GMC Introduces 2019 Yukon Graphite Editions: A Quick Look The GMC Yukon stable is getting a new member – two actually – in the form of Graphite Editions. The 2019 Yukon Graphite Editions feature a darkened and shaded exterior theme, while the Graphite Performance Edition adds a few performance-oriented upgrades.
The new Yukons join the Denali Ultimate Black Edition, another special edition Yukon that made its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show late last year.
Graphite Edition
Styling touches include 22-inch bright machined wheels with Carbon Flash Metallic pockets, black assist steps with gloss black accents, black chrome grille mesh insert, and fog lamp surrounds. Other blacked-out elements include the roof rails and beltline moldings, along with other various trim pieces.

Graphite Performance Edition
This special Yukon includes the aforementioned styling elements but adds GM’s evergreen 6.2-liter V8 engine linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission (3.23 axle ratio) to reduce revolutions at highway speeds. Inside, drivers are treated to Bose Active Noise Cancellation, multi-color heads-up display, navigation, and an eight-inch color infotainment screen.
Power & Performance
The 6.2-liter V8, complete with direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, and Active Fuel Management, puts 420 horses to the pavement; torque is a healthy 460 lb-ft. The Yukon Graphite Performance Edition also gets Magnetic Ride Control, which uses sensors to “read” the road, altering the damping rate of the shocks accordingly.
Along with the upgraded powertrain, the Graphite Performance Edition adds a trailer brake controller, 170-amp alternator, and a higher grade air filter.





Pricing & Availability
The Graphite Editions are available in SLT trim only, but can be had on both the Yukon and Yukon XL in either two-wheel or four-wheel drive. There are three exterior colors: Onyx Black, White Frost Tricoat, and Dark Sky Metallic. Expect the Graphite Editions at dealers later this summer with pricing due closer to that time.

2018 Mazda6 Signature Review The Mazda6 Signature might be the sportiest midsize sedan on the market. If you like to drive, Mazda knows how to entertain your passion for taking the curves a bit faster than the average commuter. This sedan also looks the part on the outside. Mazda designers cranked up their styling juices and have given the car a good dose of sleek.
This vehicle is not all show either – it will also go!
What’s New For 2018
The Mazda 6 receives a variety of updates for 2018. The most significant is the revised interior, which is quieter with a new dashboard design and higher-quality cabin materials. An available 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo – which we had on our Signature tester – joins the lineup. The base 2.5-liter engine now has cylinder deactivation technology to improve fuel economy.
Additional trim levels and new safety technologies round out the changes for 2018.
Features & Options
The 2018 Mazda6 Signature ($34,750) comes standard with LED headlights, push-button start, 60/40-split folding rear seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. An eight-inch entertainment touchscreen includes Bluetooth, one USB port, and a six-speaker sound system. Standard safety features include blind-spot monitoring, a rearview camera, and rear cross-traffic alert.
A six-speed automatic is standard, as are 19-inch wheels, keyless entry, automatic wipers, automatic high-beams, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, illuminated vanity mirrors, and a sunroof. Rear passengers get additional vents in the center console and a center armrest with two USB charging ports. The safety features of the i-Activsense package are standard with the Signature too.
The fully-loaded Signature trim gets higher-quality materials such as microfiber suede, wood, and upgraded leather, along with the addition of LED interior lighting and a frameless rearview mirror. Other additions consist of a digital gauge cluster and a surround-view camera system with front and rear parking sensors.
The i-Activsense package is also included, which features forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist.
Total MSRP including destination: $36,140.

Interior Highlights
The material quality is high and the improved styling inside sets this Mazda6 Signature trim apart. The Chestnut Nappa leather interior on our tester looked rich and upscale. The first thing we noticed was a sweeping dash crowned by a bright new seven-inch infotainment display screen. The Mazda Connect infotainment system is quick enough, but the control device is somewhat uncooperative and the mapping isn’t as good as some rivals.
The sport seats offer excellent support for spirited driving, and the leather gives the sedan a luxurious feel. The ventilated front seats and heads-up display made this sedan feel like a more expensive model. There’s impressive interior space up front, and there’s good leg and knee room in the rear, even for taller adults. The sporty styling does cut down on rear passenger headroom with the raked roofline, however. 
The cabin is quiet on the road at highway speeds, and visibility is improved with the use of high-strength steel in the roof pillars, allowing them to be a bit narrower. The split rear seats fold forward for additional cargo room, and the trunk offers 14.8 cubic feet of space with a wide opening.





Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs
The Mazda6 Signature is powered by a new 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. of torque. It comes paired to a six-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels.
EPA fuel mileage estimates are 23/31 city/highway and 26 combined mpg.
Driving Dynamics
True to Mazda vehicles being known for their good balance and handling, the Mazda6 maintains that standard, and even ups the game a few notches on the fun-to-drive meter. The new 2.5-liter turbo engine makes quite a difference when compared to the standard, naturally-aspired powerplant. 
Overall, the 2.5-liter turbo is smooth and powerful, and it’s a joy to drive with the six-speed automatic and steering wheel paddle shifters. This engine likes to rev and the paddle shifters give you the ability to get the most from this engine. The Mazda6 came alive on the curvy roads we tested it on near Evergreen, Colorado. The steering felt solid and communicative, and the ride was firm and planted with the 19-inch wheels on the Signature trim.
If you are looking for a plush sedan ride, the Mazda6 is probably not for you. If you like to drive, it’s the best in this segment. With the new G-Vectoring Control, the Mazda6 now applies braking to separate front wheels in the corners, shifting weight forward and increasing grip so the turn-in is more secure. When it releases, weight shifts to the rear for improved balance.
Conclusion
The 2018 Mazda6 Signature ups the comfort and luxury level a few notches, and the new 2.5-liter turbo feels even better when you get behind the wheel. The sedan handles exceptionally well, the ride is firm and sporty, and the response from the steering and automatic transmission is what driving enthusiasts will enjoy on the commute.

Automoblog Book Garage: The Three Best Car Books For Summer Normally, winter is the season associated with a good book. There are the usual images: rolling fire, fuzzy blanket, easy chair, warm tea, and that quintessential book resting on a small table. Summer, by comparison, may not be as glamorous for our book-loving friends. One might have a noisy and cranky air conditioner, or worse, no AC at all!
And reading outside might warrant you a visit from that one rogue wasp that makes a dive bomb for your head.
That aside, summer can be a great time to get caught up on your reading. So head out to the patio, grab the iced tea or your favorite cold brew coffee, and get situated in that old deck chair. This is one every performance and muscle car enthusiast needs to own. Author Darwin Holmstrom has crafted a masterpiece of horsepower, documenting the cars so well they nearly leap off the page. Top Muscle: The Rarest Cars from America’s Fastest Decade chronicles the golden days of factory muscle cars, including the ones built in secret – the ones never officially approved by senior management.
In a “sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll” generation, even car enthusiasts got in on the action, and this book is their story.

The John Deere Century
The John Deere Century begins with the agricultural powerhouse struggling to gain traction as farming was becoming more modernized at the turn of the 20th century. John Deere branch managers were petitioning the company’s board for an offering that could match the growing “power farming” movement.
Author Randy Leffingwell walks us through John Deere’s extensive history, from the Model D in 1926 with its innovative flywheel, to the 530 and 630 in the late 1950s now regarded as styling wonders. Leffingwell even draws the conclusion that John Deere accomplished what former General Motors Chairman Alfred P. Sloan wanted: that is to create something for every purse and purpose.
While most entries in our Book Garage series deal with cars, classic or otherwise, The John Deere Century remains at the top of our list. It’s not often a book this comprehensive on an American icon like John Deere comes along. Leffingwell’s work is something fans of the green machines will certinately appreciate.

Lamborghini Supercars 50 Years
Just like the cars he is writing about, author Stuart Codling dives right in and never slows down. We meet Ferruccio Lamborghini and see his passion for machines and his potential, but feel his pain when he returns from World War II.
We especially feel the fire in his clashes with Ferrari.
Beginning with the Miura in 1965 and closing with one of our favorites today, the Huracán, Lamborghini Supercars 50 Years follows a young man who loved machines and what that love could ultimately create. We see other vital namesakes through the years too: Countach, Diablo, Sesto Elemento; every one is there.
The book covers the acquisition of Lamborghini by Audi and how German influence wielded the likes of the Murciélago in 2001, the Gallardo in 2003, the Reventón in 2008, and the Aventador in 2011.
If you fancy exotics or love anything Italian, this book will satisfy any unanswered cravings.

Bonus Book: Day One
This makes the list for a lot of reasons but mainly because of how the book is written and who it is written by. Author Marty Schorr is perhaps best remembered from his time as Editorial Director of Magnum Royal Publications, which published Hi-Performance CARS, Custom Rodder, and Car, Speed and Style
These guys told it like it was and were less politically correct than rival publications at the time.
“We didn’t sell as many copies, we didn’t make as much money,” Schorr told us in a feature earlier this year. “We didn’t have the advertising but we had an abundance of New York attitude.”
Shorr keeps that brutally honest tone in Day One, taking us through his firsthand experiences with some of the greatest cars ever manufactured. He tells us the inside stories of the cars we love and fantasize about owning. Some of our favorites in the book include Pontiac’s 1962 and 1963 lightweight Super-Duty 421 street and Swiss Cheese models, Chevrolet’s 1963 big block 427 Mystery Motor, Ford’s 1963 Galaxie fastback, the Cotton-Owens Hemi Coronet, and Plymouth’s original 1968 Hemi Road Runner.

8 Hyundai Concept Cars That Literally Predicted The Brand’s Future The last decade has seen Hyundai setting its sights far into the future. In that time, Hyundai has unveiled a number of concept vehicles, many of which have captivated the minds of automotive enthusiasts both far and wide. Perhaps most notable is how many of the designs, features, and functions associated with these Hyundai concept cars found an eventual home in the company’s product lineup.



Hyundai Concept Cars Over The Years



As Hyundai continues down the path of innovation, one can study the automaker’s past concept vehicles to gain insight as to what lies ahead. The following are the experimental vehicles that have paved Hyundai’s way. Here are eight Hyundai concept cars that seemed to predict the automaker’s future designs.

Introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the i-oniq showcased Hyundai’s take on hybrid-electric technology. This electric and sporty hatchback proved to be equal parts form and function. The i-oniq had aesthetically pleasing body lines and an efficient powertrain that utilized a gasoline engine to extend the range.



The i-oniq gave rise to the IONIQ four years later, which proved to be quite innovative in its own right (it was the first vehicle to feature three electrified powertrains). The i-oniq is also notable for being the first Hyundai to feature the company’s Cascading Grille.

Taking its name from the underside of an aircraft wing, the Intrado debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and stood as a direct reflection of Hyundai’s continual shift toward its Sensuous Sportiness campaign. The Intrado was built upon the belief that a consumer’s driving experience could be significantly enhanced through advanced technology.



With a flowing, sleek body style, the Intrado showcased a turn toward aerodynamic efficiency and performance-minded innovation. The Kona, which debuted in 2017, reflected many of the same design characteristics as the storied Intrado that came before it.



#3: RN30 (2016)



Based on the i30, the RN30 debuted at the 2016 Paris Motor Show and is unique among all Hyundai concept cars. The RN30 showed consumers the recent strides made by Hyundai in the racing and performance development sectors, particularly in the areas of weight reduction and aerodynamics. The concept was a collaboration between Hyundai Motorsport, Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center, and Hyundai Motor’s Performance Development and High Performance Vehicle Division.



Many facets of the RN30’s design carried over to the i30 N and the i30 N TCR. Some of the most notable holdovers included headlight profiling, Performance Blue paint schemes, and the integration of a full roll cage. The i30 N TCR also showcased many of the same weight reductive qualities found in the RN30.



#4: FE Fuel Cell (2017)



The FE Fuel Cell, which debuted at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, was the first of its kind for Hyundai. The hydrogen-powered FE Fuel Cell would maximize efficiency in every sense of the word. From an optimized aerodynamic design to a zero-emissions footprint, Hyundai left no stone unturned in its bid toward sustainability.



Mere months later, Hyundai released its second-generation FE Fuel Cell, the NEXO, which retained many of the same minimalistic yet stylish exterior design elements of its predecessor. Flowing lines, a floating roof concept, and rear-routed D-pillar that concludes at the vehicle’s spoiler were among the design hallmarks.



#5: Le Fil Rouge (2018)



In what would prove to be one of the most influential Hyundai concept cars to date, the Le Fil Rouge debuted in 2018 at the Paris Motor Show. The Le Fil Rouge paid homage to the brand’s past, cemented the legacy of the day, and provided a glimpse of the future yet to come. This blending of new and old proved to be a milestone in Hyundai’s gradual push toward its current Sensuous Sportiness campaign.



The Le Fil Rouge featured fastback stylings and truly unique body proportions. A longer wheelbase, larger tires, and short overhangs produced a sporty look touted as appealing to the masses. Many of the design characteristics of the eighth-generation Sonata and Elantra are attributed to the Le Fil Rouge.



#6: 45 (2019)



Much like the Le Fil Rouge before it, the 45 stood as a blend of old and new, reimagining the Hyundai Pony concept released 45 years prior. The simple, yet elegant exterior of the 45 featured a substantial amount of straight-line geometry – for example, the 45-degree angles at the front and rear of the vehicle to create a diamond-like silhouette. 



The 45 also emphasized the latest advancements as they pertain to an ultra-modern driving experience, leaning heavily on both autonomous and electrification technology. Many of the design cues for Hyundai’s later EV models were gleaned from the 45.



#7: Vision T (2019)



Debuting at AutoMobility LA last year, the Vision T gave consumers an initial glance at Hyundai’s latest push toward hybrid technology and environmental sustainability. This plug-in hybrid, like other Hyundai concept cars, proved to be nearly as striking in appearance as it was in powertrain efficiency.   



The Vision T featured a long hood, lengthy wheelbase, and level roofline for a sleek, performance-oriented feel. The notable presence of geometric shaping and pronounced edges produced a streamline, yet robust look. The geometric shaping by this point (considering the 45) was a signature element of all Hyundai concept cars.

In an abrupt departure from the bulk of the company’s concept cars, the Prophecy features smooth, flowing curves, in what can only be described as an intensely sporty look. A sweeping roofline that seamlessly bridges together the vehicle’s front and rear halves provide an ultra-sleek side profile.



The Prophecy stands on the pillar of eco-friendliness with a zero-emissions footprint and unique air filtration system. Driving the Prophecy is like none other, as Hyundai opted for joystick controls rather than a standard steering wheel. Perhaps this is why they dubbed the Prophecy as “Optimistic Futurism?”



Hyundai Concept Cars: Moving Forward



If history is any indicator, we are likely to see at least some design elements of the Prophecy carried over into successive vehicles within Hyundai’s lineup. In what form or fashion these features will appear, only time will tell. However, it seems safe to say that whatever awaits will ring true to Hyundai’s ever-present dedication toward innovation and efficiency.



Still, we’re not sure about that whole joystick thing.

This New Quantum Computer Science From Volkswagen Will Blow Your Mind Volkswagen is making incredible scientific breakthroughs when it comes to the development of electric vehicle batteries. It seems like something out of a science fiction movie. The automaker has, for the first time, succeeded in simulating “industrially relevant molecules” using a quantum computer. VW has successfully simulated molecules like lithium-hydrogen and carbon chains, and are already working on more complex chemical compounds.
What does that mean exactly?
Tailor-Made Designs
VW wants to eventually simulate the chemical structure of a complete electric vehicle battery on a quantum computer. It seems mind-blowing but all this super science has a distinct purpose: the development of high-performance electric vehicle batteries. VW is creating what they call a “tailor-made battery,” or a configurable, production-ready “chemical blueprint.”
VW’s press materials on this topic are focused on the hard science, but reading between the lines one can see the intent. VW will leverage cutting edge science to create a better automobile – in this case, electric ones. And the timing seems right, given how a recent survey from AAA found car buyers are warming up to electric vehicles.
“We are focusing on the modernization of IT systems throughout the Group,” explained Martin Hofmann, Chief Information Officer, Volkswagen Group. “The objective is to intensify the digitalization of work processes – to make them simpler, more secure and more efficient and to support new business models.”
“We intend to acquire the specialist knowledge we need for this purpose now,” added Florian Neukart, Principle Scientist at Volkswagen’s CODE Lab in San Francisco, California. “We are convinced that commercially available quantum computers will open up previously unimaginable opportunities.”

Essential Foundations
With newly developed algorithms, VW has already “laid the foundation” for simulating and optimizing the aforementioned chemical structures of electric vehicle batteries on a quantum computer. In time, the quantum algorithm could simulate the chemical composition of a battery on the basis of different criteria: weight reduction, maximum power density, or cell assembly, for example, and even provide a design that could be more easily produced.
VW believes this will help advance the battery development process, a time-consuming and resource-intensive endeavor for any automaker.
“This is why we are combining our core task with the introduction of specific key technologies for Volkswagen,” Hofmann said. “These include the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, as well as quantum computing.”

Collaboration & Applications
Data scientists, computer linguists, software engineers, and other IT experts from VW are working together in San Francisco and Munich to better understand the potential of quantum computing. Various applications in which quantum computing could be beneficial for the automaker are being closely examined.
“We are working hard to develop the potential of quantum computers for Volkswagen. The simulation of electro-chemical materials is an important project in this context,” Neukart said. “In this field, we are performing genuine pioneering work.”
VW is collaborating with Google and D-Wave who provide the VW teams with access to their systems. In late 2017, VW and Google began a partnership with regard to quantum computing.
“Quantum computing technology opens up new dimensions and represents the fast-track for future-oriented topics. We at Volkswagen want to be among the first to use quantum computing for corporate processes as soon as this technology is commercially available,” Hofmann said at the time. “Thanks to our cooperation with Google, we have taken a major step towards this goal.”
VW will present their research at the CEBIT technology show in Hanover, Germany starting on June 12th.

2019 BMW X5: Whatever You Do, Don’t Call It An SUV Don’t call it an SUV people, it’s a Sports Activity Vehicle, at least if you believe BMW. The new for 2019 BMW X5 is here, and it is, in addition to being an SUV (sorry) also a BMW, so that means it’s also much quicker than you’d expect.
Tipping the scales at over 5,000 lbs. the 2019 BMW X5 will never be presented as a featherweight canyon carver. It is, however, a very competent way to get you, some of your friends, and a bunch of gear down the road (or even a little off-road) pretty quickly.
Depending on which engine you choose, the new X5 can get from full stop to 60 mph in either 5.3 or 5.6 seconds, which is great, given the weight and shape of this beast.
Engine Selections
That performance is all thanks to the engines the X5 can be equipped with: A twin-turbo straight six in the X5 xDrive40i or a blown V8 in the X5 xDrive50i. The 3-liter straight six (not a four-liter, despite the 40i badging) is said to rev like the blazes by BMW. I’ll wait and see on that, but, thanks to the twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection tech, the six-banger has a maximum output of 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft. of torque.
Like I said, zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
The big 8 features turbochargers positioned in the “V” between the cylinder banks. Again, the naming is strange because the V8 displaces 4.4-liters, even if it’s mounted in the xDrive50i. BMW says that newly designed heat plates are there to ensure effective thermal shielding for the crankcase and cylinder head, but I’ll believe that when I see one of these things with a quarter-million miles on it.
Mounting turbos and such within the V always makes me nervous, thermally speaking.
Anyway, the V8 mill puts out 456 horsepower with peak torque at 479 lb-ft. All of which is impressive and all of which adds up to a zero to 60 mph time of 4.6 seconds.

Transmission & Driveline Tech
Each engine is mated to a new version of the Bavarian’s eight-speed Steptronic transmission, with a wider ratio spread and new control electronics for overall efficiency. Downstream is BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system with a locking rear differential.
The latest generation of the BMW xDrive system is able to split drive torque between the front and rear wheels with even greater precision and speed, and, for added efficiency, full power can be directed to the rear wheels only.
Right. It’s for “efficiency.”
The standard wheel and tire set up is 19-inch light-alloy wheels, while the M Sport brings 20-inch, twin-spoke wheels to the party. 21 and 22-inch wheels are available.

Laser Focused
All of this new stuff rides in an X5 that is 1.6 inches longer than its predecessor, 2.6 inches wider, and one inch taller. Despite styling issues (the ghost of Chris Bangle still haunts these design corridors), the 2019 BMW X5 has more space for passengers and their stuff. The new X5 comes standard with Adaptive LED headlights and now adds something called, I’m not kidding here, “BMW Laserlights.”
BMW Laserlights feature blue x-shaped elements that split up the hexagonal light sources inside the regular twin headlights.
Interior Treatments
The instrument panel is wide with sweeping horizontal lines and electroplated trim emphasizing the width of the interior. The same finish can be found on the large trim finisher and surrounds and the center console. The fully-digital instrument cluster and the center display are new; the center console hosts the iDrive Controller, the newly designed transmission selector, and all other driving-related controls.
There’s new Vernasca leather upholstery available in five colors and the heated sport seats come with standard electrical adjustments. Optional multi-function seats with massage and ventilation are also available.
The stereo is a fat Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with 20 speakers and a 1,500-watt output. Rear-seat entertainment comprises a pair of 10.2-inch full-HD touchscreen displays, a Blu-ray- compatible DVD player, two USB ports, an HDMI socket, and two headphone jacks.
So shut up back there!





Trim Levels
xLine and M Sport variants are also part of the mix for 2019. The standard xLine model uses lots of matte aluminum, in the underbody, roof rails, and side window surrounds. The pearl-effect chrome “accentuates the off-road character of the all-new 2019 BMW X5.” Sure, whatever.
The M Sport spec gets you wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear underbody protection, and side skirts painted in body color, complimented by matte aluminum kidney grille bars. Oh and roof rails and side window surrounds in high-gloss black.
Yeah, that’s the M Sport. Not exactly the fire-breathing M you and I were hopping for.
Pricing & Availability
The new BMW X5 will arrive in November with pricing expected closer to that time. To date, more than 2.2 million X5 vehicles have been sold globally, with one third of those being in the United States.

Mercedes-Benz Launches New Subscription Based Vehicle Service The “Mercedes-Benz Collection” has officially launched, a program that allows subscribers to switch between different types of vehicles depending on their needs or lifestyle. The service, a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz USA, Mercedes-Benz Financial Services USA, and Mercedes-Benz dealers, is available now in two cities: Nashville and Philadelphia.
Emerging Trends
Mercedes-Benz says they are “testing the waters” with the program for now. In time, it’s possible it will expand to more cities, as the current pilot program is meant to embrace a growing trend among consumers.
“We’re always looking to stay ahead of our customers’ needs and wants, as well as to bring new people to the brand,” explained Dietmar Exler, President and CEO, MBUSA. “We know there is a market opportunity for people who would like the ability to move in and out of vehicles, depending on what they need or want at a particular point in time, or who don’t want to own a vehicle right now.”
“Customer appetites are changing when it comes to how they access products and services, and our financial and mobility services are evolving to fit those demands,” added Geoff Robinson, Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Financial Services USA LLC.
Benefits & Perks
The program consists of three tiers – Signature, Reserve, and Premier – with prices ranging from $1,095 to $2,995 per month after a one-time activation fee of $495. Subscribers can then choose from all the available vehicles in that tier, sedans, coupes, cabriolets, roadsters, and wagons among them.
The monthly fee includes insurance, 24/7 roadside assistance, and maintenance. A concierge staff will deliver the desired vehicle, washed, with a full tank of gas, and even take away the prior vehicle. Mercedes-AMG models are also available in each tier and there are no mileage restrictions.

How It Works
The Mercedes-Benz Collection app can be found in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. After it’s downloaded, subscribers go through a brief application process which consists of a driving and credit history check. In most cases, the application is processed and the subscriber is contacted within one business day.
Vehicle requests received by noon can typically be fulfilled the next day.
“We are working to provide one of the most diverse offerings in the market today and expect to learn a lot from this pilot,” Robinson said. “Adding Mercedes-Benz Collection’s subscription services to our product portfolio is a natural fit.”

Inside The 2017 Ford GT’s Brembo Braking System

The 2017 Ford GT is the fastest production vehicle the blue oval has ever produced. With a precise power-to-weight ratio, five different drive modes, and advanced aerodynamics, the car is worth more than a passing glance. The GT’s engine, a 647 horsepower high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost, is simply the cherry on top.
Or maybe that’s the GT’s top speed of 216 mph?
Either way, getting up to speed isn’t a problem, but what about getting stopped?
Ideal Proving Grounds
Brembo is, for all intents and purposes, accustomed to stopping rocket ships. The company’s high-performance braking systems are found on some of the world’s most powerful racing machines, like Formula One and Indy cars. With more than 300 championships in racing already, Brembo’s technology is unique in that it’s first proven on the track, then brought to the street. The proving and validation environment a track provides, and what can be learned in such situations, will inevitably transition to everyday roads.
For example, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles utilizes Brembo’s expertise on two of their most powerful vehicles, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. General Motors recently worked with Brembo on a new braking kit for select models, including Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 series trucks. The kit upgrade better handles the thermomechanical changes consistent with pulling a trailer or moving a large payload.
Now Ford is in the mix, outfitting their GT supercar with Brembo brakes.
“Our group has been working with the Ford engineering team simultaneously on the Ford GT race cars that are competing and winning now, and have carried those lessons learned over to the Ford GT street model,” explained Dan Sandberg, President and Chief Executive Officer, Brembo North America.

Tech & Personality
The production GT will have carbon ceramic (CCM) rotors with dedicated high performance brake pads on the front and the rear. The CCM discs are exceptionally light and function better at high temperatures.
“Lightweight technology wins on the track and the street,” Sandberg said. “The two-piece CCM brakes on the Ford GT deliver a 50 percent weight savings over typical cast iron braking systems.”
In the rear, the unique-to-Brembo, electro-mechanical parking brake (EPB) is worth noting. The EPB function is delivered by a stand-alone black anodized aluminum caliper, governed by Brembo software. The Brembo EPB operates both automatically and via a button, eliminating the cables associated with traditional parking brake systems. Ford GT customers can select from an array of caliper colors too. Each one displays the Brembo lowercase “b” logo in black.
“The consumer choice of five caliper colors makes every Ford GT a personal design statement,” Sandberg added.

Brembo Electro-Mechanical Parking Brake (EPB):
The EPB caliper is managed by Brembo software, embedded in the ESC unit.
Eliminates additional and unnecessary parts and cables.
Brembo Ford GT Racing Brakes
Lightweight aluminum six-piston Brembo calipers with 380 mm x 34 mm cast iron rotors on the front.
Four-piston calipers with 355 mm x 32 mm rotors on the rear.
Much of the brake cooling geometry hidden in the Ford GT race car carries over to the street version.
The Chip Ganassi No. 68 Ford GT driven by Joey Hand, Sébastien Bourdais, and Dirk Müller won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016 on Brembo brakes.

2018 Buick LaCrosse Receives Light Electrification Update

“The Buick LaCrosse expands its technological credentials by adding eAssist light electrification for the 2018 model,” says Buick in the most vague way possible, meaning that one of their more popular cars now comes in a hybrid.
The term “light electrification” is a pretty good way to go, because although this is a hybrid, it’s not a full blown one like a Prius.
Electric Approach
What Buick, a brand both beloved in America’s heartland and China, is doing with their electrified LaCrosse here is combining an electric motor with the crossover’s 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine to deliver “quiet, refined, and spirited efficient performance backed by the value and customer experience expected of Buick.” Okay, all good so far. Nothing wrong with adding some batteries and an electric motor or two (look at what happened when Ferrari did it), but how does this all play out in the LaCrosse?
Buick’s new eAssist system (yes, that’s how they spell it) pairs the four-cylinder engine with a compact lithium-ion battery pack to offer benefits usually found on fully electric vehicles. So the LaCrosse dials in such goodies as torque-assisted launch, energy-saving regenerative braking (which can also enhance braking performance), and an exceptionally smooth stop/start system. Buick loves this new eAssist system so much it will be the standard powertrain for the 2018 LaCrosse when it goes on sale this fall.
Efficient Packaging
When installed in the LaCrosse, the eAssist differs from previous Buick eAssist implementations by being more sophisticated, powerful, and compact. It gives a 9 percent increase in overall torque, allowing drivers to get the responsiveness expected from a full-size sedan. Also, the newest eAssist system is noticeably smaller and unobtrusively packaged, so you still get to use the LaCrosse’s fold-down rear seat and abundant trunk space. Option-wise, the new standard 2.5 liter four-cylinder/eAssist drivetrain complements the popular V6 plant that remains untouched, and will still be available on select trims.
Other updates on the 2018 Buick LaCrosse include more packages with available all-wheel drive and an all-new nine-speed automatic transmission for the V6 models. By mid-2018, Buick will have five models available with the new advanced transmission. Customer demand is very high for Buick’s intelligent all-wheel drive and active twin clutch gearbox, so that will now be available on the Essence trim.

Inner Workings
Now, the nitty-gritty, techno-details on this whole eAssist deal. The short version is that eAssist combines a compact electric motor powered by a 24-cell, air-cooled 0.45kWh lithium-ion battery pack with the 2.5-liter four-banger gas engine. This combo is designed to enhance efficiency and maintain refined performance.
All of this gets to the tarmac with five major components.
First, there’s the Motor Generator Unit or MGU. The MGU replaces the conventional alternator and acts as an electric motor to provide more power when needed. The MGU is also an electric generator that provides the energy stored in the lithium-ion battery pack. Next there is the entire Electric Assist scheme, the software controlling what switches on or off, and when. The MGU’s electric motor provides extra power for smooth launches while in the Auto-Stop mode. It also funnels additional torque to the engine when the Electric Assist wizards think it’s needed to optimize overall performance and efficiency.
With hybrid systems, there’s also some cool tricks you can do with the braking. In the case of the 2018 Buick LaCrosse, regenerative braking is part of the act. When you hit the brakes or start coasting, some of the energy you normally give away as heat is, in the case of the Buick, converted to electricity through the graces of the MGU and stored in the lithium-ion battery pack.
Speaking of that lithium-ion battery pack, in our case here, it’s an 86V unit, which has been revamped and repackaged to be more compact. It takes up less space, meaning more room for people and stuff. The energy kept waiting in the lithium-ion battery pack powers the electrical system when the entire vehicle it is in Auto-Stop mode. The lithium-ion battery pack also gets power to the MGU to help with the aforementioned smooth launch while in Auto-Stop mode, or additional torque to the engine as the ones and zeros see fit.
The stop/start technology contributes to added fuel savings by turning off the engine when you are in Auto-Stop mode. So, when you are at a stoplight or in heavy traffic, for example, the LaCrosse will shut off the four-banger, and run things on batteries alone. It will then restart the engine when your foot lifts off the brake pedal.
Aerodynamics & Availability
The 2018 Buick LaCrosse also gets a host of aero improvements to help with efficiency. There are upper and lower active aero shutters in the front fascia. These close under certain driving conditions to help maximize aerodynamics and contribute to improved fuel economy; e.g. when you’re going fast enough, they close, since enough air is getting forced over the radiator anyway. Buick makes no mention of cost, but that will most likely be revealed as we get closer to the fall release date of the 2018 LaCrosse.
