Ford, GE Healthcare to Produce 50,000 Ventilators in Michigan

Ford, GE Healthcare to Produce 50,000 Ventilators in Michigan DEARBORN, Mich., March 30, 2020 – Ford Motor Company, in collaboration with GE Healthcare, will begin producing, in Michigan, a third-party ventilator with the goal to produce 50,000 of the vitally needed units within 100 days and up to 30,000 a month thereafter as needed.

Ford will provide its manufacturing capabilities to quickly scale production, and GE Healthcare will provide its clinical expertise and will license the current ventilator design from Airon Corp. – a small, privately held company specializing in high-tech pneumatic life support products. GE Healthcare brought the Airon Corp. design to Ford’s attention as part of the companies’ efforts to scale production of ventilators quickly to help clinicians treat COVID-19 patients.

GE/Airon Model A-E Ventilator

The GE/Airon Model A-E ventilator uses a design that operates on air pressure without the need for electricity, addressing the needs of most COVID-19 patients. Its production can be quickly scaled to help meet growing demand in the U.S.

“The Ford and GE Healthcare teams, working creatively and tirelessly, have found a way to produce this vitally needed ventilator quickly and in meaningful numbers,” said Jim Hackett, Ford’s president and CEO. “By producing this ventilator in Michigan, in strong partnership with the UAW, we can help health care workers save lives, and that’s our No. 1 priority.”

Ventilator Production for COVID-19.Related: Automakers around the globe respond to the Coronavirus.Rawsonville Plant Will Produce Ventilators

Ford will initially send a team to work with Airon to boost production in Florida, and by the week of April 20, will start production at Ford’s Rawsonville Components Plant in Ypsilanti, Mich., quickly ramping up to reach full production to help meet surging demand.

Ford expects to produce 1,500 by the end of April, 12,000 by the end of May and 50,000 by July 4 – helping the U.S. government meet its goal of producing 100,000 ventilators in 100 days.

Ford’s Rawsonville plant will produce the ventilators nearly around the clock, with 500 paid volunteer UAW-represented employees working on three shifts. Airon currently produces three Airon pNeuton Model A ventilators per day in Melbourne, Fla. At full production, Ford plans to make 7,200 Airon-licensed Model A-E ventilators per week.

“From the days of Rosie the Riveter, UAW members have stepped up during difficult times in this nation’s history for the good of us all,” said UAW International President Rory Gamble. “Today’s announcement by Ford that UAW employees will make ventilators at Rawsonville is in that tradition. We are working very closely with Ford to make sure that all CDC guidelines are followed and that we are exercising an abundance of caution inside the plant. Ford and our UAW Ford members should be commended for stepping up in these very uncertain times.”

Model A-E Ventilator Production PlanRelated: Ford advances medical equipment production for COVID-19. Ongoing Effort

The Airon-licensed Model A-E ventilator is the second Ford-GE Healthcare ventilator collaboration. Last week, Ford and GE Healthcare announced a separate effort to produce a simplified ventilator design from GE Healthcare. The combined ventilator supply will help address the increasing surge demand for ventilators around the U.S in the fight against COVID-19, each well suited to meet time, production volume and patient care requirements.

“We applaud Ford for its efforts to lend its manufacturing capabilities to help quickly scale the Airon-licensed Model A-E ventilator and arm clinicians in the fight against COVID-19,” said GE Healthcare President and CEO Kieran Murphy. “Our deep understanding of the health care industry with Ford’s supply chain and production expertise will help meet the unprecedented demand for medical equipment. We continue to be encouraged by how quickly companies are coming together in innovative ways to address this collective challenge.”

GE Heathcare and Ford consulted with medical experts in determining the Airon-licensed Model A-E ventilator is well suited for COVID-19 patient care. The design is expected to meet the needs of most COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure or difficulty breathing. The ventilator is designed for quick setup, making it easy for healthcare workers to use – and can be deployed in an emergency room setting, during special procedures or in an intensive care unit, wherever the patient may be located.

Ford, along with the companies it is supporting, will provide additional updates as these special projects progress.

How Many Easter Eggs Can Your Favorite HD Truck Haul

How Many Easter Eggs Can Your Favorite HD Truck Haul If I could offer one nugget of advice for the Easter Bunny (assuming he’s reading) it would be to ditch the basket and get a truck. While the basket certinately has a novelty flare synonymous with the Easter season, hauling chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, and painted eggs is much easier with a big truck. The question is what truck would best suit the Easter Bunny, and the team at Royalty Core set out to find the answer.
Colorful Numbers
Based in Oregon, Royalty Core designs and hand-builds custom performance grilles, emblems, and headache racks. Their grilles and other unique truck parts have been featured in dozens of industry magazines, and are often part of award-winning SEMA builds. The staff came up with a math formula to get the hard boiled egg-hauling totals for the new Ford F-250, Chevy and GMC 2500 HD base models, Nissan Titan XD, and Ram 2500.
“We’re all about customizing your truck, so we thought adding something decorative to the bed would be a fun way to measure just how much these trucks can handle,” said Robb Kamp, owner of Royalty Core.
Here is Royalty Core’s brain scrambling (see what I did there) formula to determine how many eggs these trucks can haul.
One U.S. large, dyed egg weighs about 57 grams.
The egg’s density is 1.03 grams/cm3, so the egg is about 56 cm3 (3.4 cu. in.) in volume.
Round that measurement to 3.75 inches to account for the empty space around each egg.
Eat a chocolate bunny (optional).
Next, convert the volume of a truck bed from cubic feet to cubic inches, and divide by 3.75 to come up with an egg count.
Now, convert the weight of an egg in grams to pounds (57 grams = 0.126 pounds), and multiply by the egg count to get the total egg weight.
Write it all down in a table, check your work, and then brag to your friends about how much better your truck is than theirs.
“I can tell you when we started this, we weren’t sure any of the trucks could handle their max capacity of Easter eggs,” Kamp added. “That was surprising.”
The Nissan Titan XD is great for hauling hay. Easter eggs on the on the other hand? That’s a different story. Photo: Nissan North America.
And The Winners Are . . .
Weight totals mostly stayed beneath or just over each truck’s maximum payload, but one truck couldn’t haul the number of eggs that actually fit in its bed. Here’s the bed size, egg capacity, and whether or not these trucks were up to the challenge:
2018 Chevy 2500 HD – 61 cubic feet + 28,109 eggs = 8 pounds more than max payload.
2018 Ford F-250 – 65 cubic feet + 29,952 eggs = 3,774 pounds. Yes, it can haul!
2018 GMC 2500 HD – 61 cubic feet + 28,109 eggs = 8 pounds more than max payload.
2018 RAM 2500 – 58 cubic feet + 26,726 eggs = 3,368 pounds. Yes, it can haul!
2018 Nissan Titan XD – 59 cubic feet + 27,187 eggs = 516 pounds more than max payload.
So, based on this, the Easter Bunny (should) be getting either a new Ram or Ford. Chevy fans can counter by simply saying the Easter Bunny isn’t real. Nissan fans should just opt for the traditional Easter basket. It can probably haul more eggs.
Royalty Core’s graphic is below, with a version you can share on social media here. Happy Easter and sorry Nissan fans!

Brembo Showcases Next Gen, High Performance Caliper In New York

Brembo Showcases Next Gen, High Performance Caliper In New York Brembo introduced a new brake caliper for the high performance road car market during the New York International Auto Show. Brembo says the new caliper comes by way of rigorous study and a dedication to create functional products with engaging shapes. The company drew on over 45 years of Motorsport experience and over 300 racing championships as they developed the new caliper.
The goal was to create something that could match the shape, color, and exclusivity of high performance cars.
New Applications
Brembo’s engineers focused on the caliper’s geometry, reducing the mass of the areas not subjected to stress during braking. To get a better understanding on how to accomplish this, topology optimization was utilized. Topology optimization is a software tool that allowed the engineers to simulate the stiffness of the caliper and locate excess material. This application is more common for racing brakes, being used now for the first time for a cast aluminum caliper intended for road cars.
Brembo has a number of similar innovations for road-going performance cars already, including a hybrid material braking system for the 2019 Corvette ZR1.
New Benchmarks
With the minimized curves and material reduction, a weight savings of 400 grams per wheel was achieved, marking the highest ratio of weight/stiffness ever for a cast aluminum caliper for road use. Brembo says the new caliper will be used in conjunction with carbon ceramic discs and can be made in a variety of colors.
In Person
Brembo’s new caliper is equipped to the 720 horsepower Pagani Huayra, located inside their display at the New York International Auto Show, now through April 8th at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

2017 Lincoln Continental: Feeling A Little Blue

2017 Lincoln Continental: Feeling A Little Blue

Ah, Lincoln! Once the preferred brand of presidents (Kennedy) and mobsters (Corleone), Lincoln has slipped to being perpetually on the brink of joining Mercury in The Great Junkyard In The Sky. Once they were praised in rock songs by Charley Ryan, now they are mumbled about by Matthew McConaughey.
I like Lincolns. I like their big square style and almost anti-trend when it came to overall design. When Big American Cars were nothing but support systems for fins, Lincolns were big arched boxes with fantastically powerful engines.
Then again, I liked Mercury too, and thought the last genration Marauder was a great car, so what do I know?
Slate Gray Strategy
And now Lincoln, still inexplicably struggling to survive, is starting to talk seriously about color and style and fashion. There’s two things that come to mind: first, a lot of high end car companies are starting to do this. Cadillac, Rolls-Royce, even Mercedes-Benz (that staid bastion of German “style”) have taken to giving a lot of ink about color choices and semi-bespoke this and that. And secondly, I think about the Inter-Society Color Council.
Have you ever noticed that one day, usually in the spring, you see lots of consumer products that are all in similar colors? Say, slate gray for example. You see cars and toasters and sheet sets and furniture that all seem to be in the identical shade of slate gray, or in hues very closely aligned to it? That is because of the Inter-Society Color Council.
The Inter-Society Color Council is an cross-industry group that meets every so often (once a year I think) and says, “okay, what are the colors for 2023 going to be?” And then they settle that question and move on. It’s not as nefarious as you think. It’s mainly a way for companies from across the industry to figure out what paints and dyes to purchase by the rail car load so they can save money.
2017 Lincoln Black Label theme for Continental. Photo: Ford Motor Company.
Blue Shades, Black Labels
So when Lincoln says something like, “shades of blue are popular in fashion this spring – ranging from tranquil to refreshing and included as part of a palette based on nature,” and rhapsody is the signature Lincoln Black Label theme for the 2017 Lincoln Continental; the unique monochromatic interior offers rich, layered tones of blue in a multitude of textures,” that means two things:
First, Lincoln is following the lead of Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz et al. and making Fashion (with a capital “F”) a big part of what they sell, and second . . . well, about 8 years ago, a bunch of designers, color people from the Pantone Color Institute, fashionistas from Milan and Paris, design types from Silicon Valley and such were sitting around a table and said, “so . . . blue then? Blue’s gonna be it for 2017? Blue?”
And, unsurprisingly here we are when Lincoln flat out says, “versatile shades of blue, popular in spring designer collections, create the signature Black Label theme of the 2017 Lincoln Continental. Rhapsody uses a rich blend of materials to create a layered effect that complements the monochromatic tone in shades of blue. The materials are purposely arranged to flow like water: Glossier materials highlight the upper portion of the interior, while more lush touch points are lower, down to the softer, thicker carpet. Supple leather, rich Alcantara sueded cloth, mesh, and shearling combine to create an exceptionally diverse tactile experience.”
You better believe that blue is going to be a thing on upper end Lincolns for at least a year. And you’ll also start seeing lots of blues in Wal-Mart and Macy’s and such.
According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, blue is a very distinguished color. In her book “Color: Messaging and Meaning,” she writes, “blue has long been associated with serenity, respite and tranquility in nature, while industries have found the hue a perfect representation of quality and achievement.” Photo: Ford Motor Company.

Top Dollar, High Demand
But why? Why make a big, public point of following fashion for an upmarket American car company? And really, you should see Lincoln’s press release on this. It reads like a community college student’s Sophomore Artist Statement: “the range of colors evokes a spectrum of emotion and feeling . . . blue . . . blue is even considered a color of protection . . . blue is an incredibly versatile shade . . . evokes feelings of warmth and security . . . ”
Seriously, the whole corporate letter is riddled with declarations like that.
My hypothesis is that Lincoln has very little choice left at this point. Look at your “average” purchaser of an upper end luxury car. They can afford to buy a new Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar, Cadillac, or whatever every year. They can afford to take into consideration both the brand and whether it’s fashionable. If all of their friends in Gstaad this past winter were just stunning (simply stunning!) in that tone of Sage Green, and they see it as an Alcantara color option when they’re taking the S-Class in for an oil change, you know they’re going to be seriously considering it when it comes lease-end, trade-in time in 4 months.
These people can afford to be fashionable with their purchases.
Photo: Ford Motor Company.
Lincoln Lawyer
So if Lincoln can tap into that, if they can make the Continental not just a vehicular choice, but a fashion statement as well, then they might find a flowing money river and keep their company solvent. And, honestly, that would be just fine with me. Like I said, I like Lincolns. I like them precisely because they’re sort of the “anti-Cadillac.”
Any Lotto-winning yahoo from the trailer park can go and buy a Caddy, because Cadillac = money. It takes an effort of will and choice to say, “I’ll have what Matthew McConaughey’s driving.”

2019 GMC Sierra AT4: No Road, No Problem

2019 GMC Sierra AT4: No Road, No Problem GMC Sierra fans are getting a little more bite for their bark as the 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 looms on the horizon. GMC says the truck is a “unique formula” becasue it blends off-road capability with technology and refinement. The new Sierra was recently revealed amid strong sales. Earlier in March, Duncan Aldred, Global GMC Vice President, explained that SLT and Denali models account for 87 percent of the brand’s total crew cab sales.
And now a new AT4 coming is down the pipe.
Essential Equipment
This GMC special rolls out of the factory with a two-inch lift, two-speed transfer case, locking rear differential, and skid plates. The Rancho monotube shock absorbers, hill descent control, and traction select system each increase the truck’s 4×4 capability. And there’s even a suite of advanced safety features like Surround Vision, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and Front Pedestrian Braking.
The GMC Sierra AT4 comes with three different wheel and tire combos: 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, or mud terrain-rated Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, or the available 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. It’s your call.
Photo: GMC.
Power & Performance
Standard is the evergreen 5.3 V8 although the beastly 6.2 is available. GMC has not clarified horsepower or torque figures, but says both engines feature Dynamic Fuel Management. This replaces the current Active Fuel Management and differs in the sense it can shut off any number of cylinders, in a variety of combinations, to boost performance and efficiency. Dynamic Fuel Management enables the truck to operate on just one or all eight cylinders, depending on driving conditions.
GMC Sierra AT4 buyers can also opt for an all-new Duramax 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel. The Duramax and 6.2 are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The aforementioned traction select system contains preset drive modes tailored for different terrain or weather conditions. The different modes adjust the Sierra’s transmission shift points, throttle mapping, and StabiliTrak to optimize performance.
When loading up those ATVs for the wild country, the new Sierra AT4 will give adventure seekers plenty of towing tools. GMC’s ProGrade Trailering feature with a compatible smartphone app is on offer. The system includes a pre-departure checklist, trailer light test, tire pressure monitoring for the trailer, and maintenance reminders among others. There’s also a handy bird’s-eye view that shows up on the infotainment screen.
GMC’s MultiPro Tailgate features six functions and positions, second-tier loading, a standing workstation, and integrated hand grips and bumper steps. Photo: GMC.
Styling & Design
The GMC Sierra AT4 should look pretty slick coming down the road with its darker exterior finishes, black chrome, and touches of red. The front and rear bumpers and grille surround match the truck’s body color, and the C-shaped LED lighting is a nice touch. A premium high-gloss black finish was even applied to the window trim, mirror caps, and skid plate.
On the inside, drivers are treated to a darker cabin with tinted and textured aluminum finishes on the steering wheel, center stack, and sill plates. Long trips should be a breeze thanks to the leather-trimmed seats and Jet Black/Kalahari color accents. Special AT4 badging on the headrests and floormats finish off the interior treatments.
Pricing & Availability
GMC has not reveled pricing at this time. Expect the new Sierra AT4 at dealerships this fall.

Waymo & Jaguar Land Rover To Create Self-Driving Fleet

Waymo & Jaguar Land Rover To Create Self-Driving Fleet Jaguar Land Rover and Waymo announced a strategic partnership to develop self-driving I-PACE electric vehicles for Waymo’s autonomous transportation service. The companies say the collaboration will strengthen their shared goals of making safe cars and increasing mobility for all populations. Testing will begin later this year.
“While we’ve been focused at Waymo on building the world’s most experienced driver, the team at Jaguar Land Rover has developed an all-new battery-electric platform that looks to set a new standard in safety, design, and capability,” said John Krafcik, Chief Executive Officer, Waymo.
Engineers from both Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover will use the testing data to refine the technology. The companies say the partnership focuses on safety and reliability, two things that have come into question recently after an Arizona woman was struck and killed by a self-driving vehicle.
Once testing is complete, up to 20,000 I-PACE vehicles will be built during the first two years, and be available for riders of Waymo’s driverless service. In the meantime, the Waymo Jaguar I-PACE will be shown at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, which opens to the public on Friday, March 30th.

55 MPG Expected For 2019 Honda Insight

55 MPG Expected For 2019 Honda Insight The 2019 Honda Insight can finally be seen at this year’s upcoming New York International Auto Show. Honda says the 2019 Insight has robust acceleration and competitive fuel efficiency thanks to its new hybrid drivetrain. Joining the Clarity series and the 2018 Accord Hybrid, the new Insight is the fifth Honda electrified vehicle introduced over the past year. The all-new Insight will provide a fresh look for Honda’s expanding lineup of electrified vehicles.
Premium Treatments
The Insight, a compact sedan, is positioned and priced between the Civic and Accord in Honda’s lineup, and aims to offer a unique level of packaging, refinement, and efficiency. The design aims to be sleek with a low and wide stance, bold front fascia, low-profile LED headlights and taillights, sharp character lines, and a sweeping, coupe-like, roofline. On the inside, drivers will find premium cabin appointments such as a soft-touch instrument panel, ergonomically sculpted seats, a large-ish seven-inch TFT color “digital driver’s meter,” and heated, leather-trimmed seats. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also built-in.
Photo: Honda North America.
Chassis & Suspension
The new Insight rides on a comparatively long wheelbase of 106.3 inches. That means you get both a nice ride and excellent packaging for a spacious 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space. Honda accomplished this – a tricky feat to pull off in a hybrid – by placing the lithium-ion hybrid battery pack beneath the rear seats. Not only do you get a normal-sized trunk, but the Insight also comes with a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat to maximize cargo – and people – hauling flexibility.
The Insight shares the same basic platform as the tenth-gen Civic, which helps explain why the Insight has that premium compact sedan feel. The body features an aluminum hood to cut weight, while additional sound insulation in the engine bay, front fenders, front firewall, and front and rear floors help create a tranquil cabin. The new Insight also features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure.
The chassis is designed for a refined, confident, and composed driving experience according to Honda. There’s a fully-independent suspension system with a Macpherson strut front end, and a multi-link rear setup; the high-trim Touring models have liquid-sealing compliance bushings at both ends. The electric power steering is a variable-ratio dual-pinion deal and there’s an electro-servo brake system, which combines regenerative braking with the normal mechanical brake system for better stopping performance.

Power & Performance
Speaking of that hybrid system, it all starts with an efficient 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine that is coupled to a powerful electric propulsion motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. Total output is 151 horsepower and 197 lb-ft. of torque with up to 55 mpg in the city, according to Honda’s internal certification testing.
Under most conditions, the Insight operates as a series hybrid, like a railroad locomotive: The gasoline engine, connected to the generator motor, produces electricity that is supplied to the electric propulsion motor or to the 60-cell lithium-ion battery pack. There are three drive modes for the new Insight: NORMAL, ECON, and SPORT. You can pick and choose which one suits you, your mood, or the conditions. All Insights have steering wheel-mounted deceleration selectors so you can choose from three levels of regenerative braking performance as well.
Photo: Honda North America.
Availability & In Person
The 2019 Honda Insight comes in three trim levels: LX, EX, and the top-of-the-line Touring; the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assistance tech comes standard. It will arrive at Honda dealers later this year, but will be on display for the duration for the 2018 New York International Auto Show which opens to the public on Friday, March 30th.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas V6 SEL R-Line Review

2018 Volkswagen Atlas V6 SEL R-Line Review
Volkswagen has moved into the three-row family vehicle category with its all-new Atlas SUV. It offers a spacious cabin, V6 power, room for seven passengers, and an R-Line appearance package setting it apart from the standard model.
This weekend, we drove the near top-of-the-lineup, 2018 Volkswagen Atlas V6 SEL with the R-Line trim.
What’s New For 2018
The Volkswagen Atlas is entirely new for 2018 as a midsize, three-row crossover aimed at families. Built in Tennessee, alongside the Passat, the Atlas focuses on the American market, competing with the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and new Subaru Ascent.
Features & Options
The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas V6 SEL ($40,890) comes standard with simulated leather upholstery, push-button start, automatic headlights, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, rear sunshades, a blind-spot monitoring system, a larger eight-inch touchscreen interface, and the option for captain’s chairs in the second row. Tech features include remote start, automatic three-zone climate control, a power rear liftgate, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.
The SEL trim adds a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front passenger seats, and park distance control. This SEL tester came with the optional R-Line appearance package ($1,960) featuring 20-inch alloy wheels, R-Line bumpers, badging and trim, and stainless steel pedal cluster. Total MSRP including destination: $43,775.

Interior Highlights
The cabin of the new Atlas is spacious up front with lots of leg and headroom for drivers and passengers. The all-black leatherette interior is in sharp contrast to the all-white exterior of this three-row SUV. The cabin design is conservative with clean lines, and was well thought out with its logical controls and easy to understand displays.
The quality of materials lags behind the competition, but there’s still enough soft-touch materials to give an up-class feeling. In the back, there’s more hard plastic, but that’s a good thing with the kids spilling things, offering easier cleanup for parents on the go.
The second row also offers stretch-out space and taller adults won’t feel cramped on long trips. The second-row bench splits 60/40 and slides forward to grant access to the rear compartment. The third row is exceptionally roomy and we think it wins best-in-class honors. It’s even capable of transporting average-size adults. With the second and third rows folded flat, the Atlas offers 96.8 cubic feet of cargo carrying ability.
Overall, the Atlas cabin is impressively spacious and versatile, functional and easy to use, and cargo space excels.

Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs
This Atlas tester came with the optional 3.6-liter V6 engine, generating 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft. of torque. It’s mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission with Triptronic. This particular Atlas came with front-wheel drive, but Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive ($1,800) is an option for V6 models.
The Stop/Start system is standard and shuts off the engine at traffic lights to save fuel and reduce emissions. EPA fuel mileage estimates come in at 18/25 city/highway and 20 combined.
Driving Dynamics
While the raw numbers of the optional V6 would suggest this three-row family hauler would be underpowered, we found it to have more than enough grunt for most driving situations. The new Atlas has a composed attitude with smooth acceleration, solid stability at high speeds, a comfortable ride on the highway, and responsive handling in the corners.
On the road, the new Atlas feels lighter than expected for a vehicle of its size and weight. Even with the optional R-Line 20-inch wheels, our rear passengers over the weekend said it was a smooth, comfortable ride. Even on dirt roads, the fully independent suspension absorbed the bumps capably and confidently.
We pushed the Atlas hard around the tight mountain corners west of Denver, and it remained composed with little body lean. When pushed uphill at altitude, we found it had enough power and the eight-speed automatic wasn’t hunting for the right gear.
