However, the Tesla Model S lords over many in the EV universe.
Is this sleek Audi strong enough to dethrone the mighty Tesla Model S?
The Audi e-tron GT concept and Tesla Model S go head-to-head in this virtual showdown.
It’s no secret the Audi e-tron GT was a hit during the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. And why not? Based on the exterior proportions, it is basically a stretched version of the Audi R8, which is not a bad car to begin with.
But it doesn’t matter if Audi is directly targeting the Tesla Model S when it conceived the e-tron GT Concept (which they did). The newest electric vehicle from Audi will have to win over potential Tesla Model S buyers to be considered a success, hence the significance of this virtual EV showdown!
2018 Tesla Model S: The Big Daddy
The current Tesla Model S is no stranger in the automotive world. It paved the way for the eventual construction of the Model X and Model 3. The Tesla Model S has the looks of a luxury car, the stance of a sports sedan, and the performance of a supercar; not to mention the practicality and carrying-capacity of a crossover.
It’s hard to put into words, but the Tesla Model S is the daddy. It’s the prime beef! If other premium electric vehicles want to succeed, they must top the Model S in all aspects, including driving range and cost of ownership.
I’m also a purveyor of the Musk philosophy. Many people find many things wrong with Elon Musk and his creations, but the products are speaking on behalf of the brilliance that is Elon. He specifically created a family luxury car that ordinary daddies can play with when the wife is out shopping, or when the kids are in school.

Even in base spec 75D, the Tesla Model S is no slouch. The dual-motor, all-wheel drive system can propel the hefty Model S (approximately 4,719 lbs.) from zero to hero in 4.2 seconds. That’s faster than most sports cars. The range is around 259 miles on a single charge.
Prices for the base trim start around $75,000. I know that’s enough money for a proper luxury car, but you do get a nice amount of kit. For example, 19-inch wheels, adaptive air suspension, LED headlights, a 17-inch touchscreen, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Enhanced autopilot with full self-driving capability is optional.
But in this trim, you only get vinyl and cloth seats. If you want leather, you need to select the premium upgrade, which is optional to other trim models of the Tesla Model S.
Ludicrous Performance
The Tesla Model S 100D is equipped with a larger, 100 kWh battery pack to achieve 335 miles of range. It can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 155. But if you want to run with the Ferrari LaFerrari (zero to 60 in 2.6 seconds), Lamborghini Aventador (2.7 seconds), or the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid supercar (2.5 seconds), you can’t go wrong with the Tesla Model S P100D.
It can scoot from zero to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Crazy, right?
But there’s a catch!
For a family sedan, the Tesla Model S P100D starts around $94,000 without options. If you’re the typical family man, it’s a lot of money to spend on a car. You can get a premium SUV for that price with more room and possibly some off-road capabilities. However, for that price, you will never have to visit a gas pump again, not to mention blowing the doors off most sports cars. I don’t know about you, but that sort of freedom is, in a nutshell, priceless.

But the Tesla Model S is not only properly quick. It can seat five adults. If you choose the optional rear-facing jump seats, it increases the capacity to seven, although the seats are only good for midgets, small children or both. It also has 30 cubic-feet of cargo space, large enough to swallow a day’s worth of Black Friday shopping.
However, the Tesla Model S is not bulletproof. This is expected given Elon’s struggles to gain a firm and profitable hold on the company. Most recently, Tesla issued a recall on the electric power steering system in the Model S. In 2015, they recalled every Model S to fix a seatbelt issue. Then again, those had nothing to do with major EV components like the battery and electric motors. You can call it growing pains if you want, but these niggles are somewhat insignificant given the capabilities and performance of the Model S.
Tesla Model S Charging Options
The Model S comes with a mobile charging cord with three adapters: NEMA 5-15 (three miles per an hour of charging), NEMA 14-50 (240-volt outlet, 10 hours for full charge), and an adapter for Tesla Superchargers (full charge in 1.5 hours). If you have a Tesla wall connector, it can juice up the batteries in six to nine hours.

Audi e-tron GT Concept: The Gran Turismo EV
If you think the Audi e-tron GT is merely a concept car, think again. Audi says it’s 99 percent ready for production and will be available by 2020. I’m not sure why it’s taking that long, but it probably has something to do with Audi’s intent in trying to come up with a different sort of four-door EV.
To start, Audi grabbed a clay model of the Audi R8, lifted it a bit, widened the corners, and stretched it aggressively to produce a low-slung, prowling stance. Whereas the Tesla Model S is gifted with an organic yet plebeian shape, the new Audi e-tron GT is an exaggerated version of the R8 sports car – but in a good way, mind you.
The Audi e-tron GT has the same fastback styling, which is all the rage nowadays. It gives the e-tron GT a sleek and aerodynamic shape. This car sits low and wide to the ground, like an R8. But you get a wider cabin with loads of space for four adults. You also get additional headroom in the front and rear seats. The latter is an impressive feat given the sloping roofline in the rear.
This is a testament to how low the Audi e-tron GT is to the ground.
From the front, it’s definitely like a wider R8. From the sides and rear, however, it gets more familiar. The Audi e-tron GT concept shares almost the same dimensions as the current Porsche Panamera. Ironically, the e-tron GT also shares the underpinnings and electric powertrain of the Porsche Taycan EV, which also happens to be an electric, four-door and coupe-like sedan.

Impressive Performance
I’ll say it again: the Audi e-tron GT, as the name suggests, is a gran turismo sports sedan. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. If Audi was aiming to run over the Tesla Model S, it would have given the e-tron GT ludicrous-worthy numbers.
But they didn’t.
Instead, Audi fitted the e-tron GT with a pair of electric motors and a flat battery pack. The latter essentially forms the flat floor in the e-tron GT. It also comes with an electronically-driven Quattro all-wheel drive system, the same sort you will find in the e-tron SUV. It governs all four wheels using digital torque vectoring without needing mechanical linkages between each wheel.
The Audi e-tron GT also comes with a 90 kWh battery pack, enough for 248 miles of range. The electric motors churn out 590 horsepower for a zero to 60 mph time of 3.5 seconds. Not exactly mind-blowing numbers if you ask me, but it’s enough to shame the Tesla Model S 75D. However, it’s not enough to run circles around the 100D and P100D.
From those numbers alone, the Audi e-tron GT is not pretending to be a supercar or hypercar, and that’s good. Without a doubt, it’s easy to have fun in a 590 horsepower electric car, and the Audi e-tron GT will certainly oblige. It has the looks, stance, engineering, and the badge to back it up.

Luxurious & Premium Appointments
But what makes the Audi e-tron GT stand out from the Tesla Model S is the interior. It doesn’t have the minimalist approach of the Model S, but I’m glad they didn’t take that route. Much in the same way I felt about the Audi e-tron SUV, I like the fact that Audi gave the e-tron GT a normal-looking interior.
And I say this with high praises. Audi is a luxury brand, no doubt. And even if the e-tron GT is equipped with a vegan-themed interior (synthetic leather and recycled fish nets for carpets, no kidding!), it managed to remain premium and luxurious to the naked eye.

New World Practicality
The Audi e-tron GT can only seat four people, which makes it less practical than the Tesla Model S. But since the e-tron GT is not primarily a people-hauler, that’s not a tough pill to swallow. Audi is marketing the e-tron GT concept as a performance derivative of a family car, so having four seats instead of five is not exactly a bad thing.
Where Tesla is marketing the Model S to be the only car you ever need, the Audi e-tron GT Concept is for people who already have more practical family vehicles. Instead, they want to add a faster (yet still somewhat practical and luxurious) EV with an Audi badge.
Even though you get more cargo room in the Tesla Model S, the Audi e-tron still offers 15.9 cubic-feet of cargo space in the rear, and another 3.5 cubic-feet under the front bonnet.
Oh and before I forget, am I the only one who thinks Tesla interiors are dreary? Please don’t get me wrong. The minimalist and ergonomic theme is a welcome change, but the build quality and materials could use an upgrade considering the rather hefty price tag.

The Audi e-tron GT recharges itself in a variety of ways. Lifting your foot off the throttle will trickle-charge the batteries, for example. The same thing happens when stepping on the brakes. This allows the 90 kWh battery pack to achieve the claimed 248 mile range, even if you’re pushing it and wasting energy.
But the Audi e-tron GT has another ace up its sleeve: the 800-volt charging system. This standard system juices the battery pack to 80 percent in just 20 minutes. Other charging options include the Audi Wireless Charging System, perfect for potential owners who are too lazy to plug-in their e-tron GT upon arrival.

Audi e-tron GT concept Versus Tesla Model S: The Verdict
The Audi e-tron GT is an attractive proposition. No word yet on pricing, though. But if the base trim is around $75,000 to $80,000 then Audi has a sure winner here. I’m pretty sure the top model will cost upwards of $100,000 but we’ll have to see how Audi positions the e-tron GT in the consumer market.
As for the Tesla Model S, it remains the daddy for now. But if you want a luxurious and reasonably-quick sedan that gurgles electrons instead of fossil fuel, you’ll have to wait for now to experience what the Audi e-tron GT has to offer.
But if Audi announces an RS version of the e-tron GT, then all bets are off.

This week, we drove the 2018 Lexus NX 300. Here is what we found during out test drive. 
What’s New For 2018
Lexus renamed its NX 200t the NX 300 for 2018. Mechanically, nothing has changed, but Lexus has made the Safety System+ package, which includes front collision mitigation, lane departure alert, high-beam assist, and adaptive cruise control standard.
The NX 300 also gains an updated infotainment system with a bigger display, and a 30 percent larger Remote Touch Interface pad.
Features & Options
The 2018 Lexus NX 300 ($37,385) comes standard with 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, fog lights and running lights, keyless ignition and entry, automatic dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and simulated-leather upholstery (Lexus’ NuLuxe). There is a 60/40-split folding and reclining back seat, eight-inch infotainment display and touchpad interface, and an eight-speaker sound system.
Also included is adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and mitigation, lane departure warning and intervention, and automatic high beams.

The Luxury package ($4,705) adds automatic wipers, a heated steering wheel and leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats and blind-spot monitoring, 18-inch wheels, a sunroof, driver’s-seat memory settings, and a power-adjustable steering wheel.
The Navigation package ($1,800) features a larger 10.3-inch screen and a premium sound system. Other options include a panoramic view backup camera and triple-beam LED headlights.
Total MSRP, including destination, for our 2018 Lexus NX 300: $49,068. By comparison, a 2019 model starts at $36,385 with front-wheel drive; $37,785 with all-wheel drive.

Interior Highlights: Really Nice But Not Perfect 
The NX 300 interior is the strong point with a level of craftsmanship not typically found in smaller crossovers. The two-tone leather interior, with Dark Umber trim and light stitching, is stylish and attractive. We especially like the heated seats and steering wheel, which take the chill out of the cold mornings we’ve been having recently.
The darkest cloud is cast by the frustrating and ill-conceived Remote Touch infotainment controller. We found it hard to use and a bit finicky to the touch. It is one of our least favorite things about the 2018 Lexus NX 300. 
The leather seats in front and back are noticeably soft and extremely comfortable. The seats aren’t elevated like in other crossovers, which increases headroom and gives occupants the unique sensation and feeling like they’re riding in a typical sedan.
There’s lots of legroom and headroom in the back and the NX feels bigger than it is. Lexus gave rear passengers plenty of room, but took it away from the cargo area. There’s 17.7 cubic feet which falls short of the competition. A drawback is how the rear cargo space is limited due to the steeply sloped rear window.

Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs
The 2018 Lexus NX 300 comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, producing an ample 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. It’s mated with a six-speed automatic. Our tester had all-wheel drive, nice for the winter time. Although, we didn’t feel the all-wheel drive system was really up to par on our test drive.
EPA fuel mileage estimates are 22/28 city/highway and 24 combined mpg. When compared to some possible competitors, the 2018 Lexus NX 300 holds its own in terms of fuel efficiency. 
Driving Dynamics: Steady & Simple 
In terms of performance and driver engagement, the 2018 Lexus NX 300 is merely average among the current crop of luxury crossovers, especially from Europe. But if you are looking for something easy-to-drive, the NX 300 makes a great city commuter. It’s the perfect size to navigate narrow streets and tight parking spots.
The NX leaned a bit in the tight mountain curves near Evergreen, but it’s predictable and poised on the open highway. Driving enthusiasts who value better handling will want the more athletic F Sport option.
However, as an everyday commuter, the 2018 Lexus NX 300 places few demands on the driver and provides a calm, comfortable cabin.

The 2018 Lexus NX 300 looks a little different than other crossovers because it is. The exterior styling won’t appeal to everyone but once you step inside, however, the cabin will win you over. There’s extra attention to detail, luxury treatments, and the quality is there.
The NX 300 is a good alternative to other cookie-cutter crossovers.

Top Off-Road Trails & Parks In America: Let’s Get Dirty! When you’re in the mood to get your 4×4 dirty, this list from PartCatalog has you covered!
The infographic below shows the top off-road trails and destinations in 39 U.S. states in 2018.
When you have a super cool off-road ride, just where do you take it? Where exactly are the top off-road trails in the United States? Perhaps you want to see the hidden trails of your home state? Maybe you want to venture to a new locale far from home? When you want to enjoy the great outdoors, where do you go?
We have an answer for you.
Top Off-Road Trails In America
Now in its third year of conducting surveys for off-road enthusiasts, PartCatalog has released an infographic compiling the top off-road trails and destinations in 39 U.S. states. Although other surveys of this nature exist, PartCatalog took a different approach.
“There are a lot of lists out there showcasing top off-road destinations, but they’re all very subjective,” explained Clint Henderson of PartCatalog. “Many were decided by only a few or, in most cases, one individual.”
After visiting with customers, it became apparent having a list of top off-road trails was a must.
“We got an overwhelmingly positive response to the idea of compiling the best off-roading destinations based on location,” Henderson said. “That’s how we decided to run a massive nationwide survey to discover the top off-road trails and parks in each state.”
In the survey this year, 5,000 people went about casting their votes for the top off-road trails and parks in America. Henderson believes, because of this, the off-road locations on the list really do reflect the best destinations.
“The trails and parks we’ve compiled are special because of the sheer numbers involved,” he said.

King of The Mountain
Some of the top locations changed for 2018, versus years prior. For example, in 2016, Piney Mountain in Maryland was barely hanging on at number five, jumping now into the number two position. Nauset Beach in Massachusetts made an even farther leap, being number five in 2016, now number one in 2018.
Others didn’t move and remain among the top off-road trails in their respective state. For example, Alabama’s Stoney Lonesome, Black Bear Pass in Colorado, and Iron Range in Minnesota top the list again. Conversely, a few prior winners didn’t make the cut this year.
“Some of the top trails from years past don’t exist anymore,” Henderson explained. “Certain parks may stop or start allowing off-roading over the course of a year.”
Time To Get Dirty!

Pricing begins at $25,395 when the new Ranger arrives next month.   
2019 Ford Ranger production is underway at Michigan Assembly. After an eight year absence, the Ranger returns for the 2019 model year. Ford has invested $850 million into Michigan Assembly for both the Ranger and Bronco, the latter set for production in 2020.
“The revitalization of the Michigan Assembly Plant and renewed production of the Ford Ranger is another exciting chapter in our state’s comeback story,” said Governor Rick Snyder. “This is also an opportunity to look toward its promising future with production of the all-new Ford Bronco on the horizon.”
“Ford truck fans demanded a midsize pickup that’s ‘Built Ford Tough,’ and we’re delivering with our all-new Ranger that’s specially designed and engineered for American truck customers,” added Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s President of Global Operations. “At the same time, we’re revitalizing our Michigan Assembly Plant and securing good-paying jobs for our hourly employees here in the U.S.”

New Family
Ford is transforming their product lineup, building their truck, SUV, and commercial vehicle momentum. Earlier this year, Michigan Assembly ended Focus production, taking the necessary retooling measures in anticipation for the Ranger’s launch. The 2019 Ranger is the first in a series of all-new vehicles as Ford looks to replace over 75 percent of their North American portfolio by 2020.
“We have been waiting for this day for a long time,” said Michigan Assembly Plant Manager Erik Williams. “The Ranger is back home in the U.S., and our employees at Michigan Assembly Plant are thrilled to be able to build it for our customers.”
Power & Performance
The Ranger’s 2.3-liter EcoBoost features a twin-scroll turbocharger, forged-steel crankshaft (and con rods), and chain-driven dual overhead cams. It’s paired to a 10-speed automatic and creates 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. of torque. When properly equipped, the 2019 Ford Ranger has a 7,500 lbs. towing capacity and a payload capacity of 1,860 lbs.
EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings come in at 21/26 city/highway and 23 combined for 4×2 trucks. As a 4×4, fuel economy ratings are 20/24 city/highway and 22 combined.
An available FX4 Off-Road Package includes Terrain Management and Trail Control systems to increase performance during adverse or rough driving conditions.

Trailer Profiles
The 2019 Ford Ranger can store up to three trailer profiles, including a trailer’s length. This lets the radar system know how far back to provide warnings as vehicles approach the trailer. Ford says such a system is class-exclusive and not available on any other midsize pickup.
Trim Levels & Availability
Trims include the entry-level XL, mid-level XLT, and high-level Lariat, with available Chrome and Sport appearance and FX Off-Road packages. The 2019 Ford Ranger will come in a SuperCab or SuperCrew configuration when it arrives at dealers next month.

We’re not sold on the styling but the 2020 Lincoln Aviator has lots of redeeming qualities.  
Wow, where to start with the 2020 Lincoln Aviator? Well, first off, it looks like a cross between a bank vault and a cheese grater, and a very angry cheese grater at that. It has the on-road presence of a Panzer tank, and all the creature comforts of a 12,000 square foot McMansion. In short, it’s just what a certain segment of the American car buying public wants.
Lincoln will probably sell them by the boatload.
Suburban Mainstays
Maybe it’s just where I live, but I’ve been seeing a lot of Lincolns around for a while now. The same could be said when I was interned in Arizona. Sure, down there, there’s tons of retirees, and that demographic loves its big American cars. But Lincoln, a company on its deathbed as long as its namesake, seems to be entering some sort of resurgence these days. So like I said, you’ll probably be seeing more of these large, stately, borderline-ugly things tooling around shopping malls and burbclaves and such in a couple of years.
The 2020 Lincoln Aviator hit the stage at this year’s LA Auto Show, with Lincoln noting that their “three-row midsize (ha!) premium SUV” is aimed at the highest volume segment in the United States: the midsize luxury market. They also, rightly, point out how this is also the “third-highest volume segment in China.”

You’d expect the Aviator to be powered by a big ‘Murican V8, but no, the powertrain choices are actually rather sensible and efficient. The standard engine is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, hooked up to a 10-speed SelectShift automatic. As such you get a notable 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. of torque. Impressive for only three-liters. The optional powertrain is that same twin-turbocharged engine connected to a hybrid drive system. Lincoln says it gets you 450 horsepower and a colossal 600 lb-ft. of torque. Yes please!
There’s no word on MPG figures for either engine, but with 600 lb-ft. of torque, I’m willing to wait, then completely forget.
The drivetrain is controlled via this scheme referred to as “Lincoln Drive Modes.” There are five “signature” settings: Normal, Conserve, Excite, Slippery, and Deep Conditions; then for 2020, two new modes: Pure EV and Preserve EV. As the names imply, these two new modes allow drivers to choose how and when to best use their electric energy from the hybrid system.

Convenience & Safety: Digital Keys & Driver Assist Systems
Naturally, the tech doesn’t stop there. The suspension system automatically lowers the vehicle to “greet” the driver and turns on the signature welcome lighting. Lincoln’s “Phone As A Key” means you can lock and unlock, open the liftgate, adjust seat, mirror and steering positions, and, ta-DAH, start and drive the vehicle without a traditional key. And, if you’re gullible enough to loan out your Aviator, the technology allows up to four “keys” for each vehicle.
The 2020 Lincoln Aviator has a gizmo that lets it “see” potholes or uneven pavement, adjusting the suspension as it does. Lincoln calls it Adaptive Suspension with Road Preview.
The Co-Pilot360 feature includes multiple assist systems as standard equipment. Traffic Jam Assist, for example, contains adaptive cruise control for stop-and-go traffic, lane centering, and traffic sign recognition. Evasive Steer Assist helps avoid collisions with a slower or stopped vehicle; Reverse Brake Assist will stop the Aviator from backing into something, and Active Park Assist Plus guides you into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.

Comfort & Connectivity: Luxury Car Levels of Both
Other comfort and convenience features abound inside the 2020 Lincoln Aviator. The Revel Ultima 3D Audio System contains 28 speakers, while the steering wheel recognizes subtle thumb movements for accessing numerous functions and commands. The seats offer 30-way adjustability, massage, and additional lumbar support for drivers and passengers. The second-row seats recline, adjust fore and aft, and slide forward for access to the third row.
Other such features include wireless phone charging in the center armrest, a handy media bin, multiple power outlets throughout, and a standard Wi-Fi hotspot.
Pricing & Availability
In many ways, you can think of the 2020 Lincoln Aviator as your home away from the retirement home; the perfect vehicle to get you from your gated community in Scottsdale or Boca Raton, down to the golf and racket club. And back in butter smooth comfort, quietly and safely.
Expect the new Aviator next summer with pricing information due closer to that time.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R PRO: Affalterbach’s Hurricane The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R PRO emerges as the latest in the AMG GT line. 
The two-door AMG GT Coupes and Roadsters come with a unique driving control system.
Mercedes-AMG says everything about the new GT R PRO was modified for track performance. 
I’m starting to think Mercedes is just messing with us now, especially when it comes to anything with the AMG badge glued to it. The German’s engineering prowess and cultural depth of knowledge is so profound, it’s like trying to argue with Wotan. “Oh, is that what you think,” comes the stentorian voice, booming from the clouds, “Then behold mortal! Witness the AMG GT!”
And now, witness the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R PRO.
Delivering The Goods
Yes, Mercedes-Benz is kind of stodgy and conservative in a engineering sense. They lack the design finesse and penchant for experimentality of Ferrari; have nowhere near the impudent glee of Porsche, or the British refinement and reserve of Aston Martin, but Land O’Goshen can they deliver the goods. The goods, in this case, being grip and braking and power; lots and lots and lots of power.
Driving anything hot off the line from AMG means you know what Günther Rall must have felt rolling in on a stream of B-17s over Frankfurt.
Expanding The Family
In an odd way, Mercedes-Benz seems intent on making the GT a sub-brand within the AMG sub-brand itself, sort of a sub-sub-brand. There are, in point of fact, three Mercedes AMG GTs: The Mercedes-AMG GT, the Mercedes-AMG GTC (which is a four door “coupe”), and the Mercedes-AMG GT R/Mercedes-AMG GT R PRO. The latter are twin track terrors with the luxo stuff taken out and speed stuff added.
The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R PRO was even inspired by the AMG GT3 and AMG GT4 race cars.
“No other current production Mercedes- AMG is as close to motor racing as the new AMG GT R PRO,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “A lot of experience from our current GT3 and GT4 motorsport activities entered into its development.”
Where we are at in 2020 with these GTs is a place of refinement, of constant honing of this, sharpening of that, trimming of this bit einfach so, of that bit nur ein bisschen mehr.

Dynamic Controls: A Testament To Refinement
A good example is the AMG Dynamics portion of the AMG Dynamic Select drivetrain/chassis control system. Along with the standard modes (Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Race, and Individual), AMG Dynamics also broadens the functions of the electronic stability control.
AMG Dynamics has four modes: Basic, Advanced, Pro, and Master. No laughing mortal! Displease Wotan and suffer the consequences! Basic works with the Slippery and Comfort drive programs for stable handling and higher yaw damping. Advanced is coupled with the Sport program for more neutral balance and lower yaw damping. With a reduction in the “steering angle requirements,” the Advanced mode is perfect for winding country roads.
Pro is part of the Sport+ program and provides even more assistance than the Advanced mode does for those spirited driving sessions.
Master, which is only available for GT C and GT R, connects to the Race drive program. Master mode is aimed at those of us driving around on race tracks. This gives the GT an extreme neutral balance and an even lower steering angle. Master ensures the utmost agility and fully exploits the GT’s dynamic potential.

Suspension Tech: All About Wear Resistance
Of course the coil-over suspension got tweaked. Drivers can set the spring preload length mechanically, but the compression and rebound of the shocks is variable. This is done without tools via a click system with an integrated adjustment dial on the damper. You can even set the compression rate separately for high-speed or low-speed driving. The front axle now has a carbon fiber torsion bar while the rear is made of steel. Both are adjustable, natch.
The lower wishbones of the rear axle have Uniball spherical rod-end bearings. They are considerably more wear-resistant than conventional bearings and their design has no play, so toe-in and camber do not change even under high loads. Nasty!
“The agile responses to all driver commands and the overall performance now deliver even more of that incomparable feeling that our racing drivers experience on the track,” Moers said.

Carbon Fiber & Aerodynamic Treatments
There’s a carbon fiber shear panel in the underbody to help cut weight and increase overall precision. AMG even retuned the electronically-controlled engine and transmission mounts, a move they say increases agility and response. Along with the carbon-fiber components, the standard ceramic composite braking system also cuts weight.
Aerodynamics are enhanced with a re-designed front apron and two flics at the sides, clear-coated carbon fiber, of course. Air slots in the front fenders are for more than looks, venting the wheel arches and lowering front-axle lift.
Out back, there’s a clear-coated carbon-fiber aero bit at the wheel arch. The rear spoiler now has a lip for increased downforce as well.

Power & Performance: The Numbers Speak!
And there’s even more, all of which Mercedes-AMG goes into great detail on, but the only details that really matter are these: zero to 60 in the mid-3s and top speeds nudging the double ton. The next greatest detail is this: 7.04.632 minutes around the Nürburgring. AMG brand ambassador and AMG GT3 racing driver Maro Engel recorded the time.

Nissan plans to build six LEAF NISMO RC vehicles to deploy around the world for fans to see.
Now that’s what I’m talkin about! Being kind to Mother Earth is all well and good, but you want to sell electric vehicles? Make them fun! The best way to make a car fun is to go out and race it, and this, the LEAF NISMO RC from Nissan, looks as much fun as a big electric go kart.
Sign. Us. Up!
First Of Its Kind – Kinda
The new electric racer from Nissan has more than double the max power and torque than its predecessor had. Wait, there was a predecessor? How come I didn’t know about this? How come we didn’t get one in at One Automoblog Towers for testing? Ha, alas, but this new one? Mama mia!
Power & Performance: Two Is Better Than One
The Nissan LEAF NISMO RC is powered by two electric motors, one at each end of the chassis. Combined, the motors produce 240 kilowatts and send an astounding 472 lb-ft. of torque to the wheels. And yes, since this is an EV, all that torque starts at zero RPM. Curiously, the drivetrain tech comes from the new Nissan Leaf, including the high-capacity lithium-ion battery and the power inverters.
The all-wheel drive system gives the LEAF NISMO RC the cornering ability to match all that torque. The power is managed independently to each axle, providing torque to whichever tire has the most grip. The battery pack sits amidships, and the electric motors and inverters are ideally placed over the front and rear tires.
This is a race car, so of course, Nissan has lightened things wherever they could. A full carbon-fiber racing monocoque structure means it tips the scales at just 2,700 lbs. Impressive, given how heavy batteries can be. This breaks down to a zero to 60 time of just 3.4 seconds. Think of how much guilt-free fun that could be!

Styling & Design: Looking The Part
Since this is not just a race car, but a Japanese race car, the whole thing looks like something Brian O’Conner would drive to a Neon Evangelion cosplay convention in the Ginza. Nissan talks about the “more aggressive exterior,” and I ain’t gonna argue. The hood is long, the grille is that ugly signature V-motion deal, and the front end has been totally restyled. It’s all silver and black with NISMO red accents, aping the look of the company’s Formula E car.
The front and rear sections of the three-piece bodywork are removable but the windows are fixed in place. LED headlights and tail lights adorn both ends and there’s an adjustable rear wing. The whole thing is as ugly, and no doubt as effective as a Sten Gun.

In Person
Nissan will be showing off the LEAF NISMO RC at Formula E races and major auto shows. A smart marketing move considering the growing popularity of Formula E. Nissan plans to build six LEAF NISMO RC vehicles to deploy around the world for fans to see.
All this sounds good, but what’s really missing here Nissan is a street version of the LEAF NISMO RC. Yes, yes, I know. Marketing plans, blah-blah-blah, corporate image, yadda-yadda-yadda – I don’t care: Sell me one. With license plates. Please?

Seven Female Drivers Set For Formula E Test In Saudi Arabia The 2018 Saudia Ad Diriyah E-Prix takes place on December 15th. 
The additional test session was encouraged by the local promoter. 
Saudi Arabia lifted a ban on women drivers last June.
Formula E is interesting. It’s a good way to advance electric vehicle tech and it keeps us entertained with lots of racing action. Sure, it’s still working out some of the technical kinks, but racing series are always in that position. And now, Formula E has gone and done something very interesting by having seven female racers competing in an open test session in one of the most unlikely of venues: Saudi Arabia.
According to Reuters, at least seven female drivers will take part in the Formula E test on December 16th, the day after the season-opening race on the streets of Ad Diriyah, near Riyadh.
A Different Culture
Saudi Arabia is about as progressive concerning women’s equality as rural Portugal in 1409. We would have said screw these guys ages ago if they weren’t sitting on top of an ocean of our oil, but they are. So we generally turn a blind eye to these fundamentalist creeps literally flogging you, by law, for spending time with the opposite sex, being gay, bringing liqueur chocolates into the country, and driving if you’re a woman.
Wait, scratch that last one. As of a little while ago, women can finally get a driver’s license in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Still, here we are; in a country dependent on the internal combustion engine for its wealth and power that looks at 51 percent of its population as little more than sentient property, now having an electric vehicle race with a whole bunch of women drivers.
The Real Deal
And no, in case you’re feeling contrarian, this is not just some kind of a stunt. And no, these are not some also-ran paid hacks sitting in the cockpit. So in there with the likes of Gary Paffett and Sebastien Buemi and Felipe Massa we see names like, oh, Dutch racer Beitske Visser, IndyCar racer and Formula Atlantic triple winner Katherine Legge and another Indy racer, Simona de Silvestro.
The women confirmed for the Saudi Arabia test include Colombian Tatiana Calderon, an official test driver for the Sauber Formula One team. She will be running for the DS Techeetah team. Visser will be with BMWi Andretti Motorsport, wtih Legge and Jamie Chadwick testing for the Mahindra and NIO teams respectively. Swiss racer de Silvestro will test for Venturi and Spaniard Carmen Jorda for the Nissan e.dams team.
I was in Long Beach when Legge won in Atlantics there. It was her first race ever in the series, and she won right out of the gate. I just happened to be in the paddock with her boss, garrulous Australian Kevin Kalkhoven, when she crossed the line. I thought the guy was going to die from the sheer joy of it all. It’s also worth noting that Legge handles adversity with a disarming level of cool.

Legge Walks Away
In 2006, the rear wing failed on her car going through the kink at Road America at an ungodly velocity. She slammed into the wall and reduced the car down to the bare tub in a fraction of a second, tumbling end over end. She came to rest upside down. When the safety crew righted the tub, she popped out, took off her helmet, shook out her hair, waved to the crowed, and beamed her huge smile.
Then my phone rang.
“Did you see that?”
It was my dad. “Did you see that,” he repeated.
“You watching the IndyCar race,” I asked, rhetorically.
“Yeah, but did you see that?”
“You mean Katherine Legge’s accident just now?”
“Yeah, that! My god, I’ve never seen anything like that! And that was a gal driving – a gal!” [My dad was a touch on the chauvinistic side.] “I thought he-er she was dead! I mean dead. I’ve never seen anything like that! And it was a gal!”

Fast & Furious
Speaking of fast, Simona de Silvestro. When she first raced Indy cars, she seemed to have two modes: Running up front or (literally) on fire. She’s fast, but used to have a tendency toward recklessness of the flaming variety. Seriously, the first three accidents I saw her in ended up with the car on fire. She’d just shrug and walk away, more pissed than anything.
Curiously, there’s also “locals” like Amna Al Qubaisi (from the UAE) running in this Saudi test session on the streets of Ad Diriyah (all FormE races are on street circuits). She was the first Arab woman to qualify for the Formula 4 Championship. “How did you get started in racing?” would be my first question to Mz. Amna Al Qubaisi.
Talk about playing on a tilted field.
New Times Ahead?
This racing business is stacked against women to a sickening extent, even though that is slowly changing. Chauvinistic doesn’t begin to describe it – shoot, women weren’t even allowed to set foot into Gasoline Alley at Indy until 1971! I, for one, am ready to see more women get involved in this sport at all levels. And if it gets a bunch of easily threated whiny little boys all upset, then too bad.
And if it has to start in places as unenlightened as Saudi Arabia, then I’m fine with that too.

2018 Porsche 911 Carrera T: The T Stands For Terrific

Whoa, whoa, whoa – hold up here chief! What’s this? Has Porsche somehow come to their senses? Out of nowhere, they’ve rolled out the 2018 Porsche 911 Carrera T and, without a sense of irony or deceit, say up front: “Less weight, more performance.” Praise Doktor Ferdinand! Blessed are his accelerations and his braking. Sanctified is his commitment to engineering and precision. Gearheads, we got a hot one!
More Than Words
The Weissach bunch say the 2018 911 Carrera T is “reinvigorating the concept of the puristic 911” and I, for one, am overjoyed about this direction because this is not just ad-speak from the Marketingabteilung. The 911 Carrera T (the “T” stands for Touring for some reason) has less weight, a manual transmission (huzzah!), and a shorter constant transaxle ratio. Wait, there’s more! A standard mechanical rear differential lock is also in the mix along with several hot rod, performance-boosting features that are not available on the standard (some might say lesser) 911 Carreras. You get the PASM Sport Suspension with the ride height dropped 0.39-inches (10 mm), a shortened gear lever for quicker throws, and optional rear-axle steering not available for the standard 911 Carrera.

Light & Tight
Based on the 370 horsepower 911 Carrera Coupe, the Carrera T is focused on being light and sporty. The rear windshield and rear side windows are made of lightweight glass, while door opener loops on the inside replace the conventional door openers, harkening back to the 911 RS of old. Sound insulation? There’s still some here and there, but it has been significantly reduced. All of this adds up to the 911 Carrera T tipping the scales at 3,142 lbs., the lightest model in the 911 Carrera range. Yes, that is no where near the (right around) 2,000 lbs. 1973 911 RS, but modern times mean modern truths, like impact standards and airbags and door beams. But so be it. Light means right, and if I have to explain that to you, then I can’t even . . .
Exterior Treatments
Porsche also wants the new 911 Carrera T to look the part. This is no stripped down sleeper. The 2018 Carrera T is fitted with an aerodynamically improved front spoiler lip; the SportDesign exterior mirrors are painted Agate Grey. The vehicle’s side profile features big, 20-inch Carrera S wheels painted Titanium Grey, and a rather groovy stripe with the model designation. Speaking of that Agate Grey color, Porsche has also seen fit to splash it on the rear decklid louvers, the Porsche logotype, and model designation “911 Carrera T” (that’s the script for all you old school types). The Sport Exhaust System, which is standard (duh), comes with black tips.
Your color options are Lava Orange, Black, Guards Red, Racing Yellow, White, and Miami Blue, along with the trad metallic colors: Carrera White, Jet Black, and GT Silver. Obviously you should go with GT Silver since this is a German car. I’d normally say White, but Porsche is a newer German car company, so the old racing colors do not apply in Porsche’s case.

Interior Appointments
The interior of the 911 Carrera T is fitted with black, 4-way electrically adjustable seats called “Sport Seats Plus,” complete with Sport-Tex centers. More the pity. All those motors and wiring add weight. I would love to see simple levers and such to adjust my seating position. The headrests are embroidered with a black “911” logo, which is a nice touch. And if you order the optional Full Bucket Seats, a first on a 911 Carrera, the rear seats are deleted. So order the Full Bucket Seats.
The standard GT Sport Steering wheel is trimmed in leather and fitted with a switch for driving mode selection. The gear lever is shortened and sports a red embossed shift pattern reserved for the 911 Carrera T. If you want to get all fancy, contrasting colors in Racing Yellow, Guards Red or GT Silver are new and can be had, along with additional accents for the seat belts, “911” logo on the headrests, door opener loops, and seat centers.

Power & Performance
Way, way out back sits a twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six engine, putting out 370 horsepower and 339 lb-ft. of torque. Nice! Combine that plant with the manual transmission, shorter constant transaxle ratio, and the mechanical rear diff lock, and you hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Top speed is 182 mph! If you want to, you can opt for the PDK semi-auto transmission, which will scoot you to 60 mph in 4 seconds using the standard launch control. The downside of the PDK (besides weight) is the top speed being “only” 180 mph.
You can order your 2018 911 Carrera T now, and it’s expected to reach U.S. dealers in March. Cost? Well (cough) the base MSRP is $102,100, which, you know, ain’t cheap. But who cares? Buy one! Buy one! Buy one! Then give us a ring at One Automoblog Towers in Detroit so we can, uh, “evaluate” your 2018 911 Carrera T for you.
