. All of this is attached to the carbon fiber MonoCell II chassis at the heart of the 570S. McLaren says the Spider does not suffer any reduction in strength or stiffness or – and this is the impressive part – require any additional structural actions. Usually when you lop the top off of a car, things get floppy. It’s like taking the lid off of a shoe box. All of a sudden you can flex it and twist it a lot more (twisting and flexing fall on “The List of Bad Things Sports Cars Should Never, Ever, Do”). The fact McLaren can make a drop top that needs no additional stiffening from steel or aluminum structures speaks to their overall talent in chassis design.
The top is worked from the driver’s seat using one simple button that folds the roof and stows it beneath a hard tonneau cover. The roof can be opened or closed in just 15 seconds, at speeds up to 25 mph and, take if from me, that is so cool! Some cars with automatic tops these days, you have to be stopped dead or you can’t raise or lower it. Ugh! There’s nothing like pulling onto the street from the local burger joint and, while slowly cruising, dropping the top. There is a glass wind deflector that can, thankfully, be electrically raised or lowered at the push of a button. I know, these things keep you from getting your hair mussed, but what did you buy a convert for? Wear a hat. More wind please. McLaren also adds this odd bit of tech: “an optional sports system that features an ESG to channel exhaust sound towards the cabin, via the area beneath the tonneau cover.”
Which is nice, but also kind of odd, don’t you think?
Three new exterior colors celebrate the Spider’s introduction: Curacao Blue, Vega Blue, and Sicilian Yellow give customers a choice of 20 colors in total. Power Specs
And now, the bad news: The retractable hardtop with its operating mechanism adds 101 pounds to the weight of the Spider over the 570S Coupe. Gah! Extra weight! Bad! Evil! Bad! It’s like carrying around an invisible ballerina. Sigh.
I suppose all that extra weight is offset by the 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine nestled amidships. Said plant cranks out 562 horsepower and 443 lb-ft. of torque, giving the new 570S Spider an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 413 horsepower-per-tonne. The lump is mated to a seven-speed seamless-shift gearbox with Launch Control technology. Bottom line: standstill to 60 in 3.1 seconds, on up to 124 mph in just 9.6 seconds. Top speed is 204 mph with the roof up, which is identical to the 570S Coupe vMax. With the roof lowered the new Spider can still haul the mail, topping out at 196 mph. In case you’re strangely interested in this sort of thing, the 570S Spider gets 16 city, 23 highway, and 19 mpg combined.
The McLaren 570S Spider is available to order now, priced from $208,800 and will make its world debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, June 29th through July 2nd. Hopefully wearing a nice shiny coat of Papaya Orange paint.
