Track-only supercar developed independent of race series rules and regulations. 
The Ford GT Mk II joins a rich history that includes an epic battle with Ferrari.   
Before this. Before the Ford GT Mk II. In the 1960s, then Ford President Henry Ford II, (Hank the Deuce) wanted the most prestigious racing crowns in Europe – more specifically, he wanted Le Mans. When Ford learned Enzo Ferrari would consider selling, it seemed promising. Ford invested numerous resources scouting Ferrari’s operations but negotiations over the racing division stalled and the deal ultimately fell through.
Ford took it personally.

The message from Michigan to the United Kingdom was clear when Ford tapped Eric Broadley’s Lola GT. The car was state-of-the-art for the time, with a powerful small-block V8 designed specifically for the mid-engine chassis. The Lola GT later became the Ford GT, and under the direction of Carroll Shelby, the “Mark II” GT40 lands the famous 1-2-3 sweep of Le Mans in 1966. 50 years later in 2016, and with Ferrari hot on the chase, the Ford GT would take the GTE Pro class at Le Mans again. The now legendary rivalry is the subject of a new film, due this November, starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
Ford ended its GT program in the FIA World Endurance Championship at Le Mans in the GTE Pro class this year. Yet the GT, its story, and now its legacy stand among what we may consider racing’s most impossible dreams; if such a thing exists. That said, it seems like a perfect time to debut a new GT, which is exactly what happened at the Goodwood Festival of Speed recently.

What Is The Ford GT Mk II?
The limited-edition, track-only supercar is a collaboration between Ford Performance and Multimatic. The GT Mk II employs the lessons learned from Ford’s FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaigns. However, the GT Mk II is engineered outside the parameters of those respective series.
“The GT Mk II unleashes the full performance potential of the Ford GT without any artificial performance limitations dictated by racing sanctioning bodies,” explained Hau Thai-Tang, Chief Product Development and Purchasing Officer, Ford Motor Company. “It’s the closest GT owners can get to the Le Mans-winning performance and exhilarating feeling of crossing the finish line in the Ford GT race car.”
“The true, off-the-hook performance capability of the GT hasn’t yet been fully showcased,” added Larry Holt, Multimatic’s Chief Technical Officer. “The road car is obviously limited by the many global homologation requirements that it must comply with, and the race car suffers from the restriction of the dreaded Balance of Performance, resulting in it being 150 horsepower down to the road car. The Mk II answers the regularly asked question of how would the car perform with all the limitations lifted: the answer is spectacularly.”

Power & Performance: The Wild West
Absent regulations and with an open drawing board, the teams from Ford and Multimatic got cracking. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine benefits from the wild west mentality, now generating 200 horsepower more than the GT race car. With a grand total of 700 ponies, the Mk II is the most powerful Ford GT ever. Said ponies hit the tarmac via a specially-calibrated, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Facilitating the engine’s performance are a multitude of race-inspired elements throughout. For example, the aerodynamic changes enable it to generate over 400 percent more downforce than the Ford GT! The rear wing exceeds what the Ford GT race car offers in terms of downforce alone. To balance that additional rear downforce, the front includes a new splitter, diffuser, louvres, and dive planes. Slap on the Michelin Pilot Sport racing tires and you’re pulling more than 2 g of lateral grip.
It goes without saying, but the Ford GT Mk II is lighter and more agile. The normal GT’s adjustable ride-height and drive modes are cut for a weight savings of nearly 200 lbs. By contrast, the Mk II features a fixed (but lower) stance and five-way adjustable DSSV shock absorbers.

Keeping It Cool
“Water spray technology” (which is exactly what it sounds like) prevents the Ford GT Mk II from running too hot. The air-to-air outboard charge cooler utilizes the feature; the water spray automatically engages in high-temperature situations, applying atomised water via sprays on the charge air cooler itself. This allows the GT Mk II to maintain higher levels of power, despite higher temps. The roof intake helps too, directing air to the auxiliary engine, clutch, and transmission coolers.
Brakes? Yes. And only the best. A Brembo carbon ceramic set derived from the GT street car.

Ford GT Mk II: Pricing & Availability
Only 45 examples are available for a starting MSRP of $1.2 million. Ford and Multimatic have set up a special website where ownership inquires can be directed. The Mk II is built in Markham, Ontario, then sent to a Multimatic Motorsports facility for the rest of its upgrades.

2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe: When Having Four Doors Is More Fun Destiny has spoken. If you want a sporty and luxurious grand touring car, but can’t stand the thought of spending $220,000 on a Bentley Continental GT, the new BMW 8 Series – in coupe or convertible body style – is the next best thing. Then again, if you want to get your hands on the new BMW 8 Series, the Gran Coupe version will make you pause. Even though the two-door version of the 8 Series is a massive car, there isn’t enough room for adult passengers in the back. I don’t mind having my dog in there when I’m alone, but what if I want to share the driving experience with friends and family?
Hence the 8 Series Gran Coupe. This is why having four doors is more fun in the real world.
Make no mistake about it. The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe remains a niche car for a niche set of buyers. Yet it manages to stir the pot and add flavor to a market dominated by the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-Benz CLS.
The 2020 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe: Offering More For Less
The good thing is the original design of the 8 Series two-door is also evident in the Gran Coupe version. In fact, both cars are almost identical from the front bumper to the A-pillar, but that’s where the similarities end. Beyond that, everything is unique to the 8 Series Gran Coupe.
Obviously, the Gran Coupe has four doors, so BMW had to make it bigger still. The 8 Series Gran Coupe is nine inches longer and 2.2 inches taller than the original 8 Series Coupe/Convertible. It also happens to be 1.2 inches wider for a more planted look. Enhancing the stance is a rear track measuring 65.8 inches which, mind you, is the widest track of any BMW automobile in existence.
The result is a 7.9 inch longer wheelbase versus the coupe. This means having the proper room for five adults, or maybe four adults and a large dog. The windshield is taller to raise the roofline too. This means 3.4 inches more rear headroom. If you consider the rear legroom increasing by 7.2 inches and shoulder room by 7.7 inches, then you have a spacious and practical GT car with enough cargo space to easily carry a set of golf bags.

Gran Coupe: First BMW 8-Series With An Inline-Six
But don’t think for a second you’re getting a so-so inline six. It’s the latest iteration of the German automaker’s TwinPower 3.0-liter six-cylinder mill. It comes with direct-injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger to churn out 335 horsepower and 368 lb. ft. of torque.
More importantly, all that torque is accessible from 1,600 all the way to 4,500 rpm. This essentially means having the pull of a large, high-tech diesel motor without pushing the pedal to the floor. This new inline-six is unique; the exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head while the charge air cooler is incorporated into the intake system. This design improves flow in all stages of the combustion process. BMW’s fully variable valve-timing system (VALVETRONIC) also helps in improving power delivery. The motor uses a new integral heat exchanger and oil module with a split cooling valve to keep everything cool.
With this mill, the 8 Series Gran Coupe is no slouch. It pulls steadily to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with rear-wheel drive. The xDrive AWD version achieves the feat in 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph. You can raise that to 155 mph if you ask nicely for high-performance tires.

V8 Power FTW
The inline-six is good and all but what if you want more power? The good news is, the marvelous, 4.4-liter twin-turbo monster in the 8 Series Coupe and Convertible is also available in the Gran Coupe.
The M850i xDrive Gran Coupe produces 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. of torque and is bristling with technology. The twin-scroll turbochargers are found between the V-shaped cylinder banks of the motor. With high-precision fuel injection, variable valve control, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing, the mill ensures abrupt power delivery throughout the rev range. On the inside, the cylinder walls are treated with an iron coating and the pistons are further reinforced with a coating of Grafal to eliminate frictional losses. The engine block is crafted from aluminum alloy to reduce weight.
And since the new 8 Series Gran Coupe is a luxury car, BMW included a viscous damper on the crankshaft. This improves the smoothness of the motor even as it strains at higher speeds. With this powerful mill, the new 8 Series Gran Coupe sprints from zero to 60 mph in a supercar-threatening 3.7 seconds.

Transmission & All-Wheel Drive Technology
Both the inline-six and V8 receive an eight-speed Steptronic automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. The former has an optimized hydraulics control unit for faster and smoother shifts. The transmission adapts the shift parameters to the current driving conditions using the standard navigation system, which is similar to the transmission of a Rolls-Royce.
Meanwhile, the xDrive is a rear-biased system that feeds power strictly to the rear wheels in normal driving mode. It redirects power to the front wheels as needed, courtesy of an electronically-controlled multi-plate clutch. It sounds complicated for sure, but it works seamlessly in the background to ensure the best traction on any type of road.

Chassis, Suspension & Steering
Without a doubt, the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is essentially a four-door sports car. It was honed and developed together with the 8-Series Coupe and M8 GTE endurance race car. This means a carbon fiber-infused chassis using BMW’s proprietary Carbon Core technology. Suspension-wise, the 8 Series Gran Coupe receives an adaptive M suspension with double-wishbones in the front. The rear consists of a five-link setup with bi-elastic bushings. According to BMW, this enables a balance between sporty handling and a comfortable, silent ride.
The 8 Series Gran Coupe also comes with Integral Active Steering technology. This feature is standard on the 840i XDrive and M850i xDrive while optional on the base 840i RWD. This tech utilizes the electro-mechanical and Servotoronic speed-sensitive steering of the front wheels with the variable steering ratio on the rear axle. The result is better agility at higher speeds and a reduction of the turning circle when maneuvering or parking the vehicle.

Luxurious Interior (And Then Some)
Without question, the luxury theme is eminent inside the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. The dashboard and upper door panels are covered in Nappa leather. The seats are wrapped in premium Vernasca leather in ivory white, black, or cognac. Two-tone leather seats are available as well. The extended center console – unique to the Gran Coupe – continues to the rear and divides the individually-styled right and left seats without obstructing the center seat. This center console houses climate controls, air vents, a storage tray, and USB ports for the rear occupants.
The 8 Series Gran Coupe 840i and 840i XDrive come standard with just about everything: 18-inch wheels, remote engine start, and a panoramic moonroof; the seats, armrests and steering wheel are heated; LED headlights with BMW Laserlight and a heads-up display are also standard. In addition, the 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, wireless charging, and Wi-Fi hotspot are all standard. BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional with iDrive 7 and Apple CarPlay round out the long list of tech features.

Safety & Security
The driving assistance package is optional on all trim models of the 8 Series Gran Coupe. This includes a surround view 3D camera, active park control, active driving assistant, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and parking assistant plus. Upgrading to the Driving Assistance Professional Package gives you more yet: active cruise control with stop & go, active blind spot protection, frontal collision warning, active lane keeping assist with side-collision avoidance, and an emergency stop assistant system.
Wheel & Kit Upgrades
The M Sport Package increases the wheel size to either 19 inches with all-season run-flat tires, or 20 inches with high-performance run-flats. This package also throws in a new M steering wheel, multi-functional seats, and an aerodynamic kit among other things. The M850i xDrive with the V8 motor gets even more kit, including 20-inch wheels, an adaptive suspension and M sport differential, sport brakes and exhaust, and ventilated seats.

2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe: Pricing & Availability
The 2020 BMW 840i Gran Coupe starts at $84,900. The 840i XDrive Gran Coupe has a base price of $108,900. Compare this with the $112,000 base price of the 8 Series Coupe with the same V8 engine and xDrive AWD, you get more doors, more space, and a car that still looks awesome despite paying less.
Meanwhile, the M850i xDrive starts at $108,900. Expect the first deliveries to commence in September.

Those cars that are universally accepted classics such as Ferrari, Aston Martin, and most of the other exotics autos. So what's going to be the classic car of tomorrow? In the past the Chevrolets, Fords, Buicks, and Plymouths of 30-40 years ago were not meant to become future classics, but some of them have actually earned a spot among the Ferraris and Aston Martins at shows and classic car auctions around the world. Will any of the less collectable cars of the 1980s and 1990s make it?

There are so many different definitions of what a classic car is. Some would put specific age limits on the definitions, and others would say that only special variants would qualify for classic status.A classic car is one that stops depreciating in value and either levels off or begins to appreciate over time. The value increasing because of demand ties into the definition that the classic cars have appeal long after they are no longer produced. The goal is to catch these cars when they are at the bottom, before they become more valuable. Of course, values do vary from year to year, so like any potential investment there are risks.

Anyway, here is a list of what we would qualify as potential future classics: BMW 3-Series (E30 1984-1991), Chevrolet Camaro/Pontiac Firebird, Chevrolet Impala SS (1994-1996), Chrysler Shelby K-Cars (Omni GLH, etc), Ford Mustang,Ford Fairmont GM A-Bodies (RWD models, such as the El Camino and Malibu), Mitsubishi Galant VR-4,Mitsubish Starion, Mitsubish 3000GT VR-4 (and cousin Stealth R/T), Nissan 240SX (S13 and S14) Nissan 300ZX, Toyota Corolla GT-S(the famous AE86), Toyota MR2, Toyota Supra (last generation), VW GTI (personally the MKI and MKII)

The value of these cars will more than likely stabilize in the next 5 to 10 years. Granted, some of the cars are special variants, and many may fall into obscurity instead of becoming more popular

BREAKING: Richard Hammond airlifted to hospital after horrific crash while filming Hammond is said to have crawled out of the car himself before it caught fire and is recovering at the hospital he was transported to.

What’s going on?
The BBC and The Guardian report that The Grand Tour’s Richard Hammond was involved in another horrific crash, this time in a Rimac Concept One. The 47-year-old host was in the middle of filming for a new season of Amazon Prime’s show in the hills of Switzerland.

How did it happen?












Details are sparse and an investigation is currently on the way. As of this post, nobody currently knows the cause of the crash.
Is Hammond OK?
According to the reports, Hammond “climbed out o the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames.” Paramedics then airlifted him to the nearest hospital.

It was the biggest crash I’ve ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly, and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly OK.

Co-host Jeremy Clarkson posted a tweet, describing the incident as “the most frightening” accident he had ever seen. We’re certain sarcasm was withheld as Hammond reported suffered a fractured knee, but for the better part, “mostly OK.”
This isn’t the first time Richard Hammond was involved in a terrible accident. Around 11 years ago, he lost control of a land-speed record drag car on the original Top Gear track while filming an episode. It was by far his scariest accident since he suffered brain injuries from crashing at 288 mph. It was found that an exploding tire caused Hammond to lose control of the dragster.
This latest accident raises the bar.

My first experience with Continental was innocently enough with tires. As a former service advisor, I sold them to customers and later, owned a vehicle equipped with a set of factory ContiProContact tires. As is often the case in my life, I see certain things a particular way until the scope is widened for me. And this was a prime example – in my world, Continental made tires, albeit very nice ones, but tires only.
Chance Encounter
My introduction to the “other sides” of Continental came innocently enough as well. In early January 2016, I was attending the North American International Auto Show for the first time here in Detroit. As I walked through the upper floors of the Cobo Center, it was obvious I was lost. I had no idea where I was going until I bumped into Brad Warner, Senior Director of Lambert, Edwards and Associates here in Detroit. He could tell I was lost so he graciously spent a few moments giving me the lay of the land at Cobo.
As we shook hands to go our separate ways, he mentioned Continental’s passive safety and automated driving round table later that afternoon. On a whim, this well-to-do man I never met invited me to what would become an enlightening academic event hosted by one of the world’s most innovative automotive companies.
Five Fold
Continental consists of five divisions: Tires, ContiTech, Interior, Powertrain, and Chassis and Safety. First and perhaps most common in our minds is tires. The division’s product portfolio includes tires for passenger cars, trucks, buses, industrial vehicles, and even bicycles. ContiTech specializes in rubber and plastics, and is instrumental in the early stages of automotive trends. This includes advancing such concepts as weight and complexity reduction with emphasis on functional integration across Continental’s range of products, systems, and services.
The Interior Division works under the “always on” mantra, developing what they describe as holistically connected systems. The division specializes in the flow of information between vehicle, passengers, mobile devices, and ultimately the driver. Products include multifucntion displays, infotainment setups, operating systems, radios, cockpits, software, and telematics. Over in the Powertrain Division, team members are examining how to move our vehicles more efficiently and responsibly. Product initiatives place particular emphasis on reducing emissions and fuel consumption to meet rising consumer demand in these areas.

Hard Questions
And then the Chassis and Safety Division. This Continental squad (although I still really like tires) is my favorite. This arm of the company operates by “Vision Zero” or the idea that one day, accident-free driving will go from dream to reality.
“I absolutely think we can do it – there is no doubt in my mind we can do it,” said Amit Kapoor, Vice President, Passive Safety and Sensors, Continental Corporation. “How quickly that happens is the question I think every one of us faces.”
Continental’s Chassis and Safety Division covers a number of areas related to the modern automobile: electronics, sensors, suspension, braking, air bags, advanced driver assistance systems, and even windshield washers. The range of what the division covers is extensive but Kapoor and his team want to save lives. They get up each morning with this goal, and the understanding that current mobility trends are shuttling us directly into autonomous driving. Continental’s Chassis and Safety Division is moving with the times, and addressing the hard questions facing automated vehicles.
“From a technology perspective in a controlled case, you can do it, and there is data for that,” Kapoor said. “The question becomes what happens when you put the same vehicle outside amidst a lot of other cars which are not like it – which are not thinking autonomously.”

How Much More
Another hard question is how much better an automated vehicle must be over a human counterpart. Although still a vague definition, the general consensus is a lot. In other words, if the public is going to accept autonomous driving, robot cars must be that much more exceptional, incredible, capable, proficient – insert any buzz word that comes to mind – but the point is, an autonomous car has to be rock solid.
“In the end, what we know from the past is that automated systems, like anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control, do a better job of reducing accidents than humans do,” Kapoor explained. “It is not to say human beings are not smart, but at times, there isn’t objectivity in our decisions behind the wheel becasue of various emotions and distractions.”
Kapoor believes automated systems will evolve, gradually becoming more precise and further defining what “a lot” means when given as an answer to how much better a driverless vehicle needs to be. It’s not a sidelines approach either. Continental’s Chassis and Safety Division is moving the ball down the field, taking an offensive approach to the defense of human life.
“We have a patent on an automated vehicle with regard to how it will react if you have a heart attack – it will immediately find the nearest hospital and take you there,” Kapoor said. “We are entering a phase where our engineers, especially our future millennial engineers, are thinking about use cases that 15 years ago I don’t think anyone would have thought about.”

Collective Strategy
The discussions concerning automated driving and the strategies for achieving it are numerous. It’s a huge topic and not to be taken lightly. As a society, as a nation, the implications are immense; if we pull it off, it would mean a significant drop in traffic fatalities, drastically improved infrastructure, and a lower carbon footprint. True, such ideas snuggle nicely with Utopian concepts, but it takes more than fuzzy feel-good attitudes to bring this better world to fruition. That’s not to say we should avoid optimism, idealism, and creativity – those things are needed greatly when confronting the challenges of automated driving – and tapping into that, and leveraging such things on an individual level will bring ideas like “Vision Zero” home.
“Our people move within the company and so they carry their experience with them when they go from chassis to powertrain, or from interior to tires. If you are thinking about what could happen in a car, you can bring a new perspective to the table somewhere else in the company based on your prior experience,” Kapoor explained. “To do automated vehicles successfully, you need all those competencies from different parts of the company. We have very talented people – nobody told me to say that – that is my personal belief.”
Kapoor, now with Continental for 16 years, explains how he makes all the sensors that go in our cars, from anti-lock brakes to electronic stability control, to any and all sorts of wheel and chassis controls. He is responsible for making sure products are launched, that existing ones are performing well in the market, and the overall business is growing. As mobility trends push toward autonomy and the discussions grow more prevalent, it’s an intense responsibility, but Kapoor and his team are not going anywhere, anytime soon.
“My job at Continental is fun,” he said. “It’s really a lot of fun.”

Subaru Stokes Performance Fires With Limited Edition WRX STI Type RA, BRZ tS

Subaru is a real Jekyll and Hyde kind of car company. They are best known for making all-wheel drive wagons and sedans that are efficient, practical, dependable and, largely not that memorable. Their bread and butter is selling to outdoorsy types that do a lot of hiking and camping or need to haul kids back and forth.
And then there are Subaru offerings that are mean, nasty little beasts. Cars derived from World Rally Championship entrants that can reach and maintain astonishingly high velocities across snow, and glare ice in the middle of the night racing across the Alpes Maritimes.
Take for example Subaru’s two latest mean, nasty offerings, the limited edition WRX STI Type RA and BRZ tS.
BRZ tS
I’ll dive into this one since it’s something hardcore gearheads have been clamoring for since the BRZ first hit the streets. The BRZ is, in many ways, sort of like a coupe version of a Miata with a Subbie flat-four under the hood. That is to say, it’s fun, tossable, addicting, and sadly, rather underpowered. But, given the deep, tempting parts bin Subaru has at their disposal, fans of the marque have been screeching for a hot rod model since day one.
Enter the Subaru BRZ tS.
BRZ, already no slouch in the ultra-low center of gravity and precision handling department, now gets STI-tuned SACHS dampers and coil springs (front and rear) as well as flexible V-braces in the engine compartment. There are added stiffeners to the chassis and sub-frame that improve steering response. The tS also comes with 18-inch lightweight STI wheels (a first) shod with 215/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires for increased grip and quicker turns. Wanna stop? Brembo brakes at all four corners are there to help you do just that.

BRZ tS Exterior Treatments
The outside has special bits of styling flash here and there. There’s an aggressive looking STI rear carbon fiber spoiler that is manually adjustable. There are also STI designed front, rear, and side underspoilers for better traction and stability. There’s an exclusive Cherry Blossom Red accent around the front grille, a unique rear bumper cover, and a BRZ tS badge on the rear hatch. Also, as Subbie is want to do, the fog lights have been removed and replaced with STI fog light covers, which, if you ask me, is dumb. More light please.
BRZ tS Interior Appointments
On the inside, the cabin features black leather and Alcantara upholstery with flashy red stitching and accents slathered all over the place, including the steering wheel, door, dash panels, knee pads, shifter, and emergency brake boots. The front seats have red leather bolsters and the seatbacks are embroidered with a tS logo. The interior door trim and the gauge cluster visor are unique; the center console has a cast black finish. Finally, the BRZ tS comes standard with red front seat belts and a frameless interior rear view mirror.

WRX STI Type RA
The RA designation stands for “Record Attempt” and has been applied to various Subaru performance models over the years. In the case of this RA, the “Record Attempt” will be a Nürburgring speed record this summer. Huzzah! So, okay, that follows, but at the same time “WRX STI Type RA” is way too many little appended letters. Auto companies have to stop doing this.
The 2018 WRX STI Type RA delivers increased performance via weight reduction, suspension modifications, and engine upgrades. There’s a carbon fiber roof panel, the spare tire is gone; a carbon fiber pedestal wing has been added, and so have lightweight BBS 19-inch forged alloy wheels, wrapped in 245/35 R19 Yokohama Advan Sports tires.
Power & Performance
Beneath the hood is Subbie’s ubiquitous 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine, now increased to 310 horsepower. The extra ponies are thanks to a new, STI-spec’d cold air intake and high flow performance exhaust. The ECU has been re-tuned and stronger pistons have been slid into the bores. The six-speed transmission gets a revised 3rd gear ratio and a short throw shifter.
Handling gets upgraded with inverted front struts (lessening unsprung weight) and the rear double wishbone suspension gets Bilstein dampers just like the front. A modified multi-mode center diff control gives the car better stability. The Brembo brake system, scary-looking monoblock six-piston front calipers and dual-piston rear calipers, seem to be enough to stop a freight train in their exclusive silver finish. The rotors are cross-drilled for better heat dissipation, natch.

Exclusive Arrays
Like the uprated BRZ, the WRX STI Type RA has an exclusive Cherry Blossom Red accent around the front mesh grille and rear bumper cover. There is also the aforementioned STI front underspoiler for better stability at high speeds. A roof-mounted shark fin antenna and STI fender badges now come in a black finish, and just to let other drivers know what you got, there’s a special badge on the rear deck lid.
On the inside, the WRX STI Type RA features Recaro front seats with red bolsters and stitching, and embossed STI logos on the head restraints. The steering wheel is wrapped in Ultrasuede for better grip and has a black gloss-finish center spoke insert with the STI logo. Push-button start? Yup. And each model will be individually numbered with a plaque mounted on the center console.
Limited Availability
Both the 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA and BRZ tS will be available in WR Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Silica, and Crystal White Pearl. No matter which one you get, go for the World Rally Blue. Always go with the factory racing colors. Both are limited to just 500 units and will arrive at Subaru dealers in the first quarter of 2018.

General Motors, Honda Partner For Next Generation Battery Technology

General Motors, Honda Partner For Next Generation Battery Technology General Motors and Honda have announced an agreement meant to bolster the all-electric vehicle portfolios of both companies. Engineers will be tasked with developing more advanced battery components, including the cell and module, for a next generation system that will return higher energy densities and faster charging times albeit in a smaller, lighter package.
Economies of Scale
The automakers will collaborate based on GM’s next generation battery system with the intent for Honda to source the battery modules from GM. Officials say the collaboration will support each company’s respective and distinct vehicles, while the combined scale and global manufacturing efficiencies will provide greater value to customers.
“This new, multiyear agreement with Honda further demonstrates General Motors’ capability to innovate toward a profitable electric portfolio,” explained Mark Reuss, General Motors Executive Vice President of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. “GM’s decades of electrification experience and strategic EV investments, alongside Honda’s commitment to advancing mobility, will result in better solutions for our customers and progress on our zero emissions vision.”

Forward Momentum
A previous joint manufacturing venture between GM and Honda is already well underway. Teams from both automakers are working to make fuel cells and hydrogen storage systems more viable and affordable, and are intending to produce such a system in or around 2020.
“In addition to our ongoing joint development and production of fuel cells, this battery component collaboration will enable us to take a new step toward the realization of a sustainable society,” said Takashi Sekiguchi, Chief Officer for Automobile Operations and Managing Officer of Honda.
With regard to future electrified vehicles, both companies say this most recent announcement concerns the North American market.

Fast Cars & Pounding Hearts: An Exciting Day With Formula Experiences As I read my assignment, my heart began pounding – Formula Experiences. Formula, I think to myself, as in Formula race cars? Am I dreaming? Someone pinch me . . . 
I’ve done a lot of cool things behind the wheel: participated in dozens of autocross events, raced in 24 Hours of LeMons and Chumpcar, driven the canyons outside of Los Angeles, and traversed the wilds of Australia’s Fraser Island in a 4×4 Suzuki Jimny. But I never dreamed I’d have an opportunity to ride in, let alone drive a true race car.
That’s something for the bucket list.
One & Only
And that’s exactly the concept Peter Heffring, entrepreneur, software CEO, adventurer, and avid racer – along with his team of highly skilled mechanics – have debuted at Virginia International Raceway, or more locally known as VIR. The place sat vacant until 2000 but has grown considerably in its nearly two decades. Peter’s vision, Formula Experiences, is one such example of how VIR has expanded and flourished – in fact, it’s the only place in America where enthusiasts and race fans can get this close to formula and prototype cars.
Peter didn’t necessarily have a playbook to follow to bring the Formula Experiences concept to fruition, but its execution works: it provides the customer with a personalized experience that cannot be matched. My assignment, should I choose to accept it, was simple enough: arrive at VIR and meet at the Oak Tree Tavern for dinner and orientation.
I accepted.
I arrive early, of course – I simply must sneak in and catch a glimpse of these cars.
Friendly Greetings & Fantastic Machines
As I arrive at the unassuming red building I’m immediately greeted by two friendly faces: Ty, who is Formula Experiences’ General Manager – a pleasant and easy-going guy, always ready to assist – and Chief Engineer Rhys who is on loan to Formula Experiences from the Radical UK plant in Peterborough.
Opened in 1997, Radical builds prototype series racing cars. With seven cars in their current lineup, Radical’s offerings range from the $70,000 “entry level” SR1 for those looking to enter into club sports with a fully prepped race car, to the $250,000 plus RXC GT3. None of these track-specific cars are considered road legal but Radical does offer a version of the RXC for road use, designated for those brave enough to drive it on U.S. streets.

Commanding Presence
Formula Experiences owns a small fleet of about six of these Prototype-style 2018 Radicals, as well as two Formula-style 2018 Ligier JS F4s for younger drivers ready to make the move to open wheel from karting. Little did I know, but the first car that caught my eye – a bright blue Radical SR3 – would become my track toy for a day.
The Radical SR1s and SR3s at Formula Experiences are otherworldly in their presence: low and wide, with wings, air vents, and roll bars jutting out from all angles. Bodywork that is function first, form a distant memory. This purpose-built track machine may not be considered beautiful in the traditional sense, but it certainly demands attention, even while sitting perfectly still.
Start the engine and blip the throttle just once and every head in a quarter mile radius is going to turn your direction. Presence, passion, speed – “Who is driving that race car? They must be pretty serious. I want to do that some day!”
Make no mistake, these cars were never intended to be driven by novices. However, Peter has structured his program around education by combining virtual reality simulation, classroom lessons, on-track instruction, a ride-along to feel the G-forces and to understand the braking points, as well as a follow-the-leader training approach. Peter can, with this approach, take a novice and make them competent and, more importantly, relaxed and confident in these seemingly out-of-reach racing cars in just one day.

Early & Energized
We started first thing but the weather at VIR Resort simply couldn’t be better. Clad in my race suit, I arrive a little groggy – I didn’t get much sleep, as I spent all night asking myself over and over again: am I really ready for this?
Peter and his crew are quick with pleasantries and the VR trainers are configured and ready to go. Breakfast will arrive shortly – why not get a few laps in on the trainers before we get started? I sit down at the first trainer and VIR’s South Course is already pulled up – an exact digital reproduction of the track we’re about to drive. The trainer is surprisingly realistic with solid haptic feedback, great surrounding visuals, and slight movements in the seat to simulate weight transfer.
“I bet someone would pay just to do this all day” I think out loud, and Peter is quick to note that it’s certainly an option. A fully-customized opportunity for each person is at the heart of Formula Experiences’ objectives.

Professional Equipment
We get to chatting a bit more and Peter lets me know these aren’t your typical racing SIMs – these are professional trainers that Peter uses to hone his skills before any competition, spending countless hours right here, learning every corner. You can compare your times to professional drivers around the world to see how you stack up. They, under the guise of pseudonyms, use this very same setup in their own professional training programs.
Fast-forward a bit and I’ve spun or walled my virtual race car a dozen times – I’ve hardly made it around the track without doing something completely moronic. Of course, I’ve never been good at racing games so it’s probably just me, right? The other guys working the trainers next to me are doing just fine and I wonder again: am I really ready for this?
Class In Session
We move to the classroom portion of our day, reviewing safety concerns, going over track conditions, flagging, and other track tips. But Peter has a slightly different approach which I really appreciated: Formula Experiences uses a video narrated by a professional driver to go over every minute detail of the exact course we are about to drive from the perspective of the car we’re about to step into – fantastic.
The classroom doesn’t end there as we pile into Peter’s SUV so he can take us on the track to discuss the setup for each corner, navigation, and what to look for. The simulator still has me a bit on edge but the classroom training and on-course training has helped significantly.
Upon looking at his car, Automoblog’s Aaron Benson began to wonder, “Am I really ready for this?”
Locked & Loaded
My nerves move from apprehension to excitement as we pull back into headquarters. We begin preparing and head to the garage where Peter has selected the aforementioned stunning blue SR3 as my track toy for the day. With a zero to 60 time of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 147 mph, this car is undoubtedly fast, but the real stat here that begs all the attention is this: lateral G-force in the 2.3 range – no road-going car is even close to this level.
In fact, the fastest cars you can imagine – Porsche, Ferrari, GTR – barely break 1 G.
I load up my cameras and Chief Engineer Rhys goes over his final checks on the car. Formula Experiences leaves nothing to chance and they live by the mantra that an over-prepped car is the best and only option. If the car is right, very little can go wrong and in this business, nothing can ever go wrong.
I awkwardly lower myself into the SR3. Carbon fiber and racing harnesses surround me. A few switches and dials, and with the push-button start, the car roars to life.
“Rev her up to 2,000 rpm or so and count to five while you let out the clutch – everyone stalls the first time.” 
I stall it at least three times before I get a feel for the clutch engagement and then eventually pull off with a jerk and a rumble.
Driving through the paddock at low speed was interesting in itself. Every single pair of eyes is watching, wondering and I imagine lusting at the sight of such incredible machines. We enter the South Course and Peter goes straight onto the track. I follow.





Fish Hook
The rush of air sucking into the intake just behind my head, the G-forces thrusting me deep into the carbon racing seat, the sound of the motor pushing towards the 10,000 rpm rev limiter, and the crack of the gearbox as gear changes are clicked off in milliseconds from the paddle shifters – this thing is incredible! My first thoughts are lost as euphoria washes over me. My left foot finds the dead pedal (these cars are fully automatic once out of neutral) and my right foot goes to the floor.
Second gear, third gear, fourth gear, and then hard on the brakes down, down, down to second, look for the apex and turn-in and OH MY GOD – the grip is insane! I’ve never felt anything like it!
Clip the apex, eye the exit, the car settles and back on the throttle, foot to the floor – third gear, fourth gear, the track dips and turns skyward and it’s hard back on the brakes. Up and over and into the Spiral, a very fun section of the South Course that corkscrews down into a hard left, find my exit back on the throttle and into the Fish Hook – you can hold your speed with an early exit here, track out and back to flat as you push the car up and over a small blind.

Oak Tree
I lose my nerve and let off the gas as the track comes back into focus, through the south bend, back on full-throttle, and the car screams as I dive into Oak Tree . . . poor thing. (An actual oak tree was VIR’s iconic landmark until it came down in 2013.) Oak Tree is a fast corner if you have the experience and don’t stare down the tire wall; otherwise, it’s a constant annoyance where you take the corner too slowly each time.
I fall into the latter category but the payoff comes next: exiting the Oak Tree I track out, mash the pedal and click through all six gears on the front straight. I hit 120 mph and then squeeze on the brakes hard, down, down, down, down to second before doing it all over again.

Attention To Detail
The experience around the track is exhilarating but what’s going on behind the scenes is even more impressive. Peter and his team constantly ask questions, monitor progress and look for every opportunity to keep us relaxed, engaged, having fun, and achieving the ultimate objective: getting faster. Every time I pitted, Rhys & Ty scrambled to help me out of the car while checking the car’s vitals. Rhys, with his laptop plugged in, was gathering and reviewing every piece of data – and my SR3 was performing flawlessly.
We talked through everything and after a bit of one-on-one coaching from Peter, I’m back in the seat.
Packaging & Pricing
I lost count of how many laps I put in, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that number approached or surpassed the 50 mark. Through it all I felt a total connection with the Radical SR3, Peter, his crew, and Formula Experiences but with packages starting at $1,995 for a one-day driving experience (training, coaching, ride-alongs, and six driving sessions) plus $1,000 for the recommended insurance, Formula Experiences isn’t exactly an inexpensive day at the track.
An all-inclusive luxury experience package runs around $6,000.
There are multiple packages, each one custom-tailored based on personal preference. They range from ride-alongs and night rides, to full driving experiences, track days, and company events. Formula Experiences has a calendar on their website that shows dates and availability of each session.

Consensus
I look at this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and from that perspective, and compared to the cost of similar on-track driving experiences I investigated, the price tag falls in line for a full day session. You get to appreciate how extreme aero works, feel two Gs of grip, and you get a ton of seat time with Formula Experiences.
Put it on your list – it’s worth saving up for.
