2019 Ford Edge ST: The SUV Time Machine

2019 Ford Edge ST: The SUV Time Machine Throughout the year at Sioux Falls Ford, we received training on new vehicles before Ford released them. A specialist from Dearborn would arrive in the morning, with said vehicle, and put us sales guys through a day-long session of training and test driving. We learned everything about the forthcoming vehicle so we were prepared to answer any questions future customers might have.
Those were the good old days.
Showroom Shine
Looking back, a few vehicles from those training sessions really stood out: The 2010 Raptor with its suspension, the 2011 F-150 with its EcoBoost engines, and the 2010 Edge Sport with its 22-inch wheels. After training on the Edge that day, we held a public test drive event in the evening. Upper management invited many of our customers in for a chance to see and drive the Edge Sport. We took a few orders that night and enjoyed showing our customers this slick, new vehicle we received training on earlier in the day.
The next morning, I was on first shift, meaning I was usually at my desk by 7:45 before we opened at 8:00. As I was unpacking my things for the day, I glanced across the showroom and caught the morning sun bouncing off the Sport Blue Metallic paint and 22-inch chrome wheels. Since it was a demo vehicle for training, that particular Edge Sport was due to leave us, but for the time being, it was the perfect compliment to the Shelby Mustang sitting only a few feet away.
I get similar vibes from the 2019 Edge ST, Ford’s first SUV to be tuned by Ford Performance.

Power & Performance
The Edge ST features a specially-tuned 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine, pumping out 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic Ford notes as “quick-shifting.” Toggle over to Sport Mode and the Edge ST is suddenly more aggressive, holding gears up to the redline and resonating the exhaust notes a little further. All-wheel drive, a sport-tuned suspension, and an available performance braking package give the Edge ST a little extra “edge” on the road.
Exterior Styling
Just like the 2010 Edge Sport, the 2019 Edge ST catches the eye with its mesh grille, side skirts, redesigned hood, and dual exhaust ports. To enhance curb appeal, 21-inch wheels are available, while LED headlamps are standard.
Interior Design
Edge ST drivers will enjoy seats that offer additional bolstering, especially on longer trips. The center console is redesigned and the rotary gearshift dial reduces clutter and frees up space. The wireless charging pad, built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, and Sync 3 are nice upgrades for those who like having the latest tech. Music lovers will enjoy the available 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Safety & Security
The Edge ST features an array of advanced safety systems, two of which really stand out. Post Collision Braking reduces the likelihood of secondary impacts by applying moderate brake pressure when an initial collision is detected. Evasive Steering Assist, designed to operate at city and highway speeds, uses radar and a camera to detect slower-moving and stationary vehicles. Once detected, steering support is provided to help maneuver around a vehicle if a collision is imminent.
Manufacturing & Availability
The 2019 Ford Edge ST will be built at the Oakville Assembly Plant in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Expect to see the Edge ST at Ford dealerships this summer.

2018 Ford F-Series Super Duty Limited: Big Capability, Big Price

2018 Ford F-Series Super Duty Limited: Big Capability, Big Price

Ford Motor Company recently unveiled their latest F-Series Super Duty variant, a model they say ” sets the new luxury standards for high-end heavy-duty truckers.” The top variant, the F-450 Limited, is now Ford’s largest luxury vehicle, and it’s capable of towing over 30,000 lbs., the equivalent of an F-35 fighter plane.
Just in case you need to move one.
Royal Treatment
Inside, Ford pours on the comfort with custom Camelback two-tone leather seats, a premium stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a Miko suede headliner. Other luxury elements include the hand-finished dark ash wood trim, a panoramic moonroof with retractable shade, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and special badging.
“Imagine opening the door to your humidor and sinking into your favorite leather lounge chair – that’s the sensation the new Super Duty Limited inspires,” said Aileen Barraza, Ford Design Manager.
Each Limited truck has a dedicated serial number laser-etched on the center console. A class-exclusive, flat rear load floor, complete with a fold-up locking storage feature makes for easy cargo hauling. Exterior flair includes a unique, twin-bar satin grille with chrome accents and quad-beam LED lights.

Power & Performance
Ford’s increasingly evergreen 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 will motivate the new Limited trim in either a single- or dual-rear-wheel configuration. The Blue Oval is quick to point out their list of segment-exclusive features like the Blind Spot Information System with trailer coverage, adaptive cruise control and steering, and forward collision warning with brake support.
“The Super Duty lineup is a win for all of our customers, from successful ranchers to contractors to RV owners,” said Todd Eckert, Ford Truck Group Marketing Manager.
Market Demands
A new 4×4 Super Duty Limited is north of $80,000, with the F-250 Limited coming in at $80,835. The F-350 Limited beeps across the scanner at $82,010 and the F-450 carries a window sticker of $87,100. A fully-loaded Super Duty Limited 4×4 will tip the cash register at almost $95,000. Unfortunately, Ford takes a tone we don’t necessarily agree with when addressing the price point.
“Customers who check every option box can top one out for as much as $94,455,” a recent press release from Dearborn, Michigan reads.
Perhaps we are being critical, but it seems as if Ford is bragging a little. The metrics, however, support not only the addition of the Limited trim, but the price too. More than 50 percent of Super Duty retail sales this year are concentrated in the top trims, the Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum. It’s only fitting the Limited is the next choice for Ford customers.
“We created this new truck to answer the call for even more premium choices in the Super Duty range as we see more and more truck customers trending to more premium models,” Eckert added. “Super Duty Limited is the most luxurious and advanced heavy-duty pickup truck ever created by Ford for accomplished buyers with appetites for the high life and hard-earned dollars to match.”

The Ford Super Duty Limited crew cab arrives this winter.

2017 Toyota Sienna Limited Premium AWD Review

2017 Toyota Sienna Limited Premium AWD Review

The Toyota Sienna is all about family-oriented features, versatility, interior space, and reliability. Upper trims add even more entertainment and accessibility equipment. If you live in a cold climate, the Sienna offers all-wheel drive for all-weather capability too. It’s one of the best family haulers on the market. Here’s what an upper trim level brings to the party: this week we drove the top-of-the-line, 2017 Toyota Sienna Limited Premium AWD.
What’s New For 2017
The 2017 Toyota Sienna gets direct fuel injection and a new 8-speed automatic transmission. The rest of its features and options carry over unchanged.
Features & Options
The 2017 Toyota Sienna Limited Premium AWD ($47,310) comes loaded with standard equipment like power sliding doors, power front seats, and a 7-inch touchscreen. All-wheel drive is also included along with 18-inch wheels. Inside it gets leather seating surfaces and heated front seats. A sport mesh grille, fog lamps, LED taillights, and smoked accents decorate the exterior.
The Sienna Limited Premium, with its seven-passenger seating, adds navigation, an upgraded 10-speaker stereo, chrome exterior accents, and a dual moonroof. Other features included rain-sensing wipers, xenon headlights, automatic high beams, rear-seat entertainment, and upgraded leather for the third row. It also came with a few extra family options like wireless headphones, a first aid kit, roof rack crossbars, all-season floor mats, and universal tablet holder. Total MSRP including destination: $50,769.

Interior Highlights
Since families spend so much time inside the cabin, it’s the most important thing to look at, and the new Sienna doesn’t disappoint. The family hauler offers a contemporary interior appearance and convenient layout for adults and kids. You will find plenty of room in this spacious minivan with exceptional comfort for all riders.
Up front, the sweeping, contoured dashboard is attractive and most importantly, functional for the driver. Controls are placed conveniently on the driver’s side and instruments are large and easy-to-read. Audio and 3-zone climate controls can be easily reached by the front passenger. The leather-trimmed seats are comfortable for longer trips and offer plenty of support. The 4.2-inch touchscreen display comes with full color graphics and can be easily seen from the driver’s seat.
It’s easy to get in-and-out of the back with the Sienna Limited’s power rear sliding doors that open up to the second row. Captain’s chairs were standard with our all-wheel drive tester. The chairs slide forward and all the way back, opening up lots of room to stretch out when you aren’t using the third-row seats.
There’s plenty of cargo space with the second-row seats folded and pushed forward, and the third-row seats folded. It offers up an abundant 117.8 cubic feet of cargo-carrying ability. Behind the third-row seats is 39.1 cubic feet of cargo space, and the deep well in the floor can keep a massive amount of groceries from sliding all over the back, unlike most SUVs.

Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs
The 2017 Toyota Sienna gets an upgrade to its 3.5-liter V6 engine in the form of direct fuel injection, hiking horsepower by 30. The upgraded engine now develops 296 horsepower and comes coupled to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Even with the increased power, EPA fuel economy estimates have increased with the family hauler now getting 18/24 city/highway and 20 combined mpg.
Driving Dynamics
The Sienna minivan is built for comfort, not performance. All families care about is that it will get up to highway speed without an issue, that it’s safe, and it’s maneuverable in the city. The Sienna scores well every time. It has good visibility for the driver, and there’s a backup camera for those times you can’t see behind you.
The Sienna isn’t all that quiet on the highway, but you won’t care when you crank up the upgraded JBL sound system with 10 speakers and a subwoofer. The kids won’t mind either as they will be watching the Blu-ray rear seat entertainment with their wireless headphones on. Shifts are smooth and practically imperceptible from the new 8-speed automatic. This model comes with all-weather capability with its Active Torque Control AWD system, which means you won’t have any trouble getting around this winter when the snow flies.
Conclusion
The Toyota Sienna Limited Premium AWD is not the cheapest minivan on the market, but you will be getting copious interior space, a comfortable place for you and the kids to spend time, convenience, versatility, and Toyota’s reputation for reliability.

2019 BMW X7: The Beast From The East

2019 BMW X7: The Beast From The East The 2019 BMW X7 is many things. Small is not one of them.
BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle offers two engines and an endless list of optional features.
The new X7 will be the fifth model produced at BMW’s Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina.
“Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! And since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!”
Yeah, I cribbed that one, and yeah, the new 2019 BMW X7 is b-i-g big. Do we really need this Ahab? Our roads will be better because of this? What do you think?
Get the harpoon.
Bigger Is Best
Yup, it’s big. How big? 17 feet long, six and a half feet wide, and standing a tick under six feet tall. Surprisingly, the weight is “only” 5,600 lbs. I say only because I was expecting something that looks like a vanadium steel ingot on wheels to tip the scales in the five-digit range. So yeah, coming in at 2.25 Miatas is a victory.
Do we need this? Of course we do. We are, after all, Americans. We like ’em big and roomy, built like and sized like a Sherman tank with the survivability to match. And boy, does the 2019 BMW X7 deliver on that.
Three rows of seats for the passengers in the back (i.e. The Kids) offer up acres of roominess. Expansive surfaces abound, large trim pieces are everywhere, and other surfaces are framed with electroplated accents, including the instrument panel and center console. You got this much canvas to play with, might as well paint on all of it Jackson.
The center console is where everything lives. Literally everything: iDrive Controller, gear selector, climate settings, Driving Experience Control switches, and the settings for the air suspension and optional off-road modes. There’s enough room in that console alone to nail a golden Guinea with space left over.

You got this much canvas to play with, might as well paint on all of it Jackson.Click To TweetPacking Punches
Okay, you ask, so this panzer of a family truck is nice inside, but it’s a BMW, what about power? Becalm yourselves, for the X7 comes with a choice of two engines: A 4.4-liter V8, found in the X7 xDrive50i, and a high-revving 3.0-liter inline six-banger, found in the X7 xDrive40i. Both gasoline mills feature TwinPower Turbo technology, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. Each system is exclusive to BMW.
The V8 cranks out 479 lb-ft. of torque and 456 horsepower, good enough for a zero to 60 mph time of 5.2 seconds. The sixer has 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft. of torque on tap, adding up to a zero to 60 mph of 5.8 seconds. Yeah, you won’t be out dragging a new Corvette with this guy, but those are pretty good times for something this size.
Both BMW X7 engines come mated to an improved version of the company’s eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The transmission has wider ratios and new electronics to increase overall efficiency.
Newly-designed heat plates in the X7’s 4.4-liter V8 enhance thermal shielding for the crankcase and cylinder heads. Photo: BMW of North America, LLC.
Want a faster BMW? Here’s what we would pick to leave others in the dust.
Driveline & Suspension Tech
The xDrive all-wheel drive system is rear-biased for those “occasions when the driver adopts a more sporting style of driving,” which is pretty funny to contemplate. There is an optional, electronically-controlled rear M Sport diff if you really want to get “sporty.” Somehow, and for some reason, BMW has thrown an electric motor into this optional rear differential. It allows as much as 1,106 lb-ft. of drive torque to be redirected from wheels with less grip to the ones with more.
I’m sure it works like the business, but heaven help your bank account if it comes apart.
The 2019 BMW X7 comes standard with Dynamic Damper Control with two-axle air suspension. Other options in the chassis department include the Dynamic Handling Package, Integral Active Steering, and M Sport Brakes. The available Active Comfort Drive with road preview works with the air suspension and an active roll-stabilization system. Along with camera sensors that preview the road ahead, the system proactively makes suspension adjustments.
Jet Black, Dark Graphite, and Phytonic Blue will be available as exterior colors in April. Photo: BMW of North America, LLC.
Want something smaller? The new X5 is coming and the X4 is already available.
Positive Vibes
Otherwise, the list of optional tech, connectivity, and safety equipment reads like a 550 page treatise on the ins and outs of whale oil production. But, get this: BMW says the Panorama Sky Lounge LED Roof generates a “very special and exclusive aura when darkness falls, with LED light spreading evenly across the glass surfaces to illuminate more than 15,000 graphic patterns and generate a display reminiscent of a starlit sky.”
I bet this will be real popular in Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, and anywhere else where pot is legal. And there’s a Harman Kardon system that would make Owsley Stanley blush.
Photo: BMW of North America, LLC.
Tell Mr. Brownstone, the Gold Dust Woman, and the White Rabbit we will be here . . . staring out the sunroof.Click To TweetWorth It?
The megillah that is the 2019 BMW X7 is an air of Teutonic prerogative and condescension. That means they’ll probably sell by the boat-load, even with pricing starting at $74,895 for the X7 xDrive40i. By comparison, the X7 xDrive50i begins at $93,595. Expect the new X7 in March.

Big Reveals Scheduled For NAIAS In Detroit

Big Reveals Scheduled For NAIAS In Detroit The North American International Auto Show, held in Detroit, Michigan, is the most significant auto show in the world. Last year at the Cobo Center, there were 50 OEMs present, 42 press conferences, and over 70 vehicle introductions. 5,000 journalists and other media professionals packed the halls for Press Preview, with nearly 13,000 attending the Charity Preview event. The economic impact of NAIAS on metro Detroit, according to Loomis Sayles & Company, is an estimated $450 million.
Big Reveals
Casual car enthusiasts and career automotive professionals can appreciate the sea of iron that decorates the Cobo Center every January. Press Preview (January 15th and 16th) is where a lot of the action happens with regard to vehicle reveals. Here is a partial list of who is going to be in the house and what they will be revealing. All times are Eastern.
Acura
The third-generation Acura RDX Prototype will make its world debut on January 15th at 11:05 a.m. The reveal will showcase a new direction for Acura; this RDX Prototype is the first in a new generation of products, according to the automaker. The RDX will ride on an Acura-exclusive platform centered on two design mantras, Precision Concept and Precision Cockpit. The first is about sleek styling and strong body lines; the latter is concerned with making the interior functional and clean.
Audi
The 2019 Audi A7 will see its global debut in Detroit at NAIAS. The automaker has rolled out a healthy number of products for the U.S. market in recent times. The new A7 is said to join its brethren with refined driving dynamics and an emphasis on functionality, design, and technology.

BMW
The X2 and i8 Coupe will make their world debuts on Monday, January 15th at 9:35 a.m. The X2 is said to have “fast-moving body language, low-slung proportions, and a robust construction.” A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic motivate the X2, expected to arrive in dealerships this spring. BMW will also have an array of electrified vehicles on display.
Hyundai
Hyundai is unveiling the 2019 Veloster and aside from that, no other details have been released. Hyundai’s press conference is set for Monday, January 15th at 12:05 p.m.
Infiniti
The Q Inspiration Concept will take center stage on Monday, January 15th at 12:35 p.m. Karim Habib, Infiniti’s Executive Design Director, says they pushed the traditional sedan architecture to the next level.

Jeep

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee will see its world debut on Tuesday, January 16th. Details are slim right now, but Jeep says the new Cherokee will have a more premium design and more fuel-efficient powertrains. Jeep starts their press event at 8 a.m. on the 16th, with breakfast for credentialed media.

Kia
Ahead its debut, Kia released renderings of the all-new 2019 Forte sedan. Based on the images, the third-generation Forte looks athletic and sleek. And do we see design elements borrowed from the Stinger? Kia’s press conference is scheduled for Monday, January 15th at 11.35 a.m.

Toyota
Toyota will premiere the all-new 2019 Avalon on Monday, January 15th at 1:05 p.m. No additional details were given and the teaser photo only showed a glimpse of the headlights.

Volkswagen
There are even fewer details here, just that VW will debut the 2019 Jetta. They did release these cool sketches, however. VW’s press conference is set for Monday, January 15th at 10:05 a.m.

Big Events
In addition to the vehicle reveals, NAIAS has plenty of opportunities for further education, networking, and just plain fun. Here are some of the other happenings.
Charity Preview – January 19th
A night of fine dining, good causes, and enjoyment, Charity Preview is one of the most exclusive events in the United States. Since 1976, Charity Preview has raised more than $111 million for children’s charities in southeastern Michigan, $41 million of which was raised in the last 10 years. Tickets are $400 per person, $390 of which is tax deductible.
Industry Preview / AutoMobili-D (January 17th and 18th)
Industry Preview places nearly 40,000 automotive professionals and analysts from over 2,200 companies under one roof. It’s a networking and professional development opportunity with the individuals behind many of today’s most innovative technologies and products. Complementing Industry Preview is AutoMobili-D, a gathering of the latest mobility-focused platforms from the world’s automakers, suppliers, and startups. AutoMobili-D examines the connected car, autonomous driving, and how smart cites play a role in our future.
Public Show
NAIAS runs January 20th through the 28th at the Cobo Center, One Washington Boulevard, downtown Detroit. Ticket information for the public show and corresponding events can be found here; a list of daily activities can be found here; for anything else, the show’s official site is pretty easy to navigate. This year at NAIAS, a photo contest is being held with the top prize being Bose SoundSport wireless headphones. If you take any cool photos, share them with us on our Twitter page.

2017 Monterey Car Week: Gathering of Unicorns

2017 Monterey Car Week: Gathering of Unicorns

One of the most prestigious and provocative automotive events of the year is the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This is an event where the finest examples of the world’s most beautiful, uncommon, and expensive cars are put on display; some are even auctioned off to the highest bidder, assuming the reserve is met.
Big Money
People with names such as Bonhams, Mecum, and Gooding show up to ensure the safe handling of the often multi-million dollar, rare exotic sports cars and classics. The latest hypercars from all your favorite manufacturers come together with the most extensive collection of concourse condition, prewar roadsters. And let’s not forget the Rolex Reunion Vintage Motorsport races, marking this event as unquestionably the place to be to get up close and personal with the unicorns of the industry.
Albeit the estimated value of cars auctioned off at the 2017 Monterey Car Week was down 14 percent to a paltry $290 million, it did not disappoint. One of the most beautiful examples to hit the auction block was a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta. The Scaglietti-designed coupe changed hands for a high bid of just over $8.3 million.
Racing Roster
As always, racing is a theme with many of the truly desirable cars offered, and the mostly-original Jaguar Lightweight E-Type presented by Bonhams was no exception. The Jag did not sell this time around but it will be offered again in Scottsdale (where I hope to witness and report its sale). Another icon in the race world was handled by Gooding & Company: the very same Porsche 917 seen in the film Le Mans became the most expensive Porsche ever when the new owner shelled out $14,080,000 to add this legend to their collection. Even though a McLaren F1 made an appearance and garnered an impressive $15.6 million, the coup de grace of the auction lineup was the 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 raking in a dizzying $22,550,000.
As stirring as the high-dollar auctions are, some of the most exquisite pieces did not have a price tag. One such vehicle is the 1932 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A owned by the Atwell family. It has been in the family for ages and showed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance by three generations of Atwells. There are mind-boggling numbers of pristine prewar autos at this affair, so many that one even took the best overall award. The 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer rolled across the honored ramp with its polished hood glimmering more brightly than the seas of Monterey Bay behind it. The marvelous restoration of this supercharged 7.0-liter Mercedes-Benz was completed a mere two weeks before the showcase.

Notable Dignitaries
From distinguished cars to distinguished people, Horacio Pagani himself was present to introduce the most current lineup of eponymous hypercars, of which the Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta was unveiled. This open-top rendition of the Zonda sports a low-cropped windshield, dressed in body panels made of ultra-lightweight, proprietary Carbotanium. Being one of only three it is unlikely this model will be seen at your local Cars & Coffee anytime soon.
Mercedes-Benz also made a strong showing, unveiling the 19-foot long, ultramodern Maybach 6 Cabriolet. Arthur C. Clarke himself couldn’t have created a more strikingly futuristic automobile, in an early postmodern science fiction sort of way. When looking at the sophisticated 2-seat land yacht, one can’t help but think of the Riva Aquarama, not just because the cockpit resembles an opulent powerboat and the eternal length is reminiscent of the AMG Cigarette team race boat, but more so due to the idea that such massive elegance is typically reserved for marine fairing vessels like the Riva.
Although these mythical beasts are showcased on the exclusive fairway of Pebble Beach, a legendary gathering such as this attracts a cacophony of uncommon creations from near and far. One of the most unique and wonderful manufacturers to recently join the gathering came to us all the way from Sweden. This year’s Car Week became host to the largest showing of Koenigsegg supercars to date; 10 of these extraordinary machines were on display for all. The general public could view these Scandinavian jewels as they adorned the streets of Cannery Row among their European contemporaries at the Exotics on Cannery Row event.

Stunning Showstopper
It is not just scheduled proceedings that display fantastical and insanely engineered automotive marvels. Most of the festivities related to the automotive utopia take place in Monterey, however many of the surrounding parking lots and roadways become a bit of a show in their own right. A colossal congregation of this proportion is a magnet for car enthusiasts that flock to the annual pomp and circumstance of Car Week.
Before reaching the first scheduled event, I suffered from a case of whiplash caused by wildly turning my head to catch a glimpse of all the cars on the roadway. The first neck breaker was a parade of Lamborghinis roaring in the opposite direction on highway 101. Somewhere near the middle of the pack, a white Countach caught my eye as I excitedly asked my kids if they knew what it was.
I became increasingly more concerned for the safety of my passengers as my attention was drawn to the Porsche 356 and Alfa Romeo GTV in my rearview mirror. Fortunately, traffic began to slow. As we found out, the slowdown was due to a filming session of sorts on the opposite side of the freeway. The spectacle of multiple McLarens on the roadside literally stopped traffic (the traffic was clearly comprised of many car fanatics anyway). As we entered the City of Monterey, an Aston Martin Rapide greeted us with a full-on profile view as it crossed traffic. It made a left-hand turn through the intersection to the freeway we just departed.
1976 Chevrolet Vega Cosworth at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Photo: Benjamin Caschera for Automoblog.net.
Unicorn Central
Added to the list of fabled cars, the limited-production Chevy Vega Cosworth; as a matter of fact, an entire herd of them assembled on the lawn of City Hall. Only 3,508 Cosworth branded Vega’s were ever made and five of them sat in a row, hoods propped forward in all their “Cosworthless” glory. Other sightings of cars previously thought to be extinct in the continental U.S. included the Peugeot 505, and not just one . . . we spotted three . . . on the road . . . driving under their own power!
The list of rarities goes on and on, and each one could stand alone as an in-depth editorial. The one common thread my semi-coherent ramblings and any other dictation of the entire occasion is how it is a true gathering of unicorns. 323 days (at the time of this writing) and counting until the next one. It is now some time later, and I find myself still reminiscing and yearning for next year’s Monterey Car Week.
Benjamin Caschera is a car nut in every sense of the word. His eclectic writings range from rants on traffic and wrenching on $500 cars, to adulation of the finest classic and/or latest hyper cars. Follow and heckle him on Twitter and Instagram: @TheBoringCarGuy

2018 Nissan Rogue Sport: Pricing & Package Overview

2018 Nissan Rogue Sport: Pricing & Package Overview The Nissan Rogue is Yokohama’s number one selling model in America. Nissan says the Rogue is “right-sized” and that the Rogue Sport both fits that description and comes with lots of tech and safety goodies for a modest price. Although nobody is going to mistake it for a serious off-roader, the 5-passenger Rogue Sport is designed for “everyday urban adventures”
The prices were just released for the 2018 models, and they’re still right in the middle of the “I can afford that” target.
Making The Grade
The Rogue Sport, which is already on dealer lots as you read this, joined the Nissan crossover and SUV lineup at the end of 2017. It arrives for 2018 with a few nips and tucks and tweaks and improvements, so think of this as more of a refinement process than a radical re-do. The Rogue Sport still comes in front-wheel and all-wheel drive and has three grade levels: S, SV, and SL.
SV Technology Package
The SV Technology Package is new for 2018, although more or less the same stuff could be had in the previously available SV Premium Package. The SV Technology Package now includes all the stuff from the proir SV All-Weather Package as well: gizmos like heated seats, remote start, Intelligent Climate Control, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lights, leather-wrapped shift knob, and heated outside mirrors. Sounds like a handy package for a lot of this country in the winter.
SL Premium Package
In addition, the SL Premium Package now includes the all tidbits of the previous SL Platinum Package. So your 2018 Nissan Rogue SL Premium Package comes with Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Intelligent Lane Intervention, and Automatic Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection. The list of available technology in general reads like a delivery invoice at a Best Buy store: RearView Monitor, Siri Eyes Free, NissanConnect with Navigation and Mobile Apps, seven-inch color touchscreen display, and a USB connection port among others.
Power & Performance
On the drivetrain front, the Nissan Rogue Sport is motivated by a 141 horsepower, 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve inline 4-cylinder. The engine is mated to an Xtronic transmission with an Eco Mode switch. The whole ride is underpinned by a four-wheel independent suspension.
Proper Considerations
All of this is aimed right at the Rogue’s target market of younger, urban buyers that want a slightly smaller, sportier, and more affordable crossover. Nissan feels these buyers are looking for more space than a compact sedan, but still want maneuverability and a “fun-to-drive feel.” Here’s a look at the models and drivetrains and their not at all unreasonable costs:

GM Says Goodbye To More Than Steering Wheels In New Self-Driving Report

GM Says Goodbye To More Than Steering Wheels In New Self-Driving Report
General Motors has filed a Safety Petition with the Department of Transportation for its fourth-generation self-driving Cruise AV. The petition says the Cruise AV would be the first production-ready vehicle to operate safely with no driver, steering wheel, pedals, or manual controls when it hits the road next year. Such vehicles are classified as Level 5 automation by the Society of Automotive Engineers, meaning the car itself can perform all the necessary tasks that constitute driving.
But still. No steering wheel?
Safe & Clean
Like many proponents of automated driving, GM wants a world where self-driving vehicles either significantly reduce or eliminate fatal car crashes. On a similar note, many autonomous driving advocates also support electrification. It’s not a random happening that autonomous cars are proposed on and engineered into hybrid and electric platforms. The idea is if we can make a safer society, why not a cleaner one as well.
GM recently published their 2018 Self-Driving Safety Report which details this initiative. The report states each year close to 1.25 million people die in car crashes around the world, 40,000 in the United States alone. Human error is a factor in 94 percent of these crashes. With regard to emissions, GM says vehicles today release almost 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year.
Powerful Partnerships

GM takes a “together we can” approach, saying the promises of autonomy can only happen when places like Silicon Valley and Detroit come together. Indeed, my work and vantage point in the automotive industry supports this. From a high level perspective, Silicon Valley has the software and programming expertise; here in Detroit, we have the industrial manufacturing experience that allows us to physically produce the automated car.
We also have the Red Wings. That has nothing to do with autonomous cars. I just like the Red Wings.
GM believes at the core of this partnership is safety. The automaker’s System Safety program, detailed in the report, pulls experiences and disciplines from other fields, including aerospace, pharmaceutical, and the military. The Cruise AV takes inspiration from fighter planes and deep-space satellites, using elements from both to help safely implement its autonomous capabilities.
This past June, GM produced 130 self-driving Chevy Bolt EV test vehicles. The fleets were equipped with GM’s latest autonomous technology, and joined more than 50 other Bolt EV test vehicles already in use. Photo: General Motors.
Deep Principles
The 2018 Self-Driving Safety Report is like that supplemental textbook for a given college course. Even though GM-specific, it gives a solid overview on how autonomous cars come together. It shows how the Cruise AV is engineered, how the car’s “brain” functions, and how the physical components, from LiDAR to radar operate. Some may enjoy the sections on how GM utilizes Comprehensive Risk Management and Deep Integration in the interest of safety.
“Throughout the design, development and testing processes, our Comprehensive Risk Management approach thoroughly identifies and addresses risks, and validates solutions to address them,” the report reads.
Further Education
AutoSens, a global summit on automated driving, is returning to Detroit in May. The conference provides a place for engineers, researchers, and other industry professionals to address the challenges and opportunities associated with autonomous driving. What is discussed in the 2018 Self-Driving Safety Report is examined at AutoSens, which is why, although GM-specific, it’s a good read for those wanting to know more about autonomous driving.
You can find GM’s report in PDF format here.
Read it if you want something to do this weekend. Or you can wait until cars drive themselves and read it on the way to work. You can put your feet up on the dash while you do. No steering wheel in the way.

2018 Buick Enclave Premium AWD Review

2018 Buick Enclave Premium AWD Review

Buick’s largest premium crossover gets new upgrades for 2018. The second-generation Enclave raises the bar in the styling and technology departments, and is slightly longer than last year with additional legroom for rear passengers. We’ll see why it’s an appealing choice for a luxury three-row crossover SUV.
This week, we’ve been driving the 2018 Buick Enclave Premium AWD.
What’s New For 2018
The Buick Enclave gets a full redesign for 2018. In addition to a sizable list of improvements, Buick has introduced a new, top-of-the-line Avenir version. The Enclave’s wheelbase has grown, the roofline is lower, and the windshield is more angled. Vehicle weight has dropped and the use of LED lighting has increased.
Features & Options
The 2018 Buick Enclave Premium AWD ($50,315) comes standard with LED headlights, a power hands-free tailgate, keyless ignition, pushbutton start, heated power front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, and 18-inch wheels. The eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Premium trims get perforated leather seat upholstery, lane-change alert, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Premium trims also come standard with a 10-speaker Bose audio system, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, front/rear parking sensors, power third-row seats, and forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking.
Options on this Premium tester included the dual front and rear moonroof ($1,400), 20-inch aluminum wheels ($1,400), rear camera mirror ($825), White Frost Tricoat paint ($995), Trailering Equipment ($650), and an HD Cooling System ($495). Total MSRP including destination: $57,055.

Interior Highlights
Elegant yet subtle is how we would describe the interior, featuring a rich cockpit that blends technology with tastefulness. The cabin’s fit and finish excels and offers impressive comfort. We like especially like the upgraded perforated leather, the heated and ventilated front seats, and heated second-row seats. The electronic instruments and display screens appear in an expressive sweep across the dashboard, giving it a contemporary feel. We think Buick’s IntelliLink is among the most user-friendly infotainment interfaces, unlike many other luxury crossovers on the market.
We found the first and second rows had plenty of room for adults with good head clearance and leg space. Power front seats are supportive and comparatively firm. Out back, second-row bucket seats slide fore/aft to expand either leg or cargo space. The optional dual-pane sunroof even offered sizable headroom for taller passengers.
Out back, the Enclave’s second-row captain’s chairs pivot for easy access to the third row, which provide ample space for even six-foot adults to sit comfortably. The second row is a place you won’t mind spending lots of travel time. Cargo space is also a strong point for Enclave, with 23.6 cubic feet of space behind the third row, growing to 58 cubes with the seat folded away. Cargo capacity reaches up to 97.6 cubic feet when the second-row seat backs are folded down.

Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs
The Buick Enclave is powered by GM’s latest 3.6-liter V6 engine, producing 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft. of torque. Engine output has grown by 22 horsepower compared to the 2017 model, though torque has declined slightly. It’s mated to a quick-shifting 9-speed automatic. Our Enclave Premium tester came with optional all-wheel drive.
Fuel economy has significantly improved, yet falls behind some competitors. All-wheel drive models get an EPA-estimated 17/25 city/highway and 20 combined.
Driving Dynamics
The moment we got up to highway speed in the Enclave Premium, we noticed the cabin was especially quiet and the ride was smooth despite uneven pavement. The 3.6-liter V6 is strong, accelerates quicker, and has improved driving dynamics over its predecessor.
We especially liked the shift quality of the 9-speed automatic transmission during the mountain driving we did this week. Shifts were smooth and the engine never had to hunt for the right gear. We used the steering wheel paddle shifters along with a semi-manual mode for maximum control and a more sporty driving experience. Overall, the new Enclave has road manners that will satisfy even the pickiest luxury car buyers. The suspension yields a suitable, yet taut and firm ride that feels controlled. Through even the tight mountain corners, there is very little body lean.
Conclusion
The 2018 Buick Enclave is a sassy but luxurious three-row SUV. Its strong engine and satisfying ride further enhance its appeal. The Premium trim offers plenty of luxury and comes with a host of features to keep families feeling comfortable and safe on the road.
