Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 Prototype: No Fuel? No Problem! Woo-hoo! Ford has, unexpectedly and delightfully, rolled out a new Mustang Cobra Jet drag car on us. And get this. Right out of the box, the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is putting down over 1,500 horsepower and can crank out low-eight second times in the quarter. But, believe it or not, that’s not the impressive part. No, this is the impressive part: The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is electric.



No Fuel? No Problem!



The raw numbers for this latest Cobra Jet, recorded during a recent round of private development testing, are simply head-shaking. A quarter-mile time of 8.27 seconds. The terminal velocity is 168 miles per hour. Peak power output for the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is 1,502 horsepower at the wheels.



Those would be awe-inspiring numbers for any drag car, let alone something that doesn’t burn a drop of fuel. 8.27 seconds, no matter how you get it, is a very fast drag time. But doing it on electrons?



“Since revealing the car, we’ve continued to fine-tune it and now know we’re just scratching the surface of what we may be able to achieve with this much electric horsepower in a drag racing setting,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “The opportunities to learn with the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, as well as the Mustang Mach-E 1400 we recently introduced, gives us great insight into what may be possible in high-performance all-electric vehicles for Ford going forward.”

Ford Performance developed the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype while also working on the Mustang Mach-E 1400 prototype; the Mustang-shaped SUV that’s also an EV. FoMoCo worked with Cascadia Motion on the Cobra Jet 1400’s powertrain. There are four PN-250-DZR inverters coupled to a pair of DS-250-115s handling four motors total, all spinning at up to 10,000 revolutions per minute. 



These motor-inverter packages – sort of the electric equivalent of an engine/transaxle combination – run at 800 volts and up to 700 amps, with a maximum output of 350kW per motor. No wonder this thing is pulling low -8s, huh?



Additional Partners



Ford Performance also teamed with AEM-EV to manage the propulsion package. They jointly developed an advanced data and control system with algorithms unique to the Cobra Jet 1400. And, as you’d expect, that steep amount of power has also required a different approach with chassis tuning. Ford’s build and integration collaborator, MLe, got tapped for that end of the project. The longtime Cobra Jet build collaborators over at Watson also helped with the project.



“It’s been a great but challenging project for all of us at Ford Performance,” Rushbrook added.



Will Tesla Respond?



The Cybertruck seems to want to take on the F-150, so why not have the Model S and a Mustang going head-to-head? The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype against something Tesla cooks up? So c’mon Elon, put your money where the ground is! Put up or shut up, but whatever you back off the trailer, remember these numbers: 1,502 horsepower, 168 miles per hour, and 8.27 seconds.

2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6 Review


“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” is a motto credited to an old Georgia farmer who was talking about the government. Toyota has a habit of fixing things that aren’t broken but it has worked well for them. The Toyota Camry midsize sedan has been America’s best-selling car it seems like forever, and it’s still the best-selling model, thanks to Toyota engineers who keep fixing it. Simply put, it keeps getting better with age.
It stands in a super-competitive segment with the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Hyundai Sonata. This week, we drove the 2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6.
What’s New For 2017
Toyota is taking a breather from fixing the Camry and the sedan has changed little for 2017. Even then, Toyota has tweaked the Camry’s top trim levels for more standard features, including an upgraded infotainment system and a wireless charging pad.
Features & Options
The 2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6 ($31,370) comes with 18-inch wheels, LED running lights, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather and simulated-suede upholstery, the aforementioned charging pad, an upgraded Entune system with 7-inch display, a smartphone app-based navigation system, and a 10-speaker premium audio system with satellite and HD radio. V6 models also get LED headlights, a sunroof, a noise-reducing windshield, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Camry XSE adds a universal garage-door opener, auto-dimming mirror, and dual exhaust outlets.
Our XSE tester came with the optional Blind Spot Monitor ($500), Navigation ($710), and the Technology package ($750) that added adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and mitigation, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. Total MSRP as tested including destination: $35,903.





Interior Highlights
The cabin of the 2017 Camry XSE hasn’t been changed much either since the 2015 remodel. The XSE has door sills that light up, comfortable, heated sport leather seats, and ultrasuede inserts with extra side bolstering. The interior features contemporary styling that’s simple yet with an elegant feel. There’s an abundance of contrasting stitching on the seats, doors, dash, center console, shifter boot, and steering wheel adding to the ambiance.
The climate control and premium audio with simple and easy to use controls is refreshing compared to some models. That’s not always the case in the cabins of some other automaker’s upper trim levels.
The 2017 Toyota Camry features one of the most comfortable and spacious cabins in the midsize sedan segment. The backseat offers plenty of room for taller adults and a rear-facing child seat can be installed. It will fit easily in the back. There’s also lots of storage and cubby holes up front to place things. Space in the trunk, at 15.4 cubic feet, is average for a midsize sedan.





Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs


Our Camry XSE tester came powered by the optional 3.5-liter V6 that produces 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft. of torque. The sedan features a front-wheel drive configuration and a six-speed automatic, with Eco/Sport modes and steering wheel paddle shifters. With the V6, the Camry XSE gets an EPA-estimated 21/30 city/highway and 24 combined mpg. The mpg rating puts it on par with the competition.
Driving Dynamics
As is our practice, we took the Toyota Camry XSE into the mountains, west of Denver, to see how the V6 handles the altitude and the elevation change. Between Denver, which is 5,280 ft. above sea level and Evergreen, which is 8,500 ft. above sea level, is where I live. The 3.5-liter V6 engine delivered above average acceleration for a family sedan. Transmission upshifts are responsive, which is noteworthy, given that some competitor’s automatic transmissions are lethargic for the sake of fuel economy.
We kept the 6-speed automatic in Eco for a relaxed driving experience but dropped it into Sport mode later on. We used the steering wheel shifters for extra engagement while passing trucks on I-70. The sport-tuned suspension is responsive to driver inputs and fairly composed when going around tight mountain curves. The XSE dials up driver engagement if you have an itch to push the Camry a bit harder. It’s not as sporty as other rivals like the Mazda 6, but it’s not a rolling couch potato either.
Toyota’s V6 will sprint from 0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds, making it one of the quickest cars in the class. Fuel mileage suffers if you use that available power, however. The XSE’s 225/45R18 tires do provide a bit more grip than the standard Camry’s smaller meats; an advantage that’s intangible to the average driver. The sport suspension, however, delivers pleasant ride quality. It’s deliberate in quick maneuvers, but the electric power steering conveys very little of that tactile information to the driver.
Conclusion
The seventh-generation of Toyota’s Camry is still a good value for sedan shoppers because of Toyota’s traditional strengths of build quality, reliability, and resale value at trade-in. Camry is number one for a reason and delivers with a competent, quiet, and comfortable ride. For the average family, the XSE will deliver a satisfying commute. For a local business, the new Camry would be a good company car. The XSE trim does dial up excitement for those seeking a ride that’s a little higher on the fun-to-drive meter than the other Camry trim levels.

Letter From The UK: Headed For The Rocks


Is The Great British Car Industry Heading For The Rocks?
A few weeks ago, the Conservative Government of the UK called a General Election in the belief they would gain a strong majority in the UK Parliament ahead of the Brexit negotiations. At the time this seemed very likely. The trouble is, they went on to run the most disastrous election campaign this country has ever seen. Overall, they are now in a much worse position to govern than before and that includes their dealings with the EU machine.
Now, with a much weaker hand to play, the British Prime Minister, Teresa May, has flown off to Brussels to give a speech to European Union leaders about one of the consequences of Britain leaving the EU. In this case, it is about EU citizens who live and work in the UK and their British counterparts who do the same in Europe.
All At Sea
It is a storm in a teacup. No reasonable government would kick out working citizens at a stroke but it does highlight something else. British agriculture has become use to a steady flow of migrant or itinerant workers from abroad who seasonally pick produce that can’t be garnered by automation.
The result of this is that the stream of such workers is starting to dry up because they don’t know where they stand. The thing is neither does anyone else. This has repercussions for our motor industry. With the possible exception (so I hear) of the current American administration, our leaders here don’t seem to have a clue what to do. Their solution so far is to keep bailing out the sinking ship of State in the hope that someone will bring along a bigger bucket.
A recent BBC News article reads: “David Cameron, his Chancellor George Osborne and many other senior figures who wanted to stay in the EU predicted an immediate economic crisis if the UK voted to leave. House prices would fall, there would be a recession with a big rise in unemployment – and an emergency Budget would be needed to bring in the large cuts in spending that would be needed.”
The Car Industry
The car sales industry in the UK and Europe is huge and Britain imports many cars from Europe and similarly exports out our brands. As the UK car industry is almost entirely foreign owned the worry is that the owners, come Brexit time in 2019, will jump ship fearing trade tariffs will make their UK production uneconomic. That would be a disaster for Great Britain. Further, UK car plants also depend heavily on the free movement of components to and from the continent.
The British Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders are on record as saying that any new relationship with the EU would need to address tariff and non-tariff barriers, plus regulatory and labor issues, all of which “will take time to negotiate.” In short, they don’t think a deal can be sorted out in the next two years and that some form of interim arrangement must be implemented. This could mean, for example, that the UK stay in the single market and customs union until a new, overarching relationship between the two sides is brokered.

Live In Hope Not Expectation
When asked, the SMMT’s chief executive said it was time to be pragmatic. He went on: “we accept that we are leaving the European Union and we share the desire for that departure to be a success. But our biggest fear is that, in two year’s time, we fall off a cliff edge – no deal outside the single market and customs union and trading on inferior World Trade Organization terms. This would undermine our competitiveness and our ability to attract the investment that is critical to future growth.”
In the typically aggressive manner the British have come to expect from EU negotiators over Brexit, their chief negotiator has said there can be no concessions. This is unhelpful. In general, the attitude of the big cheeses who run the European Union is like that of a child who can’t have its own way. They throw their toys out of the pram. This is not conducive to good business and the car makers, being intelligent and sentient beings and not politicians, know this. And they are worried.
The damage to the British car industry could be immense. There must be a solution and, because the car makers have to think long-term, there has to be one soon. Fortunately living in hope is a British trait. We don’t have any other choice.

2018 Dodge Durango: SRT Flavor With Every Bite

Earlier this year, at the Chicago Auto Show, Dodge revealed the 2018 Durango SRT, effectively saying their answer to the world’s problems is to throw more horsepower at the situation. Waxing poetics aside, the strategy seems effective enough with Dodge taking the crown for the most powerful three-row SUV on the market today.
Dodge recently revealed the 2018 Durango R/T which has similar characteristics as its older brother.
Striking DNA
The Durango SRT is easily noticeable by its aggressive, yet functional hood which features a center air inlet duct flanked by heat extractors. The front lower valence houses a new cold-air duct system and LED fog lamps – these things are done in the name of style and performance, and R/T buyers will have this exact same setup on their Durango.
Engine choices include the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 rated at 295 horsepower, the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 rated at 360 horsepower, and the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 rated at 475 horsepower. Regardless of which trim level buyers opt for in the Durango, Dodge is singing the hymns of power and performance. The automaker is keen to point out how buyers can get “SRT attitude” in every Durango powertrain.
“Performance is more than stats,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “At Dodge performance is an attitude that permeates through everything we do.”

Special Treatments
The Durango R/T is one of only two models available in a B5 Blue exterior color (late availability); Durango SRT being the other. Additional standard goodies for the R/T include Front Park Assist and a BeatsAudio system complete with a subwoofer and 506-watt amplifier. All 2018 Durango models come with a backup camera, a new sport steering wheel, and electronic T-shifter with an Auto Stick selector gate. Customers can also opt for the available hand wrapped instrument panel with accent stitching.
“We are strengthening the brand’s promise to deliver performance vehicles with world-class power, technology, and standout styling our customers have come to expect,” Kuniskis added.
Dealers are taking orders for the 2018 Durango with an anticipated arrival sometime in the third quarter. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicles arriving at dealers. For the current model year, Durango trim levels include the SXT, SXT Plus, GT, Citadel, and R/T.

2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid: New Appearance Package Proves Minivans Are Cool Who says minivans can’t be cool?! The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid will still haul the family, but it’s a bit edgier now with the new S Appearance Package. The addition gives the Pacifica Hybrid a shaded and blacked-out look, a design that is becoming quite popular today. The package is – and has been for awhile – available for the gas Pacifica.
“The factory custom look of the S Appearance model is really resonating with our Pacifica buyers, so much so that we are now making it available on the Pacifica Hybrid model,” explained Steve Beahm, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and Fiat, FCA – North America.
Styling Treatments
The styling deets have gloss black elements running the length of the exterior: grille surrounds, eyebrow accents on the headlamps, daylight opening moldings, roof rack, and rear valance moldings all see gloss black treatment.
The 18-inch wheels and the Pacifica’s badging come in a “Black Noise” finish.
The S Appearance Package fills the interior with a combination of black and “Light Diesel Gray” accents.

Storied Past
35 years ago, Chrysler changed the automotive landscape with the minivan. Both Lee Iacocca and Hal Sperlich, fresh off a rejection from Ford Motor Company for a minivan concept, landed at cross town rivals Chrysler. They were the architects of the Mustang, which proved wildly successful for Ford, but the Blue Oval was hesitant to combine the words “mini” and “van” together.
The Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager would later surface, arguably to the bewilderment of not only Ford, but other automakers as well. That first generation paved the way for the Pacifica Hybrid, which provides 566 miles of total range and more than 100 available safety and security features. The cassette tape players of the early minivans are now replaced by the Uconnect 4 system of the Pacifica, complete with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and 4G LTE connectivity.
In essence, Chrysler’s minivan has aged well, boasting 115 specific innovations in the segment.
“With 84 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in electric-only mode and 33 miles of all-electric range, this package makes the industry’s only hybrid minivan even more unique,” Beahm added.
Pricing & Availability
The S Appearance Package for the 2019 Pacifica Hybrid is available for $595.00, and can be ordered as soon as next month. Expect S Appearance-themed Pacifica Hybrids at FCA dealerships this fall.

2018 Toyota Land Cruiser Review If you live in a snowy climate, the Toyota Land Cruiser is highly capable, and is aimed at the family who needs guaranteed control on an icy road leading to a ski area, or safe traction on the dirt road leading to a mountain house, or headed into those mountains for a weekend biking or hiking trip.
Need to pull something for recreational use? The Land Cruiser can even tow boats or horse trailers up to 8,100 lbs.
What’s New For 2018
Following a substantial freshening for 2016, the Land Cruiser is little-changed for the 2018 model year. The rear-seat entertainment system, formerly standard, is now an option. Outside mirrors now fold inward as the vehicle is locked.
What hasn’t changed is the Land Cruiser’s ability to handle big loads, haul heavy cargo, and transport people and gear in comfort. It comes with a heavy-duty architecture for handling bigger jobs.
Features & Options
The 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser ($83,665) comes with four-wheel drive, eight-passenger seating, four-zone automatic climate control, semi-aniline perforated leather seat trim, heated/ventilated power front seats, a cooler box, push-button start, LED headlights, and 18-inch wheels. Infotainment features include a 14-speaker JBL audio system, a nine-inch touchscreen, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player and dual 11.6-inch screens.
Total MSRP including destination: $84,960.

Interior Highlights
At first glance, the Land Cruiser almost resembles a luxury sedan. There is abundant interior space and plenty of leg and headroom in both the first and second rows. Front seats are wide and well-padded, helping to provide excellent views and room for taller drivers. Row two isn’t far behind in comfort, with room for three average-size adults. The semi-aniline leather upholstery feels luxurious, and there is some hard plastic trim likely for ease of cleaning after a long camping or hunting trip.
At the center console, controls for the transfer case and four-wheel drive system sit alongside a conventional gearshift lever. Land Cruiser’s upright, symmetrical dashboard is packed with large buttons and knobs, yet most controls are accessed through the infotainment screen.
The third row is ideal for kids, with a truck-based configuration with two removable seat halves that can fold upward when not in use for more cargo carrying ability. Cargo volume totals 16.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 43 cubic feet when those seats are folded away. Removing the third-row seats and folding the second-row seats boosts space close to 82 cubic feet.





Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs
Toyota offers just one engine for the Land Cruiser: a long-proven, 5.7-liter V8 generating 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft. of torque, mated with an eight-speed automatic. Every Land Cruiser has full-time four-wheel drive, with a locking center differential and a two-speed transfer case that permits low-range operation.
EPA fuel mileage ratings come in at 13/18 city/highway and 15 combined mpg.
Driving Dynamics
Out on the road, the Toyota Land Cruiser is smooth, quiet, and comfortable for long trips. The high seating position gives the driver and passengers a commanding view of the road ahead. It left us with a feeling of superiority over the rest of the crowd on the highway. And the big 5.7-liter V8 with its massive torque rating helped with that superior feeling.
We were able to power by anyone who was going too slow by pushing the gas pedal to the floor. The big V8 responded well and took us anywhere we wanted to go quickly.
We didn’t have a snow storm this week, but the all-wheel drive SUV powered through the off-road course near Morrison, Colorado. The Land Cruiser’s four-wheel drive system has four modes, actuated by a toggle switch on the center console. It can be operated by locking the center differential in high or low-range. We encountered patches of ice on the road, and locking the center differential helped maintain grip as individual wheels encountered the slippery surfaces.
The Land Cruiser is a big vehicle and the only downside is parking and maneuvering it in the city, which can be challenging. But parking is made easier with its low-effort steering at slow speeds. Visibility was an issue as we headed over the crest of a hill in the mountains because the hood is tall. We lost sight of the road as we approached another car.
But on the open road, it works.
Conclusion
The 2018 Land Cruiser offers plenty of utility, exceptional capability off-road, towing power, and Toyota’s reputation for build quality. The big vehicle is relaxing to drive on long trips, gliding down the open highway with ease. For those who live in the country or a rural setting, the Land Cruiser will handle big loads, haul heavy cargo, and transport people and gear in comfort.

2019 BMW 8 Series: Sonny Corleone’s Car Two Decades Later Okay y’all, here we go again. BMW is having another run at making a big coupe. For reasons that are beyond me, the Bavarian company seems to have a hard time getting things just right in this arena. As a matter of fact, they haven’t even tried to take a crack at this for 20 years.
It was 20 years ago that BMW gave up on trying to make their last big coupe, coincidentally also an 8 Series, work financially. The last 8 Series coupe was a serious car. It wasn’t a sports car, it was too big and heavy to be considered that, but what it did have was still impressive: Lots of technology and a big, whopping V12 engine.
It was what a German Architect would drive: Stylish, exclusive, powerful, expensive. But for some reason, BMW could never seem to sell those things. The only people who likeed them were NBA players (they were incredibly roomy), but NBA players are a pretty small market, so BMW finally stopped.
Honest & Handsome
Fast forward to today, and BMW wants another try. Ever since the passing of the glorious 3.0 CS, 3.0 CSi, and the sublime 3.0 CSL, BMW has been wanting a coupe that says, “See! You best take us seriously buddy.” And with the all-new 2019 8 Series Coupe, they might just have an answer in the affirmative.
The 2019 BMW 8 Series Coupe will never be called a beautiful car; brutally handsome fits better. The production version looks a lot like the show car that debuted at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in 2017. BMW says the styling focuses on modernity and emotional engagement. I say it’s sort of the automotive equivalent of Sonny Corleone; more purposeful than beautiful, stronger, rather than graceful. It’s not a scalpel, it’s a cleaver, and a very sharp one at that.
The styling is all low-slung and elongated silhouettes, slim window pillars and “double-bubble” contouring, long wheelbase, and wide track.

Power & Performance
All this „Geh mir aus dem Weg, ich bin ein Ruck mit viel Geld“ style gets moving thanks to a new aluminum alloy, TwinPower Turbo V8 engine; a 4.4-liter mill with two twin-scroll turbochargers with charge air cooling located within the cylinder’s V. It’s managed by High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. The engine’s note is described as “enthralling” (for what that’s worth) and the entire package is further regulated by a Driving Experience Control switch that can tweak stuff like accelerator response, comfort versus performance, power delivery, and acoustics.
Bottom line for the new V8 engine: 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. of torque.
Driveline Magic
After the engine comes an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with wider ratios and quicker gear shifts. Weight has been reduced, gear shifts are sharper, rotational forces are reduced, and the whole deal is controlled via a bunch of computers between your fingertips on the shift paddles and the transmission.
And yes, the 2019 BMW 8 Series will be all-wheel drive. Currently, no other option exists. BMW says the xDrive system has been improved and comes with an electronically-controlled differential lock. Thankfully, BMW says all of the drive torque is directed to the rear wheels in situations when all-wheel drive is not needed. The system’s rear-biased setup promises a driving experience above and beyond the luxuries this car carries.
BMW says to achieve rapid combustion, the intake ports have been optimized for higher flow on the new 8 Series. The enlarged twin-scroll turbochargers and the variable valve and camshaft timing enable throttle losses during the gas-exchange cycle to be eliminated as far as possible, allowing for better exhaust gas recirculation and lower fuel consumption. Suspension & Braking
The suspension for the new 8 is a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear design. An electro-mechanical steering box points the front end, which is held up by torsion struts, while the rear axle rides on independent rubber bearings to increase camber stiffness and enhance the suspension’s baseline setup.
Also standard is an Adaptive M suspension with electronically-controlled dampers; both compression and rebound are adjusted continuously and independently. Yes, like the engine and trans, the suspension is also controlled and adjusted via the Driving Experience Control switch.
Braking? C’mon man, this is a BMW, it’s got brakes that could stop a train. The 8 Series Coupe is whoa’ed up with four-piston, fixed-caliper brakes at the front and single-piston, floating-caliper brakes at the rear. There’s an electronic parking brake (boo!) and the DSC stability control is fully integrated into the braking system.
Manufacturing & Availability
All this adds up to the new 2019 BMW M850i xDrive doing zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, topping out at a limited 155 mph (boo!). Pricing will be released closer to the on sale date this coming fall. The new coupe will be built at the BMW Dingolfing plant in Germany, home to 7 Series sedan production.

Even More (Yellow) Individual Flair: 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S Edition 1 At least Mercedes doesn’t call it a four-door sports car, but even so, calling it a four-door coupe is almost bad enough. Coupes have two doors. Sedans have four doors. The Mercedes AMG GT 4-Door has, unsurprisingly, four doors.
It’s a sedan. But a very good sedan.
First Edition
Fundamentally, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has the basic underpinnings of the “normal” AMG GT Coupe. And since the AMG GT Coupe is pretty much a beast, then it’s not much of a stretch to see how the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe should also be as well.
And just to make you feel all special about not just purchasing an AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, but buying one of the first ones to show up, Merc has upped the ante (slightly) with a unique Edition 1 model with a bunch of exclusive interior and exterior bits for 2019.
Basically, early adopters get an AMG Aerodynamics Package, special wheels and paint, AMG Performance seats and steering wheel, and Matte Carbon-Fiber trim.

Aerodynamic Art
About that trick areo package. The AMG Aerodynamics Package for the Edition 1 comes with a larger front splitter and integrated aero flics in the front bumper. The diffuser has been “optimized” and the rear spoiler’s angle can be mechanically adjusted. The rear spoiler and larger front splitter, combined with the AIRPANEL active air management system, gets you a noticeable amount of additional downforce, mushing you to the Straße.
And as your cherry on top, the AMG Aerodynamics Package also contributes to lower drag, despite the higher downforce. Schlaue Jungs.

Styling Treatments
Other bits and bobs on the outside further distinguish the AMG GT 63 S Edition 1. The paintwork is designo Graphite Grey Magno with matte Graphite Grey stripes on the sides, hood, roof, and decklid. (Hey, go-fast stripes! those should add another 1 mph to your top end, minimum buddy.) There are 21-inch cross-spoke forged wheels, painted matte black with a high-sheen finish, so, you know, you look cool.
Interior Fashions (And Scents)
The interior features such refinements as Multicontour Performance Seats with a Memory Package, Nappa Leather Upholstery in Magma Grey/Black with flashy yellow contrast stitching, a performance steering wheel in DINAMICA microfiber with more yellow stitching, a racy yellow 12 o’clock marking, and an even flashier “Edition 1” badge.
There’s lots of Matte Carbon-Fiber trim, the seatbelts are yellow, and the door center panels are Magma Grey. The instrument panel and door beltline get black Nappa leather with that same yellow top stitching. The door sill panels are illuminated and say “AMG.” There are edition-specific floor mats in black with a leather band and “AMG” lettering and, well this is a surprise, yellow top stitching.
Last but not least, every man, woman, and child on planet Earth will be overcome with joy when they realize the AIR-BALANCE Package comes with a new, dedicated “AMG #63” fragrance. Take your seats, take your seats!!





Power & Performance
The Edition 1 comes with the top-of-the-range, handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 bi-turbo engine, cranking out 630 horsepower and 664 lb-ft. of torque. Result? A top speed of 195 mph with a zero to 60 time of 3.1 seconds.
So like I said, it’s a sedan, but a very good sedan.
Availability
The AMG GT 63 and 63 S will arrive in the United States early next year, with the AMG GT 53 coming in mid-2019.

2018 Ford F-150: Bad Ideas, Big Bets And Beer Can Jokes

Ford Motor Company has, in recent times, put a strong emphasis on material composition. When I was selling Ford trucks seven, eight years ago, the high-strength steel frames were always a focal point. As sales consultants, we would often explain the frame’s benefits, touching on things like towing capability, payload capacity, and overall durability. At the time, Ford was not modest about their steel frame technology (they aren’t today either), so talking about it was a good way to win a customer over on an F-150.
In late 2014, I was part of a group that traveled the country to educate Ford dealers on the forthcoming 2015 F-150. The training was absolutely essential for Ford’s dealership body. The 2015 F-150 was a bold move for the blue oval yet again, as they announced an even smaller EcoBoost in the 2.7 after unveiling the 3.5 version in 2011. It wasn’t just the engine, however. The entire body of the truck was now something called “military-grade aluminum.”
This brought up a whirlwind of reservations, concerns, and even jokes.
Sound Science
Yet Ford is no dummy and the reasoning behind their decisions regarding the F-150 are very sound. Look, Ford ain’t going to bet the farm on their best-selling vehicle. So if Ford decides to drop a smaller, turbocharged plant into their trucks, or go with an aluminum intensive body, there is every reason to believe the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed.
Not that I want to spark a huge debate here over naturally aspirated engines versus turbocharged ones – both have advantages – but the EcoBoost is a torque monster. And not that I want to strike up a similar parley on aluminum versus steel – again, both have advantages – but aluminum allowed the F-150 to shed vital pounds, thereby creating a more optimum power-to-weight ratio, which only amplifies the already roid rage nature of the EcoBoost engines.
The point is, Ford is becoming a master of less weight, lower displacement, but higher capacity. They effectively say, “we have the stability and rigidity of steel underneath in the frame, the lightweight, yet durable nature of aluminum on the outside, and a more efficient, more powerful plant under the hood.” Ford is in combination mode at all times, pulling out the benefits of various materials and engine technologies to provide, in the F-150, a single invincible (nearly) vehicle.

Family Tree
The F-150’s older brother, the Super Duty, reflects this too. The forthcoming 2018 Expedition, the latest in the family to receive an aluminum body and a steel frame makeover, also reflects it. Not exactly a direct comparison, but remember when the 5.0 Mustang debuted in 2011 and dusted stock Camaros and Challengers on a quarter mile? Smallest displacement engine of the three, so on paper it may not have initially computed, until the Mustang’s weight entered the equation.
Ford is working this concept deeper into their DNA, and it’s seen once again with their flagship F-150. The truck for 2018 continues its usage of a high-strength steel frame and military-grade aluminum body, but with more efficient, more powerful engines. The first is the 3.3-liter V6 for the entry level F-150s. The plant adds dual port and direct injection to create more torque and provide better fuel economy. With the aluminum body factored in, the standard 3.3-liter V6 offers a 5 percent power-to-weight ratio improvement versus the steel-bodied 2014 F-150 with the 3.7-liter V6.
The 2.7 EcoBoost, entering its second-generation, jumps from 375 lb-ft. of torque to 400 lb-ft., with the increase happening at lower engine speeds. The 2.7 is now paired to a segment-exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission to increase performance and efficiency. Next spring, a 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 diesel arrives for the F-150, a mill designed, engineered, and tested in-house by the blue oval. With Ram’s EcoDiesel, the Titan’s Cummins, and the Colorado’s Duramax (with rumors Silverado will get similar treatment), it was only a matter of time before Ford introduced something like this.

V6 King, V8 Kingdom
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost remains unchanged in power from 2017 to 2018, standing tall at 370 horsepower and 470 lb-ft. of torque. Horsepower nutzos can go for the Raptor, where the high-output 3.5 EcoBoost wraps up 450 ponies and 510 lb-ft. of torque in a nice little package. Yes, a V6 boasting these numbers in a truck was, at one time, a little odd, and goodness knows those early days of moving EcoBoost F-150s took some salesmanship.
A hardcore truck buyer at the time was often resistant to the idea that a V6 could do the job (and a better one) of their V8. I was lucky my underwear didn’t end up flying high on one of the light poles over the lot, as if it were some dealership rendition of the Nickelodeon series, Salute Your Shorts.
“Hey look, that’s Carl’s underwear up there over the used minivans!”
Today, however, Ford’s customers are not out of sorts with the array of V6 engines, and Ford sales consultants need not be in fear for their drawers. If anything, customers have readily embraced Ford as the V6 king: 75 percent of new Ford trucks this year have rolled off the showfloor with V6 engines.
And Ford still offers an impressive 5.0-liter plant. Significant upgrades were made for 2018 to the dual port and direct injection systems to increase performance. The 2018 F-150 engine received the same spray-on bore liner treatment as the Mustang GT350 in an effort to remove additional weight from the aluminum block. Expect this engine to be paired with the aforementioned 10-speed automatic for 2018.

Terrible Ideas, Remarkable Outcomes
It’s important to note the 3.5 EcoBoost was hanging around Ford’s camp for a moment before being dropped into the F-150 in 2011. The Taurus SHO and Flex had it, as did the Lincoln MKS and MKT. It wasn’t until it hit the F-150 that Ford became bonkers. And aluminum, alas aluminum. It’s fine for airplanes, high-speed rail trains, skyscrapers, electrical wires, supercars, and the iPhone, but in a truck it’s just plain stupid? No foreseeable benefits whatsoever, just a beer can on wheels. Notice how aluminum, just like V6 engines in a truck, didn’t become a terrible, half-baked idea until Ford started landing segment-leading figures in towing, payload, and fuel economy with their stupidity.
