2018 BMW 4 Series: Performance Poetics



The BMW 4 Series hopes to split the difference between the smaller, more agile and sporty 3 Series, and the more roomy, more luxury immersed 5 Series. The 2018 BMW 4 Series arrives with better chassis tuning and a few other tweaks for the new year.


As I wrote this, I was about 9 hours in to this year’s Daytona 24 Hour race. It is, like all modern endurance races, a crazed series of sprints that last from the green to the checker. There is, as you would expect, packs of Porsches and Ferraris and Audis. The current overall leaders were Cadillacs (of all things).


There were, unsurprisingly, BMWs in the GT categories. They came across as amazingly tough cars. The engines especially pull like a locomotive and sound like something out of a Focke-Wulf FW-190.


Practical Applications & Perfect Fits


One of the BMWs was their current art car. Thankfully, this is not the art car that hack Jeff Koons did a while back. This is a new one, and looks like a refrigerator attacked by a four-year-old armed with colorforms. There might have been 4 Series BMWs in the race, but I could not tell. All of them, not just the BMWs, but any other road car-based racer, is chopped full of vents and louvers and NACA ducts; flairs, dive planes, kick ups, flips, and lips.


BMW will, if it’s not already doing it, propagate good (and appropriate) racing bits from any and all of their cars into any, and all, of their other cars as they see fit. The 4 Series included. They’re smart that way, and Germans have a tendency to do stuff like that as a matter of course.


BMW recently introduced the 4 Series, as a car to fit, technologically and performance-wise, between the 3 Series and the 5 Series. With the 4 Series came the news there would be no more M3. There was much consternation. The M3 is an immortal, beloved to fans of Bayerische Motoren Werke. Simply doing away with it was anathema. This is all by way of pointing out how the 4 Series hit the streets with a black mark on its copybook. But then it literally did hit the streets, and all things (or most things) were forgiven. People liked it.


No, it is not quite as small and light and chuckable as the 3 – especially the M3s – but the 3 Series had been getting bigger and more unwieldy anyway. And the new 4s seemed to be quite a lot of fun and a good blend between crazed sports-racer and luxo-cruiser (e.g. the 7 Series).

Performance & Precision


The differences from the 2017 to the 2018 model are rather slight, with the exception of the new suspension tuning. BMW says the new chassis consists of a sharper suspension for greater agility, a statement implying the outgoing model was too soft. The new BMW 4 Series, both Coupe and Gran Coupe, come with a stiffer suspension, more advanced damping technology, and improved steering. There is reduced roll, greater stability, and the 4 Series displays noticeable gains in both lateral and longitudinal handling.


Engine-wise, the new BMW 4 Series has two available gasoline choices. The 430i comes with a 248 horsepower mill and the top-of-the-range 440i features a 320 horsepower engine. These are bolted to a standard eight-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission, but a six-speed manual gearbox is available in the 4 Series Coupe.


The other improvements of a “might-be-interesting-technical-meaning” are the new, upgraded front and rear aprons. Now, this could be seen as little more than a styling tweak, but if you’re messing about with the rear for things near the underbody, that means you’re fiddling with underbody airflow, especially if you are upgrading the front apron too. You only need to upgrade it if you’ve come up with a better idea on what the air passing beneath the car should do. And if you’re doing that, then you’ve got to get the air out the back.


Hence the new rear apron.


The BMW M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible are outfitted with a six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The engine creates 425 horsepower, although the available Competition Package jumps it to 444. With the latter mated to the M Double-Clutch Transmission, the BMW M4 Coupe hits 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds, while the M4 Convertible gets there in 4.1 seconds. Photo: BMW of North America, LLC.




Color Me Crazy


BMW points out how there are two new exclusive colors for the 2018 4 Series. Exclusive to the 4 Series or all BMWs they don’t specify, but they do tell you what the colors are called: Sunset Orange and Snapper Rocks Blue. Sunset Orange seems easy to comprehend. Snapper Rocks Blue . . . whoo-boy.


I dunno where to start, but I usually end up thinking of a band stuck in the purgatory of the small-market casino circuit with a Glenn Danzig fetish.


The other announcement is there are now four new rims on offer. Not one, not two, not three, but four. Don’t overexert yourself BMW.


Waxing Poetics


It’s worth explaining what the “Gran Coupe” is too. The 4 Series Gran Coupe is a four-door “coupe” (the second after the 6 Series Gran Coupe). The roofline is low and elongated and a rear pair of doors are added. Yes, I know, coupes have two doors, sedans have four. There is no such thing as a four-door coupe. Yes, this is an affront and there will be an accounting for it. Oh yes there will.


What BMW is trying to do, in general, is make a sedan as aesthetically pleasing as a two-door, while giving you the practicality of four doors, like an easily accessible back seat. They say rear seat comfort and space is not negatively impacted. I still remain skeptical, because it looks like there has to be less headroom.


However, the 2018 BMW 4 Series has spoken. In short, better chassis tweaks, reworked underbody airflow, four new wheels, and two new colors.

Shipments of the all-new 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor are headed across the ocean to China. It’s the first time an F-Series truck built in the United States has been officially exported to China. Each model exported is a four-door SuperCrew configuration, with a high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine and Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission.


“Export to China enables us to bring a new group of enthusiasts into the Ford family,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford President, The Americas.


The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor was engineered for the most extreme off-road situations, and is uniquely at home in rocky, rough, or otherwise desolate terrain. The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor features a military-grade, high-strength, aluminum-alloy cab and composite body. An advanced six-mode Terrain Management System helps the truck climb over the most brutal spots on the map, like the Baja and Gobi Desert.


A Ford Performance-engineered high-strength steel frame with custom Fox Racing shocks allow for better ground clearance. BFGoodrich off-road tires and a dual-performance exhaust add to the Raptor’s presence. For customers in China, the truck’s reputation has proceeded itself.


“Ford is one of America’s top exporters, and F-150 Raptor’s appeal and unmatched off-road performance has earned the truck a loyal following around the globe,” Hinrichs said.


David Schoch, Ford Group Vice President and President, Ford Asia Pacific, noted the blue oval’s commitment to offer a wide range of vehicles for customers in China.


“Raptor’s unique looks and capability have generated amazing buzz at every auto show we’ve brought it to around China,” he said.


The 2017 F-150 Raptor, built at the Dearborn Truck Plant, is one of more than twelve new Ford Performance vehicles coming by 2020. The Ford Performance line up includes the Focus RS, Shelby GT350, Shelby GT350R, and the fastest Ford on record, the new GT.

Honda Serving Up Food For Super Bowl Weekend



To my mind, there are two kinds of Super Bowl ads. There are the kind that define your product and make a lasting impact (e.g. Apple’s 1984 Macintosh ad), and then there are the ads that are so bizarre you lose 87% of the viewers and no one even knows what your product is (e.g. that puppy/monkey/baby nightmare).


Honda, for some reason, went with option #2.


Right off the bat, Honda says this in their press release: “Upgraded,” exclusive Tasty recipes served up by Amazon Prime Now, courtesy of the all-new Honda CR-V.”


That’s not a sentence, is it? No. That’s got to be some Dadaist poetry recently uncovered in Kurt Schwitters old papers, right? Seriously, you can rearrange the words and it still doesn’t make much sense. What, did the Honda ad agency guys smoke a huge amount of kif and say, “you know whose ads I like? The ones with Matthew McConaughey just kinda driving around and mumbling. Let’s do something like that. It’d be far out.”


Food & Football


This is a cross-marketing thing between Honda, Amazon, and BuzzFeed; a synergistic tie-in between all three companies where, if it all works out, everyone gets ad time, starts conversations, and makes more money.


Honda points out how the completely redesigned and reengineered 2017 Honda CR-V will make its television debut during this weekend’s big game. So, to help sear the car into the memories of potential buyers, Honda came up with “The Upgrade Presented by Honda.” It’s always in quotes like that, because it’s the title of this whole co-promotion thing between Honda, Amazon, and BuzzFeed.


You know, like “Darby O’Gill and The Little People,” a Disney/David Lynch co-production.


Wait, it gets even more surreal. “The Upgrade Presented by Honda” aspires to make extraordinary memories even more unforgettable by “giving fans access to unique versions of their favorite football recipes, delivered to their doorstep, all compliments of the Honda CR-V.”


No. I’m not kidding.


“Super Bowl Sunday is one of the most celebrated events of the year, and Honda wants to make game day food part of the memorable experiences for family and friends,” said Susie Rossick, Assistant Vice President, Honda Auto Marketing.


BuzzFeed has a global food network called Tasty, so that’s their contribution to all this marketing speak/ad pitch. So, you, as either a football fan, a Honda CR-V fan, an Amazon fan, or a fan of food can watch the Tasty videos at an Amazon-based website. If you like what you’re seeing, you can click through to order the ingredients for the recipe from Amazon Prime Now and they will provide free, one-hour delivery of said ingredients, compliments the Honda CR-V.


“For the first time ever, thanks to Honda, the ingredients for the exclusive Tasty recipes can be delivered to consumers via Amazon Prime,” said Lee Brown, Chief Revenue Officer, BuzzFeed.


Tailgating Pleasures


But what are the recipes? “The Upgrade Presented by Honda” mentions only two: Guacamole Cannoli and Cookies & Cream Empanada. And really nothing says “All American Game of Violence and Ground Acquisition Punctuated by Committee Meetings” like Guacamole Cannoli and Cookies & Cream Empanada.


And you’d think that would be it. One bad trip, and then you’d never have to deal with it again. But no. Honda advises “The Upgrade” will return for Valentine’s Day with exclusive “romantic-inspired” Tasty recipes like No Bake Chocolate Raspberry Tarts and Creamy Slow Cooker Chicken. But I’ll deal with that when Marlow and I get back from our boat trip up the Congo River to have lunch with Mr. Kurtz.

2017 Ford Escape SE 4WD 2.0L Review



Small SUVs and crossovers are the hottest segment in America and here’s one families will want to check out. Ford gave the popular Escape crossover some updates for 2017, and we saw why families should take a look. It offers refreshed styling, sporty handling, and upgraded power.


Recently, we drove the 2017 Ford Escape SE 4WD, with the newly-modified 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.


What’s New For 2017


The 2017 Ford Escape gets freshened with revised front styling, some minor interior improvements, and a newly available 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The modified 2.0-liter engine makes a bit more power. There are also new available infotainment and safety features for 2017.


Features & Options


We drove the 2017 Ford Escape SE 4WD 2.0L ($26,850) that came with a new engine, nicer wheels, and a ten-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. It also came standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a keyless entry keypad, rear privacy glass, dual-zone automatic climate control, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, rear air vents, a rear center armrest, and satellite radio.


Optional Packages


The SE Technology package ($1,395) added LED daytime running lights, roof rails, rear parking sensors, a 110-volt household-style power outlet, the upgraded Sync 3 technology interface (including an 8-inch touchscreen), a nine-speaker sound system with dual USB ports, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The SE Leather Comfort package ($1,595) added leather upholstery and heated front seats.


The EcoBoost 2.0-liter turbo engine added $1,295. Also available is a hands-free power lift gate ($495).


Total MSRP of our tester, including destination: $33,020.







Interior Highlights


The upgraded leather seats may seem like a luxury, but we can’t speak highly enough of this optional feature. The front seats are so comfy, you will think you are in your family room recliner, they are that soft. The rest of the interior is stylish and modern with a two-tone color scheme. There’s lots of soft-touch materials throughout and the quality is first rate for a non-luxury crossover.


The Escape features Ford’s Sync Connect, enabling remote access to the car’s functions via smartphone. The sound system, climate control, and other vehicle systems are easy to understand and use, unlike many new vehicle technologies.


There’s a generous amount of space inside, considering the raked roofline that can limit headroom. Rear headroom is surprisingly good, and even though Ford says the Escape is a five-seater, there’s realistically just enough space for two adults to fit comfortably. When you need extra cargo room, the seats fold flat easily with a convenient handle located on the side of the rear seat. Folded flat, there is 68 cubic feet of cargo space.









Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs


This Escape tester came with the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, developing 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft. of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.


With all-wheel-drive, it gets an EPA estimated 20/27 city/highway and 23 combined.


Driving Dynamics


The Escape’s new EcoBoost 2.0-liter turbo is the engine to get in our opinion. It does cost an additional $1,295, but it’s worth it if you want a little extra performance. We drove through Colorado’s high-country, and the turbo makes quick work of the thin air. It had plenty of power as we continued up I-70 into the mountains west of Denver.


The Ford EcoBoost engine comes mated to a very capable 6-speed automatic transmission that is a fine match for the turbo’s extra power range. It has smooth shifts and is programmed for a good mix of acceleration and fuel mileage. We also had paddle shifters, making it more engaging for driving enthusiasts in the family.


We thought the Escape had engaging driving dynamics and was sportier than most small crossovers on the market, except for the Mazda3. The Escape offers up crisp steering, responsive handling, and good body control in the tight mountain corners. It delivered a smooth ride on the open road and soaked up the bumps easily. The available AWD is worth it if you live in cold climates too. It sends power from the front to rear wheels, up to 100 percent in either direction, where ever the traction is needed.


Conclusion


The 2017 Ford Escape is a capable family hauler and has the power needed for those weekend trips into the mountains. It offers a comfortable cabin and if you get the upgraded leather, it’s an especially comfortable ride. If you want a little extra power, get the 2.0-liter EcoBoost. You won’t be sorry.

Ford GT Mk II: When The Rules Go Right Out The Window The Ford GT Mk II is a collaboration between Ford Performance and Multimatic. 
Track-only supercar developed independent of race series rules and regulations. 
The Ford GT Mk II joins a rich history that includes an epic battle with Ferrari.   
Before this. Before the Ford GT Mk II. In the 1960s, then Ford President Henry Ford II, (Hank the Deuce) wanted the most prestigious racing crowns in Europe – more specifically, he wanted Le Mans. When Ford learned Enzo Ferrari would consider selling, it seemed promising. Ford invested numerous resources scouting Ferrari’s operations but negotiations over the racing division stalled and the deal ultimately fell through.
Ford took it personally.
Beat Ferrari!
The message from Michigan to the United Kingdom was clear when Ford tapped Eric Broadley’s Lola GT. The car was state-of-the-art for the time, with a powerful small-block V8 designed specifically for the mid-engine chassis. The Lola GT later became the Ford GT, and under the direction of Carroll Shelby, the “Mark II” GT40 lands the famous 1-2-3 sweep of Le Mans in 1966. 50 years later in 2016, and with Ferrari hot on the chase, the Ford GT would take the GTE Pro class at Le Mans again. The now legendary rivalry is the subject of a new film, due this November, starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
Ford ended its GT program in the FIA World Endurance Championship at Le Mans in the GTE Pro class this year. Yet the GT, its story, and now its legacy stand among what we may consider racing’s most impossible dreams; if such a thing exists. That said, it seems like a perfect time to debut a new GT, which is exactly what happened at the Goodwood Festival of Speed recently.

What Is The Ford GT Mk II?
The limited-edition, track-only supercar is a collaboration between Ford Performance and Multimatic. The GT Mk II employs the lessons learned from Ford’s FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaigns. However, the GT Mk II is engineered outside the parameters of those respective series.
“The GT Mk II unleashes the full performance potential of the Ford GT without any artificial performance limitations dictated by racing sanctioning bodies,” explained Hau Thai-Tang, Chief Product Development and Purchasing Officer, Ford Motor Company. “It’s the closest GT owners can get to the Le Mans-winning performance and exhilarating feeling of crossing the finish line in the Ford GT race car.”
“The true, off-the-hook performance capability of the GT hasn’t yet been fully showcased,” added Larry Holt, Multimatic’s Chief Technical Officer. “The road car is obviously limited by the many global homologation requirements that it must comply with, and the race car suffers from the restriction of the dreaded Balance of Performance, resulting in it being 150 horsepower down to the road car. The Mk II answers the regularly asked question of how would the car perform with all the limitations lifted: the answer is spectacularly.”

Power & Performance: The Wild West
Absent regulations and with an open drawing board, the teams from Ford and Multimatic got cracking. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine benefits from the wild west mentality, now generating 200 horsepower more than the GT race car. With a grand total of 700 ponies, the Mk II is the most powerful Ford GT ever. Said ponies hit the tarmac via a specially-calibrated, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Facilitating the engine’s performance are a multitude of race-inspired elements throughout. For example, the aerodynamic changes enable it to generate over 400 percent more downforce than the Ford GT! The rear wing exceeds what the Ford GT race car offers in terms of downforce alone. To balance that additional rear downforce, the front includes a new splitter, diffuser, louvres, and dive planes. Slap on the Michelin Pilot Sport racing tires and you’re pulling more than 2 g of lateral grip.
It goes without saying, but the Ford GT Mk II is lighter and more agile. The normal GT’s adjustable ride-height and drive modes are cut for a weight savings of nearly 200 lbs. By contrast, the Mk II features a fixed (but lower) stance and five-way adjustable DSSV shock absorbers.

Keeping It Cool
“Water spray technology” (which is exactly what it sounds like) prevents the Ford GT Mk II from running too hot. The air-to-air outboard charge cooler utilizes the feature; the water spray automatically engages in high-temperature situations, applying atomised water via sprays on the charge air cooler itself. This allows the GT Mk II to maintain higher levels of power, despite higher temps. The roof intake helps too, directing air to the auxiliary engine, clutch, and transmission coolers.
Brakes? Yes. And only the best. A Brembo carbon ceramic set derived from the GT street car.

Ford GT Mk II: Pricing & Availability
Only 45 examples are available for a starting MSRP of $1.2 million. Ford and Multimatic have set up a special website where ownership inquires can be directed. The Mk II is built in Markham, Ontario, then sent to a Multimatic Motorsports facility for the rest of its upgrades.

2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe: When Having Four Doors Is More Fun Destiny has spoken. If you want a sporty and luxurious grand touring car, but can’t stand the thought of spending $220,000 on a Bentley Continental GT, the new BMW 8 Series – in coupe or convertible body style – is the next best thing. Then again, if you want to get your hands on the new BMW 8 Series, the Gran Coupe version will make you pause. Even though the two-door version of the 8 Series is a massive car, there isn’t enough room for adult passengers in the back. I don’t mind having my dog in there when I’m alone, but what if I want to share the driving experience with friends and family?
Hence the 8 Series Gran Coupe. This is why having four doors is more fun in the real world.
Make no mistake about it. The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe remains a niche car for a niche set of buyers. Yet it manages to stir the pot and add flavor to a market dominated by the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-Benz CLS.
The 2020 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe: Offering More For Less
The good thing is the original design of the 8 Series two-door is also evident in the Gran Coupe version. In fact, both cars are almost identical from the front bumper to the A-pillar, but that’s where the similarities end. Beyond that, everything is unique to the 8 Series Gran Coupe.
Obviously, the Gran Coupe has four doors, so BMW had to make it bigger still. The 8 Series Gran Coupe is nine inches longer and 2.2 inches taller than the original 8 Series Coupe/Convertible. It also happens to be 1.2 inches wider for a more planted look. Enhancing the stance is a rear track measuring 65.8 inches which, mind you, is the widest track of any BMW automobile in existence.
The result is a 7.9 inch longer wheelbase versus the coupe. This means having the proper room for five adults, or maybe four adults and a large dog. The windshield is taller to raise the roofline too. This means 3.4 inches more rear headroom. If you consider the rear legroom increasing by 7.2 inches and shoulder room by 7.7 inches, then you have a spacious and practical GT car with enough cargo space to easily carry a set of golf bags.

Gran Coupe: First BMW 8-Series With An Inline-Six
But don’t think for a second you’re getting a so-so inline six. It’s the latest iteration of the German automaker’s TwinPower 3.0-liter six-cylinder mill. It comes with direct-injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger to churn out 335 horsepower and 368 lb. ft. of torque.
More importantly, all that torque is accessible from 1,600 all the way to 4,500 rpm. This essentially means having the pull of a large, high-tech diesel motor without pushing the pedal to the floor. This new inline-six is unique; the exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head while the charge air cooler is incorporated into the intake system. This design improves flow in all stages of the combustion process. BMW’s fully variable valve-timing system (VALVETRONIC) also helps in improving power delivery. The motor uses a new integral heat exchanger and oil module with a split cooling valve to keep everything cool.
With this mill, the 8 Series Gran Coupe is no slouch. It pulls steadily to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with rear-wheel drive. The xDrive AWD version achieves the feat in 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph. You can raise that to 155 mph if you ask nicely for high-performance tires.

V8 Power FTW
The inline-six is good and all but what if you want more power? The good news is, the marvelous, 4.4-liter twin-turbo monster in the 8 Series Coupe and Convertible is also available in the Gran Coupe.
The M850i xDrive Gran Coupe produces 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. of torque and is bristling with technology. The twin-scroll turbochargers are found between the V-shaped cylinder banks of the motor. With high-precision fuel injection, variable valve control, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing, the mill ensures abrupt power delivery throughout the rev range. On the inside, the cylinder walls are treated with an iron coating and the pistons are further reinforced with a coating of Grafal to eliminate frictional losses. The engine block is crafted from aluminum alloy to reduce weight.
And since the new 8 Series Gran Coupe is a luxury car, BMW included a viscous damper on the crankshaft. This improves the smoothness of the motor even as it strains at higher speeds. With this powerful mill, the new 8 Series Gran Coupe sprints from zero to 60 mph in a supercar-threatening 3.7 seconds.

Transmission & All-Wheel Drive Technology
Both the inline-six and V8 receive an eight-speed Steptronic automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. The former has an optimized hydraulics control unit for faster and smoother shifts. The transmission adapts the shift parameters to the current driving conditions using the standard navigation system, which is similar to the transmission of a Rolls-Royce.
Meanwhile, the xDrive is a rear-biased system that feeds power strictly to the rear wheels in normal driving mode. It redirects power to the front wheels as needed, courtesy of an electronically-controlled multi-plate clutch. It sounds complicated for sure, but it works seamlessly in the background to ensure the best traction on any type of road.

Chassis, Suspension & Steering
Without a doubt, the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is essentially a four-door sports car. It was honed and developed together with the 8-Series Coupe and M8 GTE endurance race car. This means a carbon fiber-infused chassis using BMW’s proprietary Carbon Core technology. Suspension-wise, the 8 Series Gran Coupe receives an adaptive M suspension with double-wishbones in the front. The rear consists of a five-link setup with bi-elastic bushings. According to BMW, this enables a balance between sporty handling and a comfortable, silent ride.
The 8 Series Gran Coupe also comes with Integral Active Steering technology. This feature is standard on the 840i XDrive and M850i xDrive while optional on the base 840i RWD. This tech utilizes the electro-mechanical and Servotoronic speed-sensitive steering of the front wheels with the variable steering ratio on the rear axle. The result is better agility at higher speeds and a reduction of the turning circle when maneuvering or parking the vehicle.

Luxurious Interior (And Then Some)
Without question, the luxury theme is eminent inside the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. The dashboard and upper door panels are covered in Nappa leather. The seats are wrapped in premium Vernasca leather in ivory white, black, or cognac. Two-tone leather seats are available as well. The extended center console – unique to the Gran Coupe – continues to the rear and divides the individually-styled right and left seats without obstructing the center seat. This center console houses climate controls, air vents, a storage tray, and USB ports for the rear occupants.
The 8 Series Gran Coupe 840i and 840i XDrive come standard with just about everything: 18-inch wheels, remote engine start, and a panoramic moonroof; the seats, armrests and steering wheel are heated; LED headlights with BMW Laserlight and a heads-up display are also standard. In addition, the 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, wireless charging, and Wi-Fi hotspot are all standard. BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional with iDrive 7 and Apple CarPlay round out the long list of tech features.

Safety & Security
The driving assistance package is optional on all trim models of the 8 Series Gran Coupe. This includes a surround view 3D camera, active park control, active driving assistant, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and parking assistant plus. Upgrading to the Driving Assistance Professional Package gives you more yet: active cruise control with stop & go, active blind spot protection, frontal collision warning, active lane keeping assist with side-collision avoidance, and an emergency stop assistant system.
Wheel & Kit Upgrades
The M Sport Package increases the wheel size to either 19 inches with all-season run-flat tires, or 20 inches with high-performance run-flats. This package also throws in a new M steering wheel, multi-functional seats, and an aerodynamic kit among other things. The M850i xDrive with the V8 motor gets even more kit, including 20-inch wheels, an adaptive suspension and M sport differential, sport brakes and exhaust, and ventilated seats.

2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe: Pricing & Availability
The 2020 BMW 840i Gran Coupe starts at $84,900. The 840i XDrive Gran Coupe has a base price of $108,900. Compare this with the $112,000 base price of the 8 Series Coupe with the same V8 engine and xDrive AWD, you get more doors, more space, and a car that still looks awesome despite paying less.
Meanwhile, the M850i xDrive starts at $108,900. Expect the first deliveries to commence in September.
