BMW Teams With Virgin Hyperloop One For Dubai Hyperloop Passenger Capsule. They’ve rolled out the prototype design for a Dubai passenger capsule that will run in the desert fiefdom’s Virgin Hyperloop mag-lev high-speed “rail” system. I guess this means they’re serious, they being Hyperloop One, the United Arab Emirates as a country and, somehow, BMW, but when I see the words “passenger capsule” I am less than reassured.
“They” keep plugging away on this whole notion of a “hyperloop,” a vacuum tube, high-speed transit system using magnetic levitation/propulsion as the scheme to get from A to B. Sounds good. I like the idea, in general, and the engineering is quite fun.
Obstacles & Partnerships
It seems like the two biggest hurdles are land and money. Tearing up people’s property is never a good sales pitch, and building a hyperloop is not going to be cheap, but you know who has lots of empty land and bags of money? Dubai! So if you can overlook the problems with foreign workers and labor rights, religious freedom, freedom of expression, forced disappearances and torture, women’s rights, LGBT rights, and a horrendous zero tolerance drug policy, Dubai looks good!
Or at least it looked okay to Hyperloop One and BMW.
Virgin Hyperloop One says they are the only company with a fully operational hyperloop system. And yeah, that Elon Musk guy might quibble with that, but they are backed by some serious money from DP World, Caspian VC Partners, Abu Dhabi Capital Group, GE Ventures, and SNCF, yeah, the French TGV guys. BMW’s involvement is through their BMW Group Designworks creative consultancy biz. They’ve worked with Dassault Aviation, Embraer, Intermarine, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), and they also did some really swoopy airplane interiors, so that fits in here too.

Challenges & Opportunities
Once Virgin Hyperloop One, the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA), and BMW Designworks get their ducks in a row, the passenger capsule (shudder) will scoot from Dubai to Abu Dhabi (about 90 miles) in as little as 12 minutes via electromagnetic propulsion through a vacuum tube, reaching speeds up to 670 mph. They make no mention of the Gs you’d pull, either accelerating or when hitting the brakes, but let’s just go with this for now, shall we?
The main challenge for the Designworks team was creating a relaxing and engaging interior without any windows. Also, they say, “… a current requirement for passengers to be seated throughout the journey.” Ya don’t say? What, like passengers could stand?
Anyway, they’ve actually done this before, with a proposed design for an airliner’s interior sans windows. It worked pretty well as I remember, but nobody bought it. So, BMW’s Designworks had a crack at a very restrictive environment, or what could be that way, in a submarine-esque sense, and turned it into a “more personal and uplifting sensory experience that can be both memorable and enjoyable.”
Or, to be more blunt about it, they had to figure out how to stuff people into a windowless vessel and blow it down a tube at airliner speeds without anyone croaking or going crazy.

Personal Attention & Cultural Influences
That sounds like a noble goal and all that, so how do you do it? First through multidirectional, personally-controlled lighting, digital displays, and premium comfort. This creates a sense of individualized space for each passenger. For example, in first class (what, you thought this would be a single class system) adjustable leather seats feature touchscreens with brightness and color settings, allowing you to shift the light from blue to pink to set your mood. The seats come with integrated heating and cooling and, thanks to the built-in displays, personalized entertainment.
BMW Designworks says this could “create a more sophisticated and user-centered spatial experience that transcends the typical utilitarian notion of public transportation.” Could? Your confidence is everso inspiring.
BMW Designworks also took inspiration from traditional Arabic patterns to create intentional cultural references. That’s an old trick, like how they used to decorate the China Clippers with scenes of the far off and mysterious “Orient” to get you in the mood. The overall design is secured in the cultural traditions of the UAE while alluding to the country’s achievements and ambitions.

Worldwide Implementation
Look, I’m a rare guy in the gearhead world. I actually like public transportation in general and, in this case, high speed “rail” in particular. I love driving, but a lot of people don’t, and public transportation is a great way to get those people off the roads and out of my way. I like the idea of this hyperloop deal, and you’ve got to test the prototypes somewhere, so why not the Dubai to Abu Dhabi run?
After they work out the kinks, they can install version 2.0 over here or anywhere else in the world.

2018 Honda Accord 2.0T Touring Review Honda hasn’t given up on the sedan market like other American automakers, as the popular Accord four-door has been completely redesigned for 2018. Is it enough to keep up with the hot SUV and crossover segments? We wanted to find out.
What’s New For 2018
The 2018 Honda Accord is all-new, more upscale, and more refined. Built around a new chassis that utilizes more high-strength steel, it’s wider and lower than before, and it looks more stylish. Inside, it’s roomier and quieter.
This past weekend we drove the top-of-the-line, 2018 Honda Accord 2.0T Touring.
Features & Options
The 2018 Honda Accord 2.0T Touring ($35,800) is bathed in soft leathers, wood dash accents, interior noise cancellation, LED headlamps, and advanced safety features. There is a slick 8.0-inch touchscreen, leather accents, power-adjustable front seats, 10-speaker premium stereo, and navigation.
Other standard equipment includes Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port for charging and streaming audio. The Touring also gets heated seats, satellite radio, upgraded cloth upholstery, moonroof, blind-spot monitors, another USB port, and a chrome grille.
The Touring offers heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a heads-up display, wireless cellphone charging, one-touch Bluetooth connectivity, and paddle shifters.
The top Touring trim also equips the Accord with 19-inch wheels, adaptive suspension dampers, chrome exterior trim, illuminated door handles, automatic wipers, front and rear parking sensors, adjustable driving modes, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Total MSRP including destination: $36,690.

Interior Highlights
The top Touring trim gets soft-touch plastic, leather upholstery, faux-leather door inserts, and convincing wood trim on the dash. The eight-inch touchscreen sits smartly atop the dash with a sharp display and layout. We thought the infotainment system was a bit confusing at first, but did get used to it eventually. We also thought the memory-adjust driver’s seat was a bit annoying, having to adjust it each time we got in the car. The driver’s seat is lower with the redesign, however, for more headroom. The seats, in general, are taller and have more bolstering.
We found the new Accord ideally suited for four people. Five works only for short distances. The rear seats are deep, nearly one inch lower than before, and the doors open wider for easy access. The increased wheelbase allows more legroom in the rear, more than 40 inches, enough for six-footers.
We noticed how quiet the sedan is with active noise cancellation to redirect road noise and the on-board wheel resonators (a piece of material wrapped around the center of the wheel to swallow tire noise.) The trunk is massive with 16.7 cubic feet of cargo space, and with a wider opening than before.

Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs
The new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers adequate performance, but it’s the handling and ride that make the new Accord stand out. The Touring gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder making 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft. of torque. The Honda-made 10-speed automatic is standard.
EPA fuel mileage estimates come in at 22/32 city/highway and 26 combined mpg.
Driving Dynamics
The ride in the new Honda Accord feels more feels upscale, almost like a luxury car compared with the outgoing model. We took it on curvy mountain roads and it’s much more enjoyable to drive. The new 2.0-liter turbo four is quick, smooth, and connected to the 10-speed automatic making it sportier than other sedans.
The steering wheel paddle shifters add to the fun-to-drive experience, but the gear selector on the console is a bit different. It offers a series of buttons that takes some getting used to because they are unconventional, but did become easier to use with familiarization. You need to always look down to see which shift configuration you are in.
The Accord’s adaptive dampers make the newly-redesigned sedan feel composed and confident on mountain roads, while being relaxed on the open highway. The standard Honda Sensing safety suite kept us more observant to the busy traffic with lots of warnings and lights.

Conclusion
Overall, the redesigned 2018 Honda Accord 2.0T Touring moves the needle forward in the sedan segment. There’s more strengths than drawbacks making it an easy recommendation for consumers looking for a spacious, comfortable, and upscale four-door that’s not an SUV or crossover. The new Accord delivers exceptional handling, a smooth ride, a comfortable cabin, improved styling, and it’s loaded with safety features and delivers good fuel economy.

Inside The 2019 Lexus ES: Can It Compete With Germany? The latest Lexus ES recently debuted at Auto China 2018 in Beijing. That placement is significant, insofar as it is another example of just how important the Chinese market is for everyone these days. But it is also important because the ES has long been Lexus’ bread and butter in the performance sedan world.
Waxing Poetics
The Lexus ES is the Japanese car giant’s version of the BMW 3 Series, and very close in design goals to the vaunted M3. Apart from all the stuff that people negatively say about it – it’s soulless, it lacks personality, it’s not German etc. – the ES is a very good performance sedan option. Now, obviously, t’me this whole notion of “performance sedan” is borderline oxymoronic, but I understand that some people are okay with back seats and four doors and all that.
I empathize. And, with empathy, I can say that buying a Lexus ES never seems to be a bad choice.

Stance & Style
The new ES is longer (by 2.6 inches), lower (by .2 inches), and wider (by 1.8 inches) than before. The wheels are pushed nearer the corners for a two-inch longer wheelbase and wider tracks front (by .4 inches) and rear (by 1.5 inches). Sure, that will make a car look cooler, but that will get you grip in each direction: forward, side-to-side, and backward.
The seventh-generation ES has a “fast” roofline to emphasize its lower stance and slick aerodynamics. The rear goes for clean and sharply chiseled, with wraparound LED taillamps. The F SPORT models (Lexus’ answer to BMW’s M Division) have a rear spoiler, additional rear badging (natch), and a dark lower valance for a more sporty aspect. Also new are three different wheel designs: a standard 17-inch and two 18-inch wheels for the ES 350 and ES 300h, while the ES 350 F SPORT gets standard 19-inchers.
The new ES still has a bunch of those high reflectance, color-tint over chrome colors that I find quite striking. There are two new shades, Moonbeam Beige Metallic and Sunlit Green. F SPORT models get an exclusive Ultra Sonic Blue Mica 2.0 color.

Interior Treatments
The interior of the new ES is actually pretty flashy. The driver’s focus is kept on the road by placing the center display screen, instrument panel, and available heads-up display in a tight arrangement and in the driver’s field of view. Front passengers get an open and spacious environment, and despite the sleeker exterior roofline, rear passengers get plenty of comfort thanks to a lower hip point and a carefully configured headliner.
The cabin trim is an all-new kind of metallic finish developed to mimic the look of a traditional Japanese sword. They call it “Hadori” aluminum trim, and it has this groovy wave pattern to give it a three-dimensional appearance. The standard ES 350 and ES 300h will offer materials like Matte Bamboo, Linear Dark Mocha, and Linear Espresso wood to give the ES a hand-crafted appearance luxury buyers expect.
Tech & Safety
Contained within all this cool Japanese swordplay interior is enough tech and entertainment junk to keep a toddler occupied. The seventh-generation ES offers up Apple CarPlay, Siri Eyes Free voice control, and Amazon Alexa. There’s on-board Wi-Fi as part of the optional navigation system that includes a 12.3-inch wide dashboard display.
There’s also tons of on-board superfluous safety stuff that most blockheads will need.

Chassis & Suspension
The chassis is just as modern and high-tech as one would expect. Pinned to the new GA-K chassis platform are various grades of high-tensile steel to reduce weight, an all-new multi-link rear suspension, and rack-mounted electric power steering. F SPORT models offer an Adaptive Variable Suspension with adjustable dampers at each corner with 650 levels of damping.
Power & Performance
All ES 350s are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that develops 302 horsepower and 267 lb-ft. of torque, both a bump from previous models. The ES 350 gets a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission that uses an ultra-thin torque converter and a multi-plate lock up clutch to efficiently transfer power to the front wheels (sadly).
The ES 300h comes with Lexus’ fourth-gen hybrid drive system, combining an Atkinson cycle 2.5-liter four-banger with a lighter, more compact, more power dense electric motor and self-charging hybrid system. Add those up, and you get 215 total system horsepower and a preliminary estimate of 44 mpg combined.
Pricing & Availability
The 2019 Lexus ES goes on sale this September with pricing info due closer to that time.

Mercedes-Benz Overcomes Having To Read The Owner’s Manual The owner’s manual, that collection of writings concealed forever in the glovebox, might now be destined for the great hall of automotive fossils. It used to be sound advice: when getting a new car, read the owner’s manual. Does anybody do that anymore? Seems unlikely today.
In a “get with the times, man” approach, Mercedes-Benz last year revealed a pilot program called “Ask Mercedes.” The program allows customers to explore and learn about their Benz’s features with augmented reality technology that supplements a camera image with computer-generated content.
What a time to be alive.

Through the augmented reality program, customers receive information in real time, without having to decipher the archaic texts within a paper-inspired operator’s manual. Owners of a 2018 E-Class or S-Class (non-AMG) use the application to “get to know their vehicle.” The automaker says by using a smartphone camera, owners can “discover interior features and functions by scanning controls and displays.”
Say the phone camera is aimed at the dashboard, steering wheel or center console – that’s when augmented reality beacons are automatically superimposed onto the controls and displays shown in the camera image. Clicking or taping on a beacon further explains the function by way of text, photos, and video. Customers can even directly link to that section of a digital owner’s manual if they want more information.

Practical Uses
This feature would be handy for a complex navigation system, an odd-looking “what’s that do” button, or as a refresher that turn signals are there for a reason. Seriously, point the camera at the little blinker switch just off the steering wheel, then watch the instructional video on how to use it.
If you have questions, follow this procedure: access the “junk and stuff” drawer in the kitchen, usually populated with an assortment of pens, pill holders, batteries, rubber bands, tape, etc. Remove scissors. Open wallet. Remove driver’s license. Hold both scissors and license over medium-sized trash can. Proceed to operate scissors until driver’s license has been successfully committed inside the trash receptacle.

Availability & Expansion
The pilot of “Ask Mercedes” launched late last year, with the augmented reality functions first available for the 2018 E-Class. The company says the recently added capabilities for the 2018 S-Class will gradually expand in the coming months to other models. “Ask Mercedes” is available in the Apple App Store and is supported on the iPhone 6 running iOS 10 or higher.
“We are creating a personalized customer experience that goes well beyond the vehicle,” explained Britta Seeger, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales. “With innovative services such as ‘Ask Mercedes’ we are further expanding our digital ecosystem.”

2018 Hagerty Hot List of Future Collector Cars

2018 Hagerty Hot List of Future Collector Cars It’s a known fact that new vehicles will start losing value as soon as you drive off the lot. This is the reason why some prefer to lease rather than buy, especially luxury vehicles that are prone to lose half their value in less than three years.
Prime examples are the Cadillac CTS, Volkswagen CC, BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The aforementioned vehicles are expected to lose approximately 58 to 64 percent of their value in a 36-month period. While this is good news for used car buyers, it’s a different story for potential new car owners.
Thankfully, the 2018 Hagerty Hot List of Future Collector Cars is here to save the day. Hagerty is one of the largest membership, insurance, and media organizations dedicated to collectible vehicles and car owners globally. Their list is home to 10 new vehicles that are projected to be highly collectible 30 years from now, and each have an MSRP less than $100,000.
These vehicles are expected to retain their value in the distant future. Depreciation be damned!

1. Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE ($69,995)
This beastly muscle car is equipped with a supercharged V8 good for 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft. of torque. This Camaro is also equipped with the 1LE Track Package which includes aluminum-bodied spool-valve dampers and inverted struts for superior handling. You also get creature comforts such as heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, and a heads-up display.
The best thing about the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is the price. It is a perfectly-tuned track car that can outperform exotic supercars for half the price. While this muscle car is clearly not designed for mundane city driving, Chevrolet left no stone unturned to come up with a brilliant track machine.
And to think it started out on a Cadillac platform.

2. Dodge Challenger SRT Demon ($85,000)
The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is the world’s fastest production car. It comes equipped with a burly 840 horsepower supercharged Hemi V8 that sounds like an angry rhinoceros on steroids. It also comes with Bilstein adaptive dampers that transfer weight rearward as you attack the drag strip.
The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon can scoot from zero to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds, and devour the quarter mile in under 10 seconds at an average speed of 140 mph. This future collectible achieves a miserly 10/18 city/highway mpg with the standard eight-speed automatic transmission.
At this point, who cares about fuel economy? We want one. Badly.

3. Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk ($86,000)
What? An SUV on the Hagerty Hot List? Absolutely! The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is a family vehicle that can outrun sports cars and tuned vehicles on the dragstrip. This SUV is equipped with a 6.2-liter V8 that churns out a breathtaking 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft. of torque, and it comes standard with all-wheel drive.
The yellow brake calipers are a sight for sore eyes, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is more than just performance. It offers a plush and comfortable cabin with enough seats for a medium-sized family of track junkies. It can also tow 7,200 lbs. and comes with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and numerous other connectivity features.

4. Jeep Wrangler ($26,995)
No vehicle in the same price range can match the off-road prowess of the Jeep Wrangler. The top-of-the-line Rubicon comes with improved ground clearance and locking front and rear differentials that allow you to traverse any type of terrain. It also comes with the UConnect infotainment system with either a seven-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen display.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler features a 3.6-liter V6 mated to either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. While refinement and wind noise are still issues, the Jeep Wrangler is destined to remain an iconic name in the years to come.

5. Audi RS 3 ($54,900)
The Audi RS 3 is finally here in North America. While critics are quick to point out the astronomical price tag for such a small car, they failed to consider the awesome five-cylinder turbocharged motor and Quattro all-wheel drivetrain. The 2.5-liter turbo engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic that enables the RS 3 to hit 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, quicker than the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG and BMW M2.
Think of the Audi RS 3 as a pocket rocket with a luxury price tag. It may not be the most affordable performance vehicle you can buy, but it is one of the rare few that offers an opulent and comfortable cabin for everyday usability and drivability.

6. Porsche 718 Cayman/Boxster GTS ($79,800)
The 718 Cayman and Boxster GTS feature Porsche’s Torque Vectoring and Active Suspension Management systems, the Sport Chrono package, sport-style exhaust, and 20-inch alloy wheels. But the crème of the crop is the bigger turbocharger that enables both vehicles to achieve higher boost pressures and 15 more horsepower than the Cayman S or Boxster S.
The GTS models of the Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster are equipped with a 2.5-liter flat-four that produces 365 horsepower. The styling on both cars is still up for debate, but with a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 7 minutes and 40 seconds for the Cayman GTS (which is 2 seconds faster than the Cayman S), the styling should be the least of your concerns.

7. Lexus LC 500 ($92,500)
The Lexus LC 500 is highly regarded as the most exciting Lexus next to the magnificent, but outrageously expensive, LFA. While this car is not as performance-oriented as the LFA, it comes equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 engine that is good for 471 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm. It also comes with a throaty and aggressive exhaust system that gave us goosebumps at idle. Once you step on the throttle, all chaos breaks loose. This is one of the finest, most desirable, and most luxurious grand touring cars you can buy this year.
What we really like about the Lexus LC 500 is the comfortable ride and leather-covered cabin. We had some issues with the trademarked spindle grille design (which looks like the face of an expensive electric razor) but looks are entirely subjective. If you want a fast, luxurious, and aggressive-sounding cruiser, you can’t go wrong with the Lexus LC 500.

8. Subaru WRX STI Type RA ($48,995)
Purists might scoff at the newfound refinement of the current Subaru WRX STI. However, the Type RA begs to differ. This car is limited to only 500 individually numbered vehicles which makes it an instant classic in our book. It also helps that it’s tuned in the spirit of the Subaru 2017 Nürburgring record attempt, which was the fastest lap ever achieved by a production four-door sedan at the time.
The Subaru WRX STI Type RA benefits from intensive weight reduction to deliver unparalleled performance. This includes a carbon fiber roof panel to further reduce weight while lowering the center of gravity. The car also benefits from a new cold air intake, high-flow performance exhaust, retuned ECU, and stronger pistons to deliver 310 horsepower. Of course, no limited-production STI is complete without the ridiculous-looking adjustable STI carbon fiber trunk spoiler.

9. Kia Stinger GT ($38,350)
The Kia Stinger GT is South Korea’s interpretation of a muscle car. It is also engineered to run with more expensive European exotics while providing a comfortable and refined driving environment. The base model receives a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four but the GT comes with a more powerful 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 that churns out 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft. of torque.
Truth be told, we would consider buying or leasing the Kia Stinger GT even if it weren’t included on the Hagerty Hot List. This car offers lots of creature comforts for both the driver and passengers. It also helps that it looks the part as well. Kia has a real winner here.

10. Honda Civic Type R ($34,100)
Ah yes, the Honda Civic Type R. This is the first Civic Type R sold in the United States. It all starts with a turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter inline-four that cranks out 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque. There’s none of the instant gratification and raucousness of the old-school B18 VTEC motor from the Integra Type R, but the tractable nature and smooth power delivery is enough to revive the driving enjoyment of tuned 90’s era Civics.
While the Civic Type R is not entirely all-new, the juvenile styling was expected given the capabilities of the car. We also found the exhaust note to be less than satisfying as the engine approaches higher revs. Still, this is a future classic worth considering.

The Brabham BT62 Might Have Just Declared War On Everyone Well this is a nasty looking piece of kit right here. Greetings to the new Brabham BT62. Yes, it is (sadly) a track-only car, but what a car it is. The last time something with “Black” Jack Brabham’s name on it turned up on a track, it was a bad day for the opposition. If the BT62 holds true to form, and you drive a Ferrari FXX or a McLaren P1 or Senna, you’re right to be worried.
Jack Attack
To get you up to speed here, and I feel sorry for those that have not heard the stories, Jack Brabham was an Australian racer and race car builder from the mid-century. First guy to race a mid-engined car at the Indy 500? Jack Brabham. First (and so far only) guy to win a grand prix championship in a car he built himself? Jack Brabham. First Australian GP winner? Jack Brabham. First Australian GP World Champion? Jack Brabham. Guy who snapped a throttle cable at Zandvoort, drove off to the side, and used wire from a fence to build a hand throttle and finish the race? Jack Brabham.
He got the nickname “Black” Jack because of his racing style: fast, uncompromising, declarative, and if you dropped your guard an inch, Brabham was through. Try to mess him up on the track, and he’d be on you like a leather sack filled with buckshot; a Blackjack. He also had the best motto: “When the green flag drops, the bullshit stops.” In other words, you can talk a big game all you want, and you’re car can look as impressive as they come sitting in the pits, but when the race starts, all that hot air is done away with and then we’ll know who is the quickest.
And the brand new BT62? How does that fare? Dunno yet, haven’t seen it run. But the specs? Hoo boy!

No Nonsense Nomenclature
This is all David Brabham’s deal. He would be Jack’s son, former racer, Le Mans winner, current and future Australian, and, like his pop, a nice guy (unless you cross him on the track). The Brabham BT62 – the B stands for Brabham and the T for Ron Tauranac, Jack’s engine builder/chassis designer/chief engineer from back in the day – boasts a power-to-weight ratio of 720 horsepower per ton, a dry weight of just 2,142 lbs., and is propelled by a Brabham naturally-aspirated 5.4-liter V8.
That’s right, they are even building their own V8 plant in-house. You think this is a kit car? Slow and stupid, ain’t ya?
Power & Performance
Like all Brabhams before it, the BT62 is designed from the ground up to be simple, robust, reliable, flexible, and fast. A complete “clean sheet of paper” design, the Brabham BT62 is mid-engined, with the power driving the rear wheels via a rear-mounted dog-box transmission. Like I said, the BT62 tips the scales around 2,140 lbs. (think Miata) and possesses a strong power-to-weight ratio. That Brabham-built V8 engine cranks out 700 plus horsepower and 492 ft-lb. of torque. Add to the mix the BT62’s aggressive aerodynamic package, which delivers over 2,600 lbs. of downforce, and you can see where this is heading.
If it’s heading there too fast, not to worry, the carbon/carbon disc brakes with six-piston calipers front and rear will “whoa” you up. The BT62 is shod with Michelin racing slick tires and, to make maters worse for those of you racing against it, Brabham Automotive is a technical partner with Michelin and further developing racing tires.

Avenged Seventyfold
Of course they are not making very many of them. The Brabham BT62 will be limited to just 70 cars to celebrate the 70 years since Sir Jack Brabham (oh yeah, The Queen gave him a Knighthood a while back) launched his racing career in Australia in 1948. The first 35 cars will be liveried just like the F1 cars in that delicious green and gold paint scheme. And, as the owner of a Brabham BT62, you also gain entry into a tailored driver development and experience program to enable you to “fully exploit the performance potential of this exceptional car.”
In other words, you get driving school along with your purchase.
Speaking of: How much? Base price of £1m or 1.4 million bucks or about the same as dedicated track cars from Ferrari, McLaren, and such. First deliveries are expected later this year.

War On Everyone
The only thing I dislike about the Brabham BT62 is that you can’t hang a license plate on it. But what I really love about it is this sentence from the press materials: ” . . . the company’s ultimate goal is to see the iconic Brabham name return once again to compete on the race track, with the 24 Hours of Le Mans firmly in its sights.”
What’s that old phrase? Those who do not remember history are doomed to get beaten like a drum on the race track . . . something like that.

2018 Ford Explorer: Blue Oval’s Anchor For Promising SUV Projections?

From the “Water is Wet/Pope is Catholic” file, Ford says to expect continued growth in SUV sales. They also announced what the updates for the Ford Explorer will be in 2018, but first let’s talk about these sales projections. Look, every company on the planet says the future looks great. We’re going to be making money by the train car load next fiscal year, yadda-yadda-yadda.
But in Ford’s case, they might be right.
Trending Data
For starters, check this out: According to Ford, not only will the SUV segment continue to grow, but it will actually account for more than 45 percent of the non-premium U.S. retail industry in the next five to seven years. 45 percent. That’s nearly half of the non-premium (i.e. rich folks cars) segment being populated by truck like SUV things.
It seems this trend, as 90% of the trends these days, are being driven by millennials. 35- to 44-year-olds buy more mid and large SUVs than any other given demographic, and millennials are anticipated to join this SUV-loving group even more as they age. Baby boomers (the first millenials in a way, if you care to think about it) are already buying nearly 30 percent of small SUVs as is. And boomers are projected to lean even more heavily into SUVs as they march on up the population pyramid. Even Generation X is getting in on the SUV action.
These numbers make Ford happy. They already sell a ton of trucks and SUVs, so a bigger pie means more sales for Ford. Dearborn is so psyched about what lies ahead for SUVs, they have plans to add five all-new ones to their North American lineup by 2020.

Cornerstone Connectivity
Ford is planning on the upcoming 2018 Explorer to champion this segue into even more SUVs on the road. The 2018 Explorer has a freshened front, new rear styling details, and even better technology. So the transitional model year gets slathered in tech goodies and gee-gaws such as an available 4G modem with a new standard Wi-Fi hotspot for up to ten devices, plus Ford’s latest SYNC 3 infotainment system.
SYNC Connect also allows owners to “connect” with the Explorer remotely using FordPass. Drivers can start, lock, unlock, and locate their vehicle from almost anywhere. I know that sounds superfluous in a lot of ways, but consider living in up-state New York or Mobile, Alabama. Sounds like being able to fire up your Explorer and get the interior heated in February or chilled in August via your smartphone is a good idea, no? Oh, and FordPass also stores important vehicle diagnostic information which is also handy.
All of this stuff on the 2018 Explorer joins existing high tech perks such as enhanced active park assist and electric power-assisted steering. These features help drivers with parallel and perpendicular parking but there is also park-out assist, which helps drivers pull out of parallel parking spots; and intelligent all-wheel drive with a Terrain Management System that sends power where needed. And yeah, I don’t know why on Earth you’d need something to help you pull out of parallel parking spots (isn’t that just reverse gear?) but hey, the new Explorer’s got it.
Safety tidbits? Oh my yes!

Safety & Security
The 2018 Ford Explorer offers a newly available Safe and Smart Package that combines a whole bunch of stuff you should be able to do for yourself, but Americans seem to thrive on having these days. There is adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support that uses the onboard radar to sense any moving vehicles immediately ahead, and change cruising speed if necessary. A Blind Spot Information System also uses radar to trigger a warning when another vehicle is in your blind spot. Cross-traffic alert is almost the same thing as the blind spot deal. It also uses radar to alert you to oncoming traffic when backing out of a parking space.
The lane-keeping system automatically detects left- and right-hand lane markers using the front camera system. A vibration in the steering wheel alerts the driver if the vehicle begins to drift out of their lane. The system can also provide steering torque to help guide the vehicle back into the lane if needed. I’m sorry, but isn’t that what the Bott’s dots on the highway are already there for? How many warnings do you need?
In a blast from the past, the 2018 Ford Explorer also has auto high-beams. It uses windshield-mounted cameras to automatically switch between high and low beams when oncoming traffic is detected. Which is cool and all that, but I remember my grandfather’s 1970s era Caddy having the same thing, so yay for automatically not blinding oncoming traffic, but this ain’t exactly new.

Power & Performance
You get your choice of three different engines with the 2018 Explorer: the 2.3-liter, 280 horsepower EcoBoost four-cylinder with 310 lb-ft. of torque, or the 365 horsepower 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 with 350 lb-ft of torque. The latter is for the Explorer Sport and Platinum which have new quad exhaust tips. For some reason Ford doesn’t say what the third engine choice is. I’m sincerely hoping it’s a secret quad turbo V16 plant cranking out over 2,000 horsepower at the wheels.
I also sincerely hope that Angelina Jolie left Brad Pitt because she could sense my raw masculine sexuality, but somehow I feel that isn’t true either.
Exterior Colors & Availability
And not to leave out the truly goofy options, customers have four new exterior color choices with the 2018 Ford Explorer: Burgundy Velvet Tinted Clearcoat, Cinnamon Glaze, Platinum Dune Tricoat, and Blue Metallic. What is goofy there is, of course, the “Cinnamon Glaze” option. Dunno, maybe Ford is going for the off-duty cop market or the Cinnabon manager market but Cinnamon Glaze, really?

2018 Volvo XC60 Production Underway

2018 Volvo XC60 Production Underway

It won’t be long before the 2018 Volvo XC60 arrives in the showroom. Production of the vehicle is underway at Volvo’s Torslanda plant in Sweden. The first customer-bound XC60 that rolled off the line was a T5 Inscription AWD in Crystal White. The new XC60 replaces a prior model that held its own for nine years, becoming the top premium mid-sized SUV in Europe with nearly a million units sold globally.
The XC60 today represents around 30 percent of Volvo’s total global sales.
Solid Foundations
The XC60 is the fourth Volvo based on the automaker’s patented SPA vehicle architecture. Volvo developed it in-house and introduced it with the 2016 XC90. SPA allows Vovlo’s engineers to seamlessly integrate a wide range of vehicle systems and technology, be it performance or safety related. The latter is a huge part of Volvo’s reputation and SPA utilizes its high-strength steel construction accordingly.
Furthermore, SPA-related investments in Sweden have provided thousands of new jobs in production and research and development.

Performance Tech
Building on their safety legacy, Volvo added Steer Assist to the 2018 XC60’s City Safety system. Steer Assist literally “assists” the other vehicle safety systems. Oncoming Lane Mitigation, for example, uses Steer Assist to help prevent head-on collisions. The Blind Spot Indication system also uses Steer Assist to help prevent lane-changing collisions. Other available safety features include Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous program that handles steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked roads up to 80 mph.
A T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid tops the new XC60’s powertrain range, delivering 407 horsepower and hitting 62 mph in a mere 5.3 seconds. Inside, the new CleanZone four-zone climate system removes pollutants, dust, and particles – a necessity if you are like me and have allergies. Expect the latest infotainment and connectivity too, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.
Pricing & Availability
No word on pricing yet for the 2018 Volvo XC60, although the vehicle is gradually becoming available for order as production increases.
“This is a proud day for everyone at the plant,” said Magnus Nilsson, Vice President of the Torslanda plant. “We have worked hard in recent weeks and months to prepare Torslanda for this latest new Volvo model, and now we are ready to start delivering new XC60s to customers.”

Waymo Expands Self-Driving Program With FCA, Seeking Applicants

FCA US LLC is delivering 500 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans to Waymo to boost the tech company’s autonomous driving program. The announcement follows the already 100 Pacifica minivans sent to Waymo in the second half of last year. Production for these additional 500 will begin next month and upon delivery, Waymo will install their self-driving technology.
Proponents say autonomous driving can prevent many of the 1.2 million traffic-related deaths recorded yearly worldwide. 94 percent of these are caused by human error.
Powerful Partnership
As autonomous vehicles loom on the horizon with some concern and scrutiny, the relationship between FCA and Waymo has proven beneficial.
“The collaboration between FCA and Waymo has been advantageous for both companies as we continue to work together to fully understand the steps needed to bring self-driving vehicles to market,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.
John Krafcik, Waymo’s Chief Executive Officer, commented specifically on the vehicle of choice.
“The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan is a versatile vehicle for our early rider program, which will give people access to our self-driving fleet to use every day, at any time,” he said.

Community Efforts
Waymo’s early rider program in Phoenix, Arizona gives area residents a chance to experience a self-driving vehicle on their daily commutes. Waymo plans on using the feedback to enhance how they design future self-driving technology.
“This collaboration is helping both companies learn how to bring self-driving cars to market, and realize the safety and mobility benefits of this technology,” Krafcik said.
The Pacifica’s electrical, powertrain, chassis, and structural components were modified to accommodate Waymo’s self-driving technology. The programs Waymo uses were refined through nearly 3 million miles of on-road testing and billions of miles in simulation. Waymo and FCA co-located a select group of engineers at a facility in southeastern Michigan to oversee development. Extensive testing was carried out at FCA’s Chelsea Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan, and Arizona Proving Grounds in Yucca, Arizona, as well as Waymo test sites in California.
“The addition of 500 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans is a further acknowledgement of the hard work put forth by both engineering teams,” Marchionne said.
The early rider application window is open now for those in the Phoenix metropolitan area, including Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert. There is no cost to apply.
